and that breaking news, dozens of san francisco state university students forced out in the middle of the night when a high-rise caught fire near the campus. good morning, everyone. it's 4:0. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. the fire started around 1:30 at a high rice on camwon drive near 19th avenue. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live. >> reporter: the people who live in the high-rise woke up and saw flames shooting out of a six-floor unit. there were two people injured in this fire. let's look at some of the video

from overnight here on kambon drive. the fire burned in a that one ?[á. before they even arrived here they were getting reports of oxygen tanks exploding in the building. they called in extra units to help here at the park merced and of course there was the immediate concern of the safety of all the residents in such a large building. this is a 12-story building so many people were evacuated or sheltered in place while firefighters focused on the one unit. two people were injured here, at least one of them needed some oxygen. >> it's a high-rise building, requires evacuation, that's one of the big efforts we have to do, evacuate the personnel because of the smoke. precautionary measures we took to evacuate the building. >> reporter: the extent of their injuries is unclear at this point. many of the residents just grabbed what they could on the way out, their clothes, their pets, cats, dogs. smoke and water damage, we're told, to a couple of other units

on that floor, also maybe a little bit of water damage on the fifth floor. exactly what caused this, well that's under investigation, but we're told that most of the residents are back in their units at this hour. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a lot of little pets saved. thanks, christie. turning to the microclimate forecast a live look at the peninsula of palo alto where you can see some fog this morning, further to the south in san jose, looks a little bit clearer but it could be the city lights. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott and laura, everybody at home. we want to point out right off the bat there is no wind out there, which is good news when it comes to that situation with the fire. we're tracking some showers just to the north of the bay area. these will stay in the ukiah clear lake region this morning and the front will dip to the south throughout the day and more shower activity getting into the all-important weekend so stick around. in fact, look at your seven-day

bridges and livermore and altamont pass you're fine on 508. back to you. >> thanks so much. 4:3030. the case against the man accused of kidnapping and killing 5-year-old sierra lamar moves forward today. garcia-torres was indicted tuesday by a santa clara county grand jury. lamar was last seen in march of 2012 after she left her home in morgan hill. she never made it to school and her poddy was never found. garcia-torres was also cited for violent attacks on women in 2009. four people were shot in fruit veil last night at 37th avenue and international boulevard. the conditions of the three other people who were shot have not been released. oakland police have not told us

the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether anyone was taken into custody or the identity of that dead person. flowers outside a popular down town nightclub, in memorial of a well-known bouncer stabbed to death yesterday morning. more than 100 people attended the vigil for ryan vieri. he was not on the clock at johnny v's nightclub yesterday morning. man carrying a case of knives had just been asked to leave the bar, and vieri was leaving at about the same time. vieri was found stabbed on the corner of first and santa clara. one person taken into custody. police say this is the third stabbing in the week. the victim's friend says something needs to be done. >> the city needs to redirect spending to helping people because it's good people like this that are going to have to get hurt for them to have to wake up and realize that something's not right. >> san jose city council just

approved overtime pay for five additional officers to patrol downtown. tonight the san mateo city council is meeting to discuss its search for a new city manager. susan loftus recently retired taking with her an additional $300,000 in unused sick time and vacation pay on top of her already $200,000 a year salary. there's nothing illegal or unethical about this. it was a deal she made when she took the post. the objection is she was the only one allowed unlimited acruel and cash-out. no doubt it will be a hot topic at to the's meeting. the competition heating up in sochi. live look at the olympic flame burning bright in olympic park. the weather is heating up as well. it's a balmy 61 degrees in so much yeo right rue. people walking around in shorts and t-shirts, even taking dips in the black sea just to cool off. conditions ideal for spectators

turned atlanta into an icy ghosttown and highways into the carolinas into parking lots. it is now headed north. washington, d.c., is in the thick of it. the federal government is closed this morning as that storm moves in and the icy mess means a bigger mess at airports across the country including right here in the bay area. "today in the bay"'s" bob redel is live this morning. >> reporter: a passenger just walked by, gave us a thumbs up and she's excited because her flight was cleared to atlanta which wouldn't have been the case yesterday. the snowstorm on the eastern seaboard is moving north, relieving atlanta hartsfield but causing major problems for airports in the northeast. according to flightaware.com, more than 4,000 flights have already been canceled for today nationwide. i just got off the phone with a duty manager here at sfo. he tells us there are almost 50 arrivals and departures that have already been canceled for

today at sfo, flights traveling between raleigh and sfo, all the way up to boston and you compare that number to yesterday. yesterday there were 50 cancellations here at sfo, so the almost 50 that we're seeing today could increase because here we are, we're still only around 4:30 in the morning, because of the massive winter storm that started in the southeast, dumping snow, sleet in atlanta, as i mentioned, six inches of snow in charlotte, north carolina, which is very unusual for that part of the country, and of course, it's now going to be affecting flights especially in the philly, boston, washington, d.c., new york area. washington, d.c., by the way, right now, has mandated 50-minute delays at the minimum and as you alluded to the federal government is shut down. what's happening in the northeast and the eastern seaboard is definitely affecting traveling for peaks on the west

over the place, in the 40s out in san martin, 50 in half moon bay, san francisco is at 51 and i want to show you the golden gate bridge because in addition to the rippled out delays that we're expecting from the eastern seaboard, we are also going to see our own delays here out of sfo because of the fog. the fog is thicker than it was at this time yesterday so give yourself plenty of time, travel cautiously. the reward comes in at the end of the day, that's 70s in the south bay. 71 degrees out in the tri valley. 62 in san francisco and a good looking weekend shaping up, valentine's day tomorrow and a couple things i need to point out, next week overall looking wet, we need the rain, bring it on. i'll talk all about that coming up. right now let's check your drive with mike inouye. >> here's some of the glow because of the moisture in the air christine is talking about. fog and low clouds for our traffic cameras above the deck for the drivers and just getting by right now. as it sinks or moves around we'll watch the visibility for

well, good morning to you. this is rockefeller center in new york city. they're having a devil of a time with another winter storm hitting the east coast. we have full coverage including a lot of delays out of sfo this morning. a follow-up, officials canceled the amber alert issued after witnesses told police they saw a man force his way into a car and kidnap a teenager and elderly man. roy mccain stole several items at a safeway in oakland and used

a knife to carjack and kidnap two people. police tracked him down and found he knew the people in the car and there was no kidnapping. they also determined the person witnesses thought was a teen ainger was actually over 18. he is known to hang around safeway and has a history of shoplifting. another recall from are toyota this morning. the car company is recalling almost 300,000 vehicles because of a skid control software glitch. the recall affects the rav4 suv, tacoma pickup and lexus rx 350 built from march 2012 through december of this year. toyota says the problem can cause stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control to turn off even though standard braking will keep working. no accidents or injuries have been reported. toyota recalled nearly 2 million priuses for a different software glitch this week. just in, comcast will soon

take over time warner cable. this deal is worth about $45 billion in stock, just confirmed by both ceos of both companies moments ago. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, it's bertha coombs live at cnbc. before we start, bertha, both you and i are employees of nbc universal which is in turn owned by comcast. >> exactly. comcast is the parent of cnbc, also kntv as well, and the company this morning announcing it has struck a deal to buy time stock as scott mentioned. the deal would create the nation's largest cable provider. comcast is $22 million, time warner $11 million. they have more than 33 subscribers, you can do the math there. it is a deal expected to face tough regulatory review from the fcc but brian roberts on cbs,

the ceo of comcast saying they are willing to give up 3 million subscribers to get to the 30 million mark. 30% of the national cable market is about what has been the limit over the years although there are no as longer any formal limits that would keep them from having more than that. time warner cable recently rejected a takeover offer from rivals charter communications, the biggest markets, new york and los angeles. futures are pointing to a lower start. the dow looks like it will open down about 50 points, after a mixed day on wednesday. dow snapping its four-day winning streak after a disappointing earnings forecast from procter & gamble weighed on the index. the nasdaq did manage to extend gains. investors will watch for the key economic reports today, the number one being in about 45 minutes we'll get the weekly jobless unemployment benefit claims and we'll also be watching for retail sales to see just how this horrible weather that's impacted so much of the

country may be having on the economy. the dow opens at 15063 after falling 30 points. the nasdaq closed at 4201 after gaining 10. if you're think being what to do for your valentine's friday, the sky is the limit. mastercard is teaming up with uber to give away free on demand sky writing for two dozen people. new york, dallas and san diego can order messages such as "i love you" or "be mine." mastercard foots the bill which is about 10k. you can enter through a special contest on twitter. there's a limit of 12 letters because it takes about two minutes for a plane to create each letter and they only last for about 30 minutes or so. i don't know if you could actually enter in the bay area and then have it written for me, for example, in new york.

>> we could try. is that a hint? >> just an idea there, not that anyone is dishing or hinting but it's free. >> we do love you. >> you look up, that one will be for you, we promise. >> and bertha, we were going to send you some chocolate but if that's what you'd rather have. okay, let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we've got a good looking day shaping up. we've got that fog out there. it's more widespread low cloud cover that will impact you this morning. traveling through the east bay hills and up and down the coastal mountains where it is the thickest, travel cautiously. at the immediate surface, here our valley cam in san rafael shows you things are looking good, traffic moving along nicely. we'll get the official word from mike momentarily. as we head throughout the day today temperature also climb out of the 50s into the 70s in some cities so we're running five to ten degrees above average temperature wise.

70 for the south bay, 65 in the north bay. san francisco with a fair amount of cloud cover all day long, you'll stay nice and cool today, only about 61 degrees. taking a look ahead, yes, valentine's day is tomorrow. hopefully i'm not breaking news to you at this point. we've got a great looking valentine's day for all the lovers across the bay area. you do want to keep in mind, though, up in the north bay we're going to have soupy conditions, so you might have a little bit of steady drizzle, a little bit of rainfall as we head throughout tomorrow morning, worth eyes looking good to finish off the day at 68 degrees for the south bay and 61 north bay, full moon highly visible at night. as we get into the rest of the week and the weekend, showers become more promising. here's what we're expecting. the clock getting into friday and saturday, most of the activity to sonoma county and stop the clock at 6:00 p.m. and you can see starting to get some rich moisture up in the north bay. we need the rain, so we say yes,

bring it on. all of that rides into the south bay by about 3:00 a.m. on sunday morning but the good news is the rain is going to come through while you're sleeping so you can make the outdoor plans and seb-dseb seven-day forecast four out of seven days rain on the way. we'll talk about what that means to tahoe in a little bit. back to you, scott and laura. surveillance cameras rolling as a massive sink hole opens up at the national corvette museum in kentucky, swallowing up several of the classic cars, a total of eight ended up in the sink hole, six owned by the museum, two on loan from general motors, the museum sent a drone down in there to take a look at the gaping hole, the cameras, they kind of look like hot wheels i suppose. the fire department estimates the hole 45 feet across, 25 feet deep. still ahead on "today in the bay," her parents sold their cattle to pay for training.

now to a true cinderella story from sochi, usa underdogí kaitlyn farrington won the half pipe. her parents had to sell off their cattle to pay for her training. she was the last of four american to qualify for the final. her near perfect run surprised her family and fairington admits it surprised her. >> it's amazing, i didn't think i would have beat them and so it was amazing to be on top with those two girls because they're both amazing riders and i look up to them so it's great. >> australia's tora brine finished second followed by american favorite kelly clark. mike inouye, good morning. >> good morning. we'll shred it over on the freeway, i have no idea what that means. we'll ride 101 northbound through san jose, a clear view for the road.
