well, the u.s. men and women's curling teams takes on sweden and canada in sochi this weekend. now, curling is becoming one of the most talked-about sports in the winter olympics and it's often compared to shuffleboard on ice. before you dive into the action you might want an explainer on the physics that makes this game possible and for that dr. phil kesten who teaches physics at santa clara university joins us to talk about it. thank you for being here. how does it work exactly? i understand it has to do with friction and the ice melting. break it down for us. >> anytime anything slides forward, the front end tends to dip down a little bit. so, it pushes down, the curling stone pushes down a little more on the front than the back on
7:53 am
the ice. that causes the ice to melt just a little bit. so, it actually reduces the frection friction on the leading side of the stone and when it's spinning the least amount of friction is on the side toward which it's turning which is the inverse of what you would expect if there weren't melting ice underneath it. >> if you took a glass and turned it upside down and spun it, it would go the other way because the front side is controlling the friction. >> you put together this video with some of your santa clara students to give them a window into what is happening with the sport. what sort of reaction do they have to all of this? >> well, you know, it's incredible how excited students get about science and sports. i mean, i think it's a great way to connect students with science. of course, when you think about it, curling is just a lot of fun to watch, so we don't always go out there just thinking about the physics. >> it is. we see the drag effect illustrations up on here.
7:54 am
how does that work when you have the curling stones that are already out there and you strike a stationary stone, what happens there? >> if you have ever played pool, billiards, when one objection hits another the second one tends to go off in the same direction it got hit, but when the curling stones are touching, the curlers call it being frozen, the first stone can pull the second stone along with it and that allows you to adjust where you want that second stone to go. >> there's definitely an art at play here. let me ask you one question that many people wonder about, what are they doing with those brooms? what kind of an impact does it have on the flight if you will? >> the sweepers. >> the sweeps. >> they'll tell you that they're cleaning dirt off the ice, but really what's happening is they are warming the ice up just a little bit, same deal as with the stone. puts a very thin layer of water down in front of the stone, reduces the friction. a stone can actually go 10 to 20
7:55 am
feet farther based on the sweeping. the other thing that i think is really cool is the stone curls, curves much more when it goes slower. so, if you keep it going fast, it goes straight. if you let it slow down, it curls a lot. >> so you can really moderate the pace of the stone itself based on those brooming actions. >> i think curling may be the only sport in which participants can change the motion of something once it's been released. >> this is definitively a sport, right? because you are talking about the physics of it which is fascinating, but some people, you know, how much -- how much expenditure of energy are people really doing to actually get this done? >> well, i'll tell you what, we went out to the rink, to put that video together. curling is a lot harder than it looks. >> okay. so, you're saying that's deceiving. >> oh, yeah. >> you would know first hand, of course, dr. kesten from santa clara university, thank you so much for joining us. a fascinating topic. now we'll see how the u.s. fares
7:56 am
this weekend, of course, you see the basics, the fundamentals as laid out by dr. kesten. we'll be back with more olympic information next.

nothing epitomizes the olympic games more than overcoming adversity, never giving up and making the impossible, possible, but sometimes you just have to admit when you've been defeated. one of the sochi wint eer olymp mascots learned that first hand. the polar bear's head is a little bit too big to fit in the passenger's side door of the olympic vehicle. being the champion he is, the bear tried over and over again to wedge it in there but sometimes you can't fit a square peg into a round hole. it's still efforting. the mascot may have suffered embarrassment, but we look at it there's always the 2018 games to look forward to to get another shot there.
