is in the forecast. i'll tell you when that comes into the picture in moments. >> and a live look outside right now. it is monday, february 17th as we get things going at 5:00, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker. laura garcia-cannon is off today. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. police are looking at surveillance video this morning hoping that they will be able to find the person who shot a man outside a san francisco mall. the shooting happened last night near the intersection of market and powell. christie smith is live in san francisco with the latest on the investigation. christie. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. that's right, san francisco police tell us that they are looking at surveillance tape from the many stores up and down market street trying to find the shooter who ran off into the crowd. someone opened fire last night

outside of the west field shopping center. this is a really busy corner filled with shoppers and tourists, the victim here stumbled down an escalator there at the powell street b.a.r.t. station entrance after san francisco police say he was shot at least twice. they describe him only as a young man. this is a busy time of day around 7:15 last night, the powell street cable car turn around across the street. witnesses tell us they wondered if there would be more gun fire as chaos erupted. the muni and b.a.r.t. trains bypassed the station and it was shut down for a time. witnesses describe to us those first moments. >> it was just real quick, bang, bang, then everyone kind of scattered, started running like the direction i was going people were going run, going in the stores. >> reporter: right after the shooting the police cordoned off market street and picked up what

appeared to be clothes outside of a storefront. the victim was critically wounded. police asking for witnesses to come forward but they are telling us that they don't believe that this was a random shooting, they believe that the victim was most likely targeted. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. >> palo alto police are searching for a man wearing a pretty strange disguise who tried to rob a gas station at gunpoint. this happened on san antonio road near middlefield road and 101 on saturday night a. man wearing a long curly wig walked up, pulled out a gun and demanded cash. the cashier refused to hand over money, that's when the suspect ran off. >> another march and protest today in santa rosa over the death of 13-year-old andy lopez. deputy shot the teen because he thought lopez was carrying a real automatic weapon back in november, turned out to be a

replica. at 1:30 today protesters will gather in santa rosa calling on the sonoma county d.a.'s office to indict the officer. the group is also asking the santa rosa police department to release its own report on the shooting. now of course to the sochi games where it's not the sport or the athletes making headline this is morning. >> this time it's the weather. janelle wang live at olympic park with more about what's causing these cancellations. good morning. >> reporter: good afternoon, scott and peggy. as you can see, cloudy conditions, we actually had rain overnight. behind me fisht stadium where the closing ceremony will be in less than a week on sunday. up in the mountain the problem isn't snow, it's thick fog. low to zero visibility up on the mountain has forced olympic organizers to cancel the

biathlon and also men's snowboard cross. both postponed until tomorrow. yesterday the women went first in snowboard cross. six start at the top of the mountain and it's a race, chaotic race to the bottom. athletes describe it as a demolition derby. the czech republic won gold. let's move to the bobsled. the two-man not canceled. the finals going on. three american teams are in it is. corey butner's team in 11th and nick cunningham is in 13th place. the americans are trying to end a 62-year run without a medal in the two-man bobsled. moving to the slopes, a great night for the americans in the men's alpine super g, bode miller took bronze at 36 years old miller becomes the oldest olympian to win a medal in alpine history. he is also the most decorated

with six medals, it was an emotional moment as miller thought of his younger brother who died of a seizure last year at the age twof 9. >> my brother passing away i wanted to come back and race the way -- this was a little different. >> you're showing so much emotion. >> reporter: an emotional win. the giant slalom and slalom. a busy day here. i'm showing you a different vantage. coming up i'm going to give you a little bit of a tour around this park, also i finally had a day off and went for russian food. i'm going to tell you and show you what i had that's super popular here coming up in 15 minutes. back to you. >> looking forward to that. glad to hear that janelle got a minute to herself.

>> that controversial interview that janelle was talking about happened right after the race. you see bode miller wiping away tears thinking obviously of his brother who died in april. it was christin cooper who asked him about his brother. you saw miller break down and walk away with tears in his eyes. a few moments later his wife morgan makes it down the side of the mountain. cooper received criticism for the interview. miller tweeted out i appreciate everyone sticking up for me but please be gentle with christin cooper, it was crazy emotional and not all her fault. >> nice thing to say. you can catch all of the excitement here on nbc bay area, starting this afternoon at 3:00 with the women's biathlon. >> then at 8:00 we have finals in ice dancing, men's freestyle aerial skiing and men's ski jumping. >> the sport of curling has been around for 500 years believe it or not. a lot of people don't know much about the event. >> bob redell is live at sharks

ice to see if he has what it takes. >> i can tell you right now i don't. you don't need to see me out slipping and sliding. here we're with the bay area curling club, kind enough to be up bright and early showing off some of their skills. you have been curling over 50 years. i know you're watching what's going on. men's and women's team. disappointment? >> disappointment would be probably the right way to put it. both of our teams are much better than they are showing so you know, we'd like their expos sure if they are winning but both of these teams are our best and they are playing their hearts out. that's all we can ask. >> neither in medal contention. brings up the question, these are all competitors that don't do this for a living, they have day jobs. do you think that usa curling will try to push to make it professional? >> i don't know how far they

thought that process through but it wouldn't surprise me. if the push to get medals is that big of a deal, yeah, wouldn't surprise me next year or so they come up with another plan or hand pick a couple of teams and send them out on the tour to get better training and more exposure. if medals is the name of the game. >> because curling has been in the olympics for a time now are familiar with the sport but it still gets a lot of flack for being you know, an odd sport. some wonder if it is a sport. how do you respond to that? >> when i first moved to the state 20 some years ago -- >> from canada. >> from canada. i was happy to get any exposure at all. it used to be a bit of a joke. i would say now it's more of a novelty or amusement to the general public. but just about everyone has heard about it, they have seen it. it's taking a while but the credibility is coming up and believe it or not, the athletes

curling at the olympics at that level, they work out, they are in good shape and it's a lot more difficult than it looks. >> we might prove that point later in the morning. thank you very much. by the way, you guys are interested in curling they do have a website bay area curling.com. for the sf area. reporting live at sharks ice, bob redell. >> i saw on facebook they are giving free lessons. >> i would need one. i fully believe it when they say it's harder than it looks. wouldn't you agree? >> yeah. where does the curling part come in? is it when you curl your arm back? >> when they spin the rock. we know a curling expert. >> if you need a curling iron expert you got one, scott mcgrew. 40 degrees in oakland, 44 in mountain view and 42 in san jose. and yeah, no, it's definitely not as easy as it looks. one of our directors does that in her spare time. she wrote a book about it.

it's complicated. very interesting to find out the physics of curling. san jose is mostly clear, we have low clouds overhead. they are not going to last long and they are patchy. it's not one solid cloud deck. 57 degrees at lunch time with a mix of sun and clouds. 61 at 4:00 p.m. so a cool day, you need your jacket but not bad at all. right on par with seasonal averages. 59 in san francisco, 65 the high for the east bay and the south bade will hit a high around 2:00 p.m. of 63, now we do have rain in the forecast for this week. if you don't want to wait for my report it's there scrolling at the bottom of your screen. what i can tell you is this is what we expect. clear morning, patchy low clouds, throughout tonight that will turn into thick a.m. fog tomorrow morning so we are concerned when everybody heads back to work tomorrow about thick fog. we'll be tracking that. our next weathermaker arrives as we head into wednesday. everybody looking to accumulate

into mountain view. steven uncover as new theory involving one of the largest contamination sites in the bay area. we're talking about the epa's super fund site in and around moffett field. tests show that the contamination spread beyond the boundaries of the site. now there is concern that the underground drains and sewage lines transported toxic chemicals from the site to other parts of the city. scientists are finding new hot spots that seem to follow the utilities. >> it's not proof beyond a reasonable doubt but the best explanation of the data, the best we have right now is that these more zon toll conduits or sewer lines are the source. >> tonight after the olympics the investigative unit digs deeper for the first time pieces together data to find out where the tce might be coming from and we'll talkthe epa about efforts

to clean up the mess. >> a new acquisition from google this morning. the tech giant has acquired slicklogin, it's an israeli start-up, allows to verify a user identity. it works by playing a unique silent sound through computer speakers, that's picked up by an app on your smart phone. it can be used as replacement for a pass word or as an added layer of security. so far no financial details have been released. >> next year's international film festival could be on a lush hawaiian island with the bay area connection. a new website show what is oracle's ceo has done with the island of lanai which he bought two years ago for $500 million. the site touts luxury shopping and restaurants and says the island will host the international film and food festivals in 2015. the site claims the island will be the backdrop for a television

series called lanai beyond the grid. >> groupon may now how to save you but don't ask them to help you with history. groupon has a deal for presidents day. $10 off. $40 when you buy at a local business. organizers say nounsed the deal with a press release. there was a glaring error. it says the $10 bill features president alexander hamilton, one of our greatest presidents and widely recognized for establishing the country's financial system. well, it's a great deal, the problem is well, hamilton wasn't president, he was the first secretary of the treasury, chief of staff to george washington, groupon has not commented on the gaffe. i'm sure he would have made a fine president. >> an important man. never president. checking in with meteorologist christina loren, a look at the temps for this presidents' day.

>> heading out for the sales, maybe a picnic in the park. 40 degrees in the east bay, san francisco at 48 degrees, a little fog, not a lot out there. kind of drifting around and patchy. all across the bay area, remember your seven-day forecast is here at the bottom of your screen throughout all of my weather reports. temperatures today are going to end up in the mid-60s. these are seasonal averages about how it should feel right now for this time of year in san francisco. 59 degrees is about as mild as it gets. so it's going to be a mild and sunny presidents' day. looking comfortable the next few days temperatures are going to stay steady. we'll climb a touch tomorrow, bring the numbers down for wednesday, a little rain activity as well on wednesday, mostly to the north of the golden gate bridge. thursday into friday temperatures will start to warm up. look at that, 69 degrees in san jose on friday so. comfortable friday. then more rain moves in as we

get into the upcoming weekend. we want the rain chances at this point as you know we really need that rain. so let's get in you're futurecast. when we expect our next weathermaker. we stop the clock at midnight on wednesday. that's when showers move into the north bay. they are going to spread to the south. wednesday, 5:00 a.m., a little shower activity when we meet back in san jose. not expecting a lot. we'll take what we can get. like i said, tracking more rain on the way for the weekend. i'll tell you what this means for tahoe as a lot of our little ones are going to head up for ski week. there is snow on the way. we'll talk about how much coming up. back to you, scott and peggy. >> thank you. in fact, a popular tahoe resort taking on the u.s. forest service. the heavenly mountain resort reportedly protesting a plan to restrict future ski resort develop. under the 15-year land management plan, all four ski resorts in the tahoe basin will have to keep development to 200 acres collectively.

resort officials sent a letter to the forest service chief saying the plan could spark a development race. as they all try to use up the 200. the u.s. men's hockey team getting much needed day off as they get ready for the elimination round. >> very exciting game because they finished at the top of their group, the u.s. earn add bye in the elimination round, that means they go straight into the quarterfinals. that match-up will either be with the czech republic or slovakia. they play tomorrow. the way the brackets stacked out the u.s. is on a collision course with canada. if both make it out of the quarterfinals they meet at the semifinals with the winner going to the gold medal game. despite a few days off americans are still talking about t.j. oshie. >> with what looked like nerves ever steal oshie won america's shootout against russia on saturday, scoring on four of the six shootout attempts.

since then his popularity skyrocketed. before the win he had 91,000 followers on wait toer. this morning he has more than a quarter million. it scored an interview on the "today" show. >> i have a feeling i was going to go again. i didn't know i was going to keep going. really happy that the last one went in. >> so that's u.s. goaltender jonathan quick with oshie. you can see the interview on the "today" show starting at 7:00. >> oshie is from a small town in minnesota called warroad. how about that. south of the canadian border. the population 1800 but many are olympians. since 1956 the town has eight including oshie. interestingly, g.d. marfin for the women is also from warroad. after oshie's game this started floating around on the internet. that is marvin and oshie together at the frosty festival where the two were elected king

so close. we just ran into each other. she got here a couple days ago. hi, holly. we called her mom and woke her up. you got to watch nbc bay area. >> hi, mom. >> reporter: you've seen a bunch of events. >> i have. i went up, let's see, the first night saw the skeleton where the americans we won a bronze medal. that was awesome. then yesterday morning the super g, of course bode miller and you know, so that's been great. then last night saw the speed skating where norway you know, they dominated. they totally swept, first, second and third and broke an olympic record. that was pretty cool. got through in curling. all been good. >> what else do you have planned. you have other things you want to see. >> definitely. i'm interested in seeing the nordic combined because that includes the ski jumping which i just can't imagine doing so i want to see it. and then of course cross country skiing. it's going to be cool. we've got what else.

ice hockey obviously, and bobsleigh. i know i'm forgetting some other things too. oh, short track speed skating. >> you're going to see it all. you're staying there was a cruise ship where the two main towns here and you're staying on one of the ships. they had to bring them in. there were not enough hotels. you're right on the black sea. >> yes. in adler and all been good, it's really nice, it has you know, nice accommodations, larger than the train that we were on to get here from moscow. but just you know, all a good experience and great to see and meet people from different countries. that's part of the thing that i like about the olympics is you get to see and meet people from everywhere. >> they have all you can eext. >> all you can eat. >> get me on that cruise ship please. she's actually already met -- the big thing is trading pins. we talked about trading these.

following in another vehicle near fresno. investigators say the family was driving home in two separate cars from a birthday party when a car going 60 miles per hour ran a stop sign and hit the suv carrying the mother and her children. >> the vehicle immediately burst into flames somehow which is kind of unique. the parties were unable to get out of the vehicle. it appears that the driver attempted to get out but didn't make it. >> the father was badly burned trying to rescue his family. the children range in age from 2 to 11. police say the woman who ran the stop sign is still in the hospital with ser just injuries. >> police are looking for a person who opened fire at a shopping mall last night near market and powell in front of the westfield mall. christie smyth is live in san francisco, police hoping that video will help. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. there are so many stores up and down market street so that's what they are looking at. as you can imagine, this

completely scared everyone who was out here shopping and walking around market street last night. a man shot and critically wounded outside of the westfield mall. he stumbled about 50 feet down the street after he was shot, fell down an escalator basically into the powell street b.a.r.t. station. police are checking the surveillance tape as the shooter ran away on foot into the crowd of tourists and shoppers, thousands of people out here on a sunday night. very busy corner, the powell street cable car turnaround is across the street. muni and b.a.r.t. trains actually bypass the station as it was shut down for a time during the investigation. witnesses tell us that they heard two quick shots, then people started to run down the street into stores, anything to get away. >> the first thing you're thinking is there going to be more, where is the person that had the gun. it's kind of chaotic.

once i heard the cops coming i felt a lot better. >> reporter: after the shooting police cordoned off market street and picked up what appeared to be clothes from outside of a storefront. the victim taken to sf general hospital where we are told he underwent surgery last night. police still asking for witnesses, though, to come forward. but they don't think this was a random shooting. they do think the victim was targeted and say it's very fortunate that no one else was hurt. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> san jose police are looking for a plan they say shot two people in a crowded shopping center, it happen affidavit 1:30 in the afternoon yesterday. surveillance video shows the victims, a man and woman, trying to get away after they were shot. police say it was a drive-by shooting but some of the people we talked to said they saw the shooter standing in the plaza. doctors think both of the victims will live, police are

still looking for the shooter. they say he drove away in a tan four-door sedan. >> new this morning a copilot hijacked a plane and flew to switzerland in attempt to seek asylum. the boeing 767 carrying 200 passengers took off from the ethiopian capital overnight. investigators say the copilot locked himself in the cockpit after the pilot went to the bathroom. he landed the plane in geneva. he turned himself over to authorities. the man wanted asylum in switzerland because he felt he was threatened in his home country. now he faces a slew of charges including one that will carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years. now to sochi. the 2014 games continue. but take a look at this. this is the mountain cluster there in sochi where most of the outdoor events are held. you can see the fog there shrouded over the mountains in the distance. that fog is so dense thaes

through events have been called off. the men's snow board cross finals are tomorrow because of visibility issues. the men's biathlon was carried over postponed again. it's now scheduled to take place tomorrow. >> the women's hockey team on the ice right now in their semifinal matchup with sweden. the game is airing on the nbc sports network and right now the u.s. is on top, 3-0 in the second period. before the game nbc sports tweeted throughout photo of the women getting ready. that's shot from inside the goalie net. seem usa clear favorite but players say they are taking things one game at a time. >> we're concentrating on us and focused on us. obviously people have watched our practices, we've been going hard and we knew that coming into this we weren't going to glide through this.

over the stone with the sweeping motion. when you sweep you are trying to melt the ice to give it speed but at the olympic level good sweepers make it move how much? >> about ten feet. carry a rock about an extra 10 feet. >> they get it in the house like we're watching this stone, hoping the stone -- is gotting to make it? harder. harder. >> once they get it in the house they can steer it? >> well, you can't really steer it so much but by how you regulate the sweeping is -- you allow the rock to bite into the surface of the ice. the ice has a fine pebble on it so it's like if you looked at it slide ways it's a little bumpy. the bottom of the rock will bite into and it's called puble so. as it slows down it will start to bite more and curl more so you can vary a rock behind one of your opponent's stones.

when you sweep is critical, sweeping holds the rock straight, then if you just back off at the right time that rock will take a curl and end up behind one of the other stones. >> jay, you mind if i step in? we'll show you guys how this is really done. yes. absolutely. that was a miserable failure. now you can see again why i did not make the usa curling team. almost right there in the center. by the way, this club you might be surprised to know has been here in the bay area for around 50 years, got about 150 members right now. they see this happen after the olympics, you get a surge of membership. you can go to bayareacurling.com if you want more information. show you how it's done, i don't think that needs to be swept does it. leave it alone.

cover that will be visible over the next hour. you'll need your jacket about all day long, though, in oak town today. this is what we expect. mild and sunny, a light breeze, great news because that means old glory will get a little pickup. end up in the mid-60s in santa rosa. east bay at 61, danville 64 and 65 degrees down in pleasanton. so looking nice out there for today. right on par with our averages. we still need rain and it is on the way. we're not going to see a lot of it until we get into tuesday. on shore flow nonetheless is going to be rather strong. that means we'll see steady drizzle. clouds really increasing tomorrow morning, we expect thick fog and heavy low clouds. then wednesday at 1:30 a.m., starting to get shower activity that will press into the south bay. wednesday morning could maybe see .1 inch, .25 at best.

beautiful. this is -- hi. this is the iceberg. in about 90 minutes from now the ice dancing will continue. americans are in first place now, so fingers crossed. then on wednesday the ladies skate including our own 15-year-old polina edmunds from san jose. a few hours ago i spoke with bay area native and gold medalist kristi yamaguchi on her thought& on the american women and their competition. >> we have returning olympic champion una kim from south korea and she is looking as great as ever. and then mal assad achlt i feel she looks amazing here f. she can land that triple axel that could give her the edge. but of course yulia lipnitskaya. >> now 15-year-old who is like a gold medal favorite for sunshinia, she is amazing. >> she is. 15 years old and the emotion and

the composure she brings is incredible. beyond her years for sure. she'll definitely have the hometown crowd behind her. i think that kind of puts her in gold medal contention. it's going to be tough. whoever makes the least mistakes. >> we have a 15-year-old phenom too, polina edmunds. does she have a shot? >> i think she does. i'm throwing polina in the mix. sfle is from san jose and she's going to wow the audience as well i think. i think for sure she has a chance at top five and you never know what happens at the olympics. strange things can happen so podium, far fetched but not impossible. >> reporter: well, ashley wagner one of the three american ladies instagrammed this picture of her, polina and gracie gold all competing on wednesday. today was the draw to determine which order they will skate starting wednesday. we do not know yet.

>> the men's snowboard cross, the men's biathlon pushed back until tomorrow. there is too much fog on the slopes. >> it really is a holiday treat. fresh powder in time for presidents' day. the sierra got a fresh coat of snow. take a look at this from kirkwood. they reported nine inches of snow over the weekend. other resorts like heavenly and squaw reported three inches of snow. great conditions for skiers and snowboarders. chains are not needed for 50 or i-90 over the summit. >> you have the day off it's presidents' day, it's ski week, you are packing up the car right this second. let's check in with christina loren. how is the drive going to be? >> you do want to bring the chains just in case because there is more snow in the forecast as we head through tuesday into wednesday. the drive looks pretty good. might be a little breezy once you get in the higher elevations but looking good. you should be okay all the way to truckee. san francisco right now mostly

clear conditions, you notice from our live pictures here, a nice clear start to the day. it's not that cold and not a lot of cloud cover to point out this morning. 40s to start, 60s to finish. 63 in the south bay. 63 for the north bay. 65 in the east bay. the only place we don't break out of the 50s is san francisco. a steady drizzle by this evening. onshore flow picks up. nice clear morning, patchy clouds later on. thick fog tomorrow. a lot of people will be returning to work tomorrow. hopefully it's abbreviated work week for you. fog returns tuesday, pretty thick, then throughout the middle of the week by about wednesday morning talking showers returning to the forecast. we still need the rain and then we get another chance into this weekend. so right now chances aren't looking that great. areas to the south of the golden gate bridge. i think we'll pick up a tenth of an inch where we accumulated a tenth of an inch over the weekend so. we're going to keep those

good morning to you. 5:53 on monday, presidents' day. we take you out for a live look at the bay bridge. a little bit of traffic as you can see across the span, those beautiful lights there all lit up. >> speculation this morning swirling after a report that apple executives have been meeting with tesla ceo elon musk. a source reporting seeing apple executives at the tesla plant in fremont and the "san francisco chronicle" reports musk met with apple officials in cupertino last spring right around the time that analysts suggested that apple buy tesla.

neither company is commenting, plenty of others are, some experts think apple might be trying to expand outside of the iphone but others believe the company's talking about teaming up possibly adding apple's operating system to tesla cars or just plane invest in tesla's future battery factory. musk talked about plans to build a factory for ion batteries to cars. analyst told a newspaper tesla is considering building that factory in new mexico. >> hollywood turned out in full force for last night's british academy film awards. the top prize of the best film to "12 years a slave." mcqueen says he is looking forward to the oscars. gravity, the leading actor to chiwetel ejiof ork r.
