"today in the bay's" peggy bunker joins us in the studio with an update including bay area reaction. >> good morning. you know, downtown kiev literally glowing orange this morning. deadly protests in kiev's

independent square, growing more dangerous as the stalemate continues between the government and activists hoping to be more independent. overnight, you can see fires on every corner in independence square. the death toll stands at 25 though the situation and flighting very fluid. the main protester camp in kiev set on fire overnight, setting the city aglow. nine police officers have been killed in the fighting. police are taking background from protesters fighting with guns and clubs in street protests in downtown kievkiev. >> it's horrific, at this point, it's about human dignity and it's about making sure that ukrainians can live in a peaceful, lawful society. >> we told you about the death toll right now.

but the injuries are numbering in the hundreds, some say 250 seriously wounded are in the hospital. we're looking at the worst violence in ukraine since it declared independence in 1991. despite 11th hour meeting between the president yanukovych and opposition leader, no compromised reach. the situation dire and changing by the minute. the opposition continues to call upon the government to transfer power away from themselves and align themselves with the european union. when that didn't happen tuesday, the latest wave of violence erupted. we'll be watching the latest developments as they develop. >> live pictures as well. 5:02. fbi needs your help identifying a man agents are calling the valentine's day bandit. officials say the man robbed a bank of the west in burlingame valentine's day and chase bank

on millbrae january 10th. a black man, slim build and sunken cheeks. also has possible acne scars on his face and skin discoloration on the back of his neck. he's armed and dangerous. that never say die patent battle between apple and samsung looks like it's headed back to court. apple ceo tim cook ordered by a federal judge to meet with the ceo of samsung today. cook met on valentine's day with the chief of samsung's mobile division but walked away without agreement. with no deal, the case scheduled to go back to court next month. apple accusing samsung of patent infringement. we are learning new details about a flight that took off from the bay area and experienced severe turbulence over japan. several passengers were injured in the air. turbulence was so strong on this flight, it actually felt like riding on a roller coaster, some were lifted up out of their seat. this morning, nine people are recovering who left from sfo after being injured on that flight. i wanted to show you twitter pictures of the damage after the cathay pacific flight landed in hong kong. the economy cabin a mess. looks like someone picked up the plane like a toy and shook it. two flight attendants and several passengers injured, most discharged already. but, boy, what a flight. boeing 747 hit turbulence over japan. airspace over the pacific ocean prone with disturbances over winter and can't be detected in advance. one passenger described the wild ride this way, saying some passengers on aisle seats were thrown up and hit the overhead lockers. the overhead locker was broken, and the passenger in front of me was hit by falling luggage from the overhead locker.

civil aviation department in hong kong is investigating along with the airlines. live at sfo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> had to be a frightening flight for them. thank you. it is polina day, all eyes on the iceberg skating palace and san jose's own polina edmunds making her olympic debut in women's figure skating. >> i'm so excited for her. live for "today in the bay's" janelle wang. she's only 15 but polina says she's ready. >> reporter: she's a very confident, young lady, that's for sure. good afternoon. figure skating begins in about two hours from now. polina edmunds has been here in sochi for two weeks now, but she did leave during opening ceremony, went to austria for a bit to get extra skating time on the ice at a training center there. all ladies for team usa are back and ready to compete happening tonight at iceberg skating pal lance 7:00 p.m., two hours from

now. her teammates include ashley wagner and gracie gold. polina's the youngest, age 15, sophomore at archbishop plans to skate the same programs she did in u.s. championships in boston last month which land her a silver medal and spot on the team. polina is a virtual unknown to judges and some say she should have waited for the next winter games but the confident disagrees. she's been training for this moment her entire, young life. >> i don't want to be four years older and not as good as i was four years back. and have been held back for that. i'm happy they gave me my shot. i can't wait to prove myself at olympic games. >> reporter: 30 ladies take the ice today. here's team usa. polina edmunds skate 12th, gracie gold will skate 22nd and ashley wagner, 27th. now biggest competition, champion yuna kim of south korea

7:45 local time, that will be her olympic debut on the ice in sochi for the women's short program. michelle is a coach here. hey, good morning. >> good morning. >> i look at the pictures of polina here, started when she was 2. she's 15 now. past 13 years, she's been here. when did you start to notice her during your time here? you've been here longer. >> i've noticed her in the last two, three years. there's a poster from junior nationals and when that poster goes up, you realize you have something special in the building. >> reporter: when you look at her and compare her to other kids her age what makes her different? >> i think it's her presence. i think once they start winning, they start -- start to open up and you start to see a different presence on the ice. the way she skates, she starts to command a presence on the ice, which is amazing. >> reporter: when you look at her at the international level, against the other skaters, she's going up against, how do you compare her to them? >> i think she has such a chance

to get to the podium. i've been watching other skaters as well. i know russia has their 15-year-old, we like to compare our 15-year-old. i think she's just beyond her years. to me she doesn't look like a 15-year-old on the ice, she looks like a young figure skater. >> reporter: the other 15-year-old is debuting but the fact she's not known in ice skating, is that a negative? >> not at all. there were skaters, tara lipinski, sarah hughes, they make a mark that changes the world, changes the olympic dream. they come in and they make a difference. i think that the olympics can bring out anything for anybody, which is amazing. >> thank you. viewing party taking place in the floor above me at stanley's 7:00. polina dances in town. her dance academy, they'll be doing something, a similar --

now back to the olympics and golden moment for a new olympic sport. the free ski halfpipe. >> reno's over david wise wowed the world in high flying style last night, clinching the gold med until dramatic fashion. today he still is celebrating with our own janelle wang. exciting. >> reporter: yes. when i saw him i couldn't wait to give him a big hug, a familiar face, we're so happy for him. my producer and i have been following david wise for months now at the olympic trials last month and then with him right

after he clinched an olympic spot on the team. i just got to interview him one-on-one after he just one a gold medal. guess who's here with me? we've been following him for weeks now. now an olympic gold medalist in the halfpipe. has it sunk in for you? >> finally sinking in, yeah. a crazy whirl win, unyou win a gold medal it's nonstop action. crazy but good. >> reporter: the conditions were crazy last night. >> yeah. it's a winter sport, sometimes winter conditions strike. unfortunately it takes the team down a bit to have the fresh snow in there, makes it a lot slower and all of the cool, new tricks i wanted to do went out the window. but being able to make adjustments and ski well is, you know, part of being able to compete well. i think -- i'm honestly stoked how everybody rode last night.

in spite of the fact conditions weren't great, everybody said this is the olympics, we're going to put on a show regardless. >> reporter: you're about to run and yusou're social networking, instagram, tweet. lucky charm, can we see that? did you find that here in sochi? >> she found it for me. this is kind of my tradition, that every time i go somewhere i pick up a rock and -- a heart-shaped rock and bring it home to her to remind her that i've been thinking about her while i've been gone. but this time she brought me this from reno. it's in my pocket all night competing last night, my little lucky charm. >> reporter: father of 2-year-old nyyelle. with you at the bottom of the run but watching from home. did she see your winning run? >> yeah. we got a video that's posted on facebook of her getting super excited while i was competing and running up to the tv and giving me a kiss, so cute.

crews are calling it suspicious. no injuries reported. 5:31. new details in the scary fight that took off from the bay area on its way to hong kong. experienced extreme turbulence, sending several passengers to the hospital. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at sfo with new video of the plane after it landed safely. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. if you've flown, you probably experienced some kind of turbulence. but passengers say this was completely different. it was prong and went on for it two long minutes, but in some cases passengers were being hit by luggage from the overhead compartment inside of the plane. this morning, nine people recovering after cathay pacific flight from sfo on right to hong kong finally landed after experiencing severe turbulence over japan. 321 passengers, 21 crew were on board, 8 people taken to the hospital, most already discharged. but some people were taken out

while she lay in a hospital bed. 93-year-old mary perez went to san francisco general with breathing problems last friday. she was resting in a room, staff members were wheeling the man to the psych ward. he jumped off his gurney, ran into a room and beat her. >> grabbed the i.v. pole and swung the pole to her head twice, she covered her head with her arm. >> perez is in intensive care. hospital released a statement apologizing for the incident and promising an investigation. hospital officials say doctors see 4,000 patients on psych holds every year and evaluated in the e.r. another california slaughterhouse shut down, due to unsanitary conditions, and this one may have supplied meat to your children's school lunch. federal inspectors have order the central valley meat company to close as a precaution in ha

inford. the slaughterhouse has a history of problems. in september, the company recalled 5800 pounds of beef after the usda said they might contain small pieces of plastic. this was not the first time. the same facility was also closed in 2012 after an animal rights group submitted videos to the usda that showed workers using electric cattle produs on cattle. schools are aware of the problem, and there's no evidence anything dangerous made its way to cafeterias. 5:37. u.s. women back on the track going for gold in two-man bobsled. after first day of runs, usa, one, team of humphries and meyers in first place after two bronze. usa2 in third place, jamie greubel and aja evans. u.s. women say they're ready for today's runs.

is a young lady here a minute ago, tracy is a coach. good morning. >> good morning. >> you've been here for forever. you've seen her over the years. >> yes. >> the same question i had of one of your colleagues, when did you notice this is a lady that could go to the olympics? >> from the time she was really young. she just got a superior work ethic. just driven. >> there's a lot of kids probably like that. what do you think separates her from the rest of the pack? how much of it is luck? how much biology? how much you're saying? >> i think it's everything, but she definitely has a work ethic that nobody else works as hard as this girl. she works really hard and brings it every day. i've watched her over the years and every day it's 110% from polina. >> reporter: do you have a sense of how well she might do in the olympics? >> i'm hoping for top five for her, yeah. i think she can do it.

investigators say the fire's suspicious because the building was vacant. firefighters managed to escape safely. more details from the scene as soon as we get them. new video this morning of a deep sinkhole moments after a woman and her dog were pulled out last night in portland, oregon. the sinkhole opened up in the woman's backyard. she was looking for her dog when she fell into the 20-foot deep hole. the dog was in there, too. a man walking near the home heard her cries for help and called rescuers. pulled the woman and the dog to safety, both are okay. she recently had a sewer line repair done in her backyard. >> that is frightening. a gallon of milk could cost more than a gallon of gas. >> price of the cup of coffee going up as well. 6 i'm afraid your morning cu

of coffee will cost more. coffee prices surged to their high left efrl in more than a year, to 1.55 per found. you'll see that at the local store. price of milk going up as well. farmers cut back on the number of cows they had last year when the cost of feed went up. that's causing trouble now because there aren't enough cows to make the milk. as a result, gallon of milk could increase by 60 cents to as much as$6 a gallon. could go higher if the drought continues. so much games where it's do or die for u.s. men's hockey team including joe pawelski of the sharks. they'll take to the ice in sochi against the czech republic.
