deadly clashes erupt between police and protesters in kiev as black smoke swirls and political unrest gets out of control in the ukrainian capital. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. take a look at live pictures at central kiev, ukraine right now. you can see the smoke and the flag. thousands of protesters standing in defiance of the strong police presence. the protesters are angry at the government that it took a bailout from russia instead of dealing with the european union. for the very latest on the developing story, let's go to peggy bunker, joining us in studio this morning. >> it's a developing situation. as we looks at picture, every time we check back and see what's going on there, it's a different situation. it was aglow in orange from fire and fighting earlier this morning. it's a war zone. the situation in kiev watched internationally as a terrible wave of violence erupted yesterday and overnight in the

ukrainian capital. this, after ukrainian government turned its back on an alliance with the european union. death toll climbed to 26, with 250 injuries. nine police officers killed in fighting. police are taking background from protesters fighting with guns, molotov cocktails, anything they can get their hands on in street battles that are erupting in flames. at center of the conflict, president yanukovych elected in 2010 democratically, but is widely viewed as corrupt. now he's accused of aligning ukraine with russia accepting $15 billion bailout from putin. an ukrainian-american from scotts valley. >> it's about human dignity and it's about making sure that ukrainians can live in a peaceful, lawful society. >> the fact that everybody's

watching this situation, even hollywood weighing in on this conflict. take a look at youtube video posted by george clooney. >> you cannot have a democracy when you arrest and harm peaceful protesters. >> ukrainian protesters occupying kiev for three months but when yanukovych turned his back on the eu tuesday, that's when violence exploded. this is a changing situation. we're monitoring it closely. we'll bring you the latest details coming up after this. >> thank you. 6:02. new details about severe turbulence that sent people flying out of their seats midair. the cathay pacific flight left san francisco international airport headed for hong kong, but the plane started shaking violently over northern japan. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at sfo. several people were rushed to the hospital. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. they had ambulances waiting on the other side. we did hear from one passenger who said he never experienced

anything like it, that it was like a roller coaster, that he was lifted up in his seat, this wasn't like usual turbulence. it went on for two long minutes, probably the scariest two minutes of his life. this is on a cathay pacific flight, and probably equally frightening for the 321 passengers and crew on that flight from sfo to hong kong on right there. it did finally land safely after that severe turbulence over japan. paramedics and ambulance met the plane at the gates. two flight attendants and seven passengers injured, all but one treated and released now. take a look at aftermath from inside of the plane. twitter pictures were sent out, just a mess inside. looked like someone picked up the 747 like a toy and shook it around. one passenger described the scene like this, saying some passengers on the aisle seats were thrown up and hit the head on the overhead lockers.

the overhead locker was broken and the passenger sitting in front of me was hit by luggage falling from the overhead locker. the airline cathay pacific says it is investigating and so are the aviation authorities in hong kong. i bet you there is a huge sigh of relief when the plane did land safely. christie smith, "today in the bay." happening now, fire crews in fremont picking through a burned out building trying to figure out what caused the house to go up in flames. a live look at home on mission boulevard near the sullivan underpass. home caught fire around 4:30. you can see the crews have knocked down the fire. but when they arrive, the whole building was covered in flames they had to call for backup. the home is vacant, crews are considering the fire suspicious. so far, no injuries reported. time to check the microclimate forecast. we give you live look outside, san jose, palo alto, san mateo bridge. we've got it all covered.

week. cloudy start, areas of drizzle. throughout the morning, kind of dreary, overcast. but by noon, lunchtime looking great in the city by the bay. little bit breezy. wind will pick up. this area of low pressure clears out of here. through tonight, storm track to our north. that means evening clouds will return onshore flow stays firmly in place for the next couple of days. 5:52 sunset. days are getting longer, as a result, temperatures getting warmer. this storm track comes back into the bay area. talking about heavy rainfall at the end of next week. i'm going to time it out for you, show what we're working with. mike inouye, good morning. >> good morning. looking over to the folks getting to work. this is the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights on. metering lights working as well. slowdown for all lanes. backing up filling in the toll plaza but you see good movement in all lanes including cash lanes at bottom of the screen. that indicates lighter flow of

traffic. we're looking toward the maps. a smooth flow down east shore freeway. maze slowing down. north 880 slowing off the 880 overcrossing through down ton. early slowing for that. smooth flow through the tri-valley, developing slowdowns for livermore, out of the altamont pass and look at bottom of the screen, southbound 680 early slowing but holding steady coming in towards sunol, might be because of rain and slicker conditions in that area. it continues for the build. here in the south bay, an issue as well. passed by one of the shots, fremont, a fire you've been talking about. wanted to mention 238, mission boulevard, traffic control, the sullivan overcrossing, the dip down underneath the railroad tracks through niles area, because of a fire that's going on, suspicious fire, that we can see the tracks. back towards the map. an issue for fremont. south bay north bound 101 the issue. only real slowdown you see is here for the 680 and tully road towards 880.

early slowing and smooths out. 87 slowing into down up to. drive along the peninsula, getting over there via the done barten and san mateo bridges fine. end with the shot of 101, headlights more company but no slowing, no problem for the bay shore or 280 along that stretch. back to you guys. now to the 2014 winter olympics. this morning, olympic flame burning in the heart of the olympic plaza which is buzzing right now as women's figure skating competition begins. >> yes. three american women will compete to earn a spot on the olympic podium. one of them is polina edmunds, right here in the bay area. she's from midi. "today in the bay's" janelle wang joins us in sochi. a big day ahead for the 15-year-old. >> reporter: i know, it's finally here. ladies' figure skating the crown jewel event of the winter games

some many people watch the event and all eyes on polina edmunds. she arrived here two weeks ago but took off almost neated immediately to austria to get more practice time on the ice. back in sochi and ready to compete. ladies' figure skating, take the ice at 7:00 tonight, that's an hour from now. the americans, teammates, include ashley wagner and gracie gold. polina edmunds is the youngest, age 15. sophomore in san jose plans to skate the sam program she did at u.s. schchampionships in boston which landed her i silver meddle and spot on the olympic team. at her young age, polina is a virtual unknown to judges and some say she should have waited for the next winter games to compete but the confident teen strongly disagrees. she's been training for this moment her entire life. >> i don't want to be four years older and not as good as i was four years back and have been

held back for that. i'm really happy they gave me my shot, and i can't wait to prove myself at olympic games. >> reporter: 30 ladies take the ice today. here's team usa. polina edmunds will skate 12th, current u.s. national champion, gracie gold skate 22nd. and ashley wagner will skate 27th. biggest competition is reigning olympic gold medal champion yuna kim. queen kim yuna and mao asada. russia has yulil alilipnitskaia. she ran into joe pawelski. both competing today here in sochi. it's wednesday, joe pawelski takes ice against the czech republic for team usa at 9:00. polina takes the ice an hour from now at the iceberg. janelle wang, "today in the

at 6:13, a look at today's top stories. right now, police in the ukrainian capital of kiev taking back ground from thousands of angry protesters. the death toll has climbed to

26, including 9 police officers. another 250 people were hurt. the protesters are rebelling against ukrainian president who wants the country to reunite with russia. nine people recovering after a flight from sfo to hong kong experiencing severe turbulence over japan. passengers on board say it was so strong, it knocked some of the seats, some of them out of their seats, tossed the luggage around. you see photos of the aftermath. 747 managed to land safefully hong kong. an early morning house fire in fremont suspicious. it happened at a vacant home on mission boulevard near the sullivan underpass. took crews 45 minutes to knock down the flames. oh, it's not wednesday. it's not hump day. it's polina day. we give you a live look at olympic torch in the plaza in sochi. today is the start of the women's figure skating competition, and our bay area

15-year-old is among the contenders. >> check out the sochi selfie tweeted out by the san jose native this morning. looking calm, cool, collective, that a girl. performance on the international stage. >> bob redell joins us live at sharks ice where edmunds and others do their training. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. 15 years old, the past 13 years of those 15, spend most mornings here at sharks ice training, training here with these young ladies, if, of course, she weren't in sochi getting ready to make her olympic debut in an hour and a half. michelle is a coach here at sharks ice. you've seen her everybody the years. good morning. she's not the favorite but you said something interesting. you've been in the business a long time. that doesn't matter, huh? >> absolutely not. i think when you're at the olympics, nobody can take that experience from you, and when you get out there, i believe

anything can happen. i think that you can reach the podium, i think you can reach olympic gold. i think you can reach your wildest dreams. >> reporter: she's been skating here since she was 2 or 3. you didn't start noticing her and other people didn't start noticing her until the past few years. what have you noticed about her? >> it's her ice presence. she comes out here on a presence and she owns it. she comes out, she has confidence. she looks like an olympian, a champion. she look like she really is in it 150%. she's got a chance. her jumps, her artistry is amazing. whole attitude. >> how much is the fact that she's an olympian is luck, how much biology, how much is that's who she is? >> i think there's so many factors. i think biology. it's in you. there comes a time you're on the ice, you think i'm pretty good, i'm going for it. then you work hard. and then that's the

psychological part of it. then you get in here, putting 35 hours a week, you know, you eat, breathe, drink skating and think, i'm achieving something, i can do this. just a well-rounded athlete. >> reporter: must be exciting for you to see somebody who skates here to obviously be going to sochi? >> we are thrilled here. just the energy and the kids are excited, coaching staff is excited. everybody here is excited. it's just -- we're so excited, cheering her on from home. we want her to know the energy's alive and well at home while we clear her on. >> reporter: plenty of energy behind you. you don't have to look up, but stanley's bar, over the rink, around 7:00, people start showing up. they'll have a viewing party. she's supposed to be making her debut in the women's short program, her olympic debut. women's short program, around 7:30, 7:45 our time there. >> exciting. thank you, bob. go, polina. the whole thing, tremendous. >> there you go.

people are going to the sierra because they're getting snow up there. >> we are. it's ski week. people haven't left yet. you're going to get four good days on the mountain if you leave today. before you go, hold that thought. let's bring in brian hager, he joins us live from squaw valley. i know you have a lot going on. there's snow coming in now. but i have to know about the squaw prom, what's that all about? do you have a date, sir? >> the squaw prom is actually saturday the 22nd. a lot of fun. we've been doing it for years. always a great turnout. as of now, i don't have a date. i'm hoping. >> we'll have to get together during the commercial break. briefly, i want the snowfall as much as you do. i get to track it, talk about it. you get to shred the gnar on it. next week we are going to see quite a bit of snowfall. i think we're going to be back

up to 50% of average snowpack by next weekend. not this coming weekend, following weekend. because we have a significant dip in the jet stream headed our way and wet weather. but not before we warm you up for the next couple of days. snowfall coming in. now at about 44 degrees out there. that's the temperature at about 3,000 feet for today. our snow elevations, very high this morning, 7,000 feet. seeing rain, otherwise you want to keep that in mind, if you're traveling up there. temperatures are going to warm up. you can see what we are getting now is very light. that white is in the highest peak. back into the bay area, showers. slick conditions for morning drive. we have been getting a break with a lot of kids off this week in the south bay. we'll check on that, see what the showers are doing to your drive with mike in a moment. stay tuned. the golden gate bridge, nice and slick. san francisco, even where we're not picking up radar return, we have that steady drizzle. it's slick everywhere across the

week, vacation week for the school districts, lighter flow. commute will kick in now for north 87, 101, 285 and ease off earlier. here we saw slowing for 680 and 580 than we typically see on wednesday. wet roads, misty conditions, slick through the sunol, pleasanton and dublin areas. keep that in mind. lower the speeds toward the cloverleaf and off-ramp. drive speeds here for the east bay and east shore. all in the green zone. nice flow of traffic. live views towards oakland, 880, northbound, past the coliseum, easy spacing. toll plaza, slowing around that bend to the bay bridge toll plaza itself. coming off of this, actually getting on to the overcrossing is an issue. sun will dry things out. in the north bay, the issue of more traffic. just southbound 101 here at curve at terra linda, roadway

medal. but a couple of hours ago i got to speak to him one-on-one about his big win. >> reporter: guess who's here with me? we've been following him for weeks now, now he's an olympic gold medalist in the halfpipe free skiing. how has it sunk? >> it's a crazy whirlwind, once you win a gold medal, it's nonstop action. crazy but good. >> reporter: watching it on tv, conditions were crazy last night. >> yeah. the a winter sport and sometimes winter conditions strike. it takes a level of skiing down a bit to have the fresh snow in there, makes it a lot slower and all of the cool, new tricks i wanted to do went out the window. being able to make adjustments and still ski well is, you know, part of being able to compete well. and i think -- i'm honestly stoked on how everybody rode last flight.

everybody will put on a show regardle regardless. >> reporter: you instagram, tweet, pictures at top of the halfpipe, a lucky charm. it's that rock. did you find that here in sochi? >> she found it for me. this is my tradition, is that every time i go somewhere i pick up a rock and -- a heart-shaped rock and bring it home to remind her i've been thinking of her while i was gone. this time she flipped it over on me and brought me a little piece of home. brought me this from reno. it's in my pocket all night competing last night, my little lucky charm. >> reporter: a father of 2-year-old niyelle. she was watching from home. did she see your winning run? >> she saw it. we got a video that's posted on facebook of her getting super excited while i was competing and running up to the tv and giving me a kiss. so cute. >> reporter: i bet you can't wait to get home.

you had a crazy life leading up to the olympics, it's going to get crazier now. what's the next step? when are you heading back to reno? >> a gold medal is an amazing opportunity to go out and represent your sport to the world and i'm excited to go, do the media tour, talk to people, get them excited about skiing. and i'll go home. >> reporter: thank you, david wise, congratulations. well deserved. we always knew you were going to be a champion, superstar. so proud of you with your tricks and twists. >> reporter: class act, family man. always said his wife and daughter come first, skiing is number two. obviously he's a gold champion in all events as father, husband, skier. making an appearance on the "today" show. you'll be able to see that after "today in the bay." reporting from the sochi games, janelle wang, back to you. >> love it. he's going to make people excited about skiing. i don't know about all of the flips. i'm excited but i can't do that. >> polina coming up here.

a 29-year-old man faces an attempted murder charge, accused of attacking a 93-year-old woman while she was in her hospital bed. mary perez went to san francisco general with breathing problems last friday. she was resting in her room, staff members were wheeling orin zebest to the psych ward but they say they jumped off his gurney, ran into her room, and beat her. >> grabbed the i.v. pole and swung the pole to her head twice, she covered her head with her arm. >> perez is in intensive care. the hospital released a statement apologizing for the incident and promising an investigation. hospital officials say doctors see 4,000 patients on psych

the plane after it landed safely. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the passengers say they've never felt turbulence like this. the plane was rocking, it felt like it wouldn't stop, went on for two minutes, the overhead luggage compartment opened up and started hitting passengers in the head, some of the falling luggage. this morning, nine people recovering after the cathay pacific flight from sfo on the right to hong kong landed after experiencing severe turbulence over japan. 321 passengers, 21 crew members on board. eight people taken to the hospital, most discharged. some people, though, had to be taken out on stretchers. i wanted to show you twitter pictures of the aftermath, give you a sense how it was inside the plane, completely unstable. food trays tossed around. the cabin is a mess. airspace over the pacific ocean is prone to turbulence, particularly winter. sometimes it can't be detected beforehand. one passenger on that flight

slowdown, 880, heading into fremont and 680 for mission. overnight for the next four nights mission boulevard closed for work, continue to make progress but have to close the roadway for the next four nights, traffic control. slowdown, the cause of that, all of the cars south past the struck scales where there's puddling and ponding going on off the roadway. 880 moves smoothly. might need the windshield wipers. getting back to the maps, slowdown, sunol and pleasanton. slowdown kicks off and builds as all of the folks come out of livermore and pleasanton, slowing towards fremont. 580 nothing unusual. southbound 880 build as well past the san mateo and dumbarton bridges, right on schedule for the nimitzs freeway. dumbarton bridge okay. 92 reports of a slow roller, a car limping along the high-rise over to foster city.

morning, you know? they want to get those new boots. it's very exciting. and to see them advance and to progress in their skating, to know you had a little part of that pretty satisfying. >> reporter: harlick rooting from the bay area, hoping edmunds will be the latest medal winner to wear his boots. polina edmunds has a big support system. her enfire family, mom, dad, brother, family friend. polina is of russian descent. mother was important in russia and moved over when she was a teenager. she hasn't been back in years. her mom's happy to be back home and hopefully a lot to celebrate after polina hopefully medals. she's been training for this her entire life. entire coaching staff, training staff, and choreographer from russia originally. a lot to celebrate here.

extra edge to get her to sochi? >> i think when you see a young skater like michelle and farm with what polina has, look at confidence, how they step on 0 the ice, willing to give everything a try. willing to try that jump when you ask them and they're willing to land that jump and be expressive and hold that longer, i think polina has been doing that for years. this is her time to show that off at sochi. >> reporter: people have said this isn't her time, she should wait another four years. >> yes, i did hear that. she's so rezell yen and passionate. she said, now's my time. if you feel that, go for it. you've got nothing to lose. you go out and give it all. give it all you've got. get to that podium, absolutely. >> reporter: as a coach here at sharks ice what does it mean to have an olympian from here, grew up here, skating 13 of 15 years? >> it's such an honor. an honor to be on the ice here and work with all of the coaches that work with her. we're a family here. we really just support our own.
