good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with the two men accused of severely beating giants fan and south bay paramedic bryan stow. sources tell nbc news the men may take plea deals admitting to at least some of the guilt, as early as this morning. bob redell live in santa cruz where stow is still recovering from the attack at his family's home. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. an attack that left bryan stow brain damaged and unable to care for himself. the two men accused in that attack, the two dodgers fans, accused of putting him in that situation are expected to accept plea deals in a los angeles courtroom for allegedly attacking stow outside dodger stadium in march of 2011. this was just after the opening day game between the giants and the dodgers. according to nbc news, one of the suspects louie sanchez would plead guilty either all, some or a reduced version of the charges, you see there listed on

the screen. in exchange for eight years in state prison. and his co-defendant, marvin norwood, would agree to serve four years in state prison. again, this is not final with regards to the plea deal. a decision would be made in the courtroom. that hearing expected to start at 8:30 this morning in los angeles. after those sentences assuming they do have this plea deal go through the feds are expected to charge each man with a weapons crime since police did search norwood's home the day he was arrested and found them in illegal possession of a gun. sanchez is reportedly drunk at the time, that day three years ago. allegedly got into a shoving match with stow in the park lot after the game. both went their separate ways, then later was another confrontation, this time sanchez allegedly sucker punched stow and norwood, his sister's boyfriend at the time, joined in on the beating, allegedly fracturing stow's skull. stow is a paramedic, recovers at

home here in santa cruz. his family has posted an update on valentine's day. saying that not much has changed since the last update posted late september, that stowe's physical and mental struggles leave him exhausted. we recently shaved bryan's head and it was shocking to see the damage to his skull, seeing him stare at himself in the mirror was heartbreaking. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. the criminal case may be winding to a close, there is still a civil case in court. stow's family file add civil suit against the former owner of the dodgers, frank mccord among others. the suit alleges negligence on the part of stadium security and liability and negligent hiring. the civil trial was supposed to start last month but was delayed when the judge presiding said he was reassigned and a new judge will have to be chosen. we'll have an update on our website as well nbcbayarea.com. search bryan stow, we'll have

the latest details in our next newscast tonight. >> now to a story developing in ukraine. more protesters were killed as violence raged in kiev. a new truce has begun to crumble. you have a live look at independence square in kiev, the scare has been the center of the capitol there for hundreds of years and the center of fighting sin protests began. nbc's richard engel is in kiev, reports seeing police running away from positions around independence square. he saw police kill at least two protesters, in fighting, saw at least 20 serious injuries. engle is right there in the midst of it. he reports seeing people using pieces of wood to drag their injured into makeshift field hospitals including one at a luxury hotel. at least 28 people are now dead, hundreds have been hurt. the crisis in ukraine has forced one olympian to withdraw

freestyle skiing competition. >> in prime time at 8:00 gold medal finals in ladies figure skating, the half-pipe in women's freestyle skiing and the men's freestyle ski cross. >> who knows it better than janelle wang. she is in sochi this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, scott and laura. in front of the iceberg, polina edmunds told me she wanted to skate cleanly and she did. she skated beautifully last night but lacked a bit of speed and components to get higher up. she is currently in seventh place after the short program. but what a sight to see her on olympic ice last night. she appeared to be enjoying the moment. she was poised like a young lady but also happy and giddy like her 15-year-old self. if the teenager had nerves you couldn't tell at all. >> i was kind of thinking like when they announced my name and

i stepped on the ice my opening position is in the middle of the ice rink so i was standing on the olympic rings and i was telling myself to enjoy it because no matter what happens i'm at the olympics so. >> reporter: her entire family was in the stands at the iceberg, mother, father, two brothers cheering her on. after she skated she had a message for the bay area. >> i just want to say thank you for all of your support and your belief in me and really carrying me flew the competition. >> reporter: there is a lot of support in the bay area especially in the south bay where the teen is a sophomore at archbishop middy high school. several watch parties to cheer her on including at sharks ice where she trains and practices. edmunds is half russian. her mother is russian. it's been a joy to come back here, she can speak and understand people so it's been fun for her and her family. as for her chance of medaling i spoke to kristi yamaguchi about

safeway is up for sale. executives won't say who they are talking to but they are in talks with somebody to sell the grocery store chain. safeway operates about 1300 stores in the u.s. san francisco's gap says it will raise the hourly minimum wage for workers to $10 per hour in 2015. now for cities like san jose and san francisco, that's irrelevant, their legal hourly minimum wage is already over $10. it will have a big impact for people working in stores outside of california. shares in tesla motors jumped 12% in after hours trading after the company announced it planned to deliver more than 35,000 model s's this year. 150% more than it produced in 2013. it's the story we keep talking about facebook bying mountain view's what's app for 16 billion and 19 billion, that's billion with a b. we'll talk more about it coming

up. >> remember those wild pigs at the golf and country trub in san jose. it appears they are moving in on other parts of the city. there is a new report in silver creek where a pig wandered into a kitchen through an open back door. san jose allowed a temporary measure to allow hunters to trap and shoot the pigs in city limits. the ordinance will stay in place until december when council members will decide if it will be permanent. as the pigs i suppose. the best selling novelist james paterson giving away part of his personal fortune. he has start add program to give away $1 million to more than 50 stores across the country. he says with the invention of the e-book the future of brick and mortar stores are in peril. the new york times reports among the shops getting funding is book passage in marin and san francisco, and hicklebee's.

days ahead through this weekend we're going to hold onto the 70s. san francisco in the mid-60s, then monday things start to change. our temperatures stead we the clouds will increase as that atmospheric river returns to the bay area. next week overall looking very active. we're talking about major moisture coming our way. and really, really talking about measuring this rain in inches. this is the weather game changer, this is what happened a couple weeks ago. that's what we expect again so. we'll keep you updated. potentially six feet of snow on the way to tahoe. i love it. let's check the drive. >> let's take a look. first of all the map shows you the bay area of an easy drive. you expect that this time, as christina is talking about some of the south bay school district calls it ski week, whatever you do you have the week off in the south bay school traffic is slow, very easy. through this area yesterday we had a crash right around here, highway 85 at 28 and that caused

a backup into downtown. 280 north and 85 and 87 really slow because of folks trying to find another route. we expect a lighter flow again. a smooth drive out of the tri-valley, start of the build out of livermore. pretty typical for 580. by this arrow, the live camera in dublin and see the volume of traffic coming up. see how we have traffic flowing, there is the commute direction. good spacing, passing el charo. not a major concern. we'll see this change. highway 4 will get a slowdown. right now a little bit through antioch. and the rest of the east bay approach to the bay bridge no problems. richmond/san rafael, at speed a. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the stall has cleared. back to you. >> for "the tonight show" debut

emergency and want to know the paramedics know what they are doing, that was not the case at the rule ambulance company. workers were fired for allegedly buying credentials. they must take a cpr course every two years, that will cost two to four hours, not too much time. rural metro ambulance learned that saefrl of their paramedics were buying the certification card from a local instructor who was selling them without having to do the work. >> it appears as though the training that we would expect them to have gone through was not completed, and that there was financial transactions completed to get a cpr card. >> reporter: after rural metro investigated the initial claims, 24 workers admitted they rece e received those cards without taking the course. they were fired. in addition to faking the certifications the 24 individuals also had a history

the arsonist struck in 2012 while the family was in voncation. the next two happened while the home was being rebuilt. one neighbor wants to know why the family is targeted and says she is taking action in case the attacks are not over. >> we're going to put motion detectors so i think we're all trying to stand together and see if we can scare this person away. >> they do not think any one else is at risk. the family who owns the home is considering selling instead of rebuilding. >> the alameda county sheriff's office will use dogs to patrol oracle arena before and after and even during all home warriors games starting tonight. a spokesperson says the canine sweeps will be an important part of the arena safety plan. mayor chuck reed to give his final state of the city address. he will talk about the issues and opportunities facing the city this year, his son alex will introduce his father in the
