>> a shocking twist in the bryan stow beating case. nbc news the first to report the suspects plan to admit their guilt in exchange for shorter sentences. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. it was a brutal attack that left giants fan bryan stow with life long brain damage and now nearly three years after that beating, the suspects may change their pleas to guilty. bob redell is live in stow's hometown with exclusive details. >> reporter: yes, here in his hometown where bryan stow is recovering, scott, again from brain damage, unable to take care of himself, there are two men who authorities say are responsible for putting him in that situation. they are expected to accept plea deal this is morning. in under three hours in a los angeles courtroom for allegedly attacking stow outside a dodgers stadium in march 2011 after the opening day game between the giants and the

dodgers. according to nbc news, one of the suspects, a dodgers fan louie sanchez, would plead guilty to either all, some or a reduced version of the charges. you see they are listed on the screen. in exchange he would surf eight years in state prison. his co-defendant are marvin norwood, would agree to serve four years in state prison. again, this is not final. the decision will be made in the courtroom. the judge does have the final say. that hearing expected to begin around 8:30 this morning. assuming they serve those sentences, after the feds are expected to charge each man with a weapons crime since police searched norwood's home and found that they had a gun illegally. sanchez who was reportedly drunk at the time allegedly got into a shoving match with stow, a giants fan, in the parking lot after the game. both went their separate ways. later there was another

confrontation. this time sanchez allegedly sucker punched stow and norwood, his sister's boyfriend, joined in on the beating, they both fractured stow's skull. stow who was a paramedic recovers at his home in santa cruz. his family has been posting occasional updates on their bryan stow website saying that according to the recent up date, this past volumen tine's day. not much has changed since the last up date which was posted late september. this is one quote from the latest. they say we have, quote, mentioned it a million times but his sense of humor is what keeps us all going. we are coming up on three years since this happened and it's hard to believe the support and prayers that bryan still gets to this day. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll continue to cover that. thank you. >> a developing story in ukraine

where a shaky truce crumbled. an associated press reporter has seen 18 bodies laid out on the edge of a protesting encampment. one police man died after being shot 28 times. a live look at protesters ukrainian health ministry says 28 have died and nearly 300 injured during crashes. the unrest started months ago after the government took a bailout from russia instead of dealing with the european union. >> this morning dozens of bay area ambulance worker who is faked their credentials have been fired by the ambulance company they worked for. let's go to peggy bunker with more. >> reporter: can you imagine you have a medical emergency you expect the paramedics to show up at your house or business, to know what they are doing. this was not the case at the

santa clara county ambulance company. two dozen workers fired for buying their credentials. they must take a cpr refresher course. it takes two to four hours to get that completed. however, they learned in january several paramedics were buying their cpr certification cards from a local instructor selling them without doing the work. >> the training we would expect them to have gone through was not completed and that there was financial transactions completed to get a cpr card. >> reporter: after rural float investigated the initial claims they did discover that 24 workers admitted they received their certification cards without taking the course. they were fired. rural metro also adds in addition to faking the certification t individuals had a history of disciplinary

oakland road. you approach the 880 interchange. on the map, the sensors turned red. from 680 as you approach actually and story road. there is a accident incident reported. it sounds like a different location. but i'm going to watch them both on the reports. northbound to north 87 your alternate to get out of the area. we'll look at the rest of the traffic flow going for our speed through the tri-valley you have westbound 580 slowing, kicking in through livermore heading to dublin. 84 down through pleasanton and into livermore. making the merge to sunol. you approach the speeds through the east bay, in the green season for north 880, a nice flow to the bay bridge toll pla plaza. the cash lanes are backed up.

below. about 80 kids were in the activity center when the floor gave way. 35 were hurt. all are expected to survive. let's go back to the 2014 winter olympics in sochi. we give you a live look at the olympic torch and the mountains above sochi. this morning a lot of action on the slopes but i think most of the attention is going to be in the skating rink. we have ladies figure skating. >> among the hopefuls going for gold polina edmunds, 15-year-old student from san jose. polina skated with poise in the short program and she is going into the free skate in seventh place. >> i'm just happy that i skated a clean program, so that was my goal and to come out and do it is fantastic. >> polina's family watched proudly from up in the stands. now her family is with janelle wang live in olympic plaza. how exciting. i hope they know we are really

cheering from home. >> reporter: oh, yeah, they know. the bay area is cheering them on. they are here with me right now. we're right in front of the iceberg. competition begins in less than an hour from now. they are so kind to be out here with us. i'm go withing to introduce you to the family. we have james, the older brother, daniel, the younger brother, dad, mr. john edmunds and mom nina. this is polina's best friend anna who goes to willow glenn high school and her momñr is al the strength trainer. we have friends from russia to come root on polina. let's ask dad. how are you feeling watching your daughter? >> we felt great. very proud of her. she accomplished a lot to get through the program clean. did a great job. we're very proud. >> mom, watching your daughter skate is beautiful. and you know what, she has the cutest smile s. that her personality, always so happy?

>> yes. she did very well. i think -- i understand that too. >> she seemed like she was enjoying every moment. let's talk to the brothers. he is a junior shark, huge hockey fans. what did you think of your little sis? >> my sister, it was crazy to see her on the big screen and the stage and everything. the olympics, i don't know. i'm at a loss for words. it was great. >> reporter: daniel, what about for you? what are you enjoying watching your sister skate? >> it was great. she skated clean. that's what we're here for. i'm really proud of her. she did well. yeah. >> reporter: anything to say to the bay area? you know how much they love your daughter and how much they are rooting for her? have you received messages? >> we have a ton of messages, friends follow her closely and right after the performance congratulating us and everything. we've seen all of the parties down at the sharks ice and the

dance studio so we know everybody is watching. having a great time. we're happy to enjoy this with them. >> you are her best friend. how long have you been friends? >> basically since i was really young. basically since i was born. >> reporter: you wanted to be here for her? >> yeah. i thought it would be a great experience to be able to see my friend compete at such a high level of ice skating. it was really great. >> reporter: i know you are classmates and i'm sure at your high school are just like crazy overjoyed. we saw the parties before she left. what are the classmates feeling? >> they -- they all kind of like are supporting her a lot. they feel happy that she got here and there is someone representing the bay area. >> reporter: i want to thank the family and friends for talking

you have going on? >> we have a beautiful day ahead and weekend coming up. the snow is fabulous up in the mountain. i was up yesterday, it's skiing great. both of our parks got rebuilt as well so it's going to be a great weekend up here. >> you guys have more snow moving in next week. you know i'm a meteorologist and i love this stuff, and i wouldn't be saying this unless i truly believed it. i think it's possible, as of next week into the weekend, you guys could accumulate an additional six feet of snowfall. how does that sound? >> that sounds great. it's something we're really excited about up here. shg we're keeping an eye on and the more snow the better. >> that's right. you know, we want to take you to your tahoe report. we're going to see a pretty nice day today. in san jose looking good, 43 degrees, 62 degrees at noon. at 4:00 p.m., 66 degrees. so we're looking pretty good here locally. if you wanted to head up you want to make sure you have the

winter gear ready. temperatures are going to be in the 40s in tahoe as of this afternoon. so keep that in mind. upper 60s to low 70s. 71 in the east bay, the peninsula at 68. and in the south bay 69 degrees. that means you can give your heater a break. take some of that pg&e money that you pocket and hey, take it and hit the beach. it's going to be nice. 69 degrees in santa cruz. half moon bay 64. low clouds early, a nice sunny finish. even warmer as we head through tomorrow. and then things start to change. so we encourage you to get outdoors. let's tell you what's happening in the bay area. san francisco and most of the bay area now is actually in bloom. we want you to check out tulip mania, it's free. 10:00 a.m., pier 39, tell you all about the tulips and they are beautiful out there. thousands of blooming tulips. you can take a self-guided tour. it's comfortable through monday. then the pattern changes. we're talking big rain in the

bay area. and big snowfall on the way to tahoe. let me threat futurecast tell the story. we stop the clock at 6:00 a.m. all of that rain starting to move into the bay area. that will continue all the way through wednesday night and then the storm systems keep on coming through as we head throughout the weekend and next week. which bodes well for our drought. we want the rain, we want the fruit and vegetables. here is mike inouye. >> we're all getting hungry in the early morning traffic as well. looking here where hungry for clearing. we see the flashing light. this is your second major incident of the south bay area. northbound 101 approaching 680 where there is a truck trying to get to the shoulder. not quite there from the looks but it's tough to weave through those. we'll look at the map and show you the slowdown for the south bay. the rest of the bay area pretty predictable. that incident by the 280 sign. that's where it is.

the second of them, the original cause for the backup 101 and oakland road. there may be a second incidents in that slow drive approaching as well so we're watching that. sounds like much of the detail is the same. more folks 280 northbound through the downtown san jose area. expect more traffic for the time being. the south bay smooth, 87 slowing around kertner and 85 should lower the speeds over the next 15 to 20 minutes. for the south bay, looking to the tri-valley, typical for westbound 580 through the dublin area. highway 84 slows through livermore. pleasanton because of the volume of traffic. in the upper 50s down toward sunol for 680. typical pattern for this thursday. that's not a lighter commute. we expect that around the bay because the south bay school is off for vacation. we had an incident, a bus has moved off the road. no people on board injured

>> time 6:25. here are today's business and tech head lines. safeway may soon be sold. the ceo says the company is in talks of a possible sale but safeway hasn't released who it is talking with. safeway is the second largest supermarket chain in the country. >> san francisco based gap is raising its minimum hourly wage across all six of the company's brands across the country u.s. employees will make $9 an hour this year and $10 an hour in 2015. california's minimum wage is already $9 an hour. it will rise to $10 an hour in

2016. some cities in california including san jose and san francisco already $10 an hour. >> facebook is buying what's app, $19 billion mostly in stock for the start up. and we have seen a lot out of that company in the last few days. in fact, one of our crews found empty bottles at the office left in the celebration. google expanding its high speed internet services to 34 cities across eight states. san jose is one of the cities that will get google fiber, most of the south bay in fact. including sunnyvale and cupertino, santa clara too, the company says fiber lets people surf the internet 100 times faster than now. the service competes with cable and the phone companies. those are some of the business and tech head lines, back to you, laura. >> thanks so much. 6:26. still ahead a gold medal grudge match. live to sochi to see how team

women have their gold medal game. this is a huge rivalry, team usa versus canada. they will compete for the gold, kickoff starts in about 2 1/2 hours. you can watch it live on nbc bay area. every gold medal game since 1998 in nagano has come down to u.s. and canada. america won the inaugural game in nagano but canada won every single one since then including the 2010 gold at vancouver. the american women say the past is the past. >> this is our moment. it's it new think about what happened in the past and not to think about okay, maybe if i'm young, what will happen in the future but what can we do tomorrow. that's what we're focused on and so excite we'd earned our slot in the gold medal game. it's time to try to earn a gold medal. >> we worked four years for this one moment. 60 minutes of hockey left for us

skull. stow who is a paramedic recovers at his home here in santa cruz. his family has been ofting updates from time to time on the family's website. the last was this past valentine's. they say not much has changed since the last update which was posted late september. stow's physical and mental struggles leave him exhausted at the end of the day. and i'm quoting here, we recently shaved brian's head. it was shocking to see the damage to his skull. seeing him stare at himself in the mirror was heart breaking. rob ra bell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. crile the criminal case may be winding to a throws there is still a civil case. the family filed against the former owner of the dodgers, frank mccourt, among others. it alleges negligence on the part of stadium security and negligent hiring.

she was so comfortable on olympic ice. she appeared to be poised but happy and giddy like her 15-year-old self. you couldn't tell at all. >> i was kind of thinking like when they announced my name and i stepped on the ice my opening is on the middle of the rink so i was standing on the olympic rings and just telling myself to enjoy it because no matter what happens i'm at the olympics. >> reporter: her entire family was in the stands at the iceberg. mother father, two brothers, best friend, cheering for her and they are back here again for part 2. i just spoke to them. >> felt great. very roud of her, accomplished a lot to get through clean, the first skated on international and did a great job. >> mom, watching your daughter skate is beautiful. she has the cutest smile.
