from the area. i saw flashing lights for mission boulevard. let me show you where this is on the map. between 880 and warm springs road, continuing tonight and tomorrow night, we'll have closures because of that ongoing road work. b.a.r.t. to san jose a project as folks know. we have an accident, a crash reported, sounds like a car drove off the roadway at the clover leaf so they have to move that. no major injuries and light flow of traffic. 880 is open. just the on ramp in the eastbound direction. as you approach southbound 880 out of hayward, union city no problem. a new incident off 580. i'll lit know if it's a problem. it's near the castro valley y. >> trigger man behind the eighth homicide of the year is claiming self defense this morning. police were called to a home on pine ridge way near clayton road by the homeowner. who said two people broke into his house and opened fire.

bob redell is live with the latest on this. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. you can see the crime scene investigators still on the scene on pine ridge way. this happened around 8:00 last night and according to police the man who lives here tells them that someone as you mentioned broke into the house and started firing shots at him. fortunately missing the man. the man armed himself and fired back and apparently hitting the person who tried to break in. the man who lives here did call 911, he did report to police that he saw two people taking off, they got into a car and then sped off. a little bit later police say somebody dropped a person off at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. that person was declared dead at the hospital and police believe that person they found at the hospital dead from a gunshot wound was the same person who tried to break into this home on pine ridge way. the homeowner according to police acting in self defense

firing back at a person trying to break into his castle last night around 8:00. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. >> four are dead, a woman in jail accused of shooting rampage at a native american tribal head quarters where she was once a leader. it happened yesterday at the tribal office about three hours northeast of chico. investigators say sherry rose the past leader of the tribe opened fire at the tribal office yesterday as members met to talk about evicting rose and her son from their property. they say rose shot five people, stabbed another when she ran out of bullets. four of the victims died, two others in critical condition this morning. rose was taken into custody outside of the office. >> a fugitive from montana has been spotted in the bay area. take a look. this is kevin briggs, wanted in bozeman, montana on attempted rape charges for allegedly attacking a police officer.

he was arrested earlier this month but escaped the same day. he is a convicted felon and a registered sex offender. investigators consider him armed and dangerous. the fbi says briggs was spotted in oak laundry, berkeley and san francisco last week. they think he could be headed through the state in either direction. >> a former san jose sex crimes detective who admitted to exchanging inappropriate pictures with a teenager will be sentenced today. tony praguer pledded guilty the charge in exchange for a shorter sentence. he faces six months in jail and 500 hours of community service. the 34-year-old detective requested, received and exchanged sexually explicit pictures with a teen girl in 2011. >> a fix is on the way for a dangerous stretch of roadway on the peninsula. some residents say ralston between 101 and 92 not safe. they call it daunting to drivers. more than 700 people signed a

petition asking the city council to make it safer. the city is paying a consulting firm to come up with a solution. some of the recommendations include adding a round about and lane reductions and new signals. >> a bay area store getting a new look. it will change the lives of some of the shoppers. the whole foods in fremont now more accessible to people who can't see thanks to a 10-year-old student at the california school of the blind. josh goldenberg and his family started the nonprofit to get grocery stores to add braille labels. they have been successful at some stores in the fremont whole foods will be the first in the bay area. josh and his friends will celebrate the victory using new braille labels for a scavenger hunt later today. a lifetime of training and nearly three weeks of competition wraps up this weekend in sochi. a live look right now at the olympic flame still burning

bright. by this time monday morning that flame will be extinguished. one of the last golds up for grabs is men's hockey. in a few hours team usa will face off against canada. >> this is a semifinal game, but the winner moving on to gold medal round sunday, a lot of people believe this is the game of the men's tournament. both teams made up of nhl stars, and with the u.s. women losing just a devastating loss in the gold medal game to canada yesterday and the u.s. men losing in the gold medal game four years ago for many americans today is all about retribution, something the u.s. men are trying hard to downplay. >> you play for your country you want to represent as best as you can. >> it's not about beating canada, it's winning the gold medal. there's a lot of good teams we have to play so far. and we've handled those pretty well so far. this is a big one. >> they will face off against two teammates.

both play for canada. >> take a look at this. apparently the loser has to keep justin bieber. cain plays four the u.s. the company behind the bill board says just having a little fun. a petition to get bieber sent back to canada now has over 250,000 signatures and the white house must respond. >> as we mentioned the u.s. women's hockey team recovering from a gut wrenching loss but a little bright spot. silver medalist julie chu will be the flag bearer in the closing ceremony for team usa. >> well, let's talk about polina. it's not her last. polina edmunds shined in her debut on the world stage. >> middy high school sophomore

clear and mostly clear to start, a little on the breezy side. especially at the coast. i can tell you right now the wind will help keep our sky clear today. and abundant sunshine, flirting with records. as we head through tonight the sun sets at 5:53 and temperatures are going to drop by about 5 degrees per hour once that sun sets. starting at 6:00, make sure you have a jacket or sweater ready. you plan on a night on the town. see if mike is. good morning to you. >> two kids. will be on the couch maybe. looking here north 101, but we love it, we say that because we're parents. moving under the 880, 280 interchange. bob is not far from here. he continues to talk about that overnight shooting. north 101, a smooth flow of traffic through san jose near 101 and 680 and then i'm going to circle where bob s. this is a good deal away from the freeway.

>> one of the two men who pleaded guilty attacking bryan stow could be released from prison soon because of time served. the stow family confronted the men in court and say no sentence will ever be long enough. >> the time you serve is insignificant compared to what bryan must endure. however the years that you spend in prison is what you deserve. >> i envy those people who can forgive others who commit crimes against their loved ones. i'm here to say i'm not one of those people. >> the stow family spoke. norwood had four years of prison and sanchez to eight years. in a rare move the judge also scolded the men. >> that you are complete cowards when it comes to that. you don't even engage in a fair fight. you have to overtake him in that

way. and that is unfortunate. >> bryan stow was not in court. he continues to suffer seizures while he rehabs at his parents' home. both sanchez and norwood face federal gun possession charges after their arrest in 2011. >> developing news this morning, new hope in the violence in ukraine could end soon. you crane's president announced early presidential elections and promising to bring opposition members into government. so far no comment from opposition leaders meeting among themselves. >> you have people out there who are tired of the corruption that's grown worse, tired of the authoritarian tendencies. >> dozens have been killed at least 70 yesterday alone. >> work on a san francisco skyscraper is on hold this morning. cal oshia trying to figure out what caused scaffolding to collapse. two workers were hurt when it came down.

it's the new sales force building. the men were carpenters working on the 30-story building and were tethered to the scaffolding. one worker fell 40 feet, another 30 feet. they were rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. >> google reportedly working on an app that would log people into wi-fi hot spots. for that and the rest of the news let's turn to seema mody. good morning. >> hey scott. let's start with the markets. futures are higher after stocks close near the high on thursday, invest terse appear to have shrugged off news on unemployment and inflation and manufacturing. today data on home sales expected to decline, that's chalked up to the bad weather. google is reportedly working on an app that can automatically log you onto wi-fi hot spots.

>> this morning a vietnam veteran will be honored for saving someone. they will honor donny with a certificate at a ceremony. in november the marine was at a raiders game when he saw a woman perched on the third deck ready to jump. he sprung into action, breaking her fall with his own body. his arms were badly bruised but no broken bones. the 20-year-old woman suffered serious injuries but survived. >> the landlord who sued tim lincecum claiming he trashed her town house now owes him $100,000. lincecum and his former landlord reached agreement yesterday. the landlord was suing for $350,000 in damage. she said lincecum left the san francisco townhome a mess after the 20 the en -- the 2010

season. he sued her back. the pitcher says the landlord was trying to take advantage of his money and his public profile. >> 4:50. a bay area girl scout found an interesting location to sell her cookies. look at this. 13-year-old girl scout set up shop in front of a medical marijuana club in san francisco's excelsior neighborhood. the green cross is the facebook page. she sold out of cookies in 45 minutes. the girl scouts of northern california and the mother says they have no problem with her selling the cookies in front of the pot shop. in fact, there is word she'll be out there again on saturday. >> 4:51. still ahead, jimmy fallon welcomes the first lady. >> instead of potato chips a healthy alternative is kale chips. >> gross. >> not gross. >> wow.
