"today in the bay's" peggy bunker is here with the latest on this developing story. good morning. >> good morning. that really is the big question. after the deadliest day yet in kiev independence square with 100 protesters dead, an all night session has ended with progress ending the conflict. thursday saw the physical fighting at its worst. opposition groups once again said they lost 100 people, the ukraine government disputes that number, they say 77 people died in the violence. with only two options, more violence or a resolution, ukrainian president viktor yanukovych agreed to an emergency session with the foreign ministers from germany, france and poland and opposition leaders. negotiations went all night, they ended about 7:20 you crane time. announced a deal had been made and that a quote coalition government would now be formed.

this picture here is the reality of the tides of power shifting in the past 48 hours. a couple days ago police seemed to be burning the protesters out. after protesters took police hostage and began to gain ground, police boarding buses, escort bid the protesters, the opposition, in what became the only obvious way for the police to escape unharmed. so you see them ushering them on the buses. let's take you live now to independence square, take a look at the camp. this protest has been going on about three months, really only exploding into violence in the past week. it should be noted that really it's way too early to assume that this resolution reached will end the violence there in kiev. after all will have been two truces so far, neither of them prevented the deadly wave of violence we witnessed on tuesday and thursday. >> thank you.

i know you'll continue to monitor that. >> a homeowner in san jose is claiming self defense this morning after shooting and killing one of two men trying to break into his home last night. it happened on pine ridge way near clayton road not far from mount pleasant high school. nine hours later police are still on the scene. bob redell with new information from officers. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. they were on the scene until about with five minutes ago. they wrapped up here at this home on pine ridge way where for the past several hours they have been processing the scene and collecting evidence. we did see them bring out a long object covered in a paper bag. they would not tell us if that was a rifle or something else. the homeowner wasn't hurt. considering what happened. around 8:00 a man broke into his home here on pine ridge way, and started firing shots at him. apparently missing the man who lives here. the homeowner then grabbed his gun and fired back, hitting his

unwelcome guest in his home at least once. the homeowner called 911, alerted police, he told officers he saw the man that he shot hop into a car with another person, sped off. a short time later they did find the man at a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead after being shot by the homeowner here on pine ridge way. as you can see behind me, the police as i mentioned, have left. they are saying that this was an act of self defense, making this man who was shot and killed trying to break in, the eighth person to be killed, murdered, here in the city of san jose. again they are saying this was an act of self defense. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> today san jose state will hold the second 18 series of public meetings about campus hate crimes. the 18-member task force was formed to create new policies after four students were arrested accused of bullying a

black student on campus. the group is considering new rules and policies, one of the suggestions in a previous meeting was diversity training for every student. the meeting is at 5:30. >> we're going to get more details about a recent case of measles discovered in the bay area. state health officials announced last week a cal student who had not been vaccinated has come down with the measles. the student attended uc-berkeley for almost a week until the measles were discovered. health officials will offer an update at 10:00 this morning. polina edmunds continues to celebrate her successful debut. >> at 15 she made an international name for herself and proved last night she belongs with the top figure skaters in the world. let's check in with janelle wang live in sochi's olympic park. hi, janelle. it was thrilling to watch polina from here.

>> reporter: she is so graceful. she finishes top ten in the world at a young age of 15. she has a bright and beautiful future ahead. i got to speak with her minutes after she got off the ice last night. >> i'm feeling really good. i'm really happy that i skate hide two programs here and of course i would have liked to have come out and done a clean skate. but for the most part i did a pretty good job. i came back strong after my fall so i'm excited about that. >> you know the bay area is going crazy, they have watch parties in the south bay, all over the bay area. can you feel the love? >> yes, i can. it's so -- it's so nice to have everybody back there supporting me and believing in me. >> i talked to your dad, your mox, friends from russia, you have a big group supporting you. >> i had my mom come to the olympic village a couple days ago and she was just so happy. my dad came today before the long and i walked him through it. he was really impressed as well. so that was fun.

i can't wait for tomorrow because tomorrow my brothers and my best friend is coming to the villa village. i can't wait to show them around. >> what's next, 2018? >> definite. i'd love to come back. a great experience and i have four years to go so i really just want to keep building up my strength and seeing how far i get in the sport and right now i can't wait to train for world. >> reporter: and we will be following her. now, she showed off some stuffed animals last night. did you see that. i think we have video of that. they are her good luck charms, the teddy bear given to her by her coach and the hedgehog given to her by a girl from the bay area. she had two others given to her by classmates at middy high as well as teammates on the skating ice at san jose sharks, so those are her good luck charms she brought. she made an appearance on the "today" show which you will see in a couple hours. she'll spend the rest of the day

we're following this morning. at 5:08, firefighters have just knocked down a two-alarm fire in san leandro. these are live pictures. crews called to the home near the intersection of williams and alvarado. it happened just before 4:00. you can see how active it is. it's about a block south of the san leandro bart station. there are no injuries to report so far and an overhaul is in progress. a lot of crews still out on the scene. something we'll continue to monitor. >> in the meantime, meteorologist christina loren joins us with the forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you. happy friday. and yeah, you made it. we have a good looking weekend shaping up. temperatures starting out pretty chilly, make sure you grab a jacket. 50 degrees now in san francisco, 39, a little chilly in the north bay. this is where you might want to pull out the heavy coat all the way up to san francisco. take you into this afternoon, temperatures comfortable in the

been working tirelessly to put braille on store shelves so everyone can shop independently. the whole foods is on board. we're going to get a chance to meet joshua goldenberg here to celebrate this accomplishment. he and his friends from the school for the blind will have a scavenger hunt. joshua was born blind. when he was 6 the kind of reading he was learning didn't apply to picking out things in the store. he and his parents started the joshua foundation to put braille in stores. they talked about doing it one market at a time. >> to him he is no different than anybody else. so why is the world different when it comes to him? that's what he's trying to figure out. that's what we're going to try to change one step at a time. for him, for everybody. >> reporter: his mom says when

outdoors and enjoy our bay area. we're staying nice and warm. climbing through monday. by monday 72 degrees, comfortable conditions and yeah, you can hit the beach and even the slopes this weekend. you got to love california. 67 degrees in monterey, santa cruz 71, and yeah, we've got a little snow headed our way next week. starting on tuesday, then a lot of snow wednesday through the weekend. so, if you want the fresh powder you might be looking toward better skiing conditions next week. if you want some pretty good powder we have with six feet at the base at heavenly. 53 degrees in south lake tahoe for saturday. 55 degrees on sunday. let's see how your drive is shaping up. >> overall it's friday and early, we don't see much problem. we'll talk about the peninsula, got a report in from chp. 101 at whipple. the off ramp might have traffic control. there is a stalled vehicle. 101 and 280 move smoothly.

it's just the whipple off ramp. the south bay we'll get to in a second. i want to talk about northbound 680 around sycamore valley road. reports of a pursuit ending in a crash there at sycamore valley road or near the off ramp. the same area where there is construction and we're getting more details. the latest pursuit was reported at bollinger canyon road. a smoother drive on westbound 580. that's typical build about this time for a friday. north 680 the slowdown has cleared and no problems southbound through sunol into fremont an easy drive. the northbound route moves smoothly. there is construction and debris north of the airport for 101. i circled where bob has been reporting about the activity and shooting and these are on the hills outside of the alum rock area. it's not affecting your on and off ramp. back to you. >> thanks so much.

5:20. san francisco company wants to buy the petaluma slaughter house at the center of a meat recall. according to the chronicle marin sun farms plans to purchase rancho feeding corporation by the end of the month. executives at marin sun farms want to take over the facility because they are worried the slaughter house would close down leaving local producers without a supplier. the deal is reportedly in escrow and should be completed by the beginning of next month. steve jobs' face could be on a u.s. postal stamp in 2015. that's what a document obtained by "the washington post" is suggesting. jobs is on the list of u.s. icons set to appear on stamps next year. elvis and johnny carson on the list as well. weert bay area ties, good old peanuts, charles m. schultz spent his final years in santa rosa. who is not a fan of peanuts. >> i'm not sure steve would have liked going to snail mail.

lake tahoe's maddie bowman flew from the half-pipe to the top of the body yum in the debut of the free ski half-pipe. >> she dazzled and came away with a gold medal. janelle wang joins us in sochi. janelle, you talked to maddie, i understand, a couple hours ago. >> reporter: i am so happy for maddie. she deserves this. she's always solid on the half-pipe. this is the free ski half-pipe which made its debut in these olympics, basically what shaun white does but on skis, you know, reno's david wise won on tuesday, this time south lake tahoe's maddie bowman for the

an army combat veteran, possibly having served in vietnam. he encountered gun fire again last night from an intruder in his home where for several hours this morning you can see in this video police have been processing the scene, bringing in evidence in brown paper bags and a long object, would not say whether it was a rifle or something else. what is remarkable is that this homeowner was not hurt during this encounter. considering what happened it was around 8:00, a man broke into his home and started firing several shots at him, missing him. the homeowner grabbed his gun and fired back, hitting that intruder at least once, the wounded man hopped into a car, sped off. his accomplice dropped him off at a hospital where he was pronounced dead. no word on the location of the man who was driving the car or was with the intruder. the homeowner did call 911 and by all appearances is cooperating with police. police tell us that this, the eighth homicide this year for the city of san jose, was an act

of self defense. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> interesting. thanks, bob. >> a former san jose sex crimes detective who admitted exchanging inappropriate e-mails with a teenager will be sentenced today. tony frager pleaded guilty the charge in exchange for a shorter sentence. he faces six months in jail, 500 hours community service. the 34-year-old detective requested, received and exchanged sexually explicit pictures with a teen girl back in 2011. >> one of the two men who pleaded guilty to attacking giants fan bryan stow could soon walk free. marvin norwood was sentenced to four years in prison but might get out early because of time already served. louie sanchez got eight years. both admitted to beating stow in the park lot of dodger stadium in 2011. they face federal gun possession charges after their arrest. >> to a developing story overseas, chaos in ukraine parliament after a decision is

it's not the first time we've seen this in ukraine. seems on a yeefrly basis we see fist fights break out. it happened after the speaker announced there would be a delay in the debate how to reducian you covich's power. punches were thrown, people took off coats and threw them. back outside now as we take to you a live look here of independence square, you can see it looks rather calm. you see some of the tent city there is that propped up from the protesters camped there for three months. we should note it's too early to assume this resolution reached will end the violence. is there have been two truces. neither of them prevented the deadly violence we have seen over the past week. >> thank you. >> today, farmers could find out how much water they get from the federal government. last year some warmers got 20% of what is considered normal

from the feds and many expect much less this year. governor brown declared california's drought emergency last year and officials have promised millions in help. but they have not said how much water they will allow to be released into canals and reservoirs. >> and christina loren, i remember you saying yesterday snow like maybe 50% of what we need. which is good news >> by next week. >> the other good news is i'm going to stop that clock on sunday to reach that 50% mark. we still have more rain and snow on the way for monday into tuesday. however, i do have to say that with caution. as you know, february is the wettest month across the bay area. through the next few months our rain chances typically aren't as good so we need this rain, we hopefully will tap into that atmospheric river. i think we're going to. 44 in san jose. we've got a warming trend before we get the rain. and you'll notice that on the seven-day forecast right there at the bottom of your screen. san francisco this morning waking up with 50 degrees. the golden gate bridge,

typically we have fog this time of year, really none to show you this morning. it's nice and clear, 64 degrees at lunch time in the city, a nice day shaping up there. and then you'll start to drop off at about 4:00 p.m. at the coast with wind increasing. so this is what you can expect for this friday. cold and mostly clear start. throughout this afternoon abundant sunshine, all the way from the coast through your inland valleys. then by tonight the sun will set at 5:53 and temps drop like a rock after that. then we have changes to tell you about. so enjoy the 70s for today, tomorrow, all the way through next mont. 70 degrees for the south bay. temperatures are going to remain comfortable as i said before, but you want to get outdoors because next weekend overall not looking that great. we start that storm system the first one tuesday 9:00 p.m. into the north bay, then we get storm system after storm system in the bay area. i know people are excited about

this, i for one am, let's see if mike is. >> yeah, because that's going to mean a lot of stuff for me to report on chp. be careful. the last reports i have that means less of you are involved in anything out there. looking toward 580, more of us all on the roadway right about now. starting to build for the tri-valley in out of the altamont pass. this is not a problem as far as the flow at this scene. we're looking over toward the map. the same area marked with the arrow. a slower drive for 84 through livermore, typical pattern there. you head north and approach danville and sycamore valley road, as a result of that pursuit there is some activity but the off ramp remains open. no outstanding suspects and no major injuries, that's good news. we'll track that on the news center as well. the flow of traffic is not affected by that activity. a smooth drive across the antioch bridge t northbound side

reopened. and westbound highway 4 starts that slowdown we see out of antioch. moving at seeds toward the bay bridge. and the south bay starting a little build now. back to you. >> the fix is on the way for a dangerous stretch of roadway on the peninsula. some belmont residents say ralston avenue between 101 and 92 not safe. too crowded for cyclists and daunting for drivers. more than 700 people signed a petition asking the council to make it safer. the city is paying a consulting firm, $150,000, to come up with a solution. some of the recommendations may include adding a round about, lane reductions and new traffic snols. >> a live look this morning from sochi. we learned who will be carrying the flag in the closing ceremony. >> as the u.s. men get ready, a

he was born blind and when he learned to read braille he was surprised to find out that it didn't help him when he went to the grocery store with his family to help pick things out. he asked his mom how am i going to shop if there is no braille? how could i pick things out. he and his family started on a mission to change that in southern california. first approaching a grocery store manager who said yes to the braille label. >> for him to be able to go out and touch something and do this on his own, it makes him feel part of instead of being away from everybody else. >> he felt that first label on there and went m-i-l-k, mommy it says milk. i can read it. >> reporter: what a good feeling that was. they started the joshua foundation with the aim of getting braille in grocery stores, one store at a time. now today he's 10 years old. he and his buddies from the california school for the blind will be here to show off how

every morning especially on a friday. you're part of our morning family. i'm happy to tell our family about what great weather is coming our way and we still need the rain and it too is in the forecast. temperatures are chilly. taking the san jose, what we expect throughout this afternoon. at lunch time 63 degrees. you know we've got the air quality open up the windows in the home. let the clean air in. 67 degrees. and you can give your heater a break. all the way through the upweekend. you'll notice that in the seven-day forecast. we've got the warming trend in the last two days shows you the rain is coming in. so here's what we expect as far as your high temperatures go. 70 in the south bay. 65 in san francisco. 69 degrees in the north bay. if you live in the south bay this is where we're headed through the next few days. temperatures are going to be unseasonably warm. average this time of year is 64 degrees. in the south bay. so we head throughout day temperatures are above average and we're going to stay that way all the way through monday. then the changes arrive on

investigators say sherry rhodes with the tribe opened fire at the tribal office yesterday. as members met to talk about evicting her and her son from their property. they say roads shot five people, stabbed another as she ran out of bullets. four of those victims died, two others in critical condition. roads was taken into custody outside of the office. >> this morning a vietnam veteran will be honored for saving a raider fan who jumped from the third dot of the coliseum. coliseum authority will honor donny with a certificate at a ceremony in a few hours. in november the marine was at raiders game when he saw a woman perched on the third deck ready to jump. he sprung into action, breaking her fall with his body. his arms were badly bruised. the 20-year-old woman suffered serious injuries but she survived. >> time 5:50. when it comes to business it's location location location. one bay area girl scout found the perfect location to sell her cookies.

welcome back. in a surprising twist, the landlord who sued giants tim lincecum claiming he trashed her luxury town house now owes him $100,000. lincecum and his former landlord reached agreement yesterday outside of court, the landlord was suing the pitcher for $350,000 in damages. she said lincecum left the san francisco town house a mess after the 2010 season even stole things out of the house. lincecum sued back calling her allegations baseless. the pitcher says the landlord was trying to take advantage of his money and his public profile. >> a bay area girl scout found an interesting location to sell
