>> smoke, flames and flashing lights. we'll tell you why firefighters had to call for backup twice as they battled massive flames at a bay area home. a good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. new this morning, right now firefighters and trucks are blocking the street near the corner of williams and alvarado street because of that early morning fire near an leandro boulevard. the fire broke out just before 4:00 this morning. firefighters said they had to call for backup because the flames were so heavy. when they first arrived on the scene. the flames are out, the crews are still on the scene keeping an eye. no word on a cause. nobody hurt. >> this morning a deal in the works in ukraine. will it be enough to end the violent clashes. we have a live look at central kiev. thousands of protesters are still out in force this morning. despite street battles that killed dozens and injured hundreds more.

with the latest on the developing story let's go to peggy bunker. good morning. >> good morning. the actual number of people killed in this conflict is in dispute, opposition forces report about 100 killed, the ukraine government says no, it's about 77 who have died in the conflict. the ukrainian president has agreed to relinquish some power after a peace deal that bartered his power and lasted all night long. that emergency session was held last night with foreign ministers from russia, germany, france and poland and opposition leaders, that is a key fact to take note of. the talks went on all night ending about with 7:30 this morning and described as being extremely difficult. in that same website announcement he announced a coalition government will be formed, one that includes opposition forces. after that was posted, fighting broke out not in the streets but in ukraine's parliament.

that was just the beginning of this braul. it escalates. you see shirts come off, bell throw coats, chairs tipped over. it broke out after the speaker who is a close ally of the president announced there would be a delay in the debate how to reduce the president's power. the chamber erupted over that. they were ready to make those decisions. and punches started to be thrown. this is not uncommon. there are so many brawls there you can pick them out basically about one a month. it should be noted that the deal not yet signed. many are holding their breath to see if it will hold. previous truce agreements did not but those deals did not have foreign ministers i in on the agreement like this one does. >> thank you, peggy. san jose homeowner says he had no choice but to shoot a man trying to break into his home. the shooting happened last night at a home on pine ridge way near clayton road not far from mount pleasant high school. that's where bob redell joins us

live. officers just left the scene there. >> reporter: about an hour ago. good morning to you, scott. after several hours here at this home processing the scene, collecting evidence, we saw them bringing out items in brown paper bags including one long object in a brown paper bag. when i asked the crime scene tech or the detective if that was a rifle they wouldn't say. this happened around 8:00 last night. the homeowner here according to a neighbor is an army combat veteran, possibly having served in vietnam, was inside when someone broke into his home and started firing shots at him. remarkably, he was unscathed, the shooter missed, but the homeowner pulled out his gun and started firing back and hit the intruder at least once. he tells police that the intruder hopped into a car with another man, they sped off. they were headed to a hospital, the accomplice left the intruder at the hospital, no word on

where the accomplice is at but the intruder was pronounced dead at the hospital. by all appearances the homeowner is cooperating with police, he is the one who did call 911 and so far police are calling this an act of self defense. this is the eighth homicide this year for the city of san jose. police telling us, again, this was an act of self defense, a man breaking into another man's house, a situation where he had to fire back and that person, the intruder, was shot and killed. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:04. today san jose state will hold the second in a series of public meetings about campus hate crimes. the task force was formed to create new policies after four students were arrested accused of bullying a black student on campus. the group is considering new rules and policies. one of the suggestions in a previous meeting was diversity training for all students. today's meeting is 5:30 at the

campus engineering building. >> more detail this is morning about a recent case of measles discovered in the bay area. the state health officials announced last week a cal student who had not been vax napted had come down with the measles. the student attended classes at uc-berkeley, rode b.a.r.t. for a week before the measles were discovered. health officials will offer an update at 10:00 this morning. >> maybe you need vitamin d in your system. let's check the forecast. meteorologist christina loren, sunshine going to come out on us today. >> oh, yeah, it's going to be out there in full force which means yes, beach weather has returned. good friday morning to you. temperatures are chilly to start. we're in the 40s. 47 in san francisco, 37 degrees in the north bay this morning. so yeah, just about 20, 30 miles up the road from san francisco temperatures drop. make sure you're ready for that. we're looking pretty good, show your daypart forecast for the south bay. by lunch time today, 63 degrees, a comfortable noon reading for this time of year.

up to 67 at 4:00 p.m. we're going to round out the day in the south bay at about 70 degrees at 4:00 p.m. so gorgeous conditions. your microclimates tell that story. south bay looking like one of the warmest locations. warm conditions along the pens opinions and in san francisco. 65 degrees for pacific heights. take you into the north bay, temperatures are going to be downright comfortable in wine country. nice rebound today out of the 30s into the 70s in places like santa rosa. fremont at 68 degrees today. look at your tri-valley readings. 73 in livermore. so this is what you can expect. cold and mostly clear start to the day, by this afternoon full on sunshine, a few high clouds overhead. flirting with records as a result of all of that sunshine coming in so early. then once that sun sets, at 5:53, the temps are going to drop so keep that in mind. if you are headed out on the town for a friday night. remember your seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen shows you there is rain in the near future. we'll talk about that coming up. let's check your drive.

>> looking out on the road northbound 101 at san jose. north of 680, we're holding pretty light here. we talk about friday as we look at the maps. it's a lighter later build for much of the south bay. in general the south bay surface streets with the lighter. northbound 101 slows through the area with the arrow pointing up to 880. that's about it for issues. 87 starting to show volume increase so that will be an issue the next few minutes. peninsula moves with no problems, the entire bay looking good again friday with the later build. here at southbound 880, slowing, 238 through hayward. at the limit across 92. we talk about the fire, scott said the second alarm has been called. this is williams, it's just south of davis, state 112. so davis street moving smoothly, no problems connecting between 580 and 880. we're watching that fire and the people involved. we're looking toward the bay bridge approach. the toll plaza had a fender bender. car hit a bush. no problems for cars though, a

happy that i came out in the long program, i had the highest difficulty in the long program with two triple triple combinations. i'm happy that i did very well in that program and i really showed the judges that i could do everything that i could. >> what's the best part of the olympics so far besides performing on the olympic ice? >> what i've been enjoying is taking my family through the olympic village and getting to see their reaction to everything and it's just been fantastic. >> who are you like really itching to meet and dying to meet and got a picture with? >> well, i was really hoping to meet joe pavelski from the san jose sharks at the olympics and i did before my short program. that was exciting. so i'm really happy i checked that off my list. >> anything you want to say to the bay area and fans at home? >> i want to say thank you so much for your support and belief in me and i'm just so happy that

>> thank you much. let's check in with christina. >> you know she's going to be 19. that's a good age for the next olympics. >> and we'll be rooting for her all the more now that we know about her, right. she was an unknown for a lot of us in the bay area until this olympics. 6:17 now. let's take you out and show you what is known and that is it's a cold morning because it's mostly clear. but things are going to change. about five days of temperatures above average, and then we get about five days of potentially heavy rainfall. everything works out. as you know we need it badly this time. as we head throughout day, temperatures are going to climb. you are missing the beautiful warmth that we enjoyed over january it comes back for five days. 66 at 4:00 in san rafael. beautiful sunrise there, beautiful sunrise in san francisco. 65 degrees there later on today. 69 in the north bay and 70 degrees in beautiful san jose. i want to show you the temperature trend. via the peninsula.

remember, if you're looking for your temperature trend for your region it's here at the bottom of the screen. every zone across the bay area. we got you covered. we're going to be above average to the tune of 10 degrees. as we get into monday, we keep that climb consistently coming a all the way through the beginning of next week. the changes move in. we're talking about a lot of rainfall coming into the bay area. as you know, last time we had that flooding, the heaviest rainfall came through the north bay. look at this. the first front is actually going to hit us vertically. so we set this in motion for you and show you what we expect. you can see here, the whole bay area in that yellow range, that's moderate rainfall on the way. after the first one comes through we've got two more on its heels by sunday at 6:00 p.m. another potent storm system moving in. so i know we got to get through this warmer weekend first. this is next weekend. yeah, might be easier to plan accordingly if you know it's sunny and warm this weekend and showers and snowfall on the way next weekend. i'm going to have your full forecast, tell you what's happening around the bay area, coming up in a few moments.

first let's see how mike is doing. it's friday, doing all right? >> i'm doing fine now but a few hours from now i'll be doing really well. getting that exit door. love work but weekends are nice too. these folks have to wait. the metering lights turned on about 6:10. the fast track lanes have filled in. friday shows a lighter build so we see movement in pretty much all of the lanes. you do have the metering lights to make sure the span moves smoothly. the east shore freeway visible. no problems for cloud cover or visibility. the map shows you how things shape up around the area. the maze moves. just that gentle build by the east shore freeway and the berkeley curve. west 37 a slowdown toward san rafael. there is the commute direction toward the golden gate bridge. a live look shows you how things are shaping up. a glow to the lights but not a concern. you can see the hills on the marin side. you can't see the sky that much. low clouds drifting through. those will move as the traffic moves into the city itself.

the map shows the rest of the bay looking south of the golden gate bridge. easy flow down the peninsula, 101 and 280 and the south bay, the northbound slowing here capital expressway, another little blip. 87 showing slowing, then calms down. we expect to build here and 85. the schools are off this week. so we'll see a light friday expected for most of the freeways as well. we're looking at the westbound direction for 580 and slowing in toward the dublin interchange. 84 through the livermore valley not a major problem. a look at 880 through fremont, the live look shows you we're getting a build for the volume southbound past the truck scales and heading toward milpitas and mission boulevard. tonight, tomorrow night mission boulevard is close from midnight to 5 or 6 the next morning because of work. they are working on it. back to you. >> 6:20. still ahead on "today in the bay," signs of braille for blind shoppers. coming up we're going to introduce you to the 10-year-old

6:23. a fix is on the way for a dangerous stretch of roadway on the peninsula. some residents say ralston avenue between 101 and 92 is not safe for pedestrians and too crowded for cyclists and daunting for drivers. more than 700 people signed a petition asking the city council to make it safer. now the city is paying a consulting firm to come up with a solution. some of the recommendation include adding a round about, lane reductions and new traffic signals. >> a bay area girl scout found an interesting location to sell cookies. the 13-year-old girl scout set up shop right in front of a medical marijuana dispensary in san francisco's excelsior neighborhood. the green cross dispensary posted the photo. she sold out of cookies in 45 minutes. both the girl scouts of northern california and the girl's mother say they have no problem with her selling cookies in front of the pot shop.

in fact, she may be there again on saturday. >> 6:24. a bay area whole foods store doing something unique, making it easier for some of its customers to shop. >> christie smith is in fremont. a 10-year-old boy spurring on this major change. >> reporter: yes, that's right. good morning to you. it's amazing what a little kid can do when they put their mind to it. a 10-year-old boy born blind has been working tirelessly to get braille into store shelves to make it easier for everyone to shop, and this whole foods store here, they are on board. later we'll have a chance to meet this kid. joshua goldenberg will be here later to celebrate his accomplishment. he and his friends from the california school for the blind will also be here having a scavenger hunt using these new braille labels. joshua was born blind. when he was 6 he learned the reading that he was learning didn't apply to helping his family pick things out at the grocery store.

he and his parents started the joshua foundation to put braille in stores one market at a time. >> to him he's no different than anybody else. and so, why is the world different when it comes to him? that's what he's trying to figure out. that's what we're going to try to change one step at a time. you know. for him, for everybody. >> reporter: that interview was from a while ago. the story is the same. his mom says when she heard of visually impaired people waiting 20 minutes for an assistant to help she figured her fiercely independent son wouldn't go for that so that's when they started to come up with the label idea. started this in southern california and it is spreading, the family says that they thought they would get resistance from stores but turns out that a lot of stores are really welcoming the idea. reporting live in fremont, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> neat. >> really is. 6:26. still ahead gold on the slopes for a lake tahoe skier.

medal champion in the debut of free skiing half-pipe event. pretty remarkable to watch. janelle wang live on the plaza. you spoke to maddie this morning. >> reporter: i know, i did. i'm so happy for this young lady. she has worked so hard for this moment. and lake tahoe area free skiers dominate in this sport which made its olympic debut, it's basically what shaun white does in the half-pipe but on skis as you remember, david wise from reno won on tuesday, today it's maddie bowman. she gets her gold medal in a couple of hours. i spoke to her one on one. >> it was so real last night. i woke up this morning like did that really happen? >> you've always been very consistent on the half-pipe. i have never seen you flub at all. you just rock it. how do you stay so focused and so consistent? >> thanks. i don't know. i just you know, try to go out there and if i do it right i won't fall down.

story. 64 degrees at lunch time. 4:00 p.m., 63 degrees. and warm daytime highs. i love bringing you the 70s. 70 degrees in the south bay, peninsula at 69, 73 in the east bay for today. and 65 degrees in san francisco. you'll hit about 69 degrees out in the north bay. comfortable conditions and a beautiful sunrise to go around. into this weekend we keep the warm-up going. south bay tomorrow at 72 degrees for your saturday. as we head through sunday, temperatures comfortable. lots of sunshine all weekend long. great weekend to check out the tall lady washington. we have a pirate ship in town. it was in san francisco, now it's in oakland. it's free to hop on board and yes, they have people in period theme costumes so really cool. 64 degrees, the free tour starts at 4:00 p.m. you want to get there early to get a spot on the lovely lady washington. and yeah, it was featured in the pirates of the caribbean with johnny depp.

he touched that boat. pretty cool stuff. throughout the remainder of the weekend, staying nice and warm, then things change as of tuesday. the atmospheric river comes back in the picture. we're talking about a lot of moisture bull's eyeing the bay area. starting wednesday, hopefully measuring the rain in inches here and the snow looks like right now about six feet, could be more. here's mike inouye with your morning drive. >> six feet is good enough for a base. we'll have folks heading to sierras, 580 slow through livermore about 2:00 today. to the south bay, a smooth flow. the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights turned on. being a friday we see things start to eek off now over in the lanes between the fast track and the hov lanes, so the cash lanes you see the short line, those are off to the right as you approach. coming off the berkeley curve, still packed in. for the rest of the bay, an easy flow for the drive down the east shore freeway, you're in the speed limit area. west of 80 coming from richmond

down to berkeley. slowing again around the berkeley curve. 24 and 580 not a problem. there is your entire view of the bay. a later build and a lighter flow for traffic so we'll check a couple of slower spots. southbound 880 at san lorenzo, down into union city and fremont. not a big concern. in the 50 miles per hour range. a smooth flow over to the tri-valley, west 580 as well as 84 approaching sunol. 680 at the limit as you travel through pleasanton and sunol no. problems toward fremont and the south bay. traffic flows in the northbound direction, 101, a little more slowing because of the volume building from capital expressway to san jose international airport. a car cleared from the road 101 merge around guadeloupe parkway. 87 shows slowing there as well. live look at palo alto, 101 the tropical starting to build up a little bit. obviously not a concern. space for everybody traveling past university avenue. continuing up to san mateo and

at 6:43. was it self defense or murder? the man behind the sixth homicide of the year says he pulled out a gun because he had to. the man told police two people tried to break into his home on pine ridge way near clayton road last night, and opened fire. that's where bob redell joins us live. we understand that you learned new information about the homeowner. >> reporter: we did speak to a neighbor who has known the man here for about 15 years. the homeowner is an army combat veteran, possibly having served in vietnam. he encountered gun fire again last night, this time from an intruder who was trying to make his way into his home where earlier this morning for several hours police had been processing the scene, bringing out evidence in brown paper bags. including a long object, that was wrapped in a paper bag. couldn't tell what it was. would not say if it was a rifle. what is remarkable is that this homeowner was not hurt considering what happened.

around 8:00 last night this man broke into his home and started firing several shots at the homeowner. missing him. the homeowner grabbed his gun, fired back hitting the intruder at least once. the wounded man hopped into a car with another person, sped off. his accomplice drops him off at a hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead. the accomplice his whereabouts unknown. the homeowner did call 911 and by all appearances is cooperating with police. p.d. does tell us that this being the eighth homicide in the city of san jose for the year for 2014, was an act of self defense. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. new this morning fire investigators sifting through what's left of a san leandro home. the home on the corner of williams and alvarado street went up in flames before 4:00 this morning. it took dozens ever firefighters about 30 minutes to put out the flames.

continuing to build north of 680 and 880 toward the airport. that's bay shore freeway. 87 shows speeds coming down toward 50 miles per hour. 85 just starts to show that build as well so. we have a morning commute. it's lighter than we've seen the last few days and friday being what it is, we expect it to continue. a smooth drive as well over along the peninsula drive across the san mateo and the dumbarton bridges. we'll get you a look over at that foster stid approach off of san mateo bridge. a smooth stream of lights in of flat section, look at that, i wanted an excuse to show part of the sunritz. we're looking to the map again. we look toward the orange and yellow. sun rise colors southbound 880 from 238 in toward fremont. hayward show as slowdown typical. nothing dramatic. again it's friday so a lighter build here as well as the trivalley. 84, a fender bender, sounds like it's out of the road. that's good news.

agreeing to relinquish power after the peace bartering deal. this is a result of an international amount of pressure. the emergency session was held last night with foreign ministers from russia, germany, france, poland and critical to success it included opposition leaders in the meeting. the talks lasted all night, they ended about 7:30 this morning you crane time, described as extremely difficult. the president announced a coalition government will be formed that does include opposition forces. he also agreed to hold a new presidential election. after that announcement fighting broke out not in the streetsability in ukraine's parliament. shirts rips, glasses thrown, punches across the session. the fighting broke out after the speaker announced there would be a delay on how to reduce yanukovych's power. the chamber erupted collapsing in chaos as everybody hit that in the center.

let's take you back now live to the opposition camp that is still holding strong in the center of kiev. it's packed. they are going to stay there for the time being as the deal is not signed. it's reported they are feeling victorious but will wait for the signature. also back to the brawl in parliament there, it's not an unusual occurrence in ukraine for the lawmakers to throw punches as if it was a bar. in january there was a fist fight over budget constraints, last year a brawl took place over the use of russian language in their country. so we would never see that here, hopefully. but there it's not uncommon. back to you. >> thank you, peggy. it's 6:52. four people are dead and a woman in jail this morning accused of a shooting rampage at a native american tribal headquarters where she was once a leader. investigators say sherry roads a past leader with the tribe opened fire at the office yesterday as members met to talk about evicting rhodes and her

son. they said rhodes shot five people and stabbed another when she ran out of bullets. four of the victims died, two others in critical condition. rhodes was taken into custody outside that office. >> officials want you to keep eyes open for a violent fugitive spotted in cities around the bay area. it's kevin briggs, wanted in bozeman, montana on attempted rape and for attacking a police officer. he was arrested earlier this month but escaped from custody the same day. he's a convicted felon and registered sex offender, investigators consider him armed and dangerous. the fbi says briggs was spotted in oakland, berkeley and san francisco last week. they think he could be headed through the state in either direction. >> today drought stricken farmers could at least get relief from the federal government. federal government will announce how much water it plans to give
