7:02 am
>> thank you very much, rob. we've got new video in this morning where you can see repairs are definitely under way in concord. b.a.r.t. trains being lifted high into the air at the location of the derailment yesterday. crews have been busy working on repairs overnight which b.a.r.t. officials say could be finished by tonight. but trains into and out of concord are still at a standstill following that derailment forces riders onto buses instead. according to b.a.r.t. an out-of-service train with no passengers on board was headed to the concord yard last night around 6:30 when its wheels left the track as it crossed over a switching station. luckily the train operator was not injured. commuters, though, were feeling the pain almost immediately as it took a while for b.a.r.t. officials to get that bus bridge up and running. >> the train derailed. make other arrangements to get home and i'm tired. i work in the city. i'm tired and i want to go home. >> when we got off they said there would be two buses taking us to concord and then to north
7:03 am
concord and turn around and coming back. been waiting here 45 minutes and not one bus. >> that's a tough start to the weekend. buses and shuttles will take passengers from pittsburg to concord and the pleasant hill station until those tracks are repaired. there was a derailment in march of 2011 outside the concord station near the switching tracks as well and some people believe it is the same location as last night's derailment, however, b.a.r.t. has not confirmed that. it is a sound neighbors in the foothills near east san jose state still frightens them, a series of gunshots one followed by then three more. police say a man reported someone was prowling around the front of his home on pine ridge way thursday night when he got his gun and shot and killed the man he says in self-defense. it is san jose's eighth homicide of the year. so far no one has been arrested. neighbors say their street for decades has been a safe place to live, a place where kids can run around and play, but they say not the case anymore. >> it's kind of hard knowing that you can't just be in front
7:04 am
of your own house and then you can't just sit right here and talk to your own family members without being con, of something. >> san jose police tell nbc bay area out of the eight homicides in 2014 three of them have happened on the east side of town. since february 10th, 11 days ago, we've had six other inls dents of crime, two of those assaults and one of them an attempted felony sex crime. it was a tense day near the san jose state campus last night. a man carrying a knife was shot and killed there. two campus police officers opened fire after the man allegedly refused to drop that weapon and after a taser had no effect. it is believed to be the first time university officers have ever fired a gun at someone. school was not put on lockdown. police have not yet released any details about the suspect's name or why he was allegedly wielding a knife. crews worked late into the night repairing a broken water main in berkeley that flooded streets and threatened to flood
7:05 am
homes as well. the break happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon near the intersection of california and parker streets. less than a mile from campus. an east bay mudd spokeswoman said around 35 customers on parker street lost water service because of that break but that wasn't the residents' only concern. >> it's worrisome, i don't know how it's going to affect our water. >> you know, we're in a water crisis. >> yeah, we're in a drought. even though it's kind ruining our drought, it's fun to play in. >> crews say the location of the break made it very difficult to access. it took two hours before they were able to stop the flow of the water. the cause of the break is not yet known. family members are intensifying their search this weekend for a missing man from san mateo. 36-year-old brian butler was seen around 5:00 last sunday in montara. his truck was found south of devil's slide tunnel the next morning. friends say he's an avid hiker
7:06 am
and they tell us he's been experiencing depression lately and they think he went on a hike to clear his head. however, they say it's odd that he's not been in contact with anyone since he left. >> my husband every day since i've known brian he gets in the car and the first thing he does is put his headset in and calls brian and they talk about their day every single day. since i've known him for eight years so, yeah, not usual at all. not usual for him to leave his cell phone at home. >> the couple came up from l.a. to help. they will be joining the search team tomorrow at moss beach. the chp is warning drivers in the north bay to be on the lookout because someone is shattering windshields with water bottles. the chp says five cars have been hit in just the last week. this is a truck -- a photo of a truck believed to be connected to those attacks. it's described as a 2012 to 2014 white toyota tacoma pickup truck. it has a black after-market rims and an off-road package. in each case officers say the suspects threw the water bottles

7:08 am
and ended a 62-year drought for that event for team usa. but cunningham has another opportunity this weekend in the four-man sled and unlike in vancouver where he was the brake man he now moves to the front as the driver and he is driving for gold. nick cunningham's desire to bobsled came later in life not earlier. after college. >> it was almost like a graduation gift for myself, i'm just going to tryout and see, you know, do something new something that i've never -- i've never been in the snow really. let's do. in >> reporter: 18 months later he's at the vancouver olympics. he didn't medal there but he's hoping with more experience and knowledge sochi will be different. >> 45% speed, 45% intensity, like, power and everything. and the rest just crazy. you got to be a little nuts. >> reporter: he calls it controlled chaos that's really uncomfortable. no padding, no seat belts, racing 90 miles per hour down an
7:09 am
icy track. >> if you look at my helmet, it has paint down the sides of it from my head smacking the side. and they are cutting cut up and bloodied. it's a very intense ride. >> reporter: only one thing is scarier, riding a bull. this beach boy turned into a cowboy after transferring to boise state for college and when he's not riding bulls or sleds, he's a construction engineer with the national guard. but right now, the focus is on the olympics. the focus to win. >> i'm going to say this for the very first time, i'm a medal contender, a medal threat. >> reporter: the bobsled team has a motto, p-2-p, prepare to podium. coming up i speak one-on-one with the newest gold medalist for team usa, she's the youngest skier to win a gold medal in

good morning to you. looking live at the embarcadero this morning, we can see clear all the way out in the distance because there's not a lot of fog this morning. that could change for tomorrow. not a lot of fog in the south bay either. san jose looking pretty as a postcard as well. many of us do it, if you use your card at the gas station, you check your bank statement. investigators have busted credit card skimming rings and there could be thousands of victims. jean elle has the details. >> there are thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people who are potential victims.

>> reporter: santa clara county district attorney investigators say thieves from southern california put credit card skimmers at dozens of bay area gas pumps. with every swipe of a card the team was stealing financial and personal information. then making fake credit cards and driver's licenses for spending sprees. >> these are very, very good quality fakes. >> reporter: the d.a.'s rapid enforcement allied computer team arrested six suspects and removed the skimmers. while they focus on busting these rings, state senator jerry hill is working to make skimming obsolete. >> it makes it mandatory in california. >> reporter: hill introduced legislation requiring credit card issuers and retailers to switch from magnetic strips to computer chip credit card technology by october 2015. a chip linked to a p.i.n. number would lock skimmers out. >> the chip will prevent that because there's no longer the magnetic strip that has all of that information that can easily
7:14 am
be pulled off of it and then put onto another card. >> reporter: hill says in europe where chip technology is widely used fraud rates are dropping. >> the chip in the card is the best way to go about it. >> reporter: consumers in the bay area are looking forward to a new, more secure way to pay at the pump. >> senator hill says lawmakers in washington are also trying to make chip-based credit card mandatory nationwide in 2015. he says that if the plan hits delays or is derailed, his legislation will keep california on track for a change at the pump. one person in california has died and three newborns have become ill in a listeria outbreak. seven additional illnesses were reported in maryland. all of the maryland victims reported eating soft or semisoft hispanic-style cheese. less listeria was linked to the

7:20 am
40s and a few lower 50s as you ged up into the hills with the warmer air sitting up top the colder air at sea level giving you the hawzzy skies in the south bay. the radar is dry for now and should stay that way through midday tuesday and then the storm track is going to start to dip to the south as we head through the middle part of next week. in the meantime today what we'll have will be some of the high clouds coming in. during the afternoon at times, enough to filter out the sun a little bit. just partly cloudy skies. moving through the afternoon and then eventually we'll see some low clouds coming in as the sea breeze picks up a little bit later on today and tonight. that may push some low clouds inland for tomorrow morning but other than that coastal mist we're not expecting any rain in the forecast for the weekend as the temperatures will be soaring again into the 60s and 70s. here's the culprit for the warm weekend. high pressure blocking off the storms for now. but this is subject to change as we go through the first half of the week. the high is going to move on off towards the east. a trough of low pressure forms on the west coast.
7:21 am
this shgoing to usher in a series of storms. the first one coming in on wednesday, tuesday night around midnight through wednesday morning and then another one to follow for friday and saturday and it's that friday system you'll want to watch out for, with the area of low pressure, 992 millibars, that would set up winds maybe in the 30 to 40-mile-per-hour range in the bay area as we kick off next weekend. the expectations in terms of the timing for the incoming systems, the first wave coming in notice next week, this will be tuesday night into wednesday mainly impacting the heavier rain for the north bay but friday's system is going to pack a punch statewide, you've not seen a system like that in a while that hits the central coast and eventually moves into southern california, too, kicking off next weekend. saturday into sunday, more scattered showers. possibly looking at some heavier rain as we head into next friday. but today highs in the 60s and low 70s could break records if we manage low to mid-70s in the south bay. numbers in san jose close to 72. 73 yesterday. right in that range for this afternoon. the peninsula looking at highs
7:22 am
in the upper 60s to near 70. san francisco also looking pretty warm. notice the north bay you'll see highs in the upper 60s to low 70s today and around the tri-valley numbers in the 60s and 70s and clearly seven-day forecast showing you the warmest and driest days of the week happening right now. and then starting wednesday, thursday, into friday we'll see those opportunities for seeing some rain. so, your traveler's forecast head to the high country pretty nice. lots of spring-like temperatures for saturday and sunday. 50s and skips around lake tahoe and for reno and notice san luis obispo mid-70s in the forecast. gorgeous for the weekend and much-needed rain and sierra snow coming back as early as tuesday night. kris? >> all right, thank you very much, rob. a dozen new homes built by habitat for humanity volunteers in the east bay will be dedicated this morning. among the volunteers were former president jimmy carter and first lady rosalynn carter. the former first couple helped to build the 12-unit housing complex in oakland last october. country star garth brooks and
7:23 am

7:26 am
72 years into their wonderful marriage. here's "today in the bay's" garvin thompson. >> reporter: before moving into the retirement community in antioch last month, bob and myra graves got rid of most of their stuff, except a few family photos like this one. the first of themselves taken as a couple taken a few months after they eloped to reno in 1942 just before bob went off to war. to call that wedding a simple affair would be generous. no flowers. no cake. no photographer. >> nothing. we just stood in front of a judge. here's over here, we're over here. and i think the secretary come in to be a witness or something. >> reporter: and for bob and myra was just fine at the time and 72 years of loving marriage later, still is. >> we never fought back on that at all. never. >> never. >> reporter: which makes what happened this past friday all the more special.

called sochi park. it is this country's version of disneyland but it's much smaller and it is still under construction. it is russia's only theme park so obviously it will be very popular. it has a soft opening right now. the only ride, though, that you can ride is the carousel. however, there are some monster roller coasters that are going up as well. and the entire park is based on russian stories and fairy tales. organizers are hoping to ride the olympic momentum for their grand opening coming up this summer. they are giving -- they are expecting about 2 million visitors a year. there's also a hotel right next door which looks like a castle. it was built in about nine months and is one of the nicest hotels in country. still ahead on today in the bay, it is a game of he said/he said. the reports that the 49ers are denying that is causing a stir in santa clara.

good morning to you. looking live at emeryville. a perfect day to get out and enjoy your bicycle or walk the dog. same story in san francisco. alcatraz, a good day to play tourist, the weather is going to be beautiful. some high drama yesterday over at 49ers headquarters in santa clara which started with a report that the cleveland browns had a trade in place to get 49ers head coach jim harbaugh in exchange for draft picks. the move obviously never took place last month but was reported by pro football talk which claims that the deal was agreed upon only to be nixed by harbaugh's wife. jed york highly denies that report on twitter writing is this on the record? report isn't true. and jim harbaugh himself responded late last night saying, quote, for the record i echo jed york's comment, isn't true. i know nothing about a trade with the cleveland browns and us

[ mom ] hi, we're the pearsons, and we love chex cereal.

so we made our own commercial to tell you why.

first, chex makes lots of gluten free flavors. which is a huge thing for us. and there's seven to choose from. like cinnamon, honey nut, and chocolate. i tell them "you guys are gonna turn into chocolate chex!" i like cinnamon, greg is a honey nut nut. when you find something this good, you want to spread the word. [ all ] we're the pearsons, and we love chex! good saturday morning to you. we're waking up to mostly sunny skies in sunnyvale. a little bit of haze around the east bay this morning. patchy low clouds in a few locations and in san jose you'll notice we've got the thin layer of halze outside. warmer air in the hills setting up the temperature inversion which when you have high pressure build over the bay area and you get light winds, in the winter you could have air quality problems. today not too bad for the north bay and peninsula, air quality

levels moderate for smoke pollution, and east bay and south bay not looking too bad as we go through the afternoon. right now the radar is quite dry, that is subject to change, though, midway through next week. storm track nowhere to be found right now. the high clouds coming in from the west at times filter out the sun a little bit as we move into the afternoon. a little bit of patchy low cloud cover but as we head through the afternoon mostly sunny and a few passing high clouds heading through the evening and more on the way of the low clouds tomorrow morning as the onshore winds increase a little bit as you wrap up the weekend. but in terms of the rain that's going to start to set up as we head towards next week. high pressure will start to break down. the same ridge right now that could bring us some records today for warm temperatures. this is the weekend pattern right now, but notice what happens by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday. the high scoots off to the east. trough sets up here in the west. this is going to open the door for a series of weather systems. first one coming in tuesday night into wednesday. mainly for the north bay and then that friday and saturday system will pack more wind and plenty of rain we suspect as we

get through the end of the week. the timing here first half of the week looks dry. notice what happens tuesday night and we'd the first event impacting most of the north bay. in terms of the heavier rain totals, weaker system moving through san jose, but the friday/saturday system will pack a lot more rain and more likely more wind. we'll probably see winds 30 miles per hour with that system as it slams through early by friday and next weekend skies begin to clear and scattered showers and much cooler weather, too. you can see that towards the end of the seven-day forecast. nothing cool about our temperatures. we're in the upper 60s to low fills again in the south bay and peninsula temperatures looks nice with 60s and 70 toward san francisco early in the afternoon before the sea breeze increases toward the evening and the tri-valley temperatures the warmest we'll likely have over the next seven days and the same for the east bay with upper 60s and low 70s today. easy travel day towards the sierra, 60 in reno and 50s around lake tahoe and mild temperatures and sunshine for the weekend but much-needed
