train was leaving the b.a.r.t. station about 6:30 last night. chase cane live in concord. how is the work coming along? >> reporter: terry, it's coming along much quicker than they expected. he hope trains will be moving on these tracks by 8:00 tomorrow morning. they have workers up here on the track, behind me right now. they've been moving back and forth along these rails. it is getting dark. but ha they're focusing on are the two straight tracks, just trying to get those rails fixed, so they can get these trains rolling again. crews worked all night getting cars off the tracks near the concord station. and that same work continued well into the afternoon until the last car was off this stretch of mangled track. >> i would call the damage significant. it is something that's going to take some time to get repaired. >> reporter: that news did concern those who depend on b.a.r.t. the riders having to take

shuttle buses between stations all day. a chore they do not want to repeat tomorrow. >> i hope so. i hope it gets fixed immediately. because i work all the time. that's my main trmgs. >> reporter: with the tracks clear and work under wa i to repair the damaged rail, b.a.r.t. officials seem confident they'll be moving by morning. but much longer before they know exactly what went wrong. >> while there's track damage, the cars are also damaged. it's a chicken or egg type of situation. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. spokesperson says that there is an investigation under way to figure out what went wrong here. but he does not think that the driver had anything to do with it. he said the driver was going at an appropriate speed and taking the train out of service. but because this is very close to the same spot that a train derailed just three years ago, they're going to take a very close look at what happened on

these tracks just last night. live tonight in concord, nbc bay area news. thank you for the update, chase. that is the sound of protesters in ukraine today celebrating the news that parliament voted to impeach viktor yanukovych. he signed an agreement with opposition leaders for early elections and reforms. the police quickly joined the opposition and the army refused to back the president. parliament also ordered the release of his main rival who spent the last two years in prison. she arrived at independence square to a heroes welcome. recent violence there killed more than 70 people. hundreds of people in the bay area support the anti-government movement in ukraine. they called on the international community to make sure there's a peaceful resolution during this transition. >> this is not over. we need to maintain vigilance,

make sure that ukraine has free and fair elections in the next couple months. i believe they're scheduled for may of this year. and we need to make sure that the security of all people in ukraine is accepted. >> the ukrainian community in the bay area has raised thousands of dollars to purchase tents, gasoline and boots for protesters in ukraine. students want the world to pay attention to venezuela, where protested have erupted and eight people have been killed, more than 100 injured. kimberly tere has more on that. >> reporter: terry, we spoke with some students tonight who are planning a protest for tomorrow. it's going to be at the golden gate bridge at noon and they're hoping to get enough people there to form a human chain across the pedestrian bridge there. and in doing so, call attention to the violence in venezuela. for the last two weeks, protesters have been holding

marches, set fire in the streets, and have been clashing with police. a demonstration is against shortage also of basic goods, high inflation and high crime levels across that country. they say this has been going on for years and they want to see a change. the uc berkeley students say they've been on their phones and computers almost nonstop trying to get information on what is happening in venezuela and whether their families and friends are safe. >> we just want a big change. i think people are on the right track to that. but we need the international attention, too. >> reporter: in particular, these students want the united nations and political leaders to step in here. they say anyone interested in the cause is welcome to join them for that demonstration tomorrow at the golden gate bridge. tonight at 11:30, after the olympics, we'll hear more from the students including how their own families in venezuela are directly being impacted by the violence there. live in berkeley, kimberly tere,

nbc bay area news. this just in. a warning for dog owners in san francisco, more poisoned food has been found in the twin peaks neighborhood. these are the poisoned meatballs that animal control officers found last summer that killed at least one dog. today officials say they found 21 more meatballs laced with poison. most were found near crestline drive and park ridge drive. officers posted dozens of signs to alert pet owners there. they have not heard of any pets sickened or killed by the meatballs this time. team usa has been struggling in the last few days in hockey. the women's hockey team lost to canada in overtime on thursday. the men's team couldn't score a goal against canada yesterday. >> the knockout blow came today. this time it wasn't canada. jack doles standing by in sochi with the latest on usa hockey and other events. jack? >> reporter: yeah, head scratcher for usa hockey. they came here with aspirations,

realistic aspirations of winning a gold medal, but they leave wondering what went wrong, and how it happened so quickly. team usa will leave sochi without a souvenir. one day after being shut out by canada. the men's hockey team failed to score against finland in the bronze medal game, losing 5-0. >> disappointment. that sums it up the best. >> tough to come home without any hardware. proud of the way the guys played. >> reporter: the americans had their chances. including two penalty shots. but misfired when it mattered most. players will now return to their day jobs in the nhl starting tuesday. one last run for glory in the mountains. norway, the most decorated woman in history. cross-country 30 k. the gold was her tenth overall medal and her teammates swept

silver and bronze for good measure. >> russia finally has the gold! >> reporter: team russia coming out on time in the biathlon relay. the americans finished 16th. as the games wind down, there are only a couple sports on the schedule for tomorrow. including the bronze medal bobsled duo of steven holcomb and steve langdon to compete in the four-man finals. hockey is the other big gold medal up for grabs. canada against sweden. these are the last two teams to win the gold medal. >> jack, thanks very much. an olympic spoiler alert. we'll show you the medal count right now. so if you don't want to know, this is the time to turn away from the tv. when the music ends, it is very safe to look back.

you need to update your smartphones and tablets. the cupertino tech giant said they have a flaw that makes them vulnerable to hackers. they can use wi-fi at coffee shops or other places to see your e-mails, and other information like credit card nushs. they have updates to fix the problem. the app that made the headlines for the 19 billion valuation is having troubles this weekend. the app provides text messaging services to more than 350 million people around the world. the service went down this morning. it took the company hours to fix the servers. last night they had a short outage as well. they report that the service has gone down at least once a month for several months. some speculating it's more people checking it out because of the facebook purchase. california's drought is not just affecting farmers. it's now affecting people who fish.

the state has banned all fishing on a section of the american river near fullsome to protect the fish populations. there isn't enough water for them to migrate and spawn. complete with signs up and down the river, as some fishermen saw the signs and turned around. but not everyone is playing by the rules. >> we were next to a couple, we saw them, there was a big fish that they had caught. >> i think it's irresponsible to fish when they've been asked not to. yet they're standing there fishing. >> catching any fish in the restricted areas is a misdemeanor and comes with a fine of up to $1,000. coming up next, thousands of workers at university of california college campuses across california say enough is enough. and will hit the picket lines. why employees have agreed to strike. clouds and mist on the santa cruz mountains right now. storms will pack sierra snow, and gusty winds at times in the

i'm hopeful that most people were able to get out today, because it was spectacular outside. >> it won't do you much good to go out later this week unless you bring your umbrella. >> you'll want to dust that off by wednesday. right now, though, it's been kind of a finish to a summer-like day around the bay area. 70s earlier today. now the sea breeze has fired up. we continue to see low clouds spilling into san francisco pushed in by the strong sea breeze. west wind at 21 miles per hour. low clouds and misty skies tonight. winds now strongly onshore.

this is a change from earlier today. we had a slight offshore breeze, temperatures in the east bay and south bay valleys climb into the low 70s. the ocean air conditioning is certainly turned on. we should see sunshine sunday and monday. looking dry for the bay area. bigger changes coming our way. what you're seeing in the santa cruz mountains is mist from the low clouds, big push inland. the real rain-producing clouds stay off to the north. high pressure is continuing to keep things dry. storm track staying well north of the bay area. this is subject to change. by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday we'll really start to see things begin to change for the bay area. the high begins to break down. it's going to slide on off to the east. the changes we're likely to see as the high moves on, that will open up the jet stream to dive right into california, giving us a few days of rain. fast-moving system with breaks in between. one coming in on wednesday, and a very windy and wet system coming in for friday.

the rain potential we're looking at, this is toward the middle part of next week. wednesday, rain event that should bring about an inch of rain for the north bay, and less than a rt quaer inch for the south bay. you can see it clearly here, look what happens here on friday. now you're seeing a bull's-eye for the rain across the south bay, down the central coast. this will bring three to five inches of rain on the coastal range near the santa cruz mountains. san jose, the system goes on by. we'll finally get good rainfall totals around the south bay, we expect. the wednesday system bringing in most of the rain for the north bay. the friday system goes on through, the bay picking up one to two inches of rain. closer to three around santa rosa. and maybe five in the santa cruz mountains. good news for the rainfall department but the friday system as we go through the work. no worries about rain tomorrow, just fog and misty skies. partly cloudy skies for the afternoon. upper 60s in san jose. for the north bay, we'll see the

thousands of people who work for the university of california are planning to strike next month. more than 21,000 employees throughout the system are expected to go on strike from march 3rd through march 7th. about 8,300 of the employees are service workers who want better wan wages and higher staffing. one of the medical centers is in san francisco. the university of california has been negotiating with the unions for more than a year. and school officials argue the strike will only hurt students, patients and the community. google is pulling the plug on its free citywide wi-fi service in mountainview.

they installed it eight years ago, but the network hasn't kept up with the demands for data. google is going to take it down over the next couple months. mountainview city council is considering a plan this week to build a new public wi-fi system for the downtown area. jimmy fallon's first week of the "tonight show" pulled in big ratings. last night with guests justin timberlake, the show had 8.8 million viewers. it capped a week of ratings that haven't been matched since the cheers final in 1993. next week will be the audience retention test. the olympic games played a role in the ratings. thelady, jerry seinfeld, lady gaga, will ferrell and u2, to name a few. let's bring in the man, the man. >> i'm a star, terry?

welcome back to nbc bay area. first reported by the san jose mercu"mercury news," barry bondl begin working for the giants next month as a special instructor for hitters. bonds has a desire to contribute, and the team is openminded about giving him the same invite given to other former giants. we want to hear bruce bochy's take? he told reporters, quote, you understand there will be a lot of attention. it's the first time he's been back since he stopped playing. our goal is to not let that be a distraction, to have his knowledge and to have a guy who is one of the greatest hitters of all-time, it's going to be beneficial to everybody. spring training continues.

scottsdale, arizona, home of the giants. and outfielder hunter pence. >> reporter: a lot of talk about weight. pablo sandoval losing weight, buster posey, gaining weight. there's also talk about hunter pence and his diet and his weight. we learned more about hunter pence and his weight and workout regimen. it was on the paleo diet. but what we found out is he got away from that early in the southe season and the giants told him to do that. >> they wanted me to eat more wheat, more bread. i was missing b vitamins. they wanted me to have more fat. i had to eat unhealthy to be healthy. in moderation, you know. like i said, find the balance, the midpoint, instead of extreme. i looked good, but i wasn't able to withstand, you know, a full day of baseball and lifting. i would start scramping.
