i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check that forecast, good monday morning to you, christina. >> good morning to you. temperatures this morning are nice and comfortable. mostly in the 50s, we are headed towards the 70s. today and tomorrow expected to break records, then the rain moves in. lots to talk about in the full forecast coming up. stick around. if you got to get out the door right now hold up, here is mike inouye. >> we go up and over this high rise on the san mateo bridge westbound is the direction toward 101. we're talking about an incident around the area, northbound 101 at third in san mateo north of this bridge. we had a crash. car went into a light pole. sounds like the off ramp has a lane blocked. we look toward palo alto, 101 southbound with the headlights going past willow toward university, the southbound side had a bit of activity down fort holly street. an earlier crash leaves a car on the shoulder.

no major injuries. you see the light volume. we'll track that, a lot of activity for the peninsula this early. toward the east bay, west 580 at dublin approaching el charo, a smooth flow. a lot of cars but this is typical, a smooth flow at the limit toward the dublin interchange. >> mike, thanks. new details on an accident involving an amtrak train and a car in fremont. the crash happened late last night on duster berry way when firefighters arrived on scene one person was out of the car but the other was trapped inside unconscious. firefighters were able to get the person out. both taken to the hospital with major injuries. we have not been told if there were passengers on the train or why the car was on the tracks. >> people plan to protest during the dalai lama visit today. protesters are using the opportunity to bring attention to the persecution of exiled tibetan citizens. the dalai lama street talk about

business, ethics and compassion on the last leg of his bay area tour. >> this is an outrage. the dalai lama has an opinion, he is free to teach anything he wants. once that opinion is imposed on other people it becomes discrimination. that's why we're protesting. >> if you let many for life, then 100% sure go to heaven. >> over two days thousands of people turned out to hear him talk in san francisco and in berkeley. he will head to southern california after today. >> a berkeley firefighter died when he was crushed by a tractser in rural contra costa county. fellow firefighters stood with hands over their hearts as the vehicle carrying the body of the fallen comrade sped past.

the vehicle rolled 200 feet. emergency responders found him pinned under a piece of the tractor and declared him dead at the scene. >> police in concord are looking for three men who forced their way into a home and tied up a woman and her grandson. it happened near highlands park not far from clayton. at least two of the men had guns when they pushed their way into the home bat 3:00 yesterday afternoon. a senator happens to live next door. the woman and her grandson escaped and ran to his house for help. >> she was out front, shaken, he was of course very stressed out as any of us would be after being in the middle of the afternoon in the upper middle income neighborhood, having somebody come into their house with weapons and they were taped up and he was able to get free so he came next door. >> the men got away with a safe and other items from the house. the woman had chest pains and was taken to the hospital as a

precaution. >> the san jose city council will consider a new strategy to get homeless men and women off the streets. it wants to pay to put some of them in local motels and hotels potentially for years. it would cost about $1 million a year. the plan is lease vacant hotel rooms and allow them to stay there while nonprofit agencies help them find jobs and permanent housing. the exact number of people who would receive rooms depends on funding and hotel owners have to be willing to accept that deal. >> after 17 days of competition the olympic games are over. now thousands of people heading to the sochi airport to come on home. today is the heaviest travel day related to the olympics with security wait times up to three hours in sochi. >> and one of the olympic mascots had the honor of blowing out the olympic flame. the sochi bear even shed a

single tear as the festivities came to an end. there it is. wow. the olympic flag was handed over to south korea, they will host the next winter games, 2018. and the entire spectacle ended in style, fireworks lighting the night sky. many on team usa say it was an experience of a lifetime but they are excited to come home to their family and friends. >> it's pretty unbelievable, i think. we had a lot of good memories and good times and i'm really happy about the people i shared it with. >> i'm tired. i clearly have a cold. i'm ready to go home. but i had a blast while i was here and i can't believe it's over. >> i'll be home in a couple days and you know, i can't wait to spend time with everybody and kind of celebrate this. i've been away for so long. it will be fun to celebrate with friends and family. >> polina edmunds has moves on

as rain is on our way. christina loren joins us on this monday morning. >> good morning to you. back to work, kids heading back to school after ski week in the south bay and temperatures are a little on the chilly side this morning. make sure you grab that jacket. 43 in concord. 44 in oakland. san jose at 45 degrees to kick off the work week. temperatures are going to be unseasonably warm for the first couple days of the week. then things change and remember, your seven-day forecast shows you that. always scrolling at the bottom of your screen. clear and cold, sun rise at 6:49 a.m. hazy sunshine, near record temps, crystal clear conditions all the way from sun rise to sun set. it's going to be beautiful out there today if you have the luxury of hitting the beach, comfortable conditions. we'll see high clouds build this evening. but that's going to set up for a gorgeous sunset at 5:56. temperatures today are going to ramp up in the 60s and 70s. we're at 72 in the east bay, 73 right here in the south bay. and 70 degrees in the north bay.

we've got a lot of rain coming this week. we're going to tap back into the atmospheric river. i'll tell you where and when the first showers will arrive in the bay area, that's coming up in my next report. first, let's check your drive for mack to work monday. back to work today, mike. >> right here, present. looking here, look at these out the -- crossing the golden gate bridge. you can see them, they are walking around on the bridge. they physically have to pull the dividers from one lane and put them into the dividers for the other as it moves over and blocks one of the northbound lanes. getting ready for the southbound commute coming into the city. no slowing aside from the crew so watch for flashing lights. move over and clear a lane if you can southbound away from them and toward san francisco. a smooth drive into the city via either bridge. the san mateo bridge, told you about the earlier issue. still activity southbound 101 approaching holly but we don't have slowing. a little from time to time as

folks slow for the flashing lights. the slow lane is blocked approaching 92. into the south bay no problems, actually most of this overnight road work didn't happen from sunday into monday. we have mission boulevard with the closure still over from warm springs to 880, and look at fremont as you come southbound in toward the same area i talked about. light flow with the headlights fast truck scales. it's light this morning. >> this morning b.a.r.t. trains are running in concord after a train derailed friday night and while more work does need to be done to repair the track commuters shouldn't worry about delays this morning. service between the concord and pleasant hills station was restored yesterday. one set of tracks needs to be repaired, that might stop b.a.r.t. from adding extra trains for the commute. the transit agency says riders shouldn't notice difference in service. >> still ahead on "today in the bay," a former stanford basketball player makes professional sports history. >> filling up your tank got more

welcome back everyone. a very good monday morning to you. taking a live look outside. not a lot of traffic yet. folks getting up and about. this is in the north bay. we'll check the morning commute. pretty nice temperatures expected as well. former stanford basketball player jason collins made sports history in l.a. wearing 46, collins became the first openly gay athlete to play in one america's pro major sports leagues. the nets signed collins to a 10-day contract before last night's game. collins came out less than a year ago on the cover of "sports illustrated" but no team signed him until yesterday. the 35-year-old says his only focus is on basketball. >> just be yourself, your true

authentic self. never be afraid or ashamed or have fear to be your true self. >> collins didn't score but recorded two rebounds in ten minutes of play. a change for collins' alma mater. stanford will stop selling tobacco products. including cigarettes, chewing tobacco and ecigarettes. the official says the sales are inconsistent with many programs that support healthy habits and behaviors. no one can smoke on campus unless they are more than 30 feet from school buildings. tobacco sales will stop next month. >> gas prices have jumped 12 cents a gallon in the last two weeks. according to the lundberg survey of service stations t rise in crude oil prices partly to blame for the recent increase, lundberg says the prices rose because of violence in venezuela and south sudan. the national average price per gallon of regular now $3.41, san

francisco 42 cents higher at $3.83. san jose, $3.76 and oakland about $3.74. what what'sapp is back in the headlines. the founder apologizing to users days after it was bought by facebook for $19 billion. for that and the rest of the news before the bell let's turn to morgan brennan at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> good morning, scott. futures are higher as the markets come off a mixed week that saw political unrest in ukraine, negative housing data, big merger deals and a spike in commodity prices. the dow and s&p 500 ending in the red, with the nasdaq did rise for the third straight week. investors may get more data showing the impacts of the harsh winter weather on the economy. we get reports on new and pending home sales, durable goods and consumer confidence and earnings from home depot,

macy's and target. the dow dropped 30 points to 16103, the nasdaq slipping five, 4263. whatsapp co-founder has written a blog post saying she sorry for the outage on the service on saturday. he says a network router is to blame. the company is working to make sure it doesn't happen again. whatsapp based in menlo park has more than 450 million users. and netflix striking a deal with comcast, the parent of nbc universal to get a direct broadband connection. this will give netflix customers faster speeds and could lead to similar deals from other cable providers. scott, back to you. >> morgan, thank you. we'll talk more about the net flex deal coming up. >> let's check in with christina a. gorgeous day yesterday. felt like summer. >> we're going to get another today. tomorrow just about as warm and

the clouds increase and then we're talking about rain for the remainder of the week. into the weekend and the beginning of next week. we desperately need it. mostly in the 40s, we're headed to the 70s later on today. 72 degrees in the east bay, 73 degrees in the south bay. really good looking day shaping up. tomorrow, temperatures about as warm, we drop numbers by a couple degrees. the you upper 60s to low 70s and in the south bay, at about 68 degrees. then things change. we've got temperatures krark on wednesday, and we're talking about a lot of rainfall. let's start with wednesday. we stop the clock on futurecast at 10:00 a.m., showers starting to press into the bay area. the front is going to hit us vertically. this one's going to hit us vertically so once the rain starts in santa rosa it's about the same time for the rainfall to start in places like los gatos. we stop the clock into 9:00 p.m.

wednesday night, the richer moisture comes through, and then i want to kind of take you into thursday to give you an idea of what we are expecting. those showers continue as we head through friday, another storm system comes through, stop that clock for you, into saturday and sunday, more rain on the way. and even monday and tuesday still talking about the storm track far enough to the south to where we are going to be the bull's eye for these storm systems. this is great news. i'll tell you how much we're expecting coming up. now back to you. >> thanks so much. it is 4:49. president obama is meeting with governors from both sides of the aisle hoping to find common ground. during a dinner last night the president told state leaders their cooperation is vital during another meeting later this morning republicans plan to share their ideas for improving the economy and to urge the president to lift some regulatory burdens on business. >> instead of meeting with the president governor brown stayed in california so he could attend this morning's memorial for two chp officers who died responding

to a crash. they expect thousands of people to attend the service in honor of officers brian law and juan gonzalez. last monday the men were heading to the scene of a crash when their cruiser flipped. both men used to live and work in the bay area. law started his career in oakland and gonzalez worked in san jose. >> our coverage of the crisis in ukraine continues, the country's acting interior minister issued an arrest warrant for ousted president viktor yanukovych. shortly after relinquishing his detail he drove away and hasn't been seen since. he and other officials are suspected in mass killings of civilians. he set off a wave of protests when he shelved an agreement with the european union in favor of strengthening ties with russia.

at least 82 died in clashes between protesters and police. doctors in southern california trying to figure out what's causing several children to experience polio-like symptoms. doctors started seeing these symptoms back in 2012, children came in with severe weakness or rapid paralysis in one or more limbs. sometimes after a mild respiratory illness. now they say it isn't polio which in ways makes it more worrisome. a pediatric neurologist has been working with southern california doctors and will present several of the cases at the american academy of neurology's upcoming meeting. >> still ahead, first it was fallon, now his replacement. why seth meyers should feel comfortable hosting the late night show. >> we're giving you a live look at the smooth moving traffic on the bay bridge. you see the flashing lights, didn't they just build that

we were chatting back and forth. they are installing a track and other components for a maintenance elevator. that's why they have to block a lane to have room to work as you approach you are moved to the right. leave them room. there you go. the reason it's okay, the span is okay. it's brand new. across from the oakland side, a smooth flow of traffic. on the approach we have a slower drive developing over to north livermore avenue. a car was blocking the slow lane. as these improve we see the red turning to yellow. a smooth drive now as you head to the dublin interchange and nothing unusual aside from that breakdown we had into livermore, the dublin interchange moves through and 680 no delays. >> thanks, mike. >> 4:56. still ahead "today in the bay" thousands of people in the dark in san francisco including myself. we'll tell you what caused the
