6:00 am
right now a microclimate alert as we give you a live look outside. san jose, dublin and san francisco. early this morning, a powerful storm started to push through the area starting with the south bay where it's packing a wet and windy punch. now we're seeing severe flooding. and water rescues including this driver stranded earlier this morning in san jose. it's a tough start to the friday morning. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. here's what we're talking about. new video shot overnight in san jose. you have wind blowing, whipping flags around, rain soaking the streets but as the morning has gone on, things have gotten worse. they have gotten dangerous. this's waist high water on 87 in san jose. tow trucks are working overtime trying to handle this. we have live coverage on all of these. obviously we're going to begin our coverage now in the weather center and meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, yeah, if this storm
6:01 am
system would have slowed down by a few hours it would not be as bad. the fact it's coming in so early, the timing could not be worse right in the heart of the morning drive when people have to get to work, get kids to school. this is what you're driving under. heavy downpours and this has been collecting on your local roadways, heavy accumulations for the past few hours so. it's dangerous out there and now the wind is picking up. we want to bring in bob redell live in san jose this morning where not one, but two drivers, two drivers, got stuck in that flooded area behind you. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, christina. very dangerous and deceptive. this is santa clara under the railroad bridge by the s.a.p. center. about 3:50 this morning we had two drivers who drove into. we spoke to one of them and he said he was going highway speeds and could not tell that the water was there.
6:02 am
he realized that the roads were slick but no idea that these puddles were four feet deep in the center. once he came in there, his car got stuck and he realized he was in some trouble. >> the water started flooding in, into the cab. i'm on the phone with 911, asking do i climb out, do i push it out. they are telling me to remain calm, to wait for the fire department, to wait for someone. but the water's pouring in. the last thing i was going to do was stay in there. >> reporter: he was smart on his way to his job at santa clara university. he did get out. probably wondering how he had the smarts to roll down the electric window before the power shut off action before it shorted out. as he got out another car, another driver going the opposite direction, did the same thing. so salvador aid long with an officer, they helped that man get out. both of the drivers are okay. the cars have water in them.
6:03 am
they had to be towed away by a corrector. salvador upset that he damaged his car accidentally of course. the less season you want to watch your speed. he said he was going the limit. but you want to keep an extra eye out because there are areas which can be deceptive. you might think this is only a foot. you go in the middle. it was up to his chest. i'm looking at it now. that's maybe three feet deep. just be careful to watch out for these flooded areas. this is not something that we're used to with all of this talk of the drought and areas that are flooded. this area, santa clara is shut down. again this is by the dear don station. bringing its bell in the background. 6:30 it might be open.
6:04 am
i don't believe it will recede in that amount of time. i don't see public works operating pumps. reporting live in san jose, bob redell. >> the fire crew busy as they rescued a person stuck in the water behind the san jose municipal golf course. firefighters in gear and vest, it's unclear how the person got stuck and what they were doing out there behind the involve course. >> we're waiting to get more information on the person's condition. >> we are going to check win peggy bunker on the side of the highway with just an amazings story of someone getting in the water and getting without a taxi. >> reporter: you know, that's not something i thought i would hear very often. peggy bunker on the side of a highway. it sounds so dangerous. there is a huge lake that's accumulated here and most of the
6:05 am
lanes to the side of the highway. in fact, several lanes are closed down, there are flares, there are cones blocking off this side of 87 south. so police on the other side, on the side of taylor, there only one lane is getting by. so far it's been a quiet slow, traffic here all sort of watching the situation, now a lot of people having a bad morning getting stuck in traffic, seeing a lot of puddles but maybe nobody having such a bad morning as these women who got trapped in this lake. this white car, they underestimated the depth of the water. when we arrived on seen they had been there for some time. the water was coming up around the car. they actually called a tax tee rescue them from the situation. >> we were talking to your cab driver. looks like you got stuck in the water. are you okay? >> yeah, we're wook.
6:06 am
>> did you drive in not knowing? call a cab. we're glad you're safe. >> thank you. >> reporter: when i see fun beads like that you think maybe they were coming from somewhere fun. i can't imagine a bigger buzz kill than to lose your car like that in deep water. it is a warning for folks that maybe haven't left the house yet heading out into this stormy weather now. we have a respite but huge puddles all over. i know mike inouye is watching that closely. 87 south, as you can see getting by very slowly on that shoulder. the only good news about that this is the reverse commute. less people heading in. so a little bit of respite there, overall very dangerous. we saw this and tow trucks going by almost every 15 minutes. so a tough situation if you're commuting. peggy bunker, "today in the bay." >> i want to check in with ris
6:07 am
tina. it was really coming down. >> dangerous. getting to work this morning is going to be a mission. you want to make sure you're ready for it and obstacles all over the highway. travel quasiusly. the good news that heavy batch is moving out. you'll see that yellow and orange, even red turning to green which is light to moderate rainfall. that's the good news, the chance for flooding is not as heightened as it was a couple hours ago. we continue through the morning we're going to deal with this aftermath. it's raining heavily along the east shore, this is the last batch of that heavy rainfall over dublin, concord, pressing to antioch, discovery bay and in stockton the next couple hours. this is what we're working with throughout the day. if you are someone who works outdoors, got to account for the wind as well. really strong wind as the system moves out into the central valley, into the sacramento valley, gotsing to provide really unstable conditions in its path. i can tell you the wind is
6:08 am
starting to ramp up. this is going to be the next issue. through the afternoon hours we bring in that chance for thunderstorms. let me give you a timeline for today. now through 9:00 team heaviest rainfall will move out by 9:00 mostly out of the bay area. urban flooding is likely through 9:00 a.m. right when rush hour comes to a close. we head through the weekend the first part of saturday looking wet. better day for outdoor activity on sunday. that's going to be a warm-up. warming continues into next week but more rain on the way as of wednesday so. it's a rough ride this morning. let's get all of the particulars, here is mike inouye. >> christina, you know there are so many, too many for me to give you the owe veer lay. be careful. watch for the flooding, watch for the ponding and puddling and do not drive through the puddles. because don't know how deep they are. looking toward 101 where you are driving northbound, you see the water kicking up behind the vehicles, that's on the windshields of the others and
6:09 am
that's causing more issues. traction is an issue so lower the speeds. you need an increased stopping distance. more time to stop. back on the maps the overall look t green means wet road. the arrow shows you where the camera was, slowing for northbound 101. 87, in addition to the blue, we have the blooding reported all morning on 87. peggy did report out there on the side of the road and she's safe now, we hope she stays safe. help her stay safe, slow for flashing lights or cone zones. blocking all but one lane on the southbound side. the northbound side as peggy said is the commute direction moving smoothly but there is a pond this as well. toward taylor, an issue approaching the taylor street bridge. surface streets and around the bay. the blue starting to recede a bit. 580 reports slower drive into livermore but holding steady and lightly through the area and dublin and the dublin interchange toward pleasanton, a
6:10 am
slowdown for 680. friday tends to see a lighter flow and folks are more careful there. here a big crash west 24 continues to have all but one lane closed. that's better news. we had a full closure. friday saving us a little bit. the backup toward highway 13, a couple of alternates. making things light around 24. that's an option. a lots more mileage but a smoother drive. you're ok 580 toward the maze t bay bridge. a look at the bay bridge, soupy conditions. folks traveling under the bay. b.a.r.t. reports mechanical difficulties so there is a problem. delays for all trains. that's a system wide problem. expect delayses overall. bart.gov they give you the details. check your schedules. it's soupy.
6:11 am
bring that umbrella. >> mike, thank you for all of that. 6:10. still ahead, this heavy rain, microclimate weather alert. we'll continue to cover it. you see a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza as the rain covers even the camera lens. >> strong winds throughout too. as you cross some of the bridges. a look at the san mateo bridge. >> a live picture of the off ramp at nobody 280 at race street. there is a vehicle, these coming in from our helicopter. it has gotten serious, we'll continue your coverage coming up next.
6:14 am
good friday morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. we're tracking heavy rainfall, a treacherous morning commute this morning. we've got wind picking up as we speak. and then we change our forecast to the chance for thunderstorms later on. it's going to be a wild weather day. stick wisconsin, we've got you covered all morning long. >> a live look, choppers hovering between two issues on 87, 280 at 87, we have the closure and the flooding we talked about with some lanes closed as you head to taylor, then a crash, a car into the center divide after a spinout. slick conditions at race tree we saw that as well and earlier shot there is your closure, both sides down to one lane, slick conditions. it's dangerous out there. so allow extra time as the rain tapers off we still have to deal with this aftermath. we're covering that all over the bay. so many problems across the bay area. two people had to be rescued after they tried to drive through a flooded road. they got stranded in downtown
6:15 am
san jose. santa clara street near cahill will be closed. both people in the cars made it out okay. >> not too far away a similar situation on northbound highway 87 in san jose. a car trying to make it through what looks like a lake got stuck, crews have cones around the flooding. >> minutes ago firefighters rescued a person from the chilly waters of coyote creek near the municipal golf course. no word on his or her condition or how he or she ended up in the water. >> this morning we have an nbc bay area microclimate alert as we give you a live look at san jose and san francisco overnight, the second storm of the week hits the bay area. bringing with it wind and tons of rain. and it's not just the bay area. >> not just the bay area dealing with this stormy weather.
6:16 am
southern california also seeing its fair share of rain. adrian is live in malibu. >> reporter: there are reports that at least two vehicles are trapped by debris from rockslides, those reports coming in around 4:00 this morning. we can tell you that the rain has slightly subsided in the malibu area. about an inch of rain overnight. because of that we know that california highway patrol has enhanced a closure, one on pacific coast highway that was supposed to expire at 6:00 this morning as now been extended until noon because of the concerns about the mud slide and rock slide condition in this area. driving through this area was a challenge. we saw rocks the size of tennis balls to the size of bowling balls on the road, that was what has authorities so concerned this morning.
6:17 am
of course this area in malibu, the springs fire broke. talking about rough hi 30,000 acres of land charred, thousands of homes threatened. took nearly 1,000 firefighters to contain that. since we're in the drought there hasn't been a lot of rain, that means a lot of the trees haven't groan in. the shrubbery and pushes, that means we're ripe for rock and mud slide conditions. there has been a closure of pacific coast highway for a 9-mile stretch. that has been enhanced, increased for six more hours today. first we'll keep you posted. as of right now no major incidents on the road though we're hearing that two vehicles are draped by debris. >> thank you. >> we've got another storm, we've got this one moving through during the commute. let's check in with you, christina. >> that's the bad news the commute. we need the rain, that's the good news so looking at both
6:18 am
sides of a story. the more prepared you are, the better off you'll be this morning. it's all a good idea to make sure you give yourself plenty of time whenever their shaur is on the radar. local flooding across the bay area, you really need to exercise caution. we have a lot of rainfall coming into the bay area. let's take it out live and show you what we are working with. pockets of yellow and orange, you can see the general nature, all of that heavy stuff is starting to press into the sacramento valley and into southern california. where they desperately need it. we don't need it all at once. i'm going to focus on the heaviest batch of rain along the east shore from oakland to hayward, morgan hill getting a little bit of a break for the time being. there is more rainfall on the way. whatever makes its way over the santa cruz mountains arrive the next 15, 20 minutes.
6:19 am
we're not getting a lot of break time between these. as the main front starts to pull out now those winds are picking up. these are sustained speeds at 20 miles per hour in half moon bay. straight out of the south against our prevailing wind speed. we usually get wind out of the northwest so. this could take trees down. that's what we're going to be watching for. we'll keep you updated. mike inouye is certainly busy. good morning to you. >> good morning. we are looking toward the south bay. we lost our chopper signal. weather may be playing a factor. we all have to deal with that. playing a fokt ter for highway 87. we hit all but one lane. peggy is out there. a crash car in the center decide. they are starting to clear that lake out. the northbound side the commute, chopper, they had a closure for a short time. i'm told this is northbound 87 coming up toward the same area. we're down to one lane as we
6:20 am
pass by. another crash, car in the center divide and chopper was over there. a lighter flow in the opposite direction. that's generally what you're dealing with which you do see quite a bit around the bay. loots look here, folks in the south bay looking pretty good. looking northbound 101 with the slowdown. that's the typical pattern. we're going to see a ripple back all the way to curtner and maybe capital expressway so take guadeloupe parkway that's what you're dealing with. the blue on the map, the green means wet, we're seeing that but starting to move around get lighter. bob was reporting, laura told you, some of the closure by s and p center. out of the livermore valley but the spots i've circled early in the morning i have spots and i'm keeping them around there because of likely suspects.
6:21 am
the commute direction heading south through livermore into sunol. we do have this, deadly crash west 24 at least one lane is open. as you travel west from highway 13 over to 580. and that connector. that's a major -- we're seeing a lighter flow of traffic so folks are able to take ash by, we saw a big burst or 13 which southbound we don't see flowing, we're seeing a good flowing and below 60 miles per hour and toward the upper 50s moving back west, the loop adding the mileage but thingses moving. over to the maze, pretty kiptal for a friday. on the right you have cash lanes that backed up. a smooth drive, the influences with bonding and puddling. >> starting to show dry conditions, it's just not so
6:22 am
muched with water. we'll look at the pen pens. palo alto shows a smooth drive. you see how quick it is, one of this is that you want to be with. tracking is a problem. now we have to look to the nord bay. the water picking up. down toward san rafael as the water kicks up from the car in front of you. back to you. >> it is really coming down, you can here it in the studios. still ahead the wind, rain, microclimate weather alert. can you make it out? >> let's look at our crams in the south bay. little bit of a sun peeking through. we'll continue to cover your difficult commute.
6:25 am
dangerous driving conditions as you head out the door this morning. our chopper flying high above the bay area. it is coming down on all parts. christina is taking a look at the radar. we're seeing massive flooding and ponding on the roadways. >> take it slow or change your plans even better. let's go live to anthony slaughter, he is live at highway 28, next to 280 in saratoga. good morning. >> reporter: we got here about 10 minutes ago and the off ramp was closed at saratoga. we're next to the highway wall, you don't want to set up on the highway obviously because that's dangerous. the off ramp was closed about 30
6:26 am
minutes, now it's reopened. the thing to note from our last shot when we were in campbell an hour ago, as we moved through saratoga every single seemed as though every quarter of a mile there was some kind of off ramp shut down, crews on the roads clearing gutters. so this has been an active wa morning. be prepared and be prepare forward a little debris in the roadway, make sure you're alert before you hit the road. the other thing to make note of we're not done. even though it may seem we're in a break the storms are expected to move through later this afternoon and some will pack the same punch as the ones earlier. and again, it's still raining here so keep that in mind as you head out on the area roads. back to you guys. >> thank you. 6:26. still ahead "today in the bay" we'll continue to cover this heavy rain with our weather alert. >> here is a live picture of sunol grade and keep it slow, in
6:27 am
6:29 am
>> right now on nbc bay area microclimate weather alert. the bigger of the two storms slams the bay area overnight. a live look at san jose, fremont, the san mateo bridge and san francisco. good morning everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> take a look at the live weather radar for you. the bulk of the storm hit the bay area while you were sleeping. this means you can expect wet roads, slippery conditions when you head out on the roads this morning. >> one spot dealing with heavy flooding is highway 87 in san jose. you can see a tow truck driver wading into the water to help a car that got stuck in the
6:30 am
southbound lane right in the middle of the freeway. other parts of san jose getting flooded. fire crews actually rescued a person stuck behind the municipal golf course. right now it's unclear how the person got stuck and what they were doing out there. we're waiting to get more information on the person's condition. the waters are frigid. >> let's check in with bob redell. you talked to a driver who got stuck in four feet of water. >> reporter: yes, actually two drivers. good morning to you, scott and laura. it happened on santa clara. this is near the s.a.p. center. the water has receded. about a good did hour or two ago this was up another let's say foot and a half if you look down at the feet of our photographer, henry right there, you get a sense of the depth. you go to the center probably at three feet. earlier it was four feet. you can see this red car and white car. once the cars got into the
6:31 am
center there, those cars stopped. water not good for the engine. we spoke with one driver, he told us around 350 this morning he was coming in to work, said he was going to limit, came into the bridge. i think he knew there was water but no sense how deep it was. once he got in the middle his car stopped. water started flooding into the cab. he did have the smarts to roll down his electric window before the battery shorted out. called 911. they told him to sit tight. he decided to hop out. as he got out he said the water was chest high. he doesn't think this situation was avoidable give at any circumstances, the conditions this morning. >> it was dark. you couldn't see the water so the other lady asked if i was going fast. i'm telling her i was going 35. i was going the speed limit so you couldn't avoid it.
6:32 am
>> reporter: as he got out, the driver of another car, that white car you saw earlier, same thing, going the opposite direction, got stuck in the water so that driver we heard from along with a police officer helped that driver. both drivers are okay. back out live this area is shut down, we're on santa clara between stockton and cahill. it's going slow, the city of san jose, the pd, thought 6:30. this is still here. i'm guessing that public works is busy trying to deal with other clogged trains and trying to figure out getting this unclogged. this area is going to be shut down. if you have business you have to find a different route. reporting live, bob ro dell. >> we've got christie smith in north san jose. what's going on there? >> reporter: good morning to you. i have to tell you we've been driving all over the bay area
6:33 am
and it seems the worst hit the south bay. i wanted to show you what the skies are looking like. you can see the clouds moving on this and clearing. this is more what we were dealing with overnight and this morning. and other parts of the bay area ominous dark clouds. that was causing serious problems in san francisco where a drivy lost control because of rain-slick roads and ran into a building at silver avenue and princeton. fortunately that driver made it out unharmed. the other story the wind overnight and that of course soaked the grounds from all of the rains and that helped a tree to topple over on 37th avenue near income. it blocked two lanes of the roadway for a time until it could be cut up, pushed out of the way. >> near hickey a car rolled
6:34 am
over. that driver did suffer an injury. lanes blocked about an hour. similar on harrison. another car rolled over and hit the side of a building. damage on that one at least to the building minor and in that one also the driver not hurt. so we may be getting a break and certainly still rain-slick roads out there. >> thanks, christie. >> a collection of crashes. goodness. so the worst is over? where are we? >> we're kind of in between. the heaviest stuff is done but now we have another weather element, that's the wind. after that the chance for thunderstorms. so you'll see this batch of yellow and red, it's racing into the sacramento valley. let me show you where we are. i want to stop the clock on that and give you an idea. most of that shower activity is subsiding, located mostly over
6:35 am
the santa cruz mountains, you're still getting a little activity. we're starting to lighten up. santa clara valley starting to see improvement. we have heavy watches over the east shore so you want to take it easy. and plan on slick conditions. if you work, plan accordingly. they had to put up a tarp to get the project finished. gusts to 50 miles per hour, getting into this afternoon, showers will lighten up but that's when we focus our attention to thunderstorms especially over the higher elevation and the coast. as you head home from work looking much better as far as the rainfall goes. then we get another wave of moisture into the overnight hours. you probably want to make outdoor plans on sunday as of saturday early we still have showers on the radar. so as you can imagine a rough
6:36 am
drive. let's find out if there is anything new. >> a lot of new friends. that's why even though the weather is starting to crop up, an issue for the drive. not aclivety raining. look at the bay bridge, the water, split conditions on the approach. folks have to break earlier because there are tough conditions. the backup, the metering lights on, they don't always turn on so that's the note for you. the map will show you in the area across into san francisco the bridge is moving but the bart system experiencing major delays. anything over 15 to 20 minutes as host travel through that to be. mechanical difficulties. they are moving. we're looking here west 24 moving as well. all lanes are open after an earlier deadly crash. don't have a lot of detail.
6:37 am
highway 13, as the lanes open we have that ripple. over west 24 to the maze a. slow drive. looking at these maps, wet damp roadways. starting from 580 as the traffic starts to build, in livermore in the 50s. over toward the dublin interchange. no problems for 680. there are the conditions, the off ramp at the bottom of the screen. even the gentle curve there are spin-outs likely. that's why we warn you. a steady flow. back to the maps i showed you the south bay. 1 101. a traffic break into the area toward taylor looks like the lanes reopened. slow commute. >> that's the big story of our day. a microclimate weather alert.
6:38 am
6:41 am
we are getting word this morning there are delays at sfo because of the weather. san francisco international airport experiencing rain and high wind speeds, this according to flight aware.com t website you're looking at now. these are mostly arrival delays but several outbound flights delayed as well. >> the rain stretching to southern california where thousands brace for possible mudslides. a 10-mile stretch of highway 1 is closed through ventura county because of sliding rocks. in glendora mandatory evacuations are in effect and flood barriers are in place. this is near the area that was destroyed by a wildfire back in january. >> the latest storm is helping california's water supply. experts say don't let your guard down t situation is still critical. the snowpack survey found the snowpack is 24% of average for this time of year. that's the good news is that the sierra will get more snow as all
6:42 am
of the rain becomes snow out there. >> coming up continuing coverage of our nbc bay area microclimate alert including a driver stuck in four feet of water. how the man behind the wheel pulled himself to safety. >> major flooding on highway 87, waist high water left one driver stranded. >> and we're still tracking pockets of heavy to moderate rainfall although the heaviest is now moving out of the bay area. now we're focusing on winds which will whip today and the potential for thunderstorms. we're going to give you the timeline for the changes when "today in the bay" comes right back.
6:45 am
6:44. an nbc bay area microclimate alert as the bay area deals with slick roads from a wet windy and powerful storm. we have cameras set up all over the bay area. a live look and what you can expect in san jose, san francisco, dublin and fremont. >> the second of two storms hit the bay area early this morning. and this one wet are and windier than the first. it started down in the south bay overnight pounding hard. take a look at this new video overnight in san jose. wind whipping flags around, plenty of rain soaking up the streets. as the morning has gone on things have gotten worse. now we're seeing severe flooding and some water rescues. this driver stranded earlier in san jose. >> check out the waist high water on 87 in san jose. tow trucks working overtime. let's begin in our weather center with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you.
6:46 am
if you are just joining us this has been going on for the past few hours. we're talking about heavy rainfall. i set your radar back. you'll notice that a lot of the heavier rainfall is moving out of the bay area at the current time we're getting a bit of a break. but there's a lot of aftermath and more showers developing. getting ready to head into the south bay and they are already located along the peninsula again so. you're getting wet after having a brief opportunity to dry out. i want to bring in our own bob redell who is live this morning in san jose. and bob, i can tell enthusiasm is really interesting. i queried how much rain came down in that very location, and it was two inches over the course of about two hours. we ended up accumulating what, four feet out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. so much water, two drivers thinking it would be okay to drive under the railroad bridge. we're on santa clara.
6:47 am
you can see the water is going down if you were to look at the water line against the concrete. where that water line is, gives you an idea of how high it was a few hours ago. it's four feet deep at one point. it was around 3:50 this morning when the first driver, we talked to him. you look at the driver, with the red car heading to work. he was going the speed limit. came here, noticed it was slick, probably thought there was a puddle but didn't realize how deep it was. when he got in the middle of this area under the railroad bridge, he stopped. he got stuck in as i mentioned four feet of water. that's when he decided to make the call to 911. >> driving in you can't even see the water. basically drove in there. called 911 right away. luckily a pedestrian saw me, told me to climb out the window. couple minutes after the first cop arrived and just as he was arriving and i was talking to
6:48 am
him that white car was headed in the opposite direction. he basically drove in there as well. >> reporter: so that was salvador garcia. the driver of the red car as the water was coming in, 911 said sit tight. he thought i'm going to hop out. he was smart, before he lost power to the car, assume he lost power he did roll down the electric window. the driver of the white car got out. the cars were no longer drivable and they removed them. you can see the city of san jose worker came out to take a look at the situation. i yelled to him i said is this a drainage issue or pump issue. there are pumps under here that pump the storm water system. and i had a viewer e-mail me suggesting the same. can't tell if they are working or not working fast enough. the water is receding. they hoped to have this cleared by 6:30. clearly we're past that point.
6:49 am
so, santa clara, alameda stretch still shut down, again by the s.a.p. center. the two drivers' cars trash, need repair, but they have are okay. this is a lesson to all of us. we've been hearing about the drought. now we're talking flash floods but you want twant to be carefu. this guy going with the bicycle in the middle. and he's going to make it t out. gives awe sense of how deep it isn't anymore. he wouldn't have been able to do that two hours ago. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> talk about play by play. a little worried about him. >> bob's not the only reporter with a story of people driving submarines. peggy bunker is on 87. i drove around on my way to work. not everybody was as lucky as me. >> reporter: that is exactly right, scott. this morning it was really dark. you couldn't see how deep this puddle s. we're going to call this lake 87. i'm going to take the authority and name this lake 87. as you can see take a look at
6:50 am
how keep this is. this is about as deep as i can walk. what happened is they closed off a lot of 87, in fact, several lanes, only one lane is getting by on theshoulder. i saw emergency vehicles trying to repair some of the drainage on the side of the road and get rid of this lake and open it up. the only good thing for this situation is it's a reverse commute. people trying to get in going north. earlier this morning around 5:00 in the morning when we found two young women on the way home from somewhere, drove right into this ponding here on 87 south. you can see they found themselves in dire circumstances quickly. they stayed with their car. and waited for a cab to come pick them up. later on we saw a tow truck come, tow the car out of the waterment we saw an suv. a chevy suburban get towed away due to the depth of this water so. if you come back live we'll show you the situation again right now, this is 87 south by the

taylor overpass. and there are cars going by now just one single lane, emergency crews trying to clear up this situation. still, something to look out for if you are headed this way. on another note, i need to give a shout out to our own christina loren who loaned me these boots. i don't think i would be in such a situation if i was wearing the heels i showed up in work in. letting us get out here. the rain letting up as you can see and doing well. good morning. >> all right. >> no kidding. >> the boots were made for walking around puddles. >> exactly. san jose fire crews this morning rescued a man stuck in the water behind the san jose municipal golf course. you see the firefighters in the water rescue gear including helmets, vests, firefighters say a homeless man became trapped in waist deep waters in coyote creek. crews found him clinging to trees. he was pulled out of the water
6:52 am
and taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia. the waters can be frigid. >> we have crews all over the bay area. let's go to christie smith. what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. here we're getting a little break from the rain. based on our driving experience all around bay area we could use a little break. at one point it sounded like small pebbles were hitting my windshield. a break from the rain but we're seeing wind out here moving that palm tree around. when it's dark and the roads are flooded you don't see it until you're in it. the rain caused major problems starting at northbound 280 near hickey overnight where a driver lost control. the car rolled over. the driver needed help getting out and suffered minor injuries. on silver and princeton in san francisco, rain slick roads caused a driver to lose control and run into the side of a building. somehow that driver wade it out
6:53 am
unharmed. the wind, rain and soaked ground took down a big tree. that blocked two lanes before it could be cut up and cleared out. but you know, it's the wrecks that are the story. so many of them. another rollover, this time at 18th and harrison. fortunately that driver, too, was okay. as i mentioned we are getting a break. so now and then you see these dark clouds but you also see a little bit of sunshine. we know of course this isn't the last. as you head out even if it's not pouring on you there is a chance you run into street flooding. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. let's turn to the airports, we're getting word of delays of up to four hours, particularly inbound but also outbound at san francisco international airport. flights are delayed because of rain and high wind speeds. this according to flight aware which is the website you're
6:54 am
looking at. we were listening to bob's report. he was in the flight path of sjc. >> so the worst of the storm started early this morning, moved through, what are we looking senate. >> we're still getting a couple heavy waves of rainfall through the next couple hours, then things are going to relax and scott's on point. we checked the page before coming on and everything seems to be on time now. we'll keep you updated. let's take to you the radar show. you what is coming our way. you can see that's the next batch of rainfall. that will kind of break apart as it rides over the santa cruz mountains. we're not going to get a lot of that in the south bay. what will happen is we're going to see this string of moisture extend from half moon bay all the way to hayward in the next half hour or so. overall we're looking pretty g. through 9:00 a.m. the heaviest rainfall. for the most part we're done with the worst of it. our focus is going to shift. we have other concerns.
6:55 am
we get that daytime heating, that sunshine, we have a better chance for thunderstorms later today and the wind is going to increase as that main front starts to pull out of the area so. 3:00 p.m. to midnight we're keeping the chance for pop-up showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. nonetheless, weekend looks okay. you notice that on the seven-day forecast. we're going to clear out by saturday afternoon. let's check your drive. it's been rough. mike, thank goodness it's here for us this morning. >> thank goodness i don't have to drive. it's safer. the roadways are wit all over the bay. the latest we heard about this seconds ago. at civic there is a crash and it's closed. slick conditions all over the bay, flooding as well in many spots like we're illustrating for the south bay, san jose, north 101 as well, over the bay we have a slower drive because of wind advisories through the area. the maps tell you one thing. we see slowing an it's slower than the typical friday. let's look at the live conditions. the live camera, palo alto
6:56 am
slick, rain falling, the wipers are lincoln but slick so slow those speeds. across the san mateo bridge, where it's soupy there. you can't make out the high rise, the traffic flows smoothly again, a little lighter, slow it down, you got time. a camera in sunol. no active rain but slick here. the bay bridge toll plaza. water on the lens, low clouds throughout area. we'll look at the north bay. it's darker. slowing from highway 37 to central san rafael. it's just out there. back to you. >> let's continue our weather alert coverage in southern california. dave malkof live in azusa, that area recently burned in a wild fire. now mud is a problem. >> reporter: the same storm that is causing traffic problems in your area and road closures is causing bigger problems down here in southern california. you can see they have these
6:57 am
sandbags that are 45-50 pounds each set up here. but if the side of the mountain decides to come down these things are not going to keep it from going into the homes here. let me show you a real situation going on right now. you see this doesn't -- this isn't just some fog that comes in. it's mixing with fog but what you see is smoke coming off of the side of the hill. this is smoke from the kobe fire. here's video. that was one month ago. how could a fire that burned one month ago be still burning? well, the problem is that gets in the root system under the ground and it smolders up there. there are documented cases where that happens for a year. so not only do we have a boulder coming off the side of the mountain but we have the fire re-igniting again. and fire rescue checked and say
6:58 am
they are going to let this one go because we've got so much rain and the rain's handling it. the mudslides, they can't handle that one. >> dave, extraordinary. thank you. >> coming back to the bay area, check in with anthony slaughter, he is live in saratoga this morning. getting lighter throughout? i see it's coming down on you. >> reporter: it is coming down. in fact in the last 15 minutes the winds picked up. it's off and on and now it's raining pretty heavy. that's going to continue to be the case through the morning and the afternoon. we're not done, the wind is going to pick up. that's our main concern because the ground is very saturated so with any little bit of wind for any of the trees, especially the trees that died over the past year, those are the ones that risk, have the highest risk of falling. i've been looking around and things are calm. it's a pretty healthy looking neighborhood as far as the trees
6:59 am
go f. you have dead trees in the yard or tree limbs that look like they are not going to make it, you may want to trim those off if you have free time in between some of the rain today. if you are off, if you got to get to work take it easy, go slow, pack the patience. make sure you are alert and aware before you hit those roads. back to you. >> thanks a lot. >> check in one more time with christina. >> good morning to you. a lot of our trees have been damaged by the dry conditions and the drought. now that this wind is starting to increase the chance for downed trees intensifies. there is another wave of moisture getting ready to press onshore. it's impacting part of the peninsula, make its way into san francisco. we're tracking it for you all morning long. >> first of all if you are riding bart we have system wide delays due to technical problems, north 87, peggy and bob told you about the flooding
