4:30 in the morning on a monday. i'm scott mccrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia canon this morning. first let's check in with christine. >> good morning, everyone. we have more rain on the way as of today so don't leave home without that you umbrella. we're going to see a nice comfortable afternoon temperaturewise but this rain will be moving in by about lunch time today. 65 degrees in the east bay. 64 along the peninsula, south bay at 65 degrees. we have more chances for much needed rainfall as we continue throughout the week. we're going to talk all about your changing forecast coming up. let's check your drive on a monday. >> good morning, christina. unfortunately we have to start off with very serious news. about 1:00 in the morning i got information from freemont pd. this is on osgood between auto mall and blake alley is closed. we just heard from freemont pd.

they expect it closer to 7:00, if that. you see that very serious mash-up for the car. as i understand it a mother and her 4-year-old child were involved in this crash. we are getting more details on it. it is a little tough they're taking care of the situation. bob redell will be there to get that information from the scene coming up in a live report. mission boulevard in freemont. this connecter between 880 and warm springs is going to be closed at least in the eastbound direction for the next half-hour, possibly the next hour because of overnight work they've been doing. we'll get out to the bay bridge, no problem, no road work at the toll plaza. but on the span itself one lane is closed. they continue to work on the accoutrement for the bridge. they're putting in an elevator and maybe some french lessons, guys. back to you. welcome to the developing story in the ukraine on this monday morning. there are concerns russian

forces are spreading out of the south taking hold of other parts of the country. dozens of people reported hurt after clashes in the city of kharkov, the nation's second largest city. violence broke out when pro-russia activists stormed the regional government headquarters. thousands had had gathered outside the building to protest against ukraine's new leaders calling for ukrainians' re-unification with russia. you saw there. there it is, the russian flag flying over the building for a short time. back in washington, leaders are preparing a tough response to what secretary john kerry calls a russian invasion. he plans to travel to ukraine tomorrow to meet with the country's new government. he says world leaders are prepared to isolate russia but that may be a consequence that vladimir putin is ready for. >> he's made a cost/benefit analysis. he has weighed the costs of doing what he's done and he has viewed the benefits. clearly he has concluded that the benefits far outweigh the costs. we need to endeavor to change

that calculus. >> he does not care, and in many ways his action is directly for that purpose, to show swagger in the world. >> now some of those costs president obama warned about last week could include boycotting the g-8 meetings in sochi, freezing assets and banning visas. some americans have already evacuated from ukraine, including a bay area man who returned home just last night. joseph was one of hundreds of peace corps volunteers rushed home after the violence began. he was in ukraine for almost two years working as an english teacher. he says he understands now why they needed to leave but it doesn't make it any easier. he says it has been one of the most exhausting weeks of his life. >> one of the most kind of maybe traumatic db being ripped away from the country and the people that you love the most. but this week has given me the chance to reflect on how resilient and how amazing the ukrainian people are and how we

should never take for granted our freedom and what we have here. >> joseph says he does plan to return to ukraine as soon as it is safe. . the ukrainian working for cirque du soleil in the south bay is leaving today to drive across the country. his car painted like his country's flag. victor performed last week in san jose. he's on a two-week break from the show. he plans it to drive his car across the country to draw attention to the situation in ukraine. he says he is worried about his family and friends who still live there. >> i'm thankful for this freedom i'm living here for almost 20 years right now and i made my career here and i'd love my people to have the same opportunity and i just heartbroken to see what's going to happen. i can't even comprehend. >> his trip will begin at justin herman plaza, then head to santa monica, eventually new york city. we'll have a preview of his trip. stay with nbc bay area both

online and on air for continuing coverage as this developing story unfolds. when we're not on the air, there's nbcbayarea.com. sign up for breaking e-mail alerts. in south africa this morning, olympian oscar pistorius pleaded not guilty to murder for the valentine's day shooting of his girlfriend last year. this morning's plea marks the start of the high-profile courtroom in a pretoria courtroom. pistorius is a double amputee known as the blade runner. he says when he thought his girlfriend rieeva steenkamp was breaking into the home when he shot her through the bathroom door. police believe the shooting was intentional. the trial is expected to last three weeks. more than 100 witnesses are expected to testify. >> we expect the law to take its course. we've been waiting for this trial for quite some time now. the time has come, we want to hear the truth. >>. if pistorius is convicted he faces a minimum of 25 years in prison. steenkamp's mother came to court today and met pistorius for the first time. she says she came to court to "really look him in the eye."

this morning investigators in martinez are trying to figure out why a girl who was hit and killed by a freight train yesterday was on the tracks if the first place. police say this train struck and killed the girl as it was traveling through martinez. it happened around 5:00 last night between old orchard and howe roads. one witness says she might have been trying to grab her phone that had somehow fallen on to the tracks. >> they'd seen the grieving parents and the boyfriend and i guess apparently she'd reached back for her cell phone the last minute as she was trying to get out of the way of the train. so it is really, really sad. >> the investigation continues. it will not affectny train schedules today. a warning has been issued to sclera university students to be very aware of their surroundings. this comes in response to three attacks on or near campus over the weekend. two students were robbed at gunpoint, one on campus, another near campus on saturday morning. police say the suspects tried to rob another victim but that person saw the gun and managed to get away. this morning police say they

have little information to go on and they do want to talk to anyone who may have seen or heard something. as for the campus alert, police are urging students to walk in parkways. if they see something suspicious, report it immediately. now to our weather and the microclimate forecast. this is a live look at freemont as we watch traffic move by. mike, down in the south bay, san jose, looking clear. parts of the bay area still cleaning up from friday's mass irv storm. more rain is headed our way. >> that's good news. meteorologist trchristina is keeping an eye on things. >> good morning, everybody at home of. as we progress throughout the day today, more rainfall will be on the way. you'll notice on your seven-day forecast. we stopped the clock at 7:00 a.m. right as "today in the bay" concludes. showers starting to intensify up

in the north bay. that's where they're going to stay put for most of the day. by 2:00 p.m., we're getting some of the rich moisture tapping back into that atmospheric river. as of 2:00 p.m., i can tell you we aren't expecting heavy rainfall tote lz like we had on friday. i'll get that off the table right away. as he we progress through the overnight hours, showers continue to come in and even for the first part of tomorrow we are keeping those showers in the forecast. stick around. i'll let you know how much we are expecting and what this all means for tahoe in my next report. right now though, let's check with mike who, unfortunately, has a really serious situation this morning. we do. good morning, folks. we have to take you out to freemont. i told you about the very serious crash closing down a roadway in freemont itself as osgood. bob redell has arrived on scene. he's gotten a little more information. bob, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well good morning, mike. osgood right now, this section, north of durham auto mall, is

shut down and pd here in freemont expect it to be shut down until 7:00 this morning. you see behind me the reason why. you are looking at what is the result of a horrible head-on collision between two cars, two sedans. this happened just after midnight. it was around 12:15 this morning. pd tells us that a mother and her 4-year-old daughter were coming down osgood when the mother according to police strayed into the opposite direction of traffic colliding head-on with the driver of another car. the mother and her 4-year-old daughter are at the hospital. they have life threatening injuries. they are fighting for their lives according to pd, and pd also tells us that they smelled alcohol on the mother's breath. so they are also investigating her for possibly driving under the influence. the driver of the other car in the oncoming car, that was a man. he also admitted to police what police are telling us that he also had a few drinks but they are not investigating him right now for driving under the influence. he was treated and released, was

hurt in his legs but not life threatening injuries, as mentioned, he was let go after this accident. if you come back out here live, you can see one reason why this is taking so much time, because it involves alcohol, because of lives are threatened and then also you've got a mess in the road so it's got a lot of debris so it is going to be a lot of clean-up. again, freemont police telling us it will probably be until 7:00. won't be until 7:00 which is just over a couple of hours from now before they re-open this section of osgood. again here, we're north of durham auto mall south of blake house. basically in the middle of those two roads. >> thank you, bob. for those getting off of the freeway, that's the road that goes right past the entrance to frye's. the big landmark there. looking over here to a live look as well. emeryville, over at the bay bridge, crossing the bay, smooth drive. overnight crews still there.

well, good monday morning to you. boy, up and at 'em at 4:45 as we take a look at the beautiful bay bridge. the san francisco city council is set to vote on a bottled water ban tomorrow. the proposal would outlaw the sale of all bottled water on city property starting october 1st for indoor events, and in 016 for outdoor events as well. proposal also calls for more drinking fountains and water bottle refilling stations. ahead of tomorrow's votes a rally is set to be held on the steps of city's hall. that includes a blind taste test of san francisco's tap water versus bottled water brands. this morning dozens of college students in the south bay will ditch the classroom to board buses bound for sacramento. students from both san jose city and evergreen valley college are headed to the state capital nep want lawmakers to pass a

proposed pilot program which would allow community colleges to offer students four-year degrees. the trip is part of the annual march in march event where thousands of students from across the state head to the capital to call for more support for public education. well, apple is launching the new system today aimed at making using technology in your car safer. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, courtney reagan is live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. futures are a touch lower this morning. renewed concerns over ukraine sparked a miss close for the markets on friday and it is not over yet. stocks were still up in the month of february. the s&p 500 managed to set another record close. both the dow and s&p ended up 4% higher for the month of february while the nasdaq rose 5%. iphone users will have a much safer way with a simple

word or touch. top auto brands like ferrari, mercedes-benz and volvo will premier car play to drivers this week while toyota, gm and others are expected to unveil the app further down the road. this all comes amid rumors apple could be eyeing a bid for tesla motors. the useful unemployed may want to go west to seek out their next jobs. you could have some company. a new report revealed 7 of the 10 spaces of job growth this year will be in in the west thanks to housing, technology and tourism industries. texas, colorado, utah, idaho and oregon are the ones mainly benefitsibe benefitting from a rebound in housing and some oil growth. >> thank you, courtney reagan. there was a report the other day we're paying interns around $80,000 a year -- in kidding -- in high tech. >> the question is where do you

live? that sort of balances out with the housing. that's the other issue. but it is so beautiful here most of the time, people will pay for it. it is a high price for sunshine. >> and the beautiful landscapes we have here in the bay area. i think it is probably the prettiest place in the entire country. right now we have some more rainfall. this isn't really going to put a damper on your morning drive. just keep in mind that showers are going to come in morsteadly as we head throughout the day today. maybe a hoodie by lunch time. widespread rainfall moving into the bay area. temperatures are going to be comfortable. right now we're in the 50s, headed towards the mid 60s. it is the subtropical moisture coming up. it is not that cold out there but we are still getting that rain. some of this moisture that comes later on is going to be very rich. for today, cloudy start, few north bay showers for the morning drive. not enough to really get your highway slick but by 11:00 a.m. that all changes. we'll track those showers for you during our midday broadcast. as we head throughout the evening commute, that's when the

morsteaddy rain develops. we could see slow and go traffic. keep that in mind. if can you get out of the office early today, it might be a good id idea. another chance for showers tomorrow morning. then into thursday but a little bit after break over the weekend. i don't know if we want the break though, guys. i hate saying this -- daylight saving time on sunday. it is the one where we lose an hour of sleep. yeah. over to you, guys. well, despite growing support for the legalization of recreational marijuana in california, governor jerry brown says not a good idea. the governor made the comments on "meet the press" yesterday. california was the first state to legalize pot for medical use, but when host david gregory asked the governor in california should follow in the footsteps of colorado and washington, which have legalized recreational pot, brown did not mince words. >> very competitive.

this was a selfie that was recorded for the record books. what a picture. degeneres tweeted out this photo of herself alongside hollywood royalty including jennifer lawrence, meryl streep, kevin spacey and bradley cooper. she added if only brad's arms were longer. selfie earned more than a million retweets. >> that's amazing. let's go back to the grammys a couple of months ago. the hat made famous by pharrell. >> the hat was auctioned off on ebay for $44,100. the buyer -- fast food restaurant arby's. the money will go to pharrell's charity. after he sported that hat in january, many compared did to one made famous by arby's official logo. arby's says they're quite happy to support a good cause and "get our hat back." it is early monday but we do is to alert folks to some local

issues. we'll start with the bigger freeway, comes through freemont. 880 moves very smoothly. heading down toward mission, there is a complete closure of mission boulevard between warm springs and 880. that's a major connecter between 680 and 880. should open in the next half-hour. on city streets, osgood road continues to be closed north of auto mall park. we are talking about around the bend and toward the infirmary district. we have this video from a couple of minutes ago. major crash here. we just got an update. mother involved in this crash, non-life threatening injuries but her 4-year-old daughter still has life threatening injuries and that's the latest update from bob redell who continues to give us updates from the scene. another driver was involved and he has some more details as they come in from freemont police.
