good morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker, in for laura garcia-cannon. >> scott mcgrew. b.a.r.t. service between the freemont and south hayward stations shut down this morning all because of a deadly collision which happened 11:30 last night when a train hit a person on the tracks. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live at south hayward b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. says it could be some time before trains are running back at full service. >> reporter: good morning to you. talking over an hour. what a rough way to start the commute. there is no service this morning, no b.a.r.t. service at the south hayward station. when people show up, they find gates are down, signs telling them to go to the bayfair station if they want to get to san francisco this morning. the station agent has been running around telling people they don't have a bus bridge ready, so they'll want to find an alternate way to get there. she found out when she showed up for work. no service from freemont, union city, south hayward. this started around 11:30 last

night when a person was actually hit by a train near the south hayward station. originally they thought they could reopen by 4:00 this morning but that didn't work out. there's so much evidence scattered up there, 300 yards worth on the track, so this investigation and cleanup taking quite some time. commuters, they were surprised. >> where is work for you? >> berkeley. >> reporter: are you going to be late? >> no. i was going to be late if i couldn't find a ride but they said yeah. i'm going to be on time. >> reporter: you didn't know until you got here this was happening? >> yes i didn't know. >> reporter: the investigation, we're being told, won't be complete until after sunrise, which is some time after 6:30, and they're saying the earliest trains might be rolling through the south hayward station. suggestion is for commuters to find another way to get to work or go to that bay fair station. i don't know if you can see in

the distance, an awfully hard working station agent. she has made that sign quickly and physically running around the parking lot telling people, look, you're going to have to keep drive, find another way to get there the station is closed. whatever you do in the meantime, don't come here. live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> that's the news side. talk about the traffic side. for a look at closure, how it's affecting your commute, mike inouye. >> good morning. that station agent working so hard, telling folks don't bother getting out of your car because you can't use freemont, union city, south hayward stations, all closed. b.a.r.t. stop still in effect. 880, more traffic because b.a.r.t.'s saying use the roads, we don't have enough bus drivers for ac transit to put a bus bridge in place. talking the section from freemont from the bottom of the screen to south hayward station, that includes union city, areas

between san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge. 880 will get more crowded bay fair station is the one b.a.r.t.'s saying that will take you into and out of san francisco. that means less parking in that area, more folks on 880 through that area as well. watch for the clorowd to start building. san mateo avoid the backup expected through oakland and head to the peninsula side. also the dumbarton bridge will take some of the reef leaf. south of the san mateo bridge, use that bridge. today a great day for 84 instead of 92. no real change to volume. i'm looking at a cash stackup for the fas-trak lanes at i bay bridge. the story in ukraine continues to develop. 30 observers including some from the united states monitoring the situation in crimea, where pro-russian forces have taken control. russia has agreed to a nato request to hold a special

meeting in bruce sessels. kerry has a meeting planned with his russian counterpart. oscar pistorius' murder trial has just adjourned for the day. earlier the chief defense lawyer pointed the finger at two witnesses that testified accusing them of tayloring their stories to match one another's. the witnesses, a married couple, live next door to pistorius, both said they heard a woman scream, gunshots the night that reeva steenkamp were killed. the defense say there's were differences between the statements the couple gave to police after the shooting and the testimony they gave in court. pistorius claims he thought steenkamp was an intruder the night he shot through a bathroom door, killing her. prosecutors say it was on purpose. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is on his way to silicon valley. meeting with high-tech leaders

and the governor. live outside the computer history museum in mountain view, where the prime minister will be in a matter of hours. good morning to you, damien. >> reporter: good morning. this is the third american stop for the israeli prime minister. he was in washington, d.c. monday, l.a. yesterday, and today, right here in the sill lon valley. as you mentioned, it will be a busy schedule for mr. netanyahu. at the history museum, mr. netanyahu will sign an agreement with governor brown to promote economic development, research, trade. the agreement continues the longstanding tradition of agreements between california and israeli leaders. however, this is a first california visit for israeli leader since 2006. the california agreement will also give israeli companies access to california's innovation hubs or ihubs, including 16 clusters of tech incubators, universities and federal laboratories. security will be tight here at

the computer history museum. mr. netanyahu showed a little sent of humor while in l.a. yesterday, asking if he was at the oscars. the prime minister was on hand for the premiere of a documentary that featured mr. netanyahu. here's what the schedule looks like for the prime minister in silicon valley. signing the agreement here at computer history museum. mr. netanyahu will also make a stop at apple headquarters in cupertino, and meet with co-founder of what'sapp, a jewish ukrainian immigrant who sold his company to facebook last month for $19 billion. tech guru scott budman will be here for the signing later on this morning. more on the news at 5:00 and 6:00. >> busy day there. silicon valley continues to lead the way in jobs. new survey from the silicon valley leadership group shows 60% of high-tech companies plan

to add jobs this year. very few plan lay-offs, less than 4%. 222 companies surveyed. not all of the tech is the same. experts say software and hardware engineers are particularly in demand, but social media jobs are softening. hayward asking voters to decide whether to raise the city's sales tax by half a cent. if approved on the june 3rd ballot, the city would charge 9.5% sales tax, used to pay for more police officers, maintenance workers and a library. voters will be asked to hike the city's hotel tax to 14%, the increase would raise $2.4 million per used, used to fund infrastructure projects. >> christina loren says it will feel like florida hire. >> muggy, right? >> yeah. you don't have to walk outside. take a look at my hair. this is what happens when you get humidity in the bay area. i guarantee you, i'm not the

bay. expecting the most moisture. show your futurecast in a moment. here's mike inouye. >> folks standing by if you're not listening. let them know, friends that take b.a.r.t., hayward's the end of the line between freemont and hayward right now because of a crash last night. someone killed on the tracks. what we're looking here toward san mateo bridge, one of your alternates, avoid the bay bridge. bayfair your best station to get toward the san francisco side. across the bay, around the bay so far, it's light start, it's 5:10, but more cars hitting the road. warning, there's 92, hayward on the right side. that stretch of roadway in toward oakland going to get more traffic because, as we said, b.a.r.t. lines stopped between freemont and hayward. a good stretch from the bottom of the screen to the middle and that will affect folks hitting the roadway. they may not get off the roadway at the bayfair station because

there's not going to be park later on and that's an issue toward the bay bridge, packing in the maze as well. b.a.r.t. system from the east shore freeway and along 24shg li 24, lines are moving fine. into the city, bayfair station to san francisco, only one this thing has more reliable service. south of hayward still closed. bay bridge toll plaza, backup. formed earlier but before all of the cash lanes opened. it's a smooth drive, more cash payers as well. we'll track that again. not expecting b.a.r.t. lines to come into service until 6:30, 7:00 at the earliest south of hayward. live shots. south bay, probably won't be largely affected by the b.a.r.t. commute but i'll track that. any ripple causes effects everywhere. back to you. >> thank you. christians all over the world are marking the beginning of lent this morning with ash wednesday services. thousands of people attended mass in manila. they stood in line to are their foreheads marked with the symbol

good morning to you. welcome back. still no word this morning on where those gold coins found by northern california couple came from but quee rule out one possibility. the u.s. mint in san francisco says, rest assured, they're not ours but if they were, we'd be

going after them. earlier this week, historians speculated the coins stemmed from a heist from the mint in 1900 but a separate historian hired by the couple to sell the coin has another theory. they thinks they came from someone who did business in goal and suspects the person buried the gold and died without telling anyone to the treasure. facebook can add a list of drones to products. purchased titan aerospace for $60 million according to cnbc. facebook wants to use this company to create solar powered drones which would help bring internet access to parts of africa because they're solar powered they can run up to five years without landing. california regulators handed out first official license to ridesharing company. summon, formerly known as insta cab, received its license. the company has several thousand drivers in the bay area.

some parts starting to get wet. 9:00 p.m., heavier moisture coming through. another chance for rain as we get into the weekend. i'll time that out next. here's mike inouye. we're looking here, this is the gates that are closed. the south hayward station or the hayward station? i think south hayward currently closed. the hayward station last end of the line. south hayward, union city, freemont closed because of the continuing investigation after someone was killed on the tracks last night and they can't complete that investigation until after sunrise to see the tracks outside and the evidence in the area. look at the maps. now right now you see the bay area looking good. 519. this results, closure will have folks cut off, freemont, union city, south hayward, stations without access to the b.a.r.t. lines. ac transit trying to set up the bus bridge with b.a.r.t. but ac transit didn't have enough drivers in the area, so

they can't get the full connection between freemont and south hayward yet. b.a.r.t. saying, use alternate forms of transportation, can't use the bus, b.a.r.t. system, must be your car, that's an issue for folk as long 880 adding more traffic. toward san mateo bridge, you might want to take the san mateo bridge across the bay because folks heading on 880 through oakland. bayfair station, b.a.r.t. saying use that towards san francisco side. no other delays other than closure ought ssouth of the hay station. b.a.r.t. transusually handle the crowd. using san mateo bridge as at nate. pittsburg bay point line along 24, east shore freeway, parallel courses to richmond and berkeley curve not a problem. those b.a.r.t. systems are okay, but anytime delayed, that could affect evening commute with changing in the population on

the b.a.r.t. leans. minor crash around the berkeley curve. foster city approach off the san mateo bridge, idea for traffic across that bridge, so far standard here for 92. peninsula shows no real delays. bay bridge toll plaza, more cash drivers. no stackup here. that's a good flow of traffic. we'll expect more traffic out of oakland for 580 and 880 soon. new video of a scary situation caught just in time. a woman apparently tried to drive her minivan into the ocean near daytona beach, florida. she got that far. one of her children screaming she's trying to kill us. didn't make it too far into the water before she jumped out. witnesses jumped in, pulled her kids out of the car. she's undergoing mental evaluation, and kids are going to be okay. >> s.a.t. about to change for the first time in nine years. the college board plans to

good morning. welcome back. hayward b.a.r.t. station, incident has closed that station this morning. it's going to change up the commute if that's the station you use. mike inouye standing by to let you know the latest details on that. new speculation 49ers may have found a quarterback in this year's draft class. head coach jim harbaugh visited northwestern university for the school's all-pro day. yahoo! sports says, while there, harbaugh spent almost an hour playing catch with the former eastern illinois quarterback. he caught the attention of a lot of pro scouts at senior bowl this year. harbaugh says he's impressed with the quarterback's journey so far. >> caught on camera, warriors'

as of now, no b.a.r.t. service between freemont and south hayward. anyone looking to get to san francisco from one of those stations will need to get themselves to the bayfair station or find another way to work. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker, in for laura. service has been shut down since late last night after a person was killed by a b.a.r.t. train near the south hayward station. mike inouye has his eye on that commute and also alternatives to tell you about. we begin today with christie smith live at south hayward b.a.r.t. station with how that investigation is bringing the commute to a halt. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i can tell you, b.a.r.t. riders are keep showing up as they normally do to the south hayward b.a.r.t. station. instead of getting on the trains, they find the gates are rolled down and there is a sign there, letting them know that they should go on ahead and find a way to get to the bayfair b.a.r.t. station if they want to ride into san francisco. and they're getting that message in person from a hard-working

station agent here who is running to each and every car as they pull up, letting people know what's going on, there's no service from freemont, union city, or south hayward this morning because of an investigation into a person hit and killed on the tracks last night. apparently there's quite a lot of debris up there. and no bus bridge yet. b.a.r.t. says that ac transit didn't have personnel in place yet. it takes a lot of people to get that going. i did speak to a man trying to get a bus to work. you heard the news but came here? >> the bus i take stops here. >> reporter: do you think you'll be late? >> yeah, yeah. >> reporter: you seem okay with na. >> yeah. yeah, luckily, i will only be a half hour late, it's not like an hour or two or anything like that. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. is suggesting just find an alternate way to get around. i got off the phone with

b.a.r.t. spokesman jim allison who tells me they have parallel bus service set up that does run along the b.a.r.t. line. look for line 99 or 801 as possible options. again, the a slow morning. he's suggesting that you check ac transit website also. saying earliest this situation could be improved is about 6:30 this morning. again, you'll want to find another way to get around. don't come here to the south hayward station. mike inouye. >> good morning. talking about 6:30, earliest things will clear up for the b.a.r.t. lines. a lot of folks hitting the road before then. 532 and 6:30, folks that hit the commute. in a nutshell, it's a traffic issue. let's get to the screens here. no service for the freemont, union city, south hayward b.a.r.t. stations because of someone hit and killed in the investigation that goes on.

happened last night, investigation does continue this morning. affect on traffic flow. look at next screen. ways to get around towards the san francisco area. get up to the bayfair station where the parking lot will fill up early, folks south of there are going to head to the portion of the bay to get into san francisco via b.a.r.t. lines. 880 crowded. hitting the freeway to get up into the area to find no parking at bayfair or use san mateo bridge to the peninsula side. use 101 to and in out of the city. more traffic there as well. maps as well, this area that's affected this portion of the freeway 880 moves smoothly at the limit. tracking it closely. bay bridge toll plaza no concern now. but this is the section between freemont and south hayward closed. caltrans, got word from a producer, david says that caltrans looks standard as far as population.

at apple headquarters in cupertino, and meet with the co-founder of whatsapp a jewish ukrainian immigrant who sold his company for $19 million. security will be tight here. scott budman will bring you the latest at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. family of a woman found dead in a stairwell in san francisco general hospital is now suing the city. lynne spalding's family says they plan to announce details of a lawsuit at a news conference this morning. the 57-year-old disappeared from her hospital bed in september, later found dead in a stairwell two weeks later. her family seeking unspecified amount of money from the sher f sheriff's department. the lawsuit names the city-run hospital citing medical malpractice. menlo park giving a big thumbs up to facebook's offer to pay for a police officer.

facebook will pay more than h f 500,000 for an officer based in the bellhaven neighborhood. the officer will work with schools and large companies like facebook to develop response plans for catastrophic emergencies. now under the contract, facebook will have no control over the officer but it is the first time a police officer's been paid for by a private company. first time in the entire nation. san jose's mayor says the proposed ballot measure to give hoofl the city's budget to the police departments a horrible mistake. the city council rejected a plan to ask voters to increase voters to increase part of the budget. arguing that publy safety should have a guaranteed share. the mayor and council disagree with that. the council agreed to ask voters to continue an existing special tax to fund city libraries. june 3rd, san jose citizens will

hercules police found several inconsistencies in the alleged victim's story. then he admitted that the whole thing was a lie. the student claimed he was physically and sexually assaulted by three male teenagers in a bathroom. investigators may charge the 15-year-old with filing a false report. police found a teen who attacked a 71-year-old man outside his house. 16-year-old arrested yesterday. police cleave he pushed michael mora down a hill after mora asked a group of teenagers to move their cars. mora's wife said dozens of teens were at a nearby house party, several cars blocking street and driveway. mora had emergency brain surgery and still is in the hospital. a brazen crime caught on camera. someone broke into the lucky grocery store on mission boulevard, walked out with a lottery scratcher machine, the whole thing. discovered a few hours later several blocks away. not all tickets have been
