we had a fun day yesterday. very, very rarely do all of us ladies at the "today" show have a chance to go out -- well, before that, please -- to go out together. we had lunch first at one of our favorites, frankie and johnny's. we all had the exact same lunch. >> we had shrimp scampi. >> salad. >> and spinach and rice. >> with lots of lemon. >> and wine. anyway, so we were eating and drinking and eating and drinking and eating and drinking. >> we were welcoming tamron officially. we still hadn't had an opportunity to really celebrate savannah's engagement, and so we said, let's do lunch and go to a matinee. >> if you ever had one of those lunches where you just -- you're eating and drinking and laughing and time just passes you by. their phones out, no one had their watches out because nobody wears watches noirmt. >> i do. >> you didn't have it on. now the show starts, they ask you to be there before 2:00, 2:00 everyone should be in their seats.

>> and they were having trouble conceiving children. >> right. >> and they decided that they wanted to adopt. >> right. >> and it just so happened when they were adopting their children, they didn't adopt one child, they ended up adopting triplets. >> yes, because -- yes, one adoption and -- >> one adoption, three babies. and they were very excited to have the triplets. well, it just so happened that shortly after the adoption went through, guess who got pregnant? yes, she did. sarah found out she was pregnant, not with one baby, but two. so now within the course of one year, this couple has five babies. >> the triplets are 10 months old and the twins, i guess, are 10 weeks, right? can you imagine? they go through over 80 bottles and 300 diapers a week. and then they have gone through the adoption process for such a long time, can you imagine they thought they had a baby coming and twice the birth mother changed her mind.

comes to parenting. we're doing something a little different today. right, hoda woman? >> we sure are. we're going to critique your parenting, have jen do that. let's talk about your show for one second. you didn't go out there and say, hey guys, i want to do a reality show. they came to you. didn't they? >> the network came to us and said you guys are made for television. and i'm thinking, not so sure about that. but at any rate, they felt like that the crazy we deal with every day was something that the rest of the world could learn something from. >> were you like a helicopter parent? are you like micromanaging your kids? >> do you hover? >> i do hover. i do hover. >> are you concerned about your hovering? do you think that is -- first of all, were you parented the same way? >> i was parented very similar. but i think that i've taken it to a whole other level. and -- >> why? >> i think out of fear of something happening to one of my children and the fact i love them with all of my heart. and i want them to be good, decent, honest people. i want them to be kind people. >> motivations are perfect, right? >> is that the way to do it, do you think? >> no. it is a very short answer. but the motivation is what matters.

if we're parenting out of fear, there is the risk your kids are never going to learn how to really handle the life that they need to handle on their own. and that's really a risk of being too involved and too hovery. they're not going to learn how to pick themselves up when they fall down or problem solve because you're always there to do it for them. >> somebody said parents who hover have children who sneak around. i'm sure that's something you're concerned about. but i know -- i don't know if you're the same age i am, but this world has changed so much since we were children. >> that's right. >> and the way we were parented. so your fear is well founded in some respects. this is a different world now with different problems and different realities. >> absolutely. >> what do we do about those fears, jennifer? >> well -- >> come on. >> the fear is okay. but if you -- we were talking earlier, if we're setting the stage early, setting out morals, values, and explaining to our children early, they're going to make better decisions. but teenagers, their kind of job is to test the boundaries, push

it is that time when we ask lou about the annoying little problems around the house you wish you could fix yourself. >> well, you know what? you can. and here to help you do just that is "today" contributor, host of the syndicated show "house smarts," lou manfredini. >> good morning, ladies. >> hi, sweetheart. it is cold out and people are getting chilled. you have ways to help us out? >> i do. >> here is susan. she says this -- "do you have any recommendation for checking air quality and/or water quality via home kits?"

worried about mold or anything like that that may cause flu-like symptoms. >> so there's all these home test kits that you can buy atted hardware store, the home center. they do a myriad of things. one thing that people are most concerned with is mold, radon, mildew inside the home. these home test kits cost anywhere from $10 to $15. however, they do have a lab component. so for instance, this radon kit, which radon, you know, is a gas, you have to be very conscious of, you take these vials, you put them in the basement. typically, if you have a lower level. leave them for 48 hours. put them in an envelope. mail them to the company. for $30 they will do a scientific analysis and let you know what the air quality is. >> that's a lot less expensive than having someone come in -- >> absolutely. other things, too if you're concerned, if your furnace filters are not the pleated type like these, this will help immensely. and then something else for air quality that i want everybody to remember is carbon monoxide detectors. >> a lot of people do not have those. >> oh, my gosh. we had the story in new york about the restaurant. businesses don't have legislation. please make sure there is one of these on every floor.

>> i can't believe businesses don't require that. >> you would think they would be. our next question comes from judy. she says, "we have a wooden front door, and it's been on the house for over 30 years. we have noticed since it has been so cold in the winter there's no insulation at all around the frame, a lot of air blows around the frame, they've been putting towels under it." >> weather stripping is the number one thing you can do to be warmer. i was at a trade show last week and i discovered this stuff i never saw before, a product called cinch. what they did is they developed a weather stripping, this kind of weather stripping has been around forever. however, they have the super duper sticky 3m tape on the back. all you need to do is peel this away, you can cut this with a pair of tin snips like this to the size, a door kit is about $30, once you cut it in place, with the door closed, you put it here, push it against there. you push it, and you can apply this down to 30 degrees. so even when it's cold out, the tape will stick.
