5:01 am
we begin with breaking news back to hayward where a 3-year-old boy is safe after being thrown from a second floor burning apartment he lived in. flames erupted at this complex on seventh and c streets not far from the hayward loop. now we hear just behind this apartment complex another fire has broken out. christie smith joining us live now. this is just unbelievable. what are the chances, christie? >> reporter: good morning to you. it's hard to hear because there are so many engines here. we were here for one fire, there was a rescue, dramatic rescue, a couple of people jumped out of the window. we saw an orange glow from behind this same building. and it got bigger and bigger. we could hear trees catching on fire. it looked like some sort of outbuilding or garage burning. we kept hearing popping sounds, then all of a sudden sirens. so firefighters were back. this isn't the same property but it's the property right behind it. and this orange glow getting
5:02 am
bigger and bigger. crews are pouring water on it. again, this is where we were earlier, the reason being there was a fire that broke out about 11:00 last night, near the same property. there was a child taken to the hospital unharmed despite the fact that there was a 20-foot drop from a window, the child was thrown out of the window. there was a good reason for it. the fire was burning in the front of the apartment blocking the door so the family couldn't get out. they tossed the baby to an aunt who was waiting below, fortunately she caught him and that 3-year-old boy is okay, taken to the hospital and checked out. but the fire there spread quickly, room to room in this upper apartment at seventh and c streets. a single alarm fire in an eight-unit complex. neighbors say they heard panic and screaming, two adults and a child, 3-year-old at the window with fire chasing behind them. >> it was scary. fire, fire, then all of a sudden
5:03 am
i see the roof. it was terrible. the people jumped out the window. ended up with the baby. >> reporter: again, the adults jumped too, a man and woman. they were taken to the hospital, their conditions unknown. but we're told that the red cross is out helping a couple of the neighbors in this building because the water damage and that the power was cut while this fire was being handled by firefighters. what they tell us is that this one started in the kitchen. while the unit is a loss, three people inside made it out the best way they could, and again, the latest we have, breaking here, you can see a glow still in the back there is that firefighters were called back to the property behind this, because for some reason a fire broke out again. so we're going to try to speak with the firefighters as soon as they are done with this and see what's going on with this latest fire here. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we'll check back with you. let's go over to bob redell at the scene of another house fire this time in san jose.
5:04 am
bob, you have new video of flames as well. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, scott. a man and woman who live at this home on aetna way here in san jose, they are at a hospital right now being treated for what san jose fire tells us are serious burns. not clear if those are life threatening or survivable but serious enough that they had to be transported. look at the cell phone video we just brought into our newsroom from a next door neighbor. shows how intense this fire was when it started around 3:45. you could see the back right, excuse me left part of the house how involved it was. it was involved when the fire department arrived. it destroyed a shed or stuck tur in the back. fire department ended up calling for a second alarm. the fire is now out. back to the two people, a man and woman. there are bars in windows and doors of this home, it's possible that those might have slowed their escape.
5:05 am
forcing them to exit through the garage which might have been the longer way out. we just heard from the captain with the fire department says there was an emergency release on those bars, a lever that can be activated from the inside so you can get out in a situation like that. even though that release is on the bars, they were not activated. it's not clear why they took that route as opposed to a window. that's what did happen. >> they came running out the garage, they were screaming, yelled, call the fire department. >> reporter: what condition were they in? >> they weren't that bad. they were still walking but you could see one of them was holding their arm and crying. >> reporter: that is something as the fire department points out you can have people like that man and woman who escape on their own are walking and talking, but are still in bad shape because they have these burns. we don't know what their
5:06 am
condition is right now. as far as the cause, that's yet to be determined. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. developing in ukraine this morning the country decided it will not boycott the winter pair ra olympics in sochi. the head of the committee announced the country's athletes will stay in sochi and compete despite russia's military moves in crimea. it was announced hours before today's opening ceremony. in the next half hour tracie potts will have a live update about the crisis in ukraine including president obama's talk with his russian counter part. >> a bay area teacher under arrest accused of sexually abusing six students. david ginlto was let go last november during an investigation into sexual misconduct before being hired as a teacher at mira vista middle school also in richmond. the school board leaders insist that ginlto did undergo a

the side of the road. now the incident has cleared from the road but we see a little tiny bit of slowing down below 60 miles per hour. and i think once chp crews are on the scene, just watch the area for activity approaching the bay bridge. no problems at the toll plaza. once you cross over we still have reports of a lane blocked by a disabled vehicle at treasure island. however, sometimes make their way over to the off ramp, clearing from the roadway, the slowing we saw had cleared up over the last few minutes so i'm going to say a smoother drive into the city. stay to the left if you can as you travel through the tunnel. the rest of the bay good with green all over t freeways looking good, the tri-valley we'll call up the speeds. you're in the green zone. basically at the limit. a little slowing out of the altamont pass, that's typical even on a friday after 5:00 in the morning. the north bay, 101, a few more cars. all the way from novato to san rafael and the golden gate

5:32 am
is okay. the status of the man and woman, the parents, they were checked out at the hospital but their status is unknown. we're told that this fire, the first apartment fire, started in a kitchen here and the cause is unknown. of course that brings up the question of why another fire started just next door and that we're still looking into because when we went back there, firefighters were busy spraying water on everything so we'll ask the question why and how that one started so close nearby. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> now let's turn over to bob redell at the scene of another house fire, this time in san jose. and bob, you are now hearing that this situation will be a crime scene. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, peggy. this home here on aetna way, the area around it has been declared a crime scene by san jose fire, this happening in the past 10, 15 minutes. saying it's possibly a case of arson. they wouldn't go into detail but did tell us that the arson

5:34 am
reason, this man and woman did not activate them. they escaped through the garage which might have been the longer way out which might have exposed them to more smoke and flames. >> why wouldn't someone not acty straight emergency latch? common thing in fires? >> yeah. there was quite a bit of smoke so the victims may have been disoriented unable to find the latches. there were latches on every bedroom window. they may not have been able to locate them. the easiest way out was probably the garage door. >> reporter: you can see that garage door open there, that's where the man and woman made their escape. again, they are in the hospital with serious burns. it's our understanding according to the neighbor it was the woman who came out crying, possible burns down one side of her arm. this area on aetna way now declared a crime scene. the arson investigator believe there is is something suspicious about this fire.
