and they're off.

the filing period for the 2014 election is over and ten candidates have declared themselves candidates for san jose mayor. nbc bay area political analyst joins us now with an early assessment on the race. ten candidates. are you one of them? >> no. >> i think you and i are the only ones that are not. >> that's about it. everybody is putting their hat in because it is a wide open race. there's no question about that. you know, to handicap this kind of thing, we've got to begin with a couple of qualifiers, let's call them. first to win out right, just a little civics lesson, to win outright a candidates got to win 50% plus one. ten candidates? are you kidding me? it's not going to happen. virtually impossible in a ten person field. we're looking to see which two get the most votes for the november runoff. second point, yeah, there are ten candidates. don't want to dis any of them. five certainly are better known now than the others. for our purposes for the time being, at least, let's begin
7:48 am
focusing on those with the most name recognition z. >> okay. let's talk about them. four of them are city council members currently. >> four city council members which kind of blurs things for some people, i think. that so many are members of the city council. madison lynn. vice mayor. seventh district council member. the only person of color in the top five. that might be interesting. she defeated a recall vote a couple years ago over the little issue. she seems to have emerged stronger for it. something to look at. sam licardo. well known. former deputy district attorney. represents the 3rd district. a very important district. downtown area. he seems to be more fi philosophically aligned with the outgoing mayor, chuck reed. the top fundraiser by far at this point. something else to watch. something for everyone. then there's pierre representing the fairly affluent 6th council district. he's made police support a central cornerstone of his
7:49 am
campaign. took out a full page ad in the mercury news the other day on that issue. rose herera. city council member from the 8th district. that has a sizable latino and also sizable asian-american population. so we have to watch to see how that plays out. and then there's the person outside. that is to say the county supervisor. he's also a former city council member. so he's had his fingers in both sides of local government. now, as a county supervisor, he has a constituency much larger than any single city council district. so wow. you know, i'm a kid in a candy store here. there's a lot to choose from. >> so, it's early. three months until the election. you know, depending on which side you're on, that's a lot of time or that's not enough time. >> or if you don't have a side. you know. yeah, it's very early. we do have one poll. it's sponsored, let's disclose it here, it's sponsored by -- i checked this out personally. the methodology is pretty straightforward with one caveat.
7:50 am
it was conducted in english only. leaving out spanish and vietnamese interviews. that's something we might want to think about in a city where both groups are well represented. but that's notwithstanding, we do have some findings. you can see what happens. dave kortase is at the top. one person outside the city council. the county supervisor. followed by madison nguyen. sam licardo, the great fundraiser, hasn't transferred into votes. 10%. pierre, 8%. rose herera in fifth place at the moment at 6%. no one should panic. that leaves about 40% without any candidate at this point. you know, let's put this down to the bottom line. the race is fluid, kris. there's no other way to say it. searches for votes have just begun. one fact is clear. out of all this, we have to expect a wild finish. >> yeah. no kidding. thank you very much, larry. we will be right back. [ mom ] hi, we're the pearsons, and we love chex cereal.
7:51 am
7:52 am
so we made our own commercial to tell you why. first, chex makes lots of gluten free flavors. which is a huge thing for us. and there's seven to choose from. like cinnamon, honey nut, and chocolate. i tell them "you guys are gonna turn into chocolate chex!" i like cinnamon, greg is a honey nut nut. when you find something this good, you want to spread the word. [ all ] we're the pearsons, and we love chex!

week, we will see those temperatures climbing to the mid-70s and maybe up to 80 approaching next weekend. >> that is wild for march. seems like the spring forward got your computer, huh? >> it did. the computer is running a little bit slow. still thinks it's 6:52. >> so do i. >> see if we can get that thing going again. >> it is tricky. nice to have you up with us so early. right now girls are lining up. they're very excited about a chance to get a free prom dress. we are looking live this morning as the ladies are in their casual wear now. as they wait in line to get their formal wear. it's seven trees community center in san jose where vice mayor madison nguyen and mayoral candidate is giving away more than 3,000 dresses that were donated. the sixth annual operation prom dress will be held today from 9:00 this morning until 1:00. the goal, to make sure every girl gets a dress for prom. the rankings are out. uc berkeley can still claim to

7:57 am
all he had to do was spell the word "definition" right. d-e-f-i-n-i-t-i-o-n. definition. >> i was getting pretty sad when she got that word incorrect. it's sort of messed up that, you know, that it came to that. >> yeah. that was a bummer word to misspell. sharma is now headed to washington, d.c. for the national spelling bee competition. hoffman, again, just a fifth grader, says she'll be rooting for him. maybe she'll win next year. we want to thank you so much for making us a part of your morning. we have more local news for you tonight starting at 5:00. an hour and a half straight. then we'll wrap up the day with you at 11:00. of course, any time of day at nbcbayarea.com. have a great day and enjoy your spring forward. i was going to the library to do my homework.
