a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. 4:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news, fremont police investigating a string of small fires, two of them at local elementary schools. firefighters were first called to james leech elementary school where they discovered a portable building on fire. as they arrived a second call came in about a fire at warm springs elementary school. minutes later a third fire at warm springs park. all of these fires less than a mile apart leaving investigators to call them at least suspicious. christie smith is talking to investigators right this minute. she'll have a live report coming up. >> the threat after tsunami off the coast of northern california has passed following a 6.9 quake overnight. since it hit off the coast last night at about 10:30, 19 after shocks have shane the area. the biggest was a 4.6. late last night we spoke with

scattered showers but not a factor now at the bay bridge toll plaza. looking at our live look. but the rain is coming or at least light sprinkles so watch for all of your spots around the bay. so far across the bay we did have backup in the cash lanes that cleared up as i headed to the set. so looks like we have opened up the remaining cash lanes, a smooth drive off the maze. no major problems around the bay. as the rain comes in and the folks are adjusting to the time change you'll see a different flow to the commute. we'll see how the sunrise later affects the flow on the peninsula. back to you. >> new developments for the search for flight 370. officials scrambled to get a look at yellow debris in the gulf of thailand. there was hope it was a life raft from the missing plane. turns out to be a moss covered cap of a cable reel. in a news conference officials said while they want to know what happened, their top priority finding the plane and helping the families of the

missing 239 people on board. the plane vanished somewhere between malaysia and vietnam on the way to beijing so. far no traces of the aircraft have been found. 34 aircraft and 40 ships from eight countries including the united states have been deployed to search for the plane. >> things are moving very fast and let us pray that we get more positive results in the near future. >> as you may be aware, two passengers boarded the plane with stolen passports, officials have not ruled out a hijacking or bombing, however, officials say there is nothing to indicate a terror group was behind this. >> 4:34. this morning the man accused of shooting a san francisco police officer is waiting to find out his next court appearance. 50-year-old jeffrey ruano of san francisco was arrested after a high-speed chase that spanned four counties and ended in san jose. he is suspected of shooting

28-year-old san francisco police officer adam shaw during a traffic stop on saturday. officials expect shaw to make a full recovery. ruano is charged with assault, being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition and evading police. >> the man who pleaded no contest to trying to molest children is going back to court to try to change his plea. bradley pleaded no contest to kidnapping, committing lewd acts and attempted child pornography in exchange for 27 years in prison. no contest pleas do not admit guilt but acknowledge prosecutors have enough evidence to win in court. he is accused of dragging a girl out of a san mateo elementary school last year, trying to take pictures of several girls in a bathroom in 2012, now he says his lawyer did a poor job of advising him. he tried to withdraw his plea last week but the judge needed more time to consider it. we'll hear from the judge this morning.

>> a lawmaker will announce legislation requiring electric companies to come up with ways to protect the grid from attacks like last year's attack. he wants security plans to help prevent attacks. he wants them to be able to isolate attacks so other parts of the community are not affected while trying to restore power faste. 17 transformers were knocked out and telephone cables cut during the attack on the metcalf substation. officials have not determined whether it was a terrorist attack or an act of vandalism. senator hill calls the attack a wake-up call. >> with the oakland a's future home in doubt. we know the a's will be at o.co for the 2014-15 season. if the team doesn't extend the lease the team may host games at

san jose municipal stadium t home of the minor league san jose giants. it holds 4500 people. a fraction of the coliseum. in the past seven years the a's have seen a lot of growth in ticket sales. last year an average of 22,000 people went to each game at o.co. >> it would be uncomfortable. definitely. it would feel like we're playing in modesto again. >> it would be a temporary solution until the a's make a move to a new ball park. the team considering building a temporary venue near the earthquake new stadium. if they build it people will come. >> certainly. especially for baseball. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren, light showers for our morning start. >> yeah, good morning. welcome back, laura. happy monday to you at home. we do have shower this is morning, we still need the rain so it's a great thing to wake up with this. the only thing is it could lead to a slower than normal commute. we're going to keep tabs on that. mike is on top of it.

right now the steadiest rain is in sonoma county into marin county. we're dry south of the golden gate bridge. that will be the case in the next hour or so. more shower activity will spread throughout the morning hours. you can see that here from futurecast. most of that activity located right over livermore, san jose, gilroy, getting a break at that point from santa rosa to san francisco. as we continue throughout the day today, that sunshine comes right back out. good air quality. a good looking week shaping up. right into the forecast. right now as promised here is mike inouye. >> all right. good morning folks. we're looking toward 580 westbound, that's the commute direction with the headlights, and it's a smooth drive past el charo. it looks like a lot of light but this is what we see almost every monday about this time so we have a smooth flow where the arrow is. whoops. no dra pla around the area. we showed you with the camera, so you see green throughout the livermore approach to to the

dublin interchange. the yellow down to 60 miles per hour. not a major concern. no incidents eastbound through castro valley or the dublin grade. the road crews not there from sunday to monday night. that's a good flow of traffic throughout the south bay. we'll give you a look for the upper peninsula and easy drive into and out of san francisco through san mateo, the 280 drive up into san francisco itself. palo alto, lower peninsula here, a live look at the cameras, traffic moves nicely. watch this stretch for 101 into palo alto out of menlo park and 280 around the pend to los altos, gets the morning sun. now it's going to be about 7:30 to 8:00 with the time shift. we're watching for this. san rafael, the north bay no problems in the southbound direction. you're going to get early sprinkles, then rain south of santa rosa, north of the golden gate bridge for now. not a major concern through san rafael. >> thanks for a reminder of the time change too. yes, it's 4:39.

we feel it. b.a.r.t. could come to the south bay sooner. construction on the project is a full year ahead of schedule. it should be done by 2017. officials say work has been fast because the new tracks will run along the old union pacific tracks making them easier to build. right now tracks are 50% complete through fremont, the warm springs station is being built and a tunnel is actually done. >> it's 4:40. the race for san jose mayor heats up. our political analyst will weigh in on what he sees happening in the june election. >> we'll hear from edward snowden this morning as he prepares to give a speech at the south bay southwest festival. >> a skydiver suddenly hit by a small plane. we'll hear from him next.

francisco police officer is recovering this morning after a high-speed chase that really ended up in a shooting. the suspect has been arrested in san jose, one we're following this morning. he is i believe in stable condition and recovering. 4:44. the race for san jose mayor set with ten candidates vying for the top job, all of them are democrats, four are current city council members. madison nguyen, sam liccardo, oliverio and rose herrera all bidding to replace current mayor chuck reed. also in the top five candidates former councilman and supervisor dave cortese. larry swat t-- the there is likely a runoff. >> you don't have to come in one, come in two. but you got to come in the top two. we saw our first poll, 40%

undecided. the election three months away. so many don't know is there an election in june. >> in a poll of likely voters sponsored by several unions cortese leads with 19% of likely voters fold by the vice mayor madison nguyen. it was conducted in english. >> the trouble continues for general motors this morning as federal investigators try to figure out why the car company and the government knew about the ignition switch problem since 2004 but doesn't seem to have done anything about. 13 people died as a result. steama mody live with more on that. good morning. >> scott, good morning. u.s. safety regulators received more than 260 complaints over 11 years about gm vehicles suddenly turning off while driving, but declined to investigate the issue. gm which first learned of the faulty ignition switches in 2004 says the problem is now linked

"the new york times" says the safety administration started receiving an average of two complaints a month in 2003 but repeatedly said there wasn't enough evidence to warrant an investigation. now take a look at the markets. futures lower across the board as stocks come off a positive week, though they closed mixed on friday following that better than expected jobs report. toz the fifth anniversary of the bull market after the dow, nasdaq and the s&p 500 hit multiyear lows on march 9 of 2009. but analysts say fewer than a third of bull markets made it through a sixth straight year. new data out today but look for reports on retail sales and consumer sentiment. the dow rising on friday t nasdaq slipping by 16. we're following google's smart phones now the company wants to be the backbone for wearable devices.

pistorius's security guard said he called to check on him after neighbors reported hearing gun shots, he says pistorius told him everything was fine but then moments later he called back, crying, his statement could back the prosecution's case that the killing was premeditated. pistorius trying to hide something he had done. but the defense presented call records that show that pistorius called first. the guard maintains the records are incorrect. >> public safety officials will reveal the new plans for the boston marathon. authorities have been working on the plan since last year's deadly attack when two bombs exploded killing three people, injuring more than 260 others. we know spectators and runners can expect security check points, hundreds of additional officers and bomb sniffing dogs. >> in a few hours edward snowden will speak. snowed hoon is appearing via

the parachute. you can see how close the propeller will come to the skydiver's body. the skydiver was about 75 feet off the ground when a small cessna runs right through the strings of his parachute. the plane took a nose dive, surprisingly the skydiver says he's not afraid to skydive again. >> you know, i will keep sky diving. it's one of the safest sports you can do. there is no more risk than playing football. >> both the skydiver and the pilot suffered minor injuries. the "today" show is going to have a lot more about this coming up. >> interesting to hear from him. barry bonds back on the field and back in a giants uniform. what he is doing at spring training next. >> a live look outside. a little misty, nice moonlighting style shot over the bay bring. rain's coming in. we'll talk about the north bay.
