talking to investigators. she will have a live update. >> the man accused of shooting a san francisco police officer finally arrested after an hours long search and a chaotic chase that spanned four bay area counties. police wrestled the man to the ground at a south bay gas station. the latest details in a live report. >> what we're now learning about a crash that spilled hundreds of gallons of gas on a major south bay freeway. >> hopefully you are dealing with that time change this morning in a good way. we do have showers on the radar this morning. new week, new forecast. i'll tell you how to dress all week long coming up. >> we're looking here, a little blurrier look from the oakland coliseum, traffic flows, the moisture in the air. what i see coming up. >> we're all a little blurry this morning because it feels like 4:00 a.m. but it's 5:00 a.m., monday, march 10th and this is "today in the bay."
5:01 am
isn't that the truth. >> yes. hope you remembered to spring ahead over the weekend. good morning. it's 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have breaking news this morning, investigators in fremont looking to three fires at three separate locations, two of them at different elementary schools, flames broke out hours ago at james leech elementary. warm springs elementary and warm springs park. christie smith is live at the park where a restroom was damaged. christie, police looking for an arsonist? >> reporter: they are. these three fires, they believe were deliberately set and set from the outside of the building. we did just go and check out the bathroom. didn't see as much damage there but we moved down the street to warm springs elementary. the reason we did that this is where fire investigators are focusing their attention. this is the snack shack by the
5:02 am
baseball field at warm springs elementary. what they are doing is looking to see if there was accelerant left that the location or the other two locations, all essentially on the same street, may be a half mile apart including james leech elementary school. firefighters just told me that there was a ymca portable that was on fire overnight, a person called 911. there was also an alarm sounding from the school. another call came in at warm springs elementary, a snack shack was burning, the one we just showed you live and also a tree caught fire. then another call came in, and this came at the same time when police were driving around, they were helping to respond to this. i spoke with one sergeant who said that he thought the bathroom birning at warm springs park. all three believed the work of an arsonist. they believe that the warm springs elementary school location, that may have started first and then this person
5:03 am
whoever set these may have headed north. now, if you look at the addresses they do have different street addresses but essentially one side of them all open up to the same street. back at this location where the snack shack is. what police are telling me this same snack shack burned several months ago. they didn't have an exact date but saying that one was deliberately set. but it wasn't part of a series like this one. so again, at this point what they are doing is when people wake up, trying to see if they find witnesses, any one who heard or saw anything unusual. they don't have suspect information, no one reported seeing any one running from the scene. only reports of smoke. you can see quite a bit of damage and investigators working hard to look for any sort of accelerant, that sort of thing. the latest from here. live in fremont. >> pretty active morning. thanks so much. >> the man suspected of shooting and injuring a san francisco police officer behind bars.
5:04 am
he was arrested yesterday after leading police on a high-speed chase through four counties. damian trujillo is live at the gas station on mckee road where the man was arrested. we could see surveillance video of the arrest today? >> reporter: yeah. the owner shows up at 6:00 this morning hoping to get some footage from him. it ended behind me at this gas and shop on mckee road in san jose after a wild night, saturday night and early sunday morning in san francisco. police say 50-year-old jeffrey ruano shot at police after a routine traffic stop in the mission district. the officer's partner was able to fire back before the suspect sped away. they couldn't find him for some time but then police said a tip led them to a white mercedes and the chase was on. everything could be heard on scanner traffic from the actual shooting to the chase itself. it ended up here in san jose when officers stopped ruano at
5:05 am
gunpoint, handcuffed along with two others in the car with him. he is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a felon in possession of ammunition, and evading police. police describe part of the chase. >> attempted to stop that vehicle in the area of eastbound interstate 80, and the richmond area, and that vehicle failed to stop and evaded police. >> reporter: we should point out police did not find a gun on ruano and it's not clear if the shots that injured the officer came from him. police also say they believe they have the right suspect in custody, and are not looking for anyone else. this morning in connection with that shooting. so priority today as the officer is expected to be okay, priority should be for police in finding that gun. live in san jose, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> a person shot overnight in the south bay is recovering this

elementary, warm springs elementary and warm springs park all within a few hundred feet of each other. christie smith is live in fremont this morning. christie, you have new information how this could impact students. >> reporter: yes. we're hearing at least one of the portables at james leech elementary will be impacted and that's because there was a fire on the outside, a firefighter told me he thought it was used by the ymca as a daycare or after school. but he wouldn't be usable today. as you said these are three fires about a half mile apart, all on the same street, i wanted to show you some of the worst damage. this is at warm springs elementary school. it is the snack shack near the baseball field on fernol. investigators believe the ones i spoke w saying that this series of fires started after 2:00 this morning. another one may be 100 yards away from where we are, the warm springs park bathroom, that one was also heavily damaged
5:31 am
overnight as well. and then another one as we were talking about earlier, that was at james leech elementary school. there was fire alarm that went off, and also some neighbors called in a report that they smelled smoke over there. that was in a portable unit there and what investigators tell me they had to cut a support beam in that portable so it won't be usable today. the exact order of these fires is unclear because they happened so fast. in fact, a sergeant with fremont police department responding to one fire said he noticed another one burning. >> both of the calls for the two separate fires were one minute apafrmt we started suspecting possible arson because of the close proximity. once i arrived i started looking around to worse case scenario there would be an additional one, that's when i happened to notice there was actually a third fire going on at the same time. >> reporter: at daylight they are going to be canvassing this

5:34 am
>> the chp attempted to stop that vehicle in the area of eastbound interstate 80 and the richmond area, and that vehicle failed to stop and evaded police. >> reporter: ruano is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a felon in possession of ammunition, and evading police. we should point out police did not find a gun on ruano. it's not clear if the shot that injured the officer came from ruano. they are doing tests to make sure they put their ducks in order and find out if in fact ruano was the shooter in this case. that's the latest from san jose. >> thank you. >> 5:34. the man who pleaded no contest to trying to molest several children on the peninsula going back to durt change his plea. bradley rosek pleaded no
