flames broke out hours ago at james leech elementary, warm springs elementary, and warm springs park. christie smith is live in fremont. you're hearing one of the buildings on campus won't be in use today. >> reporter: yes. good morning to you. that's right. we're talking about the portable building at james leech elementary which is up the road from where we're standing. we're behind warm springs elementary school. this is actually an outbuilding behind the baseball field that suffered some of the worst damage. what investigators are telling us is with all of these three fires the 911 calls came in only about a minute apart. investigators believe that this building, the smoke may have drifted down the street from this one and started some of the calls coming in. james leech elementary alarms started going off around 2:42 this morning at a portable classroom. firefighters tell me that it started on the outside and they had to cut one of the support

beams on the building because of the fire and it's used by the ymca. normally that building won't be in use today. a sergeant with fremont police responding actually noticed another fire overnight at the warm springs park in a bathroom burning. another one t one where we are by warm springs elementary. police telling us that students don't really use this, it's more for little league. all three on the same street. >> at this point in the investigation we believe the fires to have been -- caused by arson and we are still working to develop leads at this point trying to locate witnesses, we don't have any at this point. we'll do some follow-up to try to develop more leads. we don't have a suspect. >> reporter: they tell us that they are going to be trying to speak with neighbors about what they may have seen or heard overnight. they do tell us that the baseball shed here behind home

plate actually caught fire before recently, they couldn't give us the exact date but tell us in that case they believe it was deliberately set so certainly they are going to look into whether this is related to the three that happened overnight. >> we have new details to tell you about a magnitude 6.9 quake that rattled the northern california coast overnight. at least 20 aftershocks have shake at any coast include twog.9 in the last hour near eureka since 10:30 last night. the biggest was 4.6. there is no threat of a tsunami and seems people in the area are taking it in stride with no damage, no injuries to report as well. some grocery stores reported items falling off the shelves. >> a san francisco police officer is recovering after being shot in the shoulder in the mission district.

a live look at san francisco general hospital. we've seen scores of officers as well as family members come and go out of the hospital all weekend. the suspect now under arrest after leading police on a long chase through four counties from the east bay down to the south bay. damian trujillo is live at this gas station where police put the suspect in cuffs. >> he showed me a cell phone video of the arrest, you can hear somebody screaming. it was a wild and crazy night. he doesn't want to share that video with us yet until his boss shows up which should be any minute now. it started on saturday night, early sunday morning. 50-year-old jeffrey ruano shot at police after a routine traffic stop in the mission district. another officer was able to fire back before the suspect sped away. they couldn't find him for some time but then a tip led theme a

white mercedes and the chase was on. everything could be heard from actual shooting to the chase itself. it ended up in san jose near 101 when officers stopped ruano at gunpoint. he's being charged with assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of ammunition and evading police. police described part of that chase. >> he attempted to stop that vehicle in the area of eastbound interstate 80, and the richmond area. that vehicle failed to stop and evaded police. >> police are still looking for the condition used in the shooting. it's not clear if the shot that injured the officer came from ruano. they will check for gunpowder res do on his hand.

showers starting to intensify. san francisco getting hit with moderate rainfall all of this headed to the ra rena district. it's going to get heavier where you are. and as i widen out you can see the main front right now located between richmond, all the way south to san francisco. that's where it's draped. oyts going to continue to move in. by about 6:41 we expect that in union city. you're going to deal with it for the next three hours. we'll clear out about 10:00 a.m. the new sunrise, i want to point this out, 730 a.m., i hope you're doing okay. we lost that hour of sleep. no fun. fortunately we're going to be darker for longer. watch out for little ones, it's going to be dark. afternoon clearing, unseasonably warm, here is the good news it

index. where you're going to get slicker conditions. looking pretty good now so far. we'll zoom into a couple of spots and talk about here, west 580 with a change. north 238 coming off of the castro valley eye. a nice drive. i circled the area which talked about three fires. mission boulevard to the north and not affected by the activity. we have a smooth flow but it's building connecting between 880 and 680. the south bay shows a typical build. up to 880 itself. the rest of the northbound routes. as far as the speeds are concerned a shake to the camera, glow to the lights, mist coming in and headlights southbound we'll get slowdown later after 730, maybe 8:00. we'll be hit wealth this morning

officer is making a quick recovery in the hospital. he was shot during a traffic stop on saturday. officers arrested the suspect after a high-speed chase that ended in san jose. >> barry bonds will be back in a giants uniform helping out as a hitting coach. in the seven years since retirement bonds has mostly stayed away from the game. >> this morning crews are expanding a search area as they look for the missing malaysia airlines plane. let's check in with bob redell. >> searchers will start looking on land. specifically in malaysia. while they will continue the water search. in the past hour searchers spotted some debris. ships on the way. earlier they did spot an object but it was a moss covered cable reel unrelated to malaysian flight 370. and the oil slick spotted test

results indicate it's not related. >> we have not found anything that appears to be objects from the aircraft, let alone the aircraft. we will be intensifying our efforts to locate the missing aircraft. >> that is the head of malaysia's authority calling this an unprecedented mystery given the fact that they have not been able to locate this aircraft. one school of sthaut that it disintegrated in flight on the way to beijing. authorities are looking at several possibilities, one being engine failure, turbulence, pilot error, suicide, an explosion. another possible scenario, hijacking. two passengers did board with stolen passports.

there is no reported chatter between terrorist groups or claims of responsibility. this has been a grueling time for relatives of the 239 people on board the flight to beijing. they are growing angry, accusing malaysian airlines of not doing enough to help them. >> tragic for them. thank you, mike. >> peru will extradite van der sloot but not until 2038. van der sloot is the dutch man accused of murdering convicted rather of killing a peru woman. peru says he has to serve out his 28-year murder sentence before he is sent to the united states. van der sloot was investigated as a suspect in the disappearance of an american teen natalee holloway in aruba. american authorities accuse him of extorting money from holloway's mother. >> the mexican government says it is 100% sure it has killed a

major drug lord. a federal prosecutor says fingerprints confirm the death of gonzalez killed in a shootout. mexico declared him dead once before after another gun battle with authorities back in 2010 even though in that case authorities did not find his body. >> a reporter for nbc says a bucket has been brought into the courtroom for oscar pistorius allegedly getting sick over descriptions of reeva steenkamp's autopsy. the judge said publicizing the testimony could compromise the dignity of the deceased. the guard says he called pistorius after neighbors reported hearing gun shots but the defense presented call records that show pistorius called the security first. the guard says the records are wrong. >> it's 6:17. security will be heavy at this year's boston marathon. we'll have a better idea what

changes are in store. law enforcement and race organizers will detail plans at a news conference. we know about some of the changes, unregistered runners will not be allowed and no one will be allowed to carry backpacks, instead runners will be given clear plastic bags and spectators will go through several security check points. last year three were killed and more than 260 others injured after two bombs exploded near the finish line of the race. one of the suspects was killed in the standoff with police, the other is in federal custody awaiting trial. >> let's take a live look at san jose. we'll check your forecast. a look at downtown san jose. and did i hear you correctly? about that number? >> 90s. i know. it's absolutely bizarre. but this morning it's 60 degrees out there. we've got heavy rainfall simultaneously coming down, and yeah, we're going to see the 90s. here is the kicker.

after we get through with this warm-up all the way through the weekend, there's more rain on the way to the bay area. yeah. that's exactly right. i'm concerned about when that time approaches when we don't have more rain chances or as we like to call them meteorologists, pops, percentage of precipitation. soy can tell you right now things are looking pretty good. we've got this rain shower activity coming in pretty steadily from san rafael south to about burlingame, this is going to continue to press inland the next couple hours. not all of the bay area is getting wet but we all will and this is going to leave maybe a quarter inch to a half inch of rainfall in kers that it passes through. you can see it's not moving quickly. that's good news. as it makes its way through the south bay it will start to fall apart. we'll take whatever we can get. by 8:00 a.m. between now and 8: 8:00, the heaviest moisture will come through. we'll continue to clear out throughout the day, stop at 2:00 p.m., mostly sunny conditions

for the rest of the day. and then the warming trend kicks in. so 85 degrees is about as high as i'm taking it in the south bay. we'll see places like livermore and tri-valley easily hitting the low 90s by the end of the week. we can hit the beach. we get to do that in the bay area. 65 in san francisco, 70 in the east bay, 68 degrees in the south bay. comfortable conditions this afternoon with clearing and yeah, it's going to be clear, beautiful conditions. we do have a little drought improvement. we'll continue to update you each day as we know this is of high importance to a lot of people including our mike inouye. >> definitely. this is our live shot. you show the sheen and the water kind of kicking up. there is enough to cause wet roadways and water kicking u. westbound 580 as you pass by el charo and approaching tasahara. chp reports a dump truck

reported with a fire in the engine compartment that was supposed to be in this area. i have scanned it and i don't see lanes blocked but i see a lot of headlights. that's typical and we see that, slow down approaching outside of our camera view. this may be what's going on on the right shoulder. the latest update says watch it, there are a couple of lanes blocked in the westbound commute direction heading over to livermore and the dublin interchange. the car or truck fire blocking a couple lanes from what we understand as crews start to arrive. we'll watch that and the slick roads. and we see the backup forming into livermore. this makes things at the dublin interchange lighter but 680 showing slowdown. the rest moving smoothly, nothing unusual. we'll zoom in to a couple of key spots. the south bay, northbound starting to kick in. this is later than we typically

electronic monitoring system now in the works to scan the behavior of 5 million federal employees with secret clearances. u.s. intelligence sources tell the press that this system is meant to identify rogue agents and leakers. tracie potts joins us live in washington, d.c. this morning. this report comes out as edward snowden gets ready to do a video chat at a tech conference. >> reporter: exactly. he's not stepping foot in the united states, he is wanted on felony charges for leaking all of that information about the nsa, but edward snowden on a big screen today in texas, in austin. a teleconference where he is expected to talk about privacy and government surveillance, mass surveillance programs like the ones he leaked. you were talking about the ap report. turns out the government wants to step up its efforts to snoop on itself on its own employees, the 5 million people who have

of russia. the parliament issued a vote on sunday. >> let's talk about your forecast as we give you a live look at the bay bridge and the light this is morning. it is an early morning for all of us. it feels like 5:33. it is 6:33. >> a little more concealer this morning. >> i'm trying to get my brain to work. it's hard when you lose that hour of sleep. and you know, what it's dark out there. it's going to be more dangerous for the morning drive as well. a lot of people like to bike to work so you want to stay alert and watch for those changes. as we head throughout the day today we're going to see a longer day, temperatures are going to be comfortable. the 70s, sunset, 7:10 in the evening. so yeah, we should have a longer day to get your activities done. if you are up at this hour chances are you get off early. we have showers starting to intensify along the bay bridge. over all a lot of this activity is going to move through

quickly. the front is sweeping through san francisco to san mateo but we're dry all the way into the south bay for the time being. this is going to start to move in. through the next few hours and then it's out of here. about as quickly as it came in. showers until about 10:00 a.m. after that afternoon clearing, unseasonably warm. lots of sunshine across the bay area. a beautiful day. our hills are finally green. i'm going to show you a comparison in my next report. how it looked about a month ago versus today. your mind might be blown. it's beautiful out there. 7:10 p.m., coast of clouds return, then we're done with the rain about a week. we have a warm-up headed our way. when we expect those records to start breaking. >> i'm embarrassed to say this is a horrible shot but i wanted to show you the flashing lights. i zoomed in. it's a little blurry, there is

moisture in the air, mist on the roadway and those flashing lights are blocking your one lane as you head through the construction zone. so one lane is blocked over westbound 580, just approaching fallon and tasahara. that's a slow 580 drive, one lane is blocked by the dump truck on fire. the build-up continues but we have an easy drive developing because of the folks that are held up by that distraction and the one lane lost. southbound 680 slows and that's going to send more through livermore and pleasanton. the rest of the bay behaving pretty normally for monday though we're seeing a little bit of a shift with the change in time we see people change their commute so we're seeing a later build. speeds now down the east shore freeway t 40s and a little blow and approaching the berkeley

welcome back. it is 6:40. for the first time we're hearing from the father of sandy hook elementary school shooter adam lanza. adam shot and killed himself after killing six staffers and 20 young children at the school in newtown, connecticut back in december 2012. he also shot and killed his mother nancy. in an interview with "the new yorker" magazine, peter lanza says, quote, with hindsight i know adam would have killed me in a heartbeat if he had the

chance. peter lanza says his son talked with many mental health professionals but none saw violent tendencies in his personalities. he says he thinks about his son and the massacre every hour. he says, quote, you can't get any more evil. how much do i beat up myself about the fact he's my son. a lot. peter lanza says he was able to read cards and letters sent on the one year anniversary of the shooting. he has offered to meet with victims of the shooting and two families have taken him up on that saying it's gut wrenching. a family member told me they forgave adam. i didn't know how to respond, a person that lost their son, their only son. >> well, it's 6:41. coming up an update to breaking news overnight. fires at a school and baseball field and nearby park. we'll tell you what activities may be shut down for the day. >> barry bonds back on the field for the giants. new details about the spring

park. christie smith live in fremont. not a welcome sight for students this morning. >> reporter: no, not at all. but you know, when you look at this portable you don't see a lot of damage from the outside. if you look to the far right you can see a little bit of where firefighters went in to attack this fire. there is also a broken window there. i did take a look inside, there are a couple people cleaning up. what they tell me they have to do is move before and after school care into the multipurpose room and carry on there because there's just -- it isn't usable inside. the maintenance worker also here told me he was going to make another call to police because he noticed that a bulletin board outside the main office here at james leech elementary school was burned and he didn't know if firefighters saw that when they first arrived when the alarm sounded around 2:42 letting them know a portable was on fire.

you probably don't need the heavy coat but what you need the first part of the day is the umbrella along the east shore. we have pretty steady rainfall right now. all the way from piedmont down through alameda, some pretty heavy rainfall. you'll see this located over the greater bay area. give yourself extra time. this moved through the north bay and san francisco though it's clearing out right now. starting to press into south bay. we have wet conditions everywhere. you don't want to race out the front door with conditions like this. it could be a slower than normal drive. throughout the day, though, we're going to lose showers by about 1:00 p.m. in the north bay, clear conditions and 69 degrees. 65 in san francisco, 68 degrees in the south bay. clear by about 3:00 p.m. with clouds. and i want to show you how helpful this rainfall has been. so this is morgan hill. i shot this picture from a wedding at the end of january. so yesterday i returned to morgan hill and look at the

see more folks hitting. cutting through pleasanton and livermore as an alternate. they join up with 680 and that leaves a little for the folks traveling southbound, 680 through pleasanton as they get used to the flashing lights and the lanes move more smoothly we'll see more traffic build-up. a smoother drive through the south bay. we have your northbound route 101 and for 85 now kicking in as far as the slow spot. 87 around curtner and 280 around 17 and 880. that's a typical pattern for the south bay. we'll see that shift sort itself out because of that hour we lose in the time change going on. we're looking at the upper peninsula, a smooth drive in the green north of san mateo into and out of san francisco. a live look in the area as well. this is palo alto, northbound shows a smooth flow heading up to willow avenue. it's the southbound side here through palo alto out of menlo park you get that sunrise slowdown. it's going to hit an hour later

days since flight 370 vanished and still no confirmed signs of that 777 aircraft. authorities are expanding the search to include land areas of malaysia, while they will continue to search in the south china sea. there are new reports of debris south of saigon. they did spot a yellow object floating off vietnam but turned out to be nothing. the oil slick found over the weekend, test results indicate it's not related. it's possible the plane disintegrated, they haven't ruled out causes, engine failure, turbulence, pilot error or suicide, even hijacking. two did board with stolen passports, one taken from a man in italy surprised to hear any one was able to use his old passport. >> it may be some people steal my passport and i seen my

sergeant kay houden from the police department who says she felt the ground roll for at least a minute. >> we didn't get reports of damage, no reports of injury yet. some furniture fell over, so far that's been it. >> some stores also reported items falling off shelves but nothing serious. there is also no threat of a tsunami. >> a person shot in the south bay recovering this morning, deputies say just before 10:00 last night a person was shot near the intersection of south white road and e hill drive. the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the shooting under investigation. >> investigators in san francisco trying to figure out how a police officer was shot during a traffic stop in the city's mission district. a live look at san francisco general hospital where that officer adam shaw is recovering. in the meantime, police arrested a suspect who led them on a long

chase through four counties after trying to ram shaw with his car. damian trujillo is live where police put the suspect in cuffs. >> reporter: good morning. it ended behind me early sunday morning. the gasoline at this gas and shop on mckee near 101. police arrested a 50-year-old suspect, in this case jeffrey ruano. they say he is a man who fired at san francisco police during a routine traffic stop in the mission district. the officer was able to radio for help and another officer fired at the suspect. but he got away. police could not find the shooter for some time but a tip led them to a white mercedes and the chase was on. the incident from the shooting to the chase could be heard on scanner traffic. police laid a spike strip for the car in san jose and officers arrested ruano without a shot fired. two others inside the car with him were detained but later

released. police describe portions of their chase. >> chp attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of eastbound 80 in the richmond area. that vehicle failed to stop and evaded police. >> reporter: ruano is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a felon in possession of ammunition and evading police. we should point out that police did not find a gun on ruano. it's not clear if the shot that injured the officer came from ruano. police are looking for the gun. damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you. it's 6:56. an uninsured driver left a tanker company holding the bag after a crash. that truck overturned on highway 101 last month spilling hundreds of gallons of gas on the road. and a drainage ditch. it closed for hours.

william tank lines have paid $27,000 for cleanup costs and expects to pay more. last month investigators say a speeding car slammed into the center divide and into the tanker causings it to flip over. initial report shows the driver of the car at fault but is unlicensed and uninsured. >> the b.a.r.t. project is a year ahead of schedule. according to mr. road show the project should be done by 2017. officials say work has been fast because the new tracks run along the old union pacific tracks and makes them easier to build. they are half complete through free don't. the station being built and the tunnel in fremont done. >> barry bonds will be back in a point tos uniform. he is doing a guest stit as a hitting coach in scottsdale.
