>> a live look outside and all of the talk about the weekend. it's only tuesday, march 11th, and this is "today in the bay." good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> you should say you are donny downer. i'm laura garcia-cannon. it's 5:00 now. we begin with new developments in the search for the malaysia airlines jet. in the past hour police identified the second person they say boarded that ill-fated flight with a stolen passport. bob is following the new details. he joins us now with more on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. interpol released a statement saying they are more and more convinced that these men are probably not terrorists. both are from iran, both traveled using their iranian passports, then switched to the stolen passports aboard flight

370 to beijing. this is an image of one of the two. this is della resa, from iran. interpol wonder he was spongeled or trafficked, hence the reason for the stolen passport. the other man is 19-year-old eouria mhrdad, his final destination was supposed to be frankfurt where his mom was waiting. she contacted police when he didn't show up, helped identify him. authorities believe he was using the stolen passport in attempt to seek asylum in germany. they don't believe he has ties to terrorist groups but they are not ruling out the possibility that someone else tried to bring down flight 370. >> we are looking into four areas. one is hijacking, two, sabotage, three, psychological problem of the passengers and crew, and four, personal problem among the

passengers and the crew. >> as for an earlier statement there were five who checked in but did not board the flight, police say that is not true. there were, however, four passenger who is booked that flight but never checked in, never checked bags on the airplane. the search area for the missing aircraft has expanded to include lands in malaysia and waters on the country's western coastline. reporting live in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> national safety investigators back out at an east bay refinery a second incident there injured workers in less than a month. two contractors were doing plan maintenance at the refinery near martinez when they were splashed with acid. one worker has been released from the hospital, the other still receiving treatment. he was covered in acid just last month, two workers were burned by acid in the exact same refinery. they both survived. the federal safety board wants

to investigate both incidents but says it has not received cooperation from the refinery. >> a follow-up, investigators waiting to talk to the san francisco police officer shot in the arm while responding to a call in the mission district over the weekend. they are hoping adam shaw can shed some light into what happened. shooting led to a manhunt through four counties and ended in arrest at a san jose gas station. police say the suspect had bullets in his pockets but no gun. they are trying to figure out if he shot the officer or if shaw was hit by friendly fire. shaw's partner fired several times as the suspect's car started backing up toward them. >> a follow-up, stolen bay area utility truck has been found but there is no sign of the worker's i.d. or tools or gear. someone stole the truck last thursday, it was found abandoned in castro valley yesterday. officials say if someone claiming to be from the east bay

municipal utility district shows up at your house ask for an i.d. and make sure the person matches the picture. homeland security has joined the alameda county sheriff's department in this investigation. >> more than 24 hours after 6.9 earthquake struck off eureka the region continues to get hit by after shocks. the latest recorded was a 2.9 but there have been some as large as 4.6. yesterday, 6.9 was caught on surveillance video in a store in eureka. you can see shaking, some items eventually -- was that a possum or a dog? some items fall off the shelves, coming up in a bit you saw that little something run down the aisle as well. the police department says there were no reports of serious damage or injuries. >> the days may be numbered for an iconic san jose theater that served nearly half a century. marianne joins us with the

latest efforts to save this. >> reporter: a lot of mist here, scott. good morning. this century 21 theater is street show its last movie march 31, then close its doors for good at the end of april. this is the oldest of the three domed theaters located across the street from santana row. century 21 opened in 1964, an old newspaper ad highlighted the grand opening. nearly five decades later the owners want to strike a deal that would likely destroy the dome. the preservation action council is working to preserve all three domes but especially the oldest, century 21. the executive director talked to us last week. >> the architecture and the time period that it represented and the architecturally intact. it has been changed very little from the time. it was representative of that period. >> reporter: city council member pete constant is not convinced. >> i don't think there really is

any purpose in preserving that theater. whether you look at it from a historic point of view, let's face it, it's younger than i am and i'm 50 years old. >> reporter: so far the preservation action council has collected more than 5,000 signatures for people who support saving the dome. tonight san jose's historic landmarks commission will look at a proposal to designate the dome a historical landmark and provide comments for the state historical resources commission which meets in pacific grove on april 22nd. the ultimate goal here, however, is to designate this theater as a national historical landmark but even if that does happen that does not guarantee that the dome will be saved. reporting live in san jose, "today in the bay." >> thank you. remember, you see a dome at saratoga and hamilton, that's gone. i drove by the other day. >> like a lot of things. i want to check in with

meteorologist christina loren. the umbrellas. >> put them away for a good week. we're tracking showers as we head through the end of the month, but we're going to see a warming trend that really kicks in for this weekend. we know you want to get outdoors on your weekend so i'm going to help you make plans. go ahead and plan on finding water if you can. the beach is going to be beautiful. 55 degrees now in san jose, 55 oakland, 58 in san francisco. as you are planning your day trying to get to work, you've got to work for that weekend, you can see here your drive is pretty good as far as low clouds go. it's breezy through the hills. all of the details from moment but i wanted to show you daypart for palo alto. temperatures climbing to about 62 by lunch time. you're going to ramp up to 72 along the peninsula so that's a pretty warm day along the peninsula. also everything is blooming out there so pollen levels are creeping up. keep that in mind if you suffer from the allergies of the season. 69 in san francisco, 74 in the

east bay today and 72 degrees in the south bay. that's room temperature. that means you can give your heater a break. you won't need the ac until maybe this weekend because you'll see on the seven-day forecast the bottom of the screen temperatures keep on climbing. look at san francisco, by tomorrow we're in the low 70s in the city, we're well in mid-70s by friday. we could see 80 degrees in san francisco by saturday and sunday. so make sure you've got that spring wardrobe ready though we don't kick off spring for another nine days. you're keeping track, mike, as you always do. >> that seersucker suit. the bay bridge, christina, look at this. the camera trembles a bit. our rooftop camera shows you the bay bridge is moving smoothly but chp said we have a couple of gusts so you want to be careful as you travel between the city and the oakland side. wind advisory by chp but not the national weather service. we're looking at a smooth drive here to the rest of the east bay and no problems on the east

francisco, president obama will add the 1600-acre property to the california coastal national monument today. the azigs the first time the monument will include a piece of the shore since being established 14 years ago to protect coastal resources. >> meantime, a bay area national recreation area has a distinction of being the most visited in 2013. the national park service says 14.3 million people visited the golden gate national recreation area which includes alcatraz and muir woods, better than the country's 400 other national parks. >> 5:10. dozens of homes, two schools evacuated in southern california after high levels of lead found in the soil. what crews are doing. >> a major drug store chain facing a huge fine after pills were stolen from four of its northern california stores. like data on whole sale trade and earnings, and american eagle outfitters t dow dropping 34 in yesterday's trade, the nasdaq slipping by one. a lot of tech today. microsoft is releasing it's anticipated sci-fi game for the x box 1 with thousands of launch events all over the world. microsoft hoping that it will shoot life into x box sales which have been lagging. i got to ask are you -- do you play these? >> do you have to ask? yes. absolutely. absolutely. >> obviously you do. you are a tech master. >> well, and i -- yes. i'm a tech master. steama, thank you. i do play these games but x box one, not so sure we need it. >> a game player. 5:15. officials have come wake-up a plan to save millions of salmon from the drought. dry riverbeds make it impossible for young hatchery salmon to travel to the ocean. they plan to truck in more than

start. as we head throughout the morning it's going to be fantastic once that sun starts to make an appearance. wing spekt a sunrise at 7:31 this morning. beautiful clear sky today. lots of sunshine. 10 to 15 degrees above average. so make sure you pull out the spring wardrobe. ladies it's like you get a new wardrobe. tuck away the winter items. it's going to be clear through the evening and temperatures are going to climb pretty rapidly, then fall as quickly as they shoot up because we've got a dry air mass overhead and a clear sky so. if you are headed out beyond 7:30 have a jacket with you. temperatures today 69 in san francisco, north bay at 72 degree, 74 degrees, good morning to you in oakland. 72 today in san jose so comfortable all across the board. throughout the next couple days, we're going to keep on climbing. it might get uncomfortably warm for some who don't like the heat. this is what we expect, for example, along the peninsula, a beautiful picture of stanford.

good morning. 75 degrees as we head into wednesday. by thursday, 76, up to 80 degrees by friday, the average is 67. so we're going to see temperatures in the 90s in some cities. i'll tell you where in my next report. let's check your drive. here is mike inouye. >> good morning, give you an overall pick your path. looking at a smooth drive now for this traffic tuesday. we'll zoom in and show the south bay first of all. northbound route including 101 up toward 680, no problem as far as our speed sensors are concerned. as you get toward 5:30, 5:45, a slower drive for that first burst in the next half hour. downtown you'll have to know, the sharks are playing the leafs, not a big concern. watch the restaurants, might be more crowded. a smooth drive for westbound 580 out of the livermore area in toward dublin starting with the build out of the altamont pass, you see yellow coming down.

no big surprises there either. we'll look at speeds through the east bay, a nice green zone drive for 880, 580 approaching the bay and the bay bridge. the bay bridge toll plaza a smooth drive t east shore freeway at the limit. a little wind, keep that in mind. might be a gust or two. san mateo bridge, off the high rise as well an easy flow toward 101. the peninsula moves smoothly and 101 to the north bay, more company. back to you. >> thank you. new video for you of american astronaut mike hopkins and two russian cosmonauts just after landing. you can see the three-man crew smiling despite freezing temperatures. they landed in kazakhstan after six months on the international space station. rescue crews say they are in good spirits. >> it is a som per day in japan, three years ago a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami destroyed parts of

japan, triggered one of the worst nuclear crisis in history. at 2:46 p.m. local time a prayer was observed around the country to remember the more than 15,000 people who died after the disaster. thousands more who still remain missing. japan's prime minister and the japanese emperor and his wife led a special ceremony in tokyo today. >> the school board expected to put off plans to build because of a decline in enrollment. the state law which requires kindergarteners to be 5 by september 1 led to fewer students in schools a. new school not needed at this time. the board meets tonight at 6:30. >> a cat accused of holding an entire family hostage. the 911 call you have got to hear is coming up next.

welcome back everyone. we're taking live to the senate where a talk-a-thon continues into almost their tenth hour. they are taking over the senate floor to bring attention to the issue of climate change this morning. boy, can we talk. can we show you great stories as well. this is a family in portland trying to decide whether to keep their cat after it attacked a baby and forced the family to take cover in a bedroom. the cat a 22-pound himalayan named luck, looks harmless here. his owners say he has a history of violent behavior. >> he's charging us. >> one moment, okay. >> you hear him? >> yeah, yeah, i hear him. hold on. keep your door shut, okay. >> they had to call 911.

officers had to contain the cat but when they got there the family was too afraid to come out of the bedroom to let them in. officers eventually got inside and were able to snare luck, put him behind bars in a crate. the family says though luck is just a cat they were scared. >> he started hissing and just like really like -- like not a meow but yowls like crazy. >> the family says it's not decided whether to keep that cat. >> i say no. >> firefighters, emt, used to the unexpected even in the tiniest of forms. >> after responding to a barn fire crews found several adult pigs, the piglets as well. some were burned in the fire, others having trouble breathing. crews gave the pigs oxygen, able to save three. they took them back to the fire house and nursed them back to

the civilian air traffic control. i want to put up a map of the region. you can see that flight path. it's that orange line from kuala lumpur to beijing, that's what the flight was supposed to be. authorities said they lost contact with the 777 along the line over the south china sea north of kuala lumpur. now the military is saying its military tracked the flight over the strait of malaka to the left of the orange line over that strip of green land there. that is a body of water on the left side of malaysia along the western coastline. the search for the 777 aircraft has expanded to include that body of water as well as the land itself. now, this morning police identified the two men traveling on stolen passports. both men from iran, one is there, 19-year-old eouria mhrdad, his ticket was purchased in thailand. his final destination was supposed to be frankfurt,

germany where his mother was waiting. she has spoken with police. police in malaysia are convinced he was not involved in the disappearance of flight 370. >> we believe that he is not likely to be a member of any terrorist group, and we believe that he is trying to migrate to germany. >> reporter: this is the photo of the other iranian man, 29-year-old delavar seyed mohammadreza. interpol wonders if he was being smugged or trafficked hence the reason for the stolen passport. interpol is more convinced th that -- they have not ruled out the possibility that someone else tried to bring down the flight. police are looking into four possible causes. hijacking, sabotage, psychological problems with the passenger or crew, or personal

problems with the passenger or crew. reporting live in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we will continue to follow this story all morning long, coming up we'll go live to washington where the white house is doing what it can to help find that missing plane. and you can keep up to date on the latest on our website nbcbayarea.com. >> there is a big question emerging in the disappearance of the flight, in this day and age of technology, why is it so hard to find a missing plane? it was last seen on radar over the south china sea. all flights beyond 120 miles offshore use gps to determine their exact location, then communicate coordinates to controllers on the ground. but for many routes around the world the gap between communication can be as long as an hour. >> the reality is these planes are operating with varying technology and getting the data back to controllers is difficult. >> not only is it difficult to

pinpoint where the plane may have hit the water, it's also diflt estimate how far it might have traveled after that. >> it can glide a long way under the water to a completely different location. they don't go straight down with the currents and a lot of other stuff it can cover a lot of distance before it settles. >> even if the black box is submerged it will emit a pinging so investigators can find it. the problem is the ping doesn't travel long distances so it's possible crews haven't gotten close enough yet. >> a follow-up for you, a fremont little league team rebuilding one more time after an intentionally set fire to one of its facilities. this is the burned out shell of what was the team's brand new score booth on the warm springs elementary school campus. it was built because the team's previous score booth burned down. the booth, a classroom at james leech elementary school and a

bathroom were set on fire but they won't go as far as to say there is a serial arsonist on the loose. >> prosecutors now calling it a case of mistaken identity. they say theodore lorigo a registered sex offender has been dressing as a woman, isn't the same person seen at south peninsula hebrew day school. lorigo was arrested in january for being a registered sex offender on school property but turns out he wasn't there and charges have been dropped. lorigo pleaded guilty having a fake i.d. though. he changed his i.d. to reflect his female name. >> it's 5:35. san jose leaders will decide whether to save an iconic movie theater. marianne favro joins us live by the theater with more details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this theater was built in 1964

notice that, so thanks for waking wake-up us. temperatures are mild to start. 58 degrees in san francisco, but you're at 45 in the north bay so chilly conditions to kick off the day. we're going to see a rebound, climbing by 30 to 35 degrees as we stand throughout the day in the north bay. 72 degrees at your high. 69 in san francisco, east bay at 74 and 72 degrees for us right here in beautiful san jose so. this is what you can expect. cool and clear morning, breezy through the hills, and your open water bridges as well have been reporting chp says it was windy earlier this morning so take it easy. we're double-teaming on weather and traffic together as usual. unseasonably warm by noon, full sunshine and then by this evening once we lose that sunshine temperatures drop like a rock and your sunset 7:12 after the time change. i wanted to give you a preview where we're headed via the

temperature trend. average is 64. you're going to be at 80. by friday into this weekend, 90 degrees on sunday. that's going to bring the motorcyclists out. you better believe it. >> that's right. we talk about motorcycles harder to see so check your blind spot as the warmer weather kicks in. the winds, look at our emeryville traffic and chp did. issue another advisory. i turned this 180 degrees so we can look at the taillights. here is the reason, we talked about the flat tire at 580. it wasn't this one. that's moving smoothly. it is westbound 580 up to the split. reports after flat tire fixed. there is a little slowing so that may be in the slow lane. watch for flashing lightings. the commute direction westbound for 80, moving smoothly as well

now to the developing story of the missing malaysia airlines jet. right now nine krarkt, 24 ships from nine countries searching off the coast of malaysia for any sign of the plane, still no luck. tracie potts live on capitol hill this morning for how the u.s. is helping. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, the u.s. is heavily involved in the search. let's start with the pentagon t

navy sent a couple of destroyers to the region to help. they have helicopters on board to help with the search and hopefully rescue effort, at least a recovery effort if nothing else. we've also sent a surveillance aircraft to try to help with what is now a widening search in that area because there was so much fuel on the plane they really aren't sure what area to pinpoint. so that's going on from the military standpoint. we've also sent investigators in to help. the faa has a couple of people already on the ground in malaysia, as of yesterday also the ntsb that investigates these types of incidents in the united states, they have sent people to malaysia, so at least four investigators that are helping out with the effort there. the fbi is also involved. they were looking at the fingerprints of those two people who got on board with stolen passports, now it's looking more and more like those two people
