7:02 am
this is confusion. the malaysian military still isn't sure whether this is the area in the top left, the upper northwest quadrant here, if that's the area where the plane was last seen, near the island of palau per rack. look at the yellow line here, the course for the flight, headed out over malasia, out over the south china sea toward vietnam. they believe it doubled back, as reflected in red here, coming back over malaysia, back toward the strait of malaka and it disappeared. now, the indian navy offering to help search for the plane in this area, in the northwest. that's the andaman sea. as america wakes up this morning, a fifth day of searching is coming to an end in southeast asia. the search zone expanded to include both the malaysian east and west coast, amid reports from the malaysian military that the plane may have doubled back with a sharp left turn, headed toward the indian ocean. but who was in command? still no sign of malaysia airlines flight 370. malaysian authorities provided an update just a short time ago

>> this is unprecedented, what we are going through, coordinating so many countries together. it's not something that is easy and each time that passes, i fear that this search and rescue becomes just a search. but we will never give up hope. >> reporter: the search zone has been expanded to a 27,000-square-nautical-mile area. it wasn't until day five of the search for the missing air france plane in 2009 that searchers first spotted floating pieces in the water. >> but when you get out there on board a ship, the world becomes very large, that ocean does. and the plane becomes very small. >> reporter: david gal slow with the woods hold team that used remotely operated streaks find the actual air france wreckage two years after it crashed. finding the malaysia airlines plane, he says, seems like an even bigger challenge. >> we are at the very beginning of what might be a very long process. and in the sense, haven't even taken the first step of knowing

that we are looking under the sea for this plane. >> reporter: meanwhile, a colorado company has deployed two of its high-resolution satellites over the search area, taking photographs and asking anyone online to help search for any signs of the plane. >> instead of having one analyst looking at the whole image, we will split it up into little chunks and put it online and we asked for people to help us identify these areas that look anomalous or look like damaged aircraft or wreckage. >> reporter: already, more than half a million people have looked at the images, tagging anything that looks like a clue. so many, the website has crashed. now the theories of what happened to this plane include a catastrophic malfunction, an in-flight breakup, a hijacking, a suicide attack, something with the crew, but to prove any of those theories, they have to find the plane. savannah? >> tom costello, thank you so much. greg fife is a former investigator with the ntsb. greg, good morning. we need a detective today. let's talk about this path. now we are hearing from malaysian authorities that
7:05 am
perhaps military aircraft picked up a signal, obviously, we lost the transponder there and the signal is picked up and then lost right here. first of all, what does this turn, the trajectory of this turn, tell you? >> well, based on this particular turn, it is a planned turn. this is an intentional event. this wasn't an airplane that had a -- any kind of mechanical problem and the airplane turned and then flew this straight course. so, this was somebody making this turn. >> is it fishy that this turn occurs just about the point that civilian radar is going to be lost? >> that's one thing, as an investigator, that's very curious, 'cause you're right at the edge of the radar point here and then as the airplane trans -- flies over to this point, that answers the edge of that military radar coverage as well. >> we are talking about civilian radar, military radar. they are not equal. they are different. civilian will actually tell you what the flight is. military radar seems to be a cruder reading? >> the civilian radar is interrogating you the transpond they're we have been talking about that gives specific
7:06 am
information about the altitude and the speed of the aircraft. the military radar in this case is just a primary, that is, it's a skin paint. so it sends a signal out, reflects off the airplane, comes back, but has no particular data to t. it can't say particularly that this was even flight 370. >> can't even tell you what kind of aircraft it is, whether it's a helicopter or an airplane it just says there is a target out there here it is but doesn't give you altitude or air speed. >> is it strange there wouldn't be civilian coverage in this area as it crosses over the peninsu peninsula? >> coverage is scant and non-existent that's why we have mandatory reporting points for pilots. so, when they get a spot, they will report to atc, this is where i am, how high i am and when i expect to be at my next point that's how atc tracks them. >> we have another map that shows the search area. i should say yesterday, it was 10,000 square miles. today, it is 35,000 square miles. you raise an interesting point before you came on. just because we lose contact with this craft around here
7:07 am
doesn't mean it landed there or crashed there. it could have kept flying for how long? >> oh it could have kept flying for another three, four, five hours. we don't know exactly how much fuel was on the airplane, but if they are saying seven hours, this turn, as you go outbound and then come back is about two and a half hours so that means really, you have another five hours of fuel. so, that airplane could have kept going out well into the indian ocean. >> before let you go, is it conceivable in this day and able with all of our technology, that a men could simply vanish and never be found? >> an airplane the size of a 777 doesn't just vanish. it's probable that -- i mean, it's possible that it could possibly disappear and be hidden and it would take a long time, but it's not very probable. they are going to find this airplane eventually. >> greg fife, always good to get your expertise. thank you. >> welcome. savannah, thanks very much a bitter war of words heating up between congress and the cia. did the intelligence agency actually spy on a congressional investigation? nbc's andrea mitchell has the
