to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm peggy bunker. an update to breaking news to tell you about. the area where a suspected drunk driver plowed into a crowd of people at a popular festival is being blocked by police tape. >> overnight two people were kill and more than two dozen hurt when the driver smashed through a barricade at the south by southwest music festival in austin, texas. bob joins us in studio. bob, police say they were chasing the driver before the crash. >> correct. they did try to pull him over on suspicion of druv driving. they say he faces charges of capital murder. two counts. that's how serious this is. a witness videotaped the scene moments after the suspected drunk driver drove through the crowd. you can see people hunched over trying to help them. in one instance performing chest compressions trying to bring them back to life. police say they did try to pull

him over, but instead of complying he sped off in the wrong direction down a oneway, turned onto red river, which had been shut down for the festival. it was crowded with people leaving the consefrmt he plowed through the mound, you heard a man saying he knocked them down. two were killed, a man and woman riding on a moped. the driver then hit a cab and crashed, trying to run away but was tased and taken into custody. >> cannot stop a person who decides that rather than face potential drunk driving charges decides to flee at a high rate of speed, go around a uniform officer forcing him to run out of the way and at a high rate shows total disregard for human life. that's why we will be charging direct filing two counts of capital murder on this

individual. >> that individual is suspected drunk driver faces 23 counts. >> have they identified who the people were that were on the -- at the news conference? >> no identities yet on the suspected drunk driver nor on the man and woman killed but that news conference will be taking place around 8:30 local time for us. >> thank you. >> the mystery is growing, what happened to the missing malaysia airlines jet? new information suggests the plane could have safely flown for hours after it disappeared from radar. chase cain joins us. with the new developments, malaysia's government is denying them. >> they are denying a lot of reports but boeing and rolls-royce told "the wall street journal" that they get updates on the plane's equipment about every half hour or so and that the plane was still functioning properly. some four hours after it

supposedly vanish. . that could mean it traveled an extra 2200 nautical mile, malaysian authorities say that is inacraxt they are dismissing reports from the chinese media that they released these images yesterday that were supposedly taken on sunday by a satellite showing what they say could be debris and smoke from the plane. vietnam says they searched and found nothing but may search again w. this report that the plane may not have crashed, there is concern about possible are theism. someone keeps flying the jet that is something that officials are looking into. malaysian officials called a press conference to deny conflicting reports. >> i would like to refer to the report suggesting that the aircraft may have continued flying some time after last

contact. those reports are inaccurate. the last transmission from the aircraft was at 0107 which indicates everything was normal. >> aviation experts pointed out it's unprecedented for there to be so much bickering and disagreement into a missing plane including media reports that malaysian police may have searched one of the homes of the pilots. officials of course deny that report as well. but depending on which theory you subscribe there may be mor questions. is it the hands of terrorists or did it go down somewhere? >> it's strange in this day and age of communication not knowing. >> how do we lose a plane so big? that's the question many are asking. >> new details about a gas explosion that flattened two apartment buildings in harlem, new york. firefighters found the bodies of

four more people in the wreckage that brings the death dole to seven. more than 60 others are injured. rescuers are shifting through the wreckage. they are using flood lights and thermal imaging to find more victims. they are concerned about a cast iron pipe line more than 125 old. >> we've had a long standing concern about cast ire pipes. we want to find out not only what happened but why it happened. >> investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the explosion but some in the area say they complained to the landlord about with smelling gas as eently as tuesday. >> the scene of that massive fire in san francisco we have live pictures. you see a firefighter way up high on a ladder. fire crews have spent most of the night pouring water on

from about a few miles per hour up to about 10 miles per hour in the north bay so calm winds and that's going to be the case all day long. let's take you outside and show you what it's looking like. in the 40s and 50s for the most part. want to grab a jacket, maybe a hoody before you step out. even by noon you'll be able to shed that. we're talking about 70s across the board from san francisco at 71, north bay, east bay and south bay valleys all looking very warm today. in the upper 70s. gilroy one of the warmest at 80. belmont 75. again, above average even at the coast. sausalito 70 degrees, walnut creek 75 and livermore at 76 degrees. so yes, if this has you thinking about the beach, no, that's not me surfing. i like to see if my surfing skills are not that good.

set up for the south by southwest festival a. man and bop were killed, two dozen hurt. the suspected drunk driver was trying to evade police. >> an incredible report from "the wall street journal" saying a missing airliner may have kept flying for hours after its last communication. the malaysian government says the report that the engines continued to send data as part after maintenance program is wrong. there is still no sign of the plane. >> seven people confirmed dead in a blast that flattened two new york city apartment buildings. yesterday's gas-fueled explosion injured more than 60 people. crews are using thermal imaging cameras to search the debris. >> and this morning san francisco firefighters are keeping an eye out for any flare-ups at a construction site that call it fire. crews began demolishing the complex on itself to prevent it from spilling onto the street. christie smith joins us live in the mission bay neighborhood with the latest on the investigation. you see that building collapsing, christie, it's a huge project now.

>> reporter: it is huge. good morning to you, peggy. they have about 13 san francisco firefighters here overnight doing what you were talking about, basically keeping a close eye on this. they have got one firefighter on a ladder truck there. he has a hose, he is looking for any signs that this fire might be flaring up again. they did see a little bit of that but right now they say it's not a problem, things looking good. three engine companies watching round the clock as this once tall building is knocked down to four stories at its highest. demolition crew desire press on this burning building into itself to prevent collapse into the street. overnight the demolition has stopped while investigators continue to look for a cause. they still focus on welding but it's too unsafe to actually go in. >> that would be honestly i think we would have everybody

let's look around the bay. nothing dramatic. your slow spots here in the east bay and tri-valley. north 101 and 680 to 880. starting here, this is the second burst of the morning, this will hit and stick. 87 will follow. actually 85 and 28. we'll follow that. nothing unusual there. out of the south bay, northbound 680 originally dramatic report, a car on its roof on the shoulder there. and people are not responding when they try to get a hold of them. they drove through and said yeah, nothing there. there may be a car on the side. there is slowing that develops typical out of sunol in toward fremont. 880, second of two crashes, but no major drama, no major slowing. the earlier crash at 92 has

cleared. let's look at the roads. from that point in san mateo, getting over there and moving westbound, the commute starts to build. a smooth drive 101, 92, no slowing there and the bay shore freeway moves along the peninsula. a footh drive north on 880 past the coliseum. mild slowing. and the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights are on here. a showdown in the -- cleared from the upper east shore freeway. a better flow there. >> prince performing a surprise concert in the east bay this weekend. the rock superstar announced he will play at the fox theater saturday night. we checked ticket master and they are gone but there may be a silver lining. another tweeted out.

>> 6:44, the area where a suspected drink driver slammed into dozens of people in texas is still closed this morning. nearly two dozen were hurt and two killed when the driver drove through barricades at the south by southwest festival. bob joins us with the latest on this investigation. very tragic, bob. >> yes. good morning. two are dead as you mentioned a man and woman, 23 people hurt, five of them critically. this is what the scene looked like moments after this happened. this was 12:30 in the morning local time austin scene through a video camera. several lying on the street as others try to tend to them and at least one instance performing cpr. police say that moments prior to this they tried to pull over a driver suspected of drinking.

he sped away heading the wrong direction on a one way road. then turned on red river which was blocked off. he busted through and plowed into a crowd of people leaving a concert at a club. he struck several of them including that man and woman. they were on a moped, both died at the scene. >> i see two bodies up in the air, i see one on the windshield and one on the grille of the car. and i looked at them from that point on, from that point on he never stopped. kept hitting bodies, you could see them flying like bowling ball pins. >> that suspected driver hit a cab, crashed, tried to run from the scene. austin police believe that the man had been drinking. they say he faces two charges of

capital murder. along with 23 counts of aggravated assault. laura, peggy. >> thank you so much. as we check in on the forecast for the day, also take you live over the san jose -- boy, look at the sun rise. >> look at the glow to. we're going to have pretty nice temperatures today. in fact, beautiful. spectacular shot. you'll find elsewhere we're not looking at a lot of fog even in san francisco we have fog-free conditions. that's what it's going to look like. clear skies really all the way through sunset. you'll notice temperatures in the 40s and 50s, you want to grab a jacket. 71 degrees in san jose, by 5:0076 degrees. even in san francisco warm at

the coast line. talking about a good mix of 60s to near 70 degrees right about 5:00. so again, big time highs are going to be well above average. our average high around 67 degrees, so we're going to smash that in san jose, close to 80. even livermore close to that and in wine country a mix of upper 70s there. now this is just kick off where we expect to the continue all the way through this upcoming week. by friday, saturday and sunday, a good widespread mix of 80s, starting tomorrow we'll see low 80s, then by saturday and sunday that's when things start to warm up. we're talking about 20 degrees above where we should be for this time of year in places like san jose, 86 degrees on sunday. it's all because of an area of high pressure positioned on top of us. so we've got offshore winds, this is indicative of what we usually see around our summer months. but a little bit early so it's keeping things toasty. it may have you thinking about

the beach. look at this. monterey 79, santa cruz 80. warmer for sunday, places go up additional 2-5 degrees, santa cruz at 82 sunday, even bodega bay known for being chilly 81 degrees. maybe you don't like to hit the beach. head up to tahoe, maybe truckee. in the 50s, even yosemite, 70 degrees. a little bit of something for everybody. you can't complain and perfect in the slopes where they have 72 inches of snow in the upper mountains so all is not lost. let's talk about rain headed our way. once we get through the weekend and 80s, in the 70s, eventually the 60s as a weak system tries to make its way. if we can't get rain we might as well get sunshine. >> you can get sunshine and go to the siegel's nest they have a

spa, a pool, all in california. showing a smooth drive. the peninsula moves nicely. nothing dramatic going on. the south bay a slowdown for northbound 101 followed by 87, 85, now 28 heading toward the construction zone. still one lane blocked. we have a slow drive from auto mall parkway to mission boulevard. where the car went off the road, no injuries reported but as crews arrive they may have to pull the car. haven't gotten confirmation so expect one lane to be blocked. coming into the same area but on 880 at stevenson boulevard reports after trash that moved to the shoulder. caused enough that you have extra slowdown toward auto mall parkway. looks hike a hot of folks are

coming over and adding to the mirnlg. a slower drive southbound, the traffic out of the tri-valley for south 680 and 580. northbound 680 up toward the interchange we did have a breakdown. disabled vehicle, looks like everything is clear, that's good news. a smooth drive, the oakland wear 880 a. hook out this and you see the traffic no. surprises. this is the past the coliseum into downtown and toward the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are on. we'll look on the other side of the bay. northbound moves past willow up into san francisco. the southbound side starts to build, slowing through san mateo and university avenue into mountain view. back to you. >> thank you. u.s. counter terrorism officials have growing concerns about the missing malaysia plane.

new reports suggest that the jet could have flown undreads more miles after disappearing from radar. live from the newsroom, chase, this is adding another layer of mystery, saying it's possible the plane landed safely somewhere. >> it is possible because boeing and rolls-royce told "the wall street journal" they continued to receive reports about every half hour after it vanished so that would give the plane a chance to land. the surge radius could be larger, possibly as many as 2200 nautical miles wide. that has images released yesterday that could be debris or smoke from the plane, these were taken on sunday. they have searched that area and found nothing but may go back.

malaysian officials dismiss those as well as reports that the plane may have kept flying for many more hours, the concern over terrorism is growing as well. looking into the possibility that someone may have disabled the equipment on the plane. so that could mean that everyone on board is safe on the ground somewhere possibly held. really the question is who knows because there are so many conflicting reports. malaysian authorities took to a press conference. >> police have issued a statement to that effect. >> aviation experts have pointed out that it is rather unprecedented for there to be agreement between countries and officials and what happened with this plane including reports
