>> a private investigator joins in the search for sierra lamar two years after the teen went missing. the interview you'll only see right here on "today in the bay." >> and the calendar says winter but it sure isn't going to feel like it as we continue the stretch of near-record heat all weekend long into next week. but we're still tracking the return of showers in the forecast. i'll time everything out in moments. >> right now great weather, dry roads and friday commute just kicking in. slowing for san jose. we'll show you that effect on the rest coming up. >> we're going to tell you which airline about to shut down south bay service. it's friday, march 14, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. 6:00 this morning. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning after several delays pg&e says it will begin
6:01 am
the very loud repair work in about an hour. crews have been out all morning setting up, the utility is warning homeowners it could be as loud as a jet engine taking off. crews were supposed to start venting a gas line this morning around 101 but the work keeps getting pushed back because crews are working on other parts of the line. christie smith joins us live with an update from pg&e. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. right now doesn't sound too bad. you hear generators. as you said about 7:00 it's going to get loud, very loud. a pg&e spokesperson tells me it's going to sound like a jet engine here in san carlos this morning. and that's because they are venting a natural gas pipe line to do work here and also in redwood city. get earplugs out. maybe extra pillows if you wanted to sleep in. the venting is going around a pipe sticking out of the ground this morning. it actually could have been
6:02 am
worse in terms of the timing. originally 2:00, 3:00, now 7:00 so. that's because the delays that they basically with tell me they had a number of valves and a lot of prep work they had to deal with. they want to be very, very careful. this is at old county and commercial, it does connect with other work around redwood city and industrial and whipple. so when you drive around you're going to see a number of crews in the areas working, a lot of detours to get around all of this. will be loud, i'm told, for about an hour, maybe 90 minutes. but i'm told that gas service in the area should not be impacted. reporting live, christie submission, "today in the bay." >> thank you. police are waiting for a search warrant to start removing pot plants found during a house fire. the marijuana grow operation was found inside one room but when fire broke out before midnight no one was inside the home. firefighters are investigating
6:03 am
to see if the electrical system may have been tampered with. this is happening now on stonewall avenue in hayward less than a mile from long wood elementary school near interstate 880. >> it's two years since the search for sierra lamar continues in the south bay. a man is charged with kidnapping and killing the 15-year-old but her body has never been found. now the family is working with a private investigator. bob redell joins us live in the sierra lamar search center with the interview only on nbc bay area. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, sierra lamar's family hired mark garcia with golden state investigations, a former sheriff deputy. you retired prior to her disappearance. but you've been trying to help the family find her body in recent months. you had an interesting conversation with mark klaas last night. you brought up something
6:04 am
interesting about the alleged suspect antolin garcia torres. >> yes. i called mark for his professional advice on this. you know, again, i never want to interfere with an investigation and so you have to be careful what you say. you know, even asked him if he thought this was a good thing to do. he said absolutely. he said you know, we don't want to stop until we find her, and we just kind of shared ideas to make this happen. >> do you have a better sense ever since you joined the effort of where her body might be? >> exactly, no. but i believe it's close. i think that you know, the people involved in this know this area well. they grew up here. i mean, think of shon dra levy case. she was running down a path. law enforcement searched several times and it was off the side of an embankment and it was just foliage on top of it. it could be that simple.
6:05 am
we could walk over it every day and don't know. >> you do have $10,000 set aside through your company for what? >> i have a very generous people involved in the company and friends that we have $10,000 for any information that would lead us to sierra and no matter what state. at that point i wouldn't even try to find home run locate, i would turn it over to professionals and let them do their job. >> mark, thank you very much. we're in the sierra lamar search center which moved to the old central high location in morgan hill. and after all of this time, two year, there is still a group of dedicated people, roughly 25 who almost every saturday go out and try to find her. they will do it again tomorrow. if you are interested come by and try to help find her. reporting live in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i have seen signs throughout community bring sierra home. let's hope it happens one day. >> new details in the search for the missing jet.
6:06 am
vietnam is scaling back its search in the south china sea to expand to the indian ocean. look at this map of the search area, vietnam says it will send planes and ships to the strait of malacca. the expanded search comes after a report that the boeing 777 sent signals to a satellite for hours after the plane went missing. malaysian investigators have not said when or whether they had information about those satellite signals. >> in the past hours crews removed u.s. airways plane that blew a tire on the front landing gear forcing the pilot to abort takeoff. that forced the gear to collapse. flight 1702 headed to ft. lauderdale, florida around 6:30 when the front tire blew out, sending the front of the plane to the ground. more than 150 people rushed out of the emergency chutes. we're hearing for the first time the communication between the pilots of u.s. airways 1702 and the philadelphia airport control tower.
6:07 am
>> u.s. on the runway. we're going to dispatch the emergency vehicles. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused the plane's landing gear to collapse. >> pretty amazing pictures. taking a look outside at the bay bridge lit up with beautiful lights. check in with meteorologist christina loren, going to let us know how the weekend is looking. >> aren't we happy that it is. we can all enjoy together. happy friday everybody. as we get ready to enjoy sleeping in and getting outdoors, not having to go to work. temperatures really warm. i have to point that out. so you can get to the beach this weekend, that is the place to be. temperatures right now mostly in the 40s and 50s. we have patchy low clouds. but overall those are going to clear by about 9:00 a.m. a warm finish to the day. if you are heading out watch out for a little bit of patchy fog
6:08 am
at the coast. by lunch time not a cloud in the sky. even in san francisco. mostly clear evening, temps drop quickly at night once we lose that warmth. this is what we expect in san francisco, 74. 79 in the south bay, tri-valley at 81 degrees. closer to 90 as we get into the weekend. for the east bay 77 degrees, warm breeze. near record warmth along the peninsula. you are starting out so mild and we have the upper 70s today. in the north bay by noon. 82 degrees is the high there. so we're tracking showers, we'll tell you how much warmer it's going to be, coming up here's mike and your drive. >> you might want to avoid the san mateo bridge if it's a choice between the san mateo and the dumbarton because look at this, westbound 92, we'll take this full screen you see a stream of headlights off of the high rise westbound toward foster city boulevard. somewhere as you approach there is a disabled minivan which turned into possibly a crash, reports of two other vehicles
6:09 am
including a big rig there. no major injuries but crews are still arriving. it's suddenly slowing quite a bit off of that high rise. this happened in a couple of minutes so we'll look at the map. we don't see slowing from hayward side toward this. we'll look at the maps again, we'll show you the speed sensors on the hayward side moving at the green level. over to the peninsula, still green but we saw the headlights slowing. a crash possibly blocking one, two lanes. hopefully they can move that quickly. the dumbarton bridge is a good alternate. slow across 92 right now this morning. friday typically lighter through the bay. here in the south bay your slowdown north 101 and holding at speeds under 60 miles per hour. about 55 right there. it's not so bad. the rest of the south bay starting a gentle build. we'll look at speeds, to the tri-valley, west 580 out of the altamont pass. you're about 50 miles per hour on average. slowing to dublin as well as out
6:10 am
of the altamont. the bay bridge toll plaza has a backup. a live look here. the cash lanes are a problem. we don't have metering lights yet. avoid westbound across the san mateo bridge t the bay bridge is another alternate. back to you. >> thank you so much. also a little work here to let you know for the weekend. 280/880 interchange will enter a new phase that means road closures. so starting at 9:00 caltrans crews close three ramps. the northbound 280 to northbound 880 and stevens creek, also the southbound 280 to northbound 880. and the northbound 17 to stevens creek so you can see the triangle is going to be affected. the overnight work will last until 10:00 tomorrow morning part of an effort to improve one of the most dangerous interchanges in the bay area. there will be a fly over ramp how it will directly connect northbound 280 to northbound
6:11 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
seriously. >> mystery continues as does the search for the missing malaysian plane expanding again this time to include the indian ocean. yesterday u.s. officials said the plane sent signals to a satellite for four hours after the aircraft went missing. >> secretary of state john kerry is in london this morning to try to stop sunday's vote for crimea to become part of russia. u.s. officials say there will be immediate and quote serious consequences if russia does not leave ukraine. >> virgin america will no longer be flying out of planet ta international airport. chase cain is there with the reason behind this decision and when the final flight will be. i hope it's not today because i'm on one of those planes today. how's it going? >> it's not. peggy, you are safe. i checked the online reservation system. looks like the last night that they are taking reservations for is on may 14 so that's two months from today. so still a little time for virgin flyers. the airline began operating out
6:15 am
of san jose to los angeles last may, and it seems they will only be operating those flights for one year. the silicon valley business journal reports the decision to end the flights from sjc is because enough people aren't flying, that traffic is up for the airline here out of san jose but apparently not up enough to save these flights. for people who do frequent san jose airport, you shouldn't really worry about a huge impact on service because there are six other airlines which offer daily flights between san jose and los angeles. delta, alaska, u.s. air, american, united, and southwest, six others, offer this same flight so there's obviously a lot of competition and seems in this case virgin could not compete with those other airlines which have been flying for some time. also southwest. hopefully prices won't change too much with virgin pulling out. there are two more months of flights here, the business journal reports that virgin is
6:16 am
adding flights in dallas so the expectation a lot of the planes that had been flying out of sjc are going to fly out of dallas. certainly a sad news for people who do frequent san jose airport. one guy told us that's the only airline he flies out of here so he's going to have to decide what to do next. at least your flight today is safe sow can get out no problem. >> thanks for looking into that. >> as long as peggy's okay. >> come on now. >> we've got to get peggy tickets for the first ever event at levi stadium. san jose earthquake host on august 2. a lot of excitement over the grand opening there are still people who aren't happy b. with 100 attended a meeting last night. the police chiefs were there to address concerns. >> i didn't vote for the stadium. i did not want it in my own back yard. people will not want to pay $20 over at the stadium, come down here, walk over or just grab
6:17 am
light rail which you can do right here. and basically take up our guest parking. >> the police chief told the crowd there will be an increase in officers on came day and admit that traffic problems will be a work in progress. they will make adjustments when needed. >> a lot of people excited on the other side to see the new stadium and check it out. also excited it's friday. nice weather on tap. >> friday, we love friday around here. getting to work especially if you are up with us at this hour it can be difficult. we love our weekend. the weather is on our side. a little bit of heat headed our way as we head into st. patrick's day weekend. starting out the day in the 50s. this morning it's chilly in the north bay. we're close to 50. 54 in san francisco, 41 in the north bay. and 45 degrees to kick off your friday. beautiful san jose. here's where we're headed. upper 70s in the south bay, warmer actually along the peninsula than what we expect right here in the south bay.
6:18 am
because of that warm start. palo alto mostly clear. low clouds overhead. you'll see those once the -- lube at what high pressure does to the bay area temperatures. right now we're starting out chilly out there. the low so far this morning 47 in san jose, we head into this afternoon all of these numbers are going to jump. i mean really jump. we'll be in the upper 70s, it's a 31-degree temperature spread. 40 for napa and napa. that's a warm day. dress in layers today. as we head throughout the weekend, the really warm weather sets in. so keep that in mind. 79 in monterey on sunday. surf's up, mike. >> aloha. it's over across the water. traffic flows smoothly. we're hanging tight as far as the volume of traffic and watching because this same area west 580 off of el charo
6:19 am
approaching the off ramps there, reports are this weekend direction these are stalled. we don't see it. i'll show you on the map. what we're pulling the modular, mobile home in the area. we get to the map we'll see this slower drive that is starting to hold steady. nothing dramatic but a big rig hauling a modular tomorrow that may be blocking part of the slow lane. we didn't see that on the camera, may be closer to hoppier. watching this for the tri-valley. 680 moves smoothly, so does 580. across the san mateo bridge i showed you slowing off of the high rise. reports after stall, then a minor fender-bender. the traffic is slow, smooths out we see sensors holding steady as you approach. getting over to 101. so maybe if you van use the dumbarton bridge.
6:20 am
we're going to look toward the palo alto area. the same portion of the peninsula an easy drive. we'll get you live shots, where the backup forming. the metering lights turned on. we don't always see those on friday so there you go, the alert, this is the first friday, a time change, it's only that short time. there we have it. slowing on the straight away over there. we're looking toward the southbound 101 area, we have a few more folks joining in but not a major concern out of santa rosa. novato you join in with these folks then south to san rafael, a little bit of slowing. back to you. >> this is quite the story a. man who woke up kicking in a body bag weeks ago has now died. 78-year-old walter williams died early yesterday morning in mississippi. the life long farmer had been pronounced dead weeks ago, and was even taken to a funeral home where he woke up in the body

6:25 am
permanently disabled. sanchez faces the same gun charges but has not yet entered a plea. >> today we've got our first look at what oscar pistorius looked like right after he shot and killed his girlfriend. in his murder trial prosecutors showed photographs of pistorius standing on his blood-stained prosthetic legs wearing shorts covered in blood. the pictures were in taken in the granl of pistorius' home after steenkamp was shot. the officer also said he witnessed a crime scene investigator handle a gun used without gloves. >> a trial of five of bernie madoff's could go to trial. four of the defendants are here including madoff's secretary and account manager and two computer programmers. federal prosecutors say that the defendants helped madoff with his massive ponzi scheme. he says he acted alone in cheating thousands of investors out of $20 billion.

6:45 am
just told her, giving you an update. how you doing? >> good morning. happy friday. there is a reason that people who work near runways wear that protective head gear because it's loud and it's going to get loud here in san carlos, possibly as soon as 15 to 20 minutes. pg&e telling me it may sound like a jet engine and this repair could last an hour, maybe a little bit longer. so get those earplugs ready if you are nearby. all of this because the utility is venting a natural gasline which will allow it to do work along the line from here into redwood city. you may smell a little natural gas, surely here in san carlos where we are. this is an industrial area, but you will see work going on here and all along the line. so pg&e wanted to get the word out to people who might be concerned about what's going on. i think you mentioned but originally overnight work was at 2:00, then 3:00, now it's at
6:46 am
7:00 because they say there are a lot of valves and prep work to keep this operation safe. i am told, though, that this shouldn't affect anyone's natural gas service, just be very, very loud. could go on an hour. maybe a little bit longer. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks. 6:46. police in hayward waiting for a search warrant to start removing pot plants found during a house fire. a marijuana grow operation was found in one room. but when the fire broke out before midnight no one was in the house. they are investigating to see if electric systems may have been tampered with. it's happening in hayward less than a mile from long wood elementary school near 880. so far police have no suspects in custody. >> a look at the forecast right now. as we take a look outside now, san jose and also san francisco, look at that. beautiful lights. >> look at that.

6:48 am
be hard to find a cloud. temps are going to soar as a result. and a few high clouds will return by sun set. tomorrow we're not going to have low clouds to start the day. it's going to be kind of a cool day out there for the first part of the day in san francisco. you're going to hit a high of 74 degrees today. 79 on the way to the south bay, 82 degrees along the peninsula because of that warm start you're getting there. it's going to be a sunny day and temperatures even warmer as we head into the next couple days. we're kicking off st. patrick's day celebration in the city by the bay. market street they have the parade. at 11:00, it's a cool parade. count on a lot of traffic. it's one of those parades you don't want to miss. 65 at 11:00. you want to hit the beach, beautiful. you might wonder where is scott mcgrew.
