strong and the community and the volunteers, the media have been very supportive and keeping her face out there and increasing awareness to the general public that, you know, every day we think that, you know, things are good. but the reality is there is evil out there. there are risks out there for our children and as parents we need to do everything possible to protect our children. >> right. certainly she wasn't do anything that an average teenager would do, she was going to the bus stop on the way to school. there shouldn't have been any trouble along the way. the sheriff's department maintains that sierra is not coming home. they think she's gone. what do you think? do you think it's a possibility? >> well, there's nothing really definitive, you know, we don't have any proof that that's the truth and we still have a lot of unanswered questions at this point as far as i'm concerned. so, somebody has to step it up.

so, if you are going to head out to the coast and enjoy the warm weather especially around santa cruz, be careful on the seashore this weekend. that's the main weather concern as the high surf advisory. not much in the way of any chances of rain or cloud cover as we go hour by hour through the evening. things staying relatively clear on the coast. just some patches of low clouds and that should be the case as we head into the night and into tomorrow morning. most of the clouds staying offshore as the winds should be generally out of the north which is a dry wind and one that will help to boost our temperatures as we go through the weekend. no signs of rain. this is the weekend pattern. 70s and 80s inland, could hit some mid-80s in some of the warmest spots tomorrow in the east bay and then the high's going to weaken a bit. but not enough to really just clear the picture. we're going to see one system come by monday which will tawls some high clouds our way. and give us breezy conditions and now how the showers between now and friday night staying off to the north of us. so, as we head towards the next weekend, looks like a dry start but we could see a pattern shift for the following week, so it's

not in the seven-day forecast you're seeing there. just a little bit of cooling later on as we go through the week but it's the following week where we could see the return of rain. we need a trough of low pressure to return to the coast and we might start to see that maybe eight to ten days from now. but to start off your weekend it does look pretty nice. close to 80 in san jose today. mid to upper 70s around the peninsula. san francisco, st. patrick's day parade looks good. we should see low 70s around the marina. the north bay, highs close to 80 in santa rosa and tri-valley temperatures in the lowe 80s this afternoon and around fremont we should see temperatures in the upper 70s. so, your getaway forecast around the area, santa cruz getting up to 78 degrees. close to 72 with patchy low clouds around monterey and even up to the sierra you're going to enjoy the snow, but day time highs in the low 60s. cooling around the sierra as we head towards monday and we should hopefully see another chance of snow programs coming to the high country towards the end of next weekend. kris? >> thank you very much, rob. still ahead on "today in the

there are thousands of redwood trees all across the bay area but one extremely rare redwood is causing quite a fuss. "today in the bay's" joe rosato jr. shows us why its location may bring its end. >> reporter: before there was a wall or a storage business on this corner in cotati there was a house where this woman grew up. >> cotati was a small town. >> reporter: it was on this land her father planted a redwood tree. >> apparently my dad planted it and babied it. he used to protect it. >> reporter: what the family didn't know then the tree was an extremely rare albino redwood and a rare type. >> it two sets of dna. >> reporter: tom stapleton

discovered this genetic wonder with its multicolored needles. there are only ten in the world and only one with cones. >> this is the first observance of female cones on this type of tree ever. and it's quite astounding. >> reporter: pat tappian planted his tree a few yards back it wouldn't have been a fuss. but it's growing in the construction path for the new smart railway. >> it is in the railroad right-of-way and it is much too close to passing trains. >> reporter: railway officials plan to remove the tree after collecting and replanting 1,000 cuttings but stapleton said the cuttings would die and science would lose. >> because if we understand redwood mutation we can understand the health of the forest that could give us clues to climate change that can tell us about the state of our environment. >> reporter: stapleton's working with the city to see if the tree can be removed and replanted in a nearby park. he's also secured a temporary stay of execution. >> we are stepping back and bringing in additional experts to verify the information we've

been given. we're also allowing the time to explore other options if there are any. >> little when we were little, huh? >> smaller. >> reporter: science aside, ramirez hopes the tree will be saved a symbol of a simple childhood and a loving dad with a green thumb. >> he was such a wonderful man and to try to save something that he had, was a part of, is good. >> reporter: joe rosato jr., nbc bay area news. still to come on "today in the bay" -- five pounds of pure cuteness. we'll introduce you to jake coming up.

small. when we did rescue, we had a big surprise next morning and he was the runt of five. and we notice he wasn't developing as quickly as his siblings were, so we does have a vision deficit. but it doesn't impair him at all. >> okay. >> he has no idea. but he's very playful and friendly and frisky and just a wonderful little dog. he's not going to get much bigger than he is right now so he'll also be a little peanut. >> you said about five pounds, huh? >> yeah. he'll stay very small. >> that bone might be the wrong size, lisa. >> i offered the little one and he went for the big one. >> another big dog trapped in a little dog's body. >> absolutely. >> lots of personality. jake is ready to go, 9 months old and ready for an adoption and good for any family? >> yes, he is. probably not with really small children just because of his size, but his personality is
