will be held here at washington high school. and right there around the tree will be dedicated, along with a plaque in honor of sierra, who would have been a senior in high school this year. >> they say time will heal all wounds. well, i will tell you those wounds are very deep. and it's really hard as a mother, as a parent, to have those wounds heal without having the answers. >> reporter: sierra lamar was last leaving for the bus stop the morning of march 16th, 2012. >> it would have been between about 7:00. >> reporter: since then, more than 4,000 volunteers have scoured hundreds of square miles for any sign of her. unwilling to give up hope, a dedicated group of 25 volunteers still search for her every saturday. >> these folks are exceptional people. they stayed in. and said, you know, no matter, we're going to keep searching. we want to bring her home.

6:36 pm
to regain voter support. just a short time ago, inside the hyatt regency, the tea party caucus chanting taxed enough already. they marched around the hotel. republicans represent just 29% of the state's registered voters, and that is down 6 percentage points from a decade ago. the big question for republicans here is how to reach more constituents, particularly latino voters who this month are projected to surpass whites as the largest ethnic group in california. we posed that question to the two leading republican candidates for governor, tim donnelly, who is the tea party favorite, and ex-treasury official, neil cashcari. >> i think we have progressives in charge of california. they want quogovernment to have more control over every aspect of their lives. >> i'm reaching out to all

ethnic backgrounds, latinos, african-americans. i'm the son of immigrants. my family was middle class. i got to live the american dream because i got a good education. i want every kid in california to have the same shot i've had. >> you see the choices before the state gop reflected in these two candidates. donnelly is the founder of a minuteman border patrol chapter, and a tea party favorite. cashcari is fiscally conservative but supports same-sex marriage and voted for president obama in 2008. they feel the party should move farther to the right and be conservative in both the position and candidates the party puts forth. more think the moderate views are the way to go, especially in terms of immigration if they are to sway latinos. two national figures from the republican party made stops here today. former secretary of state condoleezza rice, she spoke at the luncheon today. congressman pete sessions of texas is scheduled to speak at tonight's dinner banquet.

the convention wraps up here tomorrow. monty francis, nbc bay area news. monty, thank you. the new span of the bay bridge has been open for about six months, but the quality of the construction is under fire again. the chp is launching an investigation. it cost more than $6 billion. you can kind of see it there, right off to the right. according to the sacramento bee, chp investigators are trying to find out if cal tran intentionally ignored welding problems in order to finish the bridge on time. the chp did say, though, that at this point this is an administrative investigation, not a criminal investigation. on to a story that continues to develop, the missing plane from malaysia. the investigation is expanding this weekend. that's after authorities said that flight 370 likely veered off its flight plan, because of someone's deliberate actions. authorities are taking a closer look at everyone onboard, from the crew, to the passengers.
6:39 pm
nbc has more from the malaysian capital. >> reporter: it was a sobering news conference here with the malaysian prime minister announcing that they are now confident that that flight 370 was being controlled by someone after it disappeared. >> it left military radar coverage. this movement is consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane. >> reporter: immediately after he spoke, we saw detectives arrive at the home of the pilot. reports say his home was searched. they were there for around two hours. they then moved on, went to the co-pilot's house. and they searched in there, it appeared and then they left with two men who reportedly, or we are told were members of his family. now, the two pilots are one in his 50s, highly experienced.
6:40 pm
he lives in an upscale neighborhood. and he has 18,000 flight hours under his belt. the co-pilot, very different. he is fareed hamid, relatively new, with 2,800 flight hours. he lives with his mom and dad. although he is said to be engaged to be married. so a number of possibilities open still. and a number of questions for investigators, who flew the plane, what motivation did they have, and where did they fly it to. they still have two possible directions that the plane may have gone in. a second news conference in which we were expected to be able to ask some questions here again, dramatically counseled today, and they said they weren't going to hold that. a note of caution, though, it may be that they are holding back information, but this is amongst other things now a police investigation. maybe a good reason they don't want to reveal some of the information they have as parts of the inquiry. back to you.
