5:02 am
electrocution. >> reporter: there were people at home at the time. they all made it out okay, they are not hurt and the fire department tells us they are cooperating with san jose police. the police who are investigating whether or not this pot grow was legal or illegal. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:02. happening now, a navy seal team is guiding an oil tanker back to livia. the ship was hijacked by three libyans earlier this month who tried to sell the oil on the black market. president obama authorized the operation just after 10:00 last night. in a few hours the seals took control of the tanker. the mission took place in international waters no. one was hurt. there are some reports the tanker was flying a north korean flag but north korea denies having anything to do with it. >> deputies look for a castro valley man they think may have murdered his wife. yesterday they issued an arrest warrant for sang mee, that he should be considered armed and

5:04 am
bus driver appeared to make a left turn as the light was turning red. across the sleet are several cameras at this intersection, so one of the things police will look at is footage to try to figure out how this accident happened. police say that the bus was turning from the seventh to mission street when it hit a man believed to be in his 60s, a really frightening thing to see for witnesses who were just standing here as the man's cane, bag and belongings were scattered. the latest such accident in the city, 21 pedestrians died last year in traffic accidents and that's the highest number since 2007. a witness to sunday's accident says it appears that the driver actually sped up as the light turned yellow. >> because there was a few people running through the light, but i have no idea, like i know that the light was changing red and he tried to make the light. he was going faster than what i think he should have been going.
5:05 am

5:32 am
injuries at sf general. police say the man hit is in his 60s hit by a tour bus sunday. the man's cane, bag and other belongings scattered in the street after the accident. and it's just the latest pedestrian accident to happen in the city. there were 21 fatalities last year and that's the highers number since 2007 in san francisco. mayor ed lee recently unveiled a campaign aimed at getting drivers to slow down and pedestrians to watch their surroundings more closely. in november, san francisco voters will decide on a $17 million traffic safety project at several intersections. yesterday's accident really shook up witnesses who saw the victim and the driver. >> i don't even know he knew he hit somebody until he heard the guy or the girl yell. >> reporter: the bus is operated by a tour company called grayline of san francisco which issued a statement saying our

5:34 am
that's where the fire started. this is 10:30 last night when the fire started. there were four people home at the time, they were all able to get out. they ended up pulling out 70 pot plants from this fire. that gives you a sense of how large this operation was. it did take a couple hours for the fire department to nut fire out because of the electrical hazard which did not allow theme get in. they pulled out and took on defense from there. >> electrical bypass usually to grow a marijuana plant it takes a lot of light. >> reporter: so there was the fear of electrocution. pg&e had to turn off the power. it was out for several homes here on lanier lane here in san jose. that power has since been restored. as i mentioned there were people home at the time. they are cooperating with police, san jose police who are
5:35 am
investigating whether or not this pot grow was legal. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a driver is credited with getting neighbors out of their homes when a house went up in flames. he was driving his friends home yesterday morning when he saw this, flames shooting out of this house. he stopped his car, called 911 and ran to the house banging on doors to get neighbors up and out in case the fire spread. the person who owned the home was out of town. they have been notified. investigators say the fire caused significant damage. >> the wife shakes me, get up, get up, something's happening out here. all i could see is red trucks, about six fire trucks. >> feel bad for these people, you know. at least they weren't home, that's good news. boy, that's a tough one. at least they are safe. >> investigators are trying to

welcome back everyone. look at that. a snowy washington, d.c. this morning. a different picture than certainly the bay area where we're seeing very nice temperatures climbing. it's 5:41. hours ago crimea's parliament declared the region an independent state. residents voted to break off from ukraine and join russia. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. this morning with what happens next. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. early this morning the officials in crimea declared themselves an independent state and now some of the lawmakers are traveling to moscow today to try to get russia to annex them, looks like

the parliament may take that up soon. the u.s. not thrilled about this, in a phone call after the vote president obama told president putin it's in violation of international law, something he said before, something that putin ignored before. and that they want to try to work this out diplomatically. no clear path on how. the foreign ministers are working on that, lavrov and secretary of state john kerry. the european union and the u.s. may release names today of individuals who may be targeted for individual sanctions. banning their travel into the united states and into european countries, freezing their assets in those countries, trying to squeeze russia economically into backing down a bit here, not clear yet how many people, though, will be targeted by that. >> new details on the search for a missing malaysia airplane. investigators believe the copilot may have spoke at any
5:43 am
last words heard by ground controllers, those all right, good night. chase cain joins us with the latest. the mystery continues. >> it sure does, this is adding to the confusion. we reported that the final recorded words came after one of the plane's communication systems was disabled but in the past minutes malaysian authorities now saying well maybe those came before the communication system was shut off but they don't know. that is frustrating for the families of the passengers. other reports suggest the plane may have dropped to 5,000 feet and continued flying for some seven hours after contact was lost. that makes the search more difficult in part because the altitude of the plane would determine how far it could have flown. australia has taken the lead in the search in the indian ocean. one theory explored is that someone but the boeing 777 on a popular commercial route to hide
5:44 am
in plain sight. all of that putting the families through quite a difficult time. >> with all of the new developments about the pilots and the amount of fuel and the course changes in their course, the flight path, i feel like the plane's probably been taken somewhere, you know. so that's hopeful. that's good. >> that was the brother of one of the american passengers. families are not hiding their contempt for malaysia's handling of the investigation and the search. while we do not know unfortunately what happened the evidence is mounting that the people responsible for this were either pilots or someone on board with extensive knowledge of the boeing 777. it seems less likely that this was simply an accident. seems like something had to happen. >> seemingly around the radar, how would they know the take the jet off the screen. >> a lot of knowledge required.
