thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm peggy bunker. new details this morning about that missing malaysia airlines plane. the airline now says it is unsure whether the copilot spoke those final words to ground control before or after communication systems were turned off on board. chase cain is live in the studio with more. this is the big question, did they say good night before or after they lost radar? >> that is the million dollar question. and all right good night were the final words. they came in the 30-minute window where the communication was turned off. we don't know which of those two came first. malaysian authorities will not say whether the words were spoken calmly or under stress which could suggest a hijacking. we're in the tenth day of the search for the missing plane and the 239 people on board. australia has taken the lead in the search over the indian ocean, a very large area there. but malaysian media report the plane could have dropped to just

5,000 feet and continued for seven hours to attempt to be avoid being detected by radar though some military radar does reach that low. there is that definite possibility that the plane did not crash and that is giving some hope to the passengers' families. >> i know he's strong, strong guy and smart guy, and he can survive things, you know. he can survive things, he can survive this. he can. he is surviving this. >> that from the brother of one of the american passengers but more than half were chinese citizens and their families you see here are expressing extreme frustration with the handling of both the search and the investigation by malaysian authorities. one of the frightening possibilities here is that this plane may be safely on the land somewhere in the hands of terrorists. u.s. officials are still not ruling that out.

it's just increasing the urgency of the search because of course they don't want this plane to be used to cause more harm. >> it's got to be so agonizing for the families not having the answers they need. >> minute by minute it seems to change. >> thank you so much. >> it's 6:03. today crimea's parliament is officially declaring the region an independent state breaking off from ukraine and planning to join russia. the resolution released this morning's all ukrainian property in the territory on the black sea will be nationalized and become the property of the crimean republic. crimean lawmakers say 97% of residents voted to join russia over the weekend. resolution not recognized by the west and united states and european union preparing sanctions against russia. delegation of crimean lawmakers traveling to moscow today for negotiations on the next step in the annexation process. >> new this morning an elderly man is clinging to life as

police try to track down the driver who slammed into him. overnight milpitas police found an 80-year-old man unconscious in the middle of the road. he was rushed to the hospital and is still in critical condition. take a look at the map where this happened on south park victoria drive at canton drive a half mile from robert randle el elschool. we're told the intersection is now open to traffic after the investigation. here's the police description of the suspect car. it's a newer model gold chevy silverado pickup truck. no word on the license plate number. >> new this morning san jose home goes up in smoke and investigators say it could have been started by illegal wiring from a pot grow. the home is located on lanier lane, it started burning about 10:30 last night. bob is live in san jose close to the burned out home. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you. well, the power back on for the homes here on lanier drive after one of the neighbor's house caught fire last night whan the

fire department here in san jose says was a marijuana grow. if you look at the video you can see firefighters pulling out objects in tarps, some of the roughly 70 pot plants they found in the garage which is where this operation was based. the fire started around 10:30. wasn't until around 12:30 according to one of the captains, two hours t reason it took so long the electric hazard inside. the residents bypassed the electricity to draw more power from the grid to power all of the lights to grow marijuana plants. >> we saw -- we were unable to zur electrical. with live lines it's a hazard to firefighters because there is a risk of electrocution. >> reporter: the fire department had to fight from the outside essentially taking defensive posture. pg&e did have to turn off the power. they weren't able to isolate to

the just this home so they had power out to several homes in this neighborhood. as i mentioned that power is turned back on. there were people at home at the time, they were able to escape. they are okay. according to the fire department they are cooperating with police in their investigation into what was a marijuana grow in this residential home here in san jose. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. >> time to take a look at the forecast. we get new work week rolling, 6:06 looking over downtown san jose. quiet on the streets but we'll be busy later on. all of st. paddy activity over the weekend, i don't know. a lot of parties. >> a lot of people taking it into three days at this point. most of the parade activity was on saturday. san francisco and dublin so. today it might make your monday easier. the mood is lighter in the office. 54 degrees along the peninsula, 55 in the east bay, san francisco is kicking off monday

at 55 degrees so it's not brutally cold but enough for a jacket. something you can peel off later on as temperatures climb into the 70s. the forecast for this monday, cool ocean breeze in san francisco, overall taking temperatures down by 5 to 8 degrees from yesterday on average. 69 in the south bay, sunny and mild. 71 in the tri-valley. really nice for today. 71 with sunshine in the north bay, you are going to see some coastal that you. that should be clearing out by about noon. sunny and mild and nice along the peninsula. you'll get the cool ocean breeze. open the windows in your home and let that good air quality inside. our air quality is slated to suffer tuesday, wednesday and thursday. temperatures are going to climb as offshore flow comes back in the picture. friday, sarmtd and sunday, all the way into next week the next

chance of rain arriving. we'll talk more about that but right now another traffic alert. boy, mike, we can't catch a break. >> we want to get off to a nice start. no reason for this. the crash, this is horrible. westbound 80, as we had another crash cleared, this kicks in for the san francisco side. you sigh traffic getting off the span, you see the cabling there as folks get over land, you see the flag so the buildings there, as you approach the san francisco exit, the fourth street off ramp reports of a crash, it's behind a building we can't see that shot but you see the effects here. you'll see the effect on the speed sensors. slammed down for speed into san francisco. that's what set off the metering lights to be turned on earlier so about quart tear 6, 5:50, the lights were turned ond so there is a slow drive at the bay bridge toll plaza. i turned our camera to the approach as well. you see the berkeley curve, the middle of the screen under east shore at the top of the screen

you see it slowing heading over to the right. that's coming off of 580 out of the maze along that stretch including approaching the toll plaza and the metering lights you are crawling heading to the toll plaza and the span itself. a smoother drive out of the city, better news, i guess. back to the maps, slower drive on the east shore freeway t crowd out of richmond. this is going to build so we'll track, see how long it's going to take to clear. they don't know yet right now in san francisco. looking across the rest of the bay. a smoother bay, northbound 101, starting to slow down. speeds in toward the 65 miles per hour ranges for 87. it's slower than it was. chp is out there today. looking at the tri-valley, in the orange for 580, typical through dublin. back to you. >> 5:09. the red cross helping two people who had to run from their home when it caught fire. it started 18 bedroom at the

home on the corner of johnson street and vera avenue. just after 11:30 last night. it was under control about an hour later. the home is unlivable. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> a driver is credited with getting neighbors out of their homes when a house went up in flames. he was driving his friends yesterday morning when he saw flames coming from this house. you can see completely involved at that point. he stopped, called 911 and ran to the homes banging on doors to get neighbors up and out. the person who owned the home was out of town but has been notified. investigators say the fire caused significant damage. >> the wife comes to the bed and shakes me, get up, get up, something's happening out here. all i can see the red trucks, there was about six fire trucks. >> feel bad for these people.

you know, at least they weren't home, that's good news. boy, that's a tough one. at least they are safe. >> investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started. >> a homeless man is charged with murder accused of stabbing a teenager at a popular park in campbell. police found 24-year-old todd with serious injuries and took him to the hospital. while they were investigating they learned a 16-year-old boy from san jose had been stabbed and taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead. after talking investigators determined he had stopped the teen and he was taken into custody. 6:11. still ahead, dizzying video. >> a rescuer takes the plunge to save a stranded dog out on a 90-foot clip. >> alone and injured down a 250-foot ravine. how a crash victim survived by

communication systems had been shut off. >> police are look forge a hit-and-run driver in milpitas last night on south park victoria drive. the 80-year-old victim is in critical condition at the hospital. >> investigators say a fire in san jose was sparked by a marijuana grow operation. the fire reported just after 10:30 last night on lanier lane. investigators say up to 70 plants were found in the garage. >> people were home at the time. they all managedget out safely and they are cooperating with police. >> at 6:15, a man remains in the hospital this morning with life athletening injuries after being run over in a crosswalk by a tour bus. it happened yesterday afternoon at seventh and missionen san francisco south of market neighborhood. christie smith live at the crosswalk with what witnesses and the tour bus line are saying. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is the latest accident involving pedestrians here in san, this time a man was hit

trying to cross the street. he was in the crosswalk. a bus was turning the corner. investigators tell us what they plan to do is check the footage from cameras to try to piece together how this accident happened. but police tell us that the tour bus was making a left turn onto mission street from seventh early sunday, when it hit the man and witnesses tells us driver didn't even initially realize he hit someone. the man's cane and belongings were scattered in the street after the accident. last year, 21 pedestrians died in san francisco in collisions, that was the highest since 2007. and recently san francisco mayor lee unveiled a plan to try to improve petition safety. voters will also decide on the $17 million safety improvement package. at seventh and mission, one witness says he saw the driver try to speed up and make the light before it turned red. >> there was a few people

running through the light, but i have no idea, like i know that the light was changing red and he tried to make the light. he was going faster than what i think he should have been going. >> reporter: the bus is operated by a tour company called grayline of san francisco. their statement says in part, our company has been in business for 25 years with a perfect safety record. to my knowledge, this is the first incident as such, of course our first concern is for those involved as i mentioned we are fully cooperating with the authorities. the driver is cooperating as well. i believe we mentioned this earlier but that man is still suffering life threatening injuries. at this point it's unclear whether or not the driver will be charged. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a different accident after surviving a pickup truck lunge waiting for help.

39-year-old was a passenger 18 truck when it fell 250 feet over a cliff on lake view road near interstate 5. the driver died but avila survived. it took a day and a half before someone noticed skid marks and called 911. take a look at this photo of a searcher reaching into this truck to get avila out. trues airlifted him out of the ravine. an officer tells a local paper avila expressed how happy he was to be alive. >> along the coast a daring helicopter mission for a dog stranded on the side of a cliff. can you make out the black lab. the owner called police after her dog fell off a cliff. it happened over the weekend north of bodega bay. the rescue took less than three minutes. the dog was flown to the top of the cliff and reunited with its owner. >> you know, wouldn't we all do it for our dog.

>> of course. in a heartbeat. >> for sure. >> those families. >> it's a good thing they rescued that dog because the waves and the rip current just tremendous. >> weed that rip currents, we had sneaker waves and the sonoma coasts that biggest waves. keep that in mind if you are someone who wanted to head to the beach. i can tell you the conditions weren't going to be as stellar. what a beautiful weekend for the beach in the bay area. we're going to cool off. a cold front came through. it's moving out of the bay area and as a result our winds, but temperatures aren't that bad. count on a wind chill fact ir. temperatures today are going to be nice. we're going to end up in the upper 60s to low 70s across the board. even san francisco a comfortable day. cooler than the weekend. mostly sunny and mild, we're

going to hold on to good air quality, then it will suffer a little bit as we head through the midsection of the week and our winds shift. we have a warm-up into thursday. things start to change, our next rain chance moves in. a pretty good looking chance for rain. we have a big pattern change into next tuesday and wednesday. this is the question that posed to me more often, after all we're in a drought. when is gotting to rain, when is it going to rain. well, not for the next five days. it's going to stay dry, we'll cool off by friday. and then things really start to change getting into next week. let's talk about the pattern change. stop the clock, 1:00 p.m. on tuesday. front starting to move in. we stop the clock on wednesday, getting some of that rich moisture up in sonoma county. all of this could change. the championship to get better. or the chance could get slimmer. expect maybe a quarter inch of rain in the south bay.

an inch in the north bay. maybe two to three inches if everything plays out. i'm watching this thing like a hawk. let's find out what mike is watching. happy st. patrick's day. >> thank you. the big parade and traffic was like this. this is the bay bridge off into san francisco. here you see the reason t flares west 80 around fourth street past fourth street in fact is where they have the crash involving three vehicles, minor injuries. that's the good part. no one major injuries but major damage to the cars so taking a while to get those crews out there. the vehicles forcing all of these folks to lose half of your freeway. look at the bay bridge. the spence shores a backup out of the tunnel over to the fourth and ninth street off ramp. there you go t backup there. not a good alternate for you unless you consider the san

mateo. also b.a.r.t. is on time. under the water, that's good stuff into the city. the toll plaza shows metering lights on early. we'll see more slowing out of berkeley and emeryville because of this as well. we hope it clears soon. they depend on when they get the three tow trucks. two sound like they are on the scene. here's your tri-valley with your build, slowing around south 680 starts to show yellow and the orange where we're coming down to 50 miles per hour. no surprises through sunol into the south bay. the south bay, the northbound routes typical. i have this marked we had an early morning crash. there may abcrew throughout but chp did say they cleared the area. the rest of the northbound routes look good. up the peninsula, a hive look

the controversial founder of an anti-gay church is still clinging to life. the reverend fred phelps is in hospice care. his son says he is on the edge of death. the 84-year-old founded the westboro baptist church known for protesting the funerals of soldiers and other public figures with anti-gay sentiment. >> a gun expert testified that months before oscar pistorius killed his girlfriend he went into combat mode after hearing what he thought was an intruder. the manager of a training academy testified he had many conversations with pistorius. the olympian says he shot his girlfriend through the door thinking she was an intruder. prosecutors say it was premeditated. >> it's 6:26. still ahead a statewide amber

also new, willow pass road in concord reopened after a deadly hit-and-run. concord police are looking for a driver who did not only hit a pedestrian but then dragged him across the roadway just before midnight. witnesses say they think the driver who took off from the scene was in a two-tone pickup truck. officers found the pedestrian in the roadway on willow pass road about three miles from the concord b.a.r.t. station. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. >> 6:31, investigators still looking for the southern california couple who reportedly kidnapped their own children, prompting officials to launch a stai statewide amber alert. it was issued saturday after the four children were taken from their grandmother's home in los angeles. this sign alerted drivers to the alert, the two children -- four rather, two boys, ages 5 and 7 and twin 1-year-old girls were in protective custody with their grandmother because their father was reportedly physically abusive. the suspects took off in a dark

pt cruiser with paper plates and missing right rear hub cap. >> a new tipping point in ukraine. today the united states and the european union are taking action against russia, after a crucial vote in crimea. crime qua which sits on the south of ukraine along the black sea. over the weekend people voted to break away and become independent from ukraine until it can become part of russia. tracie potts joins us live in washington, d.c. this morning with new details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. first of all, let's talk about the vote. it's interesting the way they do it there because you drop your ballot in these glass boxes and you can see how people voted, turns out 96% voted in favor of breaking away from ukraine and joining russia. 83% turnout compare to about two-thirds in a presidential election year here. that's a done deal. early this morning they declared

themselves independent. but there could be back lash. the eu leaders decided this morning to impose sanctions on 21 ukrainians and russians who they say have been forcing this process of getting crimea to break away, the u.s. may also issue a list of people facing individual sanctions today as well. finally americans not all too happy about this, some of them. we saw protests in new york over the weekend at the ukrainian embassy. meem do not want people in crimea to break away and become part of russia. that may be what happens, we hear that there are lawmakers headed from crimea to russia today to urge the parliament to go ahead and make this official. >> one to watch. thank you, tracie. >> another live look here at -- the number first. >> we're taking a look at the numbers this morning. dow over 16,000 this morning, up

about 97 points already for the start of the day. we saw the markets start at 6:3 they this morning so one we'll follow. also following the forecast. >> talking to tracie it's amazing she got to work. huge snowstorm in d.c., the opposite as we'll check in with christina loren. many flights canceled in and out of that airport. a lot of schools closed so if you are traveling east you check in with that forecast today. >> let's check our own forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. nice day on tap? >> yeah. i'm trying to find out more about that earthquake in southern california. right now that's the preliminary information we have for you. and we hear it's about eight miles from westwood, probably a city you're familiar with as soon as we get more. in the bay area it's not that bad. we've got a good looking st. patrick's day morning and nice finish. it's breezy, you are going to

find winds strong at the coast and over the open water bridges for the next three to four hours. after which time we'll start to come down significantly. temperatures are going to climb out of the 50s where they are now into the 60s and 70s, expecting 64 in san francisco, cool ocean breeze, microclimate forecast shows you sunny and mild and 69 degrees for your st. paddy's day. nice comfortable conditions, throughout the day today it's looking really good. you notice the difference, about 5 to 8 degrees cooler than where we ended up yesterday. as a result you probably want to bring that jacket with you, and probably have to keep it on at least through mid morning. mostly sunny and mild. good air quality into the midsection. a little bit of a warm-up. the chance for rain returns. i'll show you how that looks on futurecast. right now it's been a busy monday. let's find out if there is

improvement with mike inouye. >> good timing. taking this shot from our chopper over it. you can see the signs off westbound 80, look at this, located really well as you make your way to the split. heading to the embarcadero or continuing down toward 101, one car remains in lanes. i'm not sure if there is one of the three in the earlier crash. you were watching as the last of the lanes, last of the slowdowns is clearing from the san francisco side. thank you for that beautiful shot. we're looking toward the other side of the bay, coming up the incline. you see at the bottom of the screen traveling to the right side. your incline off of where the metering lights or on. that crash has cleared from the san francisco side. very slow. look at our maps, a crawl all the way across from the oakland and toll plaza side. should be improving. b.a.r.t. alternative under the water, alternate is moving smoothly, no delays reported there. the east shore freeway, through

richmond and berkeley, again the bay bridge toll plaza and the berkeley curve and 580 slammed down because of the earlier crashes. moves nicely for monday, around the bay other than the bay bridge a predictable commute. may see more folks because of avoiding the bay bridge. down in the south bay 101 and 87, your typical pattern slowing into the 40s and 50s. north 101 and 87. west 580 slow into dublin and south 680 with a good build. again that pattern slow for pleasanton but we know that's likely on a monday or tuesday. there is a live look at dublin. you do see westbound 580 moving with good spacing. we'll let you more of your top headlines.

welcome back. 6:40, getting you up to speed on this earthquake that happened moments ago reportedly a 4.7 felt strongly near los angeles. many people across the city are saying they felt it very strongly. again about 4.7, close to the ucla campus. >> about five miles east. no reports of damage but a lot describing it as a really quick and strong jolt that they felt. we heard reports of it being felt as far as long beach, costa mesa as well. so most of southern california

waking up to a 4.7 a strong jolt. about 6:26 this morning. look at the seismograph. this is from our sister station in los angeles. it shows the strength of it there. >> it's funny when you read the reports everybody takes to twitter. saying all of los angeles is up and almost everyone saying that jolted me out of bed. we're not hearing reports of damage or injuries, just a lot of people saying that was the second tremor they felt recently. 4.7 reported by the ap. >> actually we're getting word it was downgraded to 4.4. something we're continuing to monitor. coming up, a secret among the ashes, coming up, the hidden stash firefighters found in a burned out house in the south bay. >> plus, the voice behind the final words smoken aboard the missing flight. we tell you what ground control heard as communication links were completely cut off.

good morning to you. breaking news to update you at 6:44. reporting on this earthquake here you can see the seismograph in los angeles saying centered near west wood or about four miles northwest of west wood, a populated area. reports 4.7 now downgraded about

4.4. >> exactly. that just happened. the quake itself was about 6:27 this morning, as you mentioned near ucla's campus. we hear that people felt it as far as long beach and costa mesa. here is a map that gives you a round about of where that area is as well. no reports of damage that we know or injury thus far, certainly reaction as a lot of people starting their day. quite a way to wake up. looking at the graph as well of the quake as it hit. it's a pretty strong jolt is what we're hearing people describe it there in southern california. >> quick and fast jolting them out of bed. i'm reading a tweet that was only 4.4 i'm moving because it was very strong and very quick. and basically that's how much of los angeles awoke to this earthquake. you can see on the graph how profound it was. quite alarming. >> not a fun way for people to wake up. sadly quite familiar in california we might add as well.

radar. chase, this is a jaw dropping statement. >> absolutely. there is one big question to be answered, that is did the final reported words of the copilot come before or after the plane es communication was disabled. were those words also calmly or under stress. officials will not say. the search does continue for the missing boeing 777 in its tenth day. the search over an area twice the size of the u.s. australia has taken the lead in the search over the indian ocean in that part but complicating these are reports that the plane may have dropped to 5,000 feet and flown on for seven hours after contact was lost. one theory being that someone put is 777 on a popular route to blend in and avoid suspicions.
