designer lauren scott, mick jagger's long time girlfriend as the rolling stones put their tour on hold. and get your tickets, tonight's megamillions lottery soars to $400 million, the third largest ever. and dreamers are lining up at a shot of the massive jackpot, "today," tuesday, march 18th, 2014. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. >> everybody okay? anything to announce? >> you know, i had such a great night's sleep. >> good. natalie, you all right? >> i'm good. >> make sure we have no major changes of life. >> nope, none to report. but we do have big news this morning. today's top story. and it is that deepening mystery, flight 370, with each passing day, any new information only seems to lead to more questions.
7:02 am
and that is the case today. nbc's tom costello covering this investigation from the beginning. good morning to you. >> sources confirmed to nbc news that whoever was flying the plane used the onboard computer system to make the u-turn and then later to bank a hard right up the strait. it was a very smooth turn, and that would take somebody with intimate knowledge of the boeing aircraft. meanwhile, we've talked about the two corridors, search corridors. one to the north up here and one to the south down here. malaysia airlines says its two pilots had never flown these routes, these zones before. they've broken these two search zones down into seven quadrants each. and each quadrant is 160,000 square nautical miles. the australian search zone down here off the coast of australia, that's the sign of maine. in the indian ocean, the u.s. navy is now scaling down its search operations. the destroyer "uss kidd" will
7:03 am
soon stop searching leaving only the p-3 aircraft in the skies above. >> really kind of an amazing thing to think about. but it could be here. >> reporter: this morning, 11 days later, still no hint of where the plane might be. >> the entire search area is now 2.24 million square nautical miles. this is an enormous search area. and it's something that malaysia cannot possibly search on its own. >> reporter: malaysian authorities have come under criticism for contradicting themselves. now saying a critical communication system did not shut down before the co-pilot's last radio call. so here's the mystery flight's most updated time line. flight 370 leaves at 12:41 a.m. at 1:07 a.m., the last automated acars data transmission. the next transmission scheduled for 30 minutes later never comes. at 1:19 a.m., the co-pilot radios "all right, good night," as air traffic controllers hand
7:04 am
him over to vietnamese controllers. two minutes later, something happens. at 1:21 a.m., someone in the cockpit turns off the transponders. the plane then turns around. at 2:15 a.m., the last military radar contact. all that's left are those six pings being transmitted somewhere along two very long arcs to the north and south. the last one at 8:11 a.m. meanwhile, the families of the missing can only wait. >> for the first couple days, all i could do was replay memories and, you know, see him and, you know, open his closet and smell the clothes. >> reporter: in beijing, phillip wood's girlfriend believes he's still alive and has started a facebook campaign for flight 370. while in texas, woods' brother waits for the phone to ring. >> hang on, brother. he can survive this. he can. he is surviving this. >> also this morning, china claims it has looked into the background of the chinese nationals onboard the plane and says there's no evidence any of

them were involved in a hijacking. the focus remains for now on the flight crew. back to you. >> tom costello in washington for us, thank you. >> we're attempting to cover the story from all angles. let's turn to keir simmons following the investigation from kuala lumpur. he's outside the home of flight 3 p 370's pilot. keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. this is the upscale neighborhood where the pilot lives. you can see, it is a gated community. it even has security guards, friends of the pilot are questioning why someone who lives like this would ever be involved in the disappearance of flight 370. each day, the mystery surrounding the pilot zaharie shah deepens. we now know he has two homes. why would a well-off pilot hijack his own plane, friends ask? >> i will not believe anything
7:06 am
until there's concrete evidence. >> with his character and what we knew of him, just wouldn't make any sense. >> those close to him produced this youtube tribute to the captain. this man from oregon has known him for 18 years. >> bright, intelligent, inquisitive. >> and a family man, three children and a grandchild. >> they're feeling pretty isolated, i think. >> at captain zaharie's local mosque today, prayers for flight 370, the pilot seemed happy days before he and his plane disappeared. >> the last time i met captain zaharie was a week before the incident. i bumped into him in the streets and he was his normal self. >> and he is reported to have a girlfriend, also a pilot. why would he be involved? and reports that a passenger who works as a plane engineer is under investigation. police say everyone onboard is being looked at.
7:07 am
pilots, crew, passengers, as they try to solve this unprecedented case. and unprecedented means police have to investigate absolutely everyone, even a pilot who lives in a community like this. savannah? >> all right. keir simmons, thank you very much. robert hager was a long-time correspondent for nbc news and covered dozens of air disasters. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. >> and 12 days in, we still have no trace of this airplane. i mean, does that fact alone surprise you that this still -- >> absolutely. absolutely. 25 years of covering this stuff. i never knew a case this far out and you've got virtually nothing. you know, a few radar hits, those little pings, and that's it. so this is really unprecedented. this kind of mystery. >> let's talk about some of the different things we've learned in the last 24 hours. we now know that change in course was actually programmed through a computer system in the
7:08 am
cockpit by someone knowledgeable, presumably. what does that tell you? what do you make of that? >> that's further evidence that the spotlight's got to be on the cockpit, the co-pilot. whoever did this, programming that turn into there, intentionally into the computer. they had to know what they were doing. >> could one pilot make that change in programming without the other pilot knowing? >> that would be pretty hard to do. it could be done. but i think that the other pilot must already have been disabled or something at that point. >> all right. let's talk about this search area. it is vast. you can actually throw this map on the screen. the plane would need 5,000 feet of runway to land. if you look at these projected flight paths, 634 runways spread across 26 countries that would meet that criteria. what do you think of this theory it's landed somewhere and no one knows? >> i think nothing of it. i think that's just not a good theory at all. 777, you can't land it some place and hide it for 11 days now, 12 days.
7:09 am
it's just inconceivable to me. you hate to say that to the families because, of course, they're going to grasp at any straw for hope. but i don't think you could have landed this plane and hidden it somewhere all this time. >> another theory getting some traction that this rise in altitude, this rapid assent and descent would've served to incapacitate the passengers onboard which may account for how a pilot or hijackers would be able to control people on board. >> that's a pretty difficult scenario, really, to imagine they'd all be overcome and unconscious and up in the cockpit crew. they're okay. and those high-altitude readings are somewhat suspect. that's not for certain that the plane really went to those extremes. >> it calls for speculation, but is this one of those situations where we may never know what happened? >> all those years of covering crashes, i always was careful not to say that because a lot of these crashes, three and four years out, they got the magic answer. and i always thought the investigators are going to figure out what happened. this one, they may not. they may not.
7:10 am
we may never know. >> bob hager, always fascinating to get your perspective. thank you, good to see you. we want to hear from you. everything you want to know about this flight, what could have happened. we know our viewers have a lot of questions. we do, too. head to our facebook page today, send us your questions. tweet us with the #orangeroom. and we're going to do our best to answer as many as we can tomorrow morning on "today." for the moment, though, back to matt. let's turn to the crisis in ukraine. the u.s. and its allies are stepping up pressure on russia over its intervention there. but so far, vladimir putin is not backing down. in fact, quite the opposite. he's delivering his own message to the world right now. andrea mitchell is nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. joe biden flew overnight to poland. and that's the first stop on a trip to reassure neighboring ukraine that the u.s. has their back. russia's neighbors need reassurance because so far
7:11 am
vladimir putin has outflanked the u.s., gaining control over his prized crimea where people are celebrating their alliance with russia. and despite u.s. and european sanctions, putin is defiant. the kremlin's state-run tv anchor even suggested russia is the only country in the world that is able to turn the usa into radioactive ashes. the administration is threatening more sanctions against putin's inner circle and russia's arms industry if russia moves further into eastern ukraine. >> going forward, we can calibrate our response based on whether russia chooses to escalate or deescalate the situation. >> reporter: but john mccain says what ukraine needs is u.s. military aid. >> you can give them anti-air equipment, give them a tank, help out with training. i would send some of our military to kiev and find out how we can best assist them. >> reporter: and president obama's recent ambassador to russia does not disagree. >> all new options have to be on
7:12 am
the table. and most importantly, we have to make sure that the ukrainian state and the ukrainian economy does not fail. >> reporter: so what will stop putin, experts say, not sanctions. >> if the united states doesn't do much more than it has with these fairly moderate sanctions, especially if russia takes the radical step of annexing crimea, then the u.s. prestige and power could really take a hit. >> and the perception of u.s. power is taking a real hit. at least in moscow, today, as putin telling his parliament to take the final steps annexing crimea by the end of this week. that is rubber stamping, of course, what putin and his troops have already done. matt and savannah? >> all right. andrea mitchell in washington on this. thanks very much. >> meanwhile, natalie is following new trouble for general motors this morning. general motors' new ceo apologizing once again after another round of recalls for the nation's largest automaker.

this time more than 1.5 million vehicles are involved including buick enclaves, gmc acadias and chef chevy traverses. also on the list, newer cadillac xtss. gm says it knows of no accidents related to the latest set of recalls. in a video statement, ceo mary berra said an intense review is underway. this is the second ranging recall this year. >> there will be a protest and picket lines today in a protest over low wages. part of an ongoing campaign by labor groups to build support for a minimum wage of $15 an hour and to bring attention to the rights of low-wage workers. president obama is pushing for a hike in the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, that's up from the current pay of $7.25. a dramatic rescue caught on camera after a man found himself clinging to his car in the middle of a raging river. this happened in washington state.
7:14 am
a witness saw the driver veer off the road and into the river. he called 911 and kept the driver calm until help arrived. a passenger did make it to shore who was apparently also in that vehicle. rescuers used a boat to pull the driver to safety. he was taken to the hospital for hypothermia. police are trying to figure out how he ended up in the river. it is the discovery that many astronomers are calling the holy grail to the big bang theory. researchers found strong evidence of what they say happened a split second after the big bang almost 14 billion years ago. it shows the newly formed universe expanded so fast it left behind waves in the fabric of the cosmos. this is considered another step in understanding how the universe started and evolved into galaxies and stars. theme parks have a flair for the dramatic, but probably not what they had in mind. the giant circular fish tank in the middle of the orlando restaurant sprung a leak sending gallons and gallons of water streaming out.
