australian satellite images show what appears to be two large objects possibly parts of the missing plane floating in the ocean. bob redell is in the newsroom with the latest on this search. good morning. >> good morning. in spite of 21st century radar and satellite technology the first two aircrafts to go out and look for the dehave come back empty handed. that part of the indian ocean is so bad t conditions, rough seas, poor visibility. they are looking for what you see here on your tv screen, two white objects that could be debris from malaysian flight 370, one object is about 75 to 80 feet across, the other is roughly 16 feet. these were spotted four days ago by a commercial satellite, the reason it took so long to announce this discovery is because it took a while to analyze the imagery. the fact that australia's prime minister announced the discovery demonstrates the level of confidence the authorities have in this. the prime minister calling this

quote new and credible. the debris was first spotted about 1400 miles southwest of perth, australia, it is obviously since drifted away from the initial location but is still in a very remote part of the world, this is a part that aviation experts think that 777 aircraft if it did go down, could have gone down in that location. >> there is a belief and that belief requires us overnight, that gives us hope. as long as there is hope we'll continue. >> these are the resources right now that are headed to the area. they sent the u.s. navy sent a p-8 krarkt, australia a p-3 that returned, we did get word a norwegian vessel arrived and will begin a search. australia has a vessel headed to the area. it's so far out it's going to not be until sunday until it

police are looking for suspects but so far no leads. chase cain is live from the street where it happened. so chase, tell us what went down. >> reporter: a pretty scary thing on canada drive. it was 9:00 a.m., so day light hours monday. this woman heard a knock at the door. the person identified as a ups man. she opened the dear. police say that four or five men forced their way inside the home. one of them had a gun and held the woman at gunpoint while the other men tied her up, a source told nbc bay area the woman had been tied up with duct tape on her hands and feet and her mouth. so she would not make noise while they ransacked the home, stealing items from the home and then they left. right now milpitas police do not believe that this was a random thing. they think that this home may have been targeted but it's still unsettling for the neighborhood. >> it's something that i never

thought would happen here. because this is a really good neighborhood. but i'm just -- i was very shocked to get the call. >> reporter: unfortunately, milpitas police do not have a very good description at all of the men who burst into the home early monday morning. so of course they hope that someone out there may be able to provide information. we should also point out that this is the very same street with the mayor of milpitas lives, we're told he is aware of what happened and that he is confident that milpitas police will be able to make an arrest. we're live this morning on canada drive. chase cain, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> at 5:05 uc san francisco is notifying thousands of people of a data breach. the alert comes after computers were stolen from a medical clinic. christie smith joins us live with the latest on this investigation g. morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. nearly 10,000 people are going to get these letters that their personal information may have been compromised because

computers were stolen from the medicine center, this is off site from the main campus. but those computers that we're talking about do contain some personal information as well as health information. the center is on slope near sunset. it learned on january 13th that the theft had recently occurred. and they say that the university police were notified right away and an investigation revealed that some information included names, birth dates, medical record numbers, driver license numbers and 125 social security numbers. they stress there is no evidence that any one has tried to access or use this information. they say that the state attorney general and the department of public health have been notified about this as well as the feds and a hot line set up for people with questions or concerns about their information. that is 1-888-236-0299.

they are saying that credit monitoring is available for those whose social security numbers might have been compromised. >> san jose firefighter accused of drug crimes is expected to enter a plea. mario was was arrested and accused of sex with a minor and having methamphetamine. the district attorney decided not to file sex abuse charges but will not say why t.d. a. did file drug charges saying that he tried to sell meth to an undercover officer. the 20 year veteran firefighter and outreach officer with the san jose fire accident on unpaid lead. >> a man is in jail accused of stealing $400,000 of fine wine. deputies say that jose penas stole 350 cases totaling 4200 bottle from the warehouse he

worked at. when they arrested him at his apartment investigators say they found some of that stolen wine as well as $73,000 they think came from black market wine sales. >> another bay area county is asking people to cut back on water use. the contra costa water district is asking for a voluntary 15% cutback. there will be no penalties for people who fail to neat goal b. 250,000 customers will all be affected by the request. >> as you watch your plants wither there is some sunlight i should say showers in the forecast. which will be good news for us. >> yeah, you know we're also putting together a very dynamic drought special. the weather team has been working on this, it's going to air on the first week of april. i can tell you right now that simultaneously we're expecting quite an active pattern here in the bay area so. there is more rain on the horizon. and we have fantastic ways for

you to combat the drought and they are really easy. 53 degrees in oakland, at 54 in mountain view, clear and breezy today, it's going to be nice. really nice. right off the bat we're in the 50s about 10 degrees milder in many cities, than 24 hours ago. bright sunshine this afternoon for the first official day of spring, and then the coastal low clouds are going to return as we head into the evening. you'll notice that fog starting to creep over the coastal mountains by about 7:00. as a result of the onshore flow temperatures will drop off. this is the peek of that warming trend. peninsula at 78, 71 another gorgeous day in the low 70s for san francisco. like i said before not as much sunshine with the clouds returning early. 79 degrees out in the tri-valley, 72 for the east bay and wine country could not be prettier. everything green, gorgeous conditions. 77 degrees, a little warm in the heat of the afternoon. highs come in about 3:00 p.m. let's check your drive. >> a live look out here, the

over the area for hours, so far pilots do not see anything. bob redell is in our newsroom keeping track of the search as it happens. he's going to have a live report in a few minutes. national hispanic university lost its fight to stay open. the private university in east san jose plans to close next year. the university president tells the "mercury news" it will try to offer courses until the 600 students currently enrolled graduate or transfer. four years ago national hispanic university purchased by the private college chain hopes to use the campus as a new charter school, teachers academy and research institute. the university stopped enrolling new students in january because of its financial troubles. >> the fed continues to cut back stimulus. hampton pearson at the washington, d.c. bureau with all of the details for us. good morning. >> hi, laura.

futures started out flat, they have gone negative after stocks snapped the two-day rally wednesday t markets selling off following the fed decision. most of the news was expected. the fed continues to cut back on its stimulus program and dropping a threshold pegged to the unemployment rate to determine when it might start raising interest rates. inors focus on comments from janet yellen who suggested that first rate hikes could come as soon as next spring, that is earlier than markets anticipated, look for data today on unemployment and existing home sales t dow dropping 114 to close at 16,222, the nasdaq closing at tour 307. back to you. have a great day. >> hampton, i like that tie. looking sharp. >> thank you. >> is there anything not to like about hampton pearson? >> we think hampton is sharp. >> also looking nice is there anything not to like about this forecast? >> well, a couple things, pollen

levels are going to go up. essentially the little ones too, you feel so bad for them. it's one of those things either you are allergic or you're not. and a lot of times people are coming in sniffling, half the newsroom is doing okay. the pollen levels aren't that high now but what i can tell you is they are going to creep up through this weekend. so keep that in mind. right now we're doing okay, temperatures mostly in the 50s, headed to the upper 60s by lunch time. then we're going to level off your temperatures as we head throughout the second half of the day and the onshore flow returns. it's off shore flow that kept us warm. throughout the day today coastal low clouds will roll in as we head throughout the evening so temperatures right now pretty mild out there. mostly in the 50s headed to the upper 70s. peninsula at 78, 79 degrees out in the tri-valley. we're still counting on the rain. here's the great news. i have not had to change these expected totals by that much. we're counting on generous totals as we head through next

week so starting late tuesday into wednesday, thursday and friday, we have at least 40% chance for rain across the bay area. it's only just beginning as that storm track stays south for the first week of april. we're going to get the long-range forecast coming up. here is mike inouye and your drive. >> all right. first of all happy upcoming spring. we're also see a slowdown soon. the speeds looking good, look at this t green, that speed limit for northbound 101, both directions just south of the downtown area. we're going to watch that but it should clear up. here i marked where there is a sharks game. hoping for a victory. i want everybody to think about that throughout the day. southbound 17, passing by the summit you're all right. farther south there may be tree limbs in the roadway. so far a little bit of slowing at the summit and nothing

compelling television. i don't even have a cat, i really highly recommend it. 53 in the east bay. 55 in san francisco. and 43 degrees in the north bay. temperatures end up in the upper 70s so it's going to be nice and warm out there. and yeah, he has got a really cool beard, have you seen that? are you familiar with the guy from my cat from hell? >> you know what, i've seen that show once in a while, then that confirms why we don't have a cat. we do have a commute, we'll look at fremont. southbound 880, not much of one. it's a smooth flow of traffic. easy drive for the headlights past the truck scales. a look at the bay really light as far as the incidents reported. no crashes blocking any lanes around the bay. we have slowdown which has started out of the altamont pass through livermore for westbound 84 around your typical slow north through sunol. we show the slowing from the bottom of the screen but that should clear up. i'll track that along with your approach to the bay bridge.

that debris was spotted in the indian ocean west of australia, two planes have reported back about what they found, bob redell has been watching this all morning long and joins us with the latest. >> unfortunately they didn't find anything. a usp 8 and australian craft returned in the past hours and in spite of their efforts using sophisticated radar they found nothing. perhaps this map can help explain why. the search has been so difficult so far. a commercial satellite spotted the debris about 1400 miles southwest of perth, australia, but that was four days ago, searchers are now guessing where it drifted to and add to the fact there are bad conditions, nine-foot seas, 25-knot winds, poor visibility. looking for two whitish objects on the surface of the indian ocean, one from 75 to 80 feet in length, the other roughly 16 feet. last night australia's prime minister announced this is,

quote, new and credible evidence of possible debris from malaysian flights 370 which disappeared 12 days ago. what makes the sighting even more credible is this is in the general area where some aviation experts think the 777 aircraft might have gone down. >> this is a lead, it is probably the best lead we have right now, but we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them to know whether it's really meaningful or not. >> the reason it took so long to announce this from four days ago, took time to analyze the imagery. a norwegian vessel has reportedly just arrived in the area to begin its search. the australian navy is sending a vessel. a cargo ship has been diverted. more planes will head out which will deploy drift markers to track the current so they can estimate where the debris was and might be headed.

facility on slope boulevard. unencrypted computers with names, birth dates, mailing addresses, driver's license numbers, even 125 social security numbers were also on those desk top computers. so far though ucsf is saying there is no evidence that any one has tried to access or use the information taken in that theft. but they have also sent out letters to almost 10,000 people letting them know what is going on. they have notified federal investigators, the state attorney general and also the department of public health. they have set up a hot line. that is 1-888-236-0299. to assist people worried that their personal information may have been compromised. they are also saying that credit monitoring is available for those who had their social security numbers on those computers. christie smith, "today in the

bay." >> thanks so much. >> students from city college of san francisco say they will hold a peaceful vigil in response to protests that turned violent. about a week ago, last week, 250 protesters were trying to get into the school's administration building. plus blocked the door. both sides began shouting. one officer pepper sprayed a student. the protesters wanted a special trustee to resign and wanted to end a new policy requiring payment of class fees up front. >> ccfs chancellor asking for an independent review of the response to the protest. he says the college must do more to promote a quote open, free, safe and respectful dialogue on campus. he will present possible initiatives to the council in order to achieve that goal. >> people living in one peninsula community say they have been waking up tired for

weeks. they are fed up. neighbors say someone has been setting off what sounds like professional fireworks every night for two weeks. families say they can't sleep because it sounds like bombs. they hope it ends before a fire starts or someone gets hurt. >> you don't know if they are gun shots or what, which we find out they are fireworks in the end. >> i'm worried about the explosions because that mean just so loud, i'm thinking it might do some damage. >> the san mateo sheriff's office plans to put more deputies in the area. >> the los altos hills council will get a plan today for a controversial signal. 300 people in the hills have all signed a petition asking the council to shut down the project. the project would add traffic

signals at the page mill road exit, critics say it would jeopardize the hometown feel of the area. >> let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's got a look at our forecast. a nice one? >> it's going to be stellar. we're bringing in spring, it's going to be really nice out there. the only thing is, you might not like, it will be very warm. warmer than yesterday. so if it was too warm yesterday tack on a couple of degrees. we're going to crash those into the weekend as we have an area of low pressure that will bring us much-needed rain by this time next week. 46 degrees in half moon bay. milder to start the day. hook at your 24 hour temperature change. 10 degrees milder, it's a noticeable difference. you'll feel that. temperatures across the bay area because we're starting out so much milder will easily end up just about as farm if not warmer in our bay area regions.

78 degrees, peninsula at 78, 71 in san francisco, the north bay at 77 degrees, right at room temperature with a breeze. and then a nice clear day in the tri-valley, 79 degrees out there. comfortable conditions. we're tracking that rain into next week. this is what you can expect from from shower activity. it will be robust, it's going to come in from the pacific and slam the north bay, then move into the south bay thursday, wednesday into thursday, even friday next week. then as we head into the first week of april we bring the storm track back so next week is not our only opportunity for rain. there's a lot going on around the bay area. always looking for those. we'll talk about those, what's happening around the bay this weekend. you got to work for the weekend. >> you do. last weekend we had a lot of

we continue to follow breaking news this morning. debris from the missing malaysian jet possibly spotted in the indian ocean off the coast of perth, australia. search planes and ships are trying to verify if those parts belong to the missing plane. tracie potts is in washington with the role the u.s. is playing in this search. good morning. >> reporter: laura, a u.s. navy plane went out early this morning and turned around and

said they couldn't find anything. take a look. the debris are two pieces that showed up on australian satellite image, one 15 feet long t other 80 feet long. it's not clear whether this is connected to the plane. the royal air force went out, australia saying they had visibility problems this morning with that search so. there are a couple of ships headed in that direction as well. they should have technology that can look beneath the surface and get closer to see if in fact there is any debris in the area. speaking of that area, we're talking about an extremely isolated region of the southern indian ocean. in fact, authorities in saw stralia says it's the most isolated place on earth. one official said it's about 4,300 miles away from where that plane was last seen. so the search continues around kuala lumpur on both sides of

the indian ocean, this new search to try to identify this debris in the southern indian ocean. >> fascinating to see. thank you so much. >> investigators who say the suspect who killed a northern california sheriff's deputy did not commit suicide as thought. they say the suspect rick ardo cheney was shot and killed by authorities. he is accused of carjacking a bmw in oregon, locking the driver in the trunk yesterday morning. the driver escaped but it's unclear how. hours later a deputy tried to pull cheney over but he took off. deputies and officer from ft. bragg cornered him and deputy ricky dell was killed in a shootout. >> police are searching for suspect this morning after a violent home robbery in the south bay. chase cain is live in milpitas. this is really a normally quiet

neighborhood, where the mayor lives. this is surprising news. >> reporter: it is. this is the street where the mayor live, one neighbor said that this is a good neighborhood so it comes as a surprise, also may be a little surprising it happened in daylight. nearly 9:30 in the morning on monday. that's when a woman here on canada drive says that she heard a knock at the door t person identified themselves as a ups delivery man so the woman opened the door. four or five men forced their way in, one had a gun and held the woman at gunpoint. the other men tied her up. a source says the woman was duct taped around her hands, feet, even her mouth while the men ransacked the home stealing items. police were able to show up a few minutes later. by that point the men were gone. >> initial investigation reveals that we do have some indications this was not a random act.
