thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm peggy bunker. we do have breaking news in the search for the missing malaysian airlines plane looking at satellite images that started this new search, two objects spotted off the coast of australia west of perth now looking for any kind of debris that could be linked to the missing flight 370. take a look at the area we are talking about. it's actually remote part of the indian ocean about a four-hour flight from australia's southwestern coast. bob, have the searches uncovered this debris? >> unfortunately so far not yet. good morning to you. part of the problem in trying to find this is that it's located in a very remote part of the indian ocean. it's not that they haven't tried. it's hard to find. it's about 1400 miles southwest of perth, australia. aircraft have returned from the area with knew sighting of the

debris a. norwegian ship has arrived. that's going to take time. the australian navy sending a vessel. a cargo ship has been diverted and once the sun comes up a c-130 will deploy electronic buoys. so searchers can get a better sense where this was and where it's headed. you imagine the difficulty in finding this. an enormous object and the objects are relatively small. both pieces are white, floating on or just below the surface of the ocean. one is 75 to 80 feet, the other 16 feet. it was spotted four days ago southwest of perth, australia. in the general location where they think flight 3 sofrn could have gone down.

>> and that requires us overnight to be very fine and corroborative. as long as there is hope wile continue. >> it was australia's prime minister who announced the discovery last night, calling it credible evidence, but not definitive. this debris was spotted along a shipping route which means it could be something that shell off a ship. the reason it took four days they needed the time to look over the imagery. it's a time consuming process and researchers don't have much of, they estimate the batteries allowing the black boxes to ping, this is could run out in 19 days. >> i understand they last about a month. to find this debris the weather is impacting. i understand all stralia closed

debris caught fire between the intersection of university and san pablo avenue. now one side of the building was charred but no structural damage. >> thousands of uc san francisco. computers were stolen from a clinic. christie smith joins us with more details on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. nearly 10,000 parents are going to get these unsettling letters that their personal and health information was on these desk top computers that was stolen in january. from an off sight location t family medicine center. the burglary it is believe happened in mid january. they are saying that can include namesing birth dates, driver's

curve. the rest of your approach pretty standard. the earlier slowing approaching has cleared the earlier stall looks like it's cleared. north of the san mateo or dumbarton bridges. on the ride side typical slowing, we'll look at these speeds and we have the orange zone out of almost into dublin. a smooth drive for south 680. speed into the south bay or the northbound routes so they are just starting to kick in. on average you're at the speed limit. we'll show you a look, give you palo alto, nobody, a smooth drive in both directions, no delays between the south bay and the city. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. breaking news from the north bay, investigators on the scene of a deadly county.

a person was found shot to death at cam bround. this happened near the lawson area of dylan beach. so far no word on what led to the shooting but they are questioning two who knew the victim. >> a woman tied up as robbers ransack her home. what excuse the men used to force their way inside that home.

an update to breaking news in the search for the missing plane. take a look at the new search area crews are honing in on right now. compared to the flight path the malaysian plane should have taken. the new search area is in a

remote part of the indian ocean about four hour flight away from australia's southwestern coast. crews have wrapped up for the day but will be back tomorrow to determine if two large objects spotted are linked to the flight. these are the objects that we're talking about. one about 80 feet long, the other about 15 to 16 feet long. >> at 6:14. other top stories, german chancellor merkel says the european union is ready to issue more sanctions against russia. merkel says that the g-8 forup has been suspended until the situation changes. vladamir putin was set to host his counter parts including president obama at a summit in sochi in june. >> firefighters are wait until first light to continue fighting a 300 acre wild fire along the central coast. the fire started early yesterday morning by a property owner trying to clear land.

strong winds caused the flames to spread. >> ucsf offers assistance including credit monitoring to thousands of patients. computers containing names, birth dates, even social security numbers were stolen from the center at lakeshore. >> and police in the south bay are on the lookout for the men involved in a violent home robbery. this happened in milpitas on canada drive near highway 237, that's the same neighborhood where the mayor lives. chase cain is live there with the latest on this investigation. good morning to you, chase. >> reporter: good morning. the mayor does live here on this street and neighbors say this is generally a very quiet street. but monday morning a woman got a frightening surprise when she heard a knock at the door before 9:30 monday morning so we're talking about daylight hours. she heard a knock, the man on the other side identified himself as a ups delivery man.

four or five men burst in, one of them had a gun and held the woman at gunpoint while the other men tied her up. a source tells nbc bay area the woman was duct taped around her hands feet and mouth to keep her from making noise while the men ransacked the home. they did steal several items from the house. right now milpitas police say that they believe this home was targeted. >> our initial investigation reveals that we do have some indications this was not a random act, but again, our investigators are work hard to try to find out if that's true or not. >> it's something that i never thought would happen here because this is a really good neighborhood. but i'm just -- i was very shocked to get that call. >> reporter: police were here in a matter of minutes but the four or five men were gone and unfortunately detectives do not have a very good description of

the men so they hope that maybe someone in the area saw something and can give them a call. hopefully give police a tip. we mentioned the mayor does live on the street. we're told he is aware of what happened monday morning and that he's confident that milpitas police will make arrests very quickly. chase cain, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. >> time to check the forecast as we give you a live look outside san francisco along the beautiful embarcadero this morning. so inviting on this first day of spring. a nice day in san francisco no doubt. >> that's got to be one of the best commutes, you get the ferries, go to work on a beautiful day. >> not a bad drive. just in san francisco, just to be able to see the bridges like we have been able to, such a treat. as you know, we've got the month of april and then we start that may gray trend. you know june gloom as well. so embrace them while they last. we still have pretty good

play a factor into this afternoon. you'll see what's happening in san francisco. arrows start to push on shore. we have a competing wind direction out of the east bay. offshore flow for most of the bay area. a little reversal from the wind direction that means it will be cooler toward the end of the day. the ocean breeze will return but not before we hit the upper 70s. 78 in the south bay. peninsula sunny and warm. it's going to be nice up there, 79 degrees, beautiful day along the marin county coast. 72 for the east bay and 77 degrees, last day of that warmth in the tri-valley. sunny for the first weekend in spring. you want to make outdoor plans, we're going to get into some events. this is what you can expect. comfortable, a touch cooler but about room temperature on saturday in the north bay. in the south bay at 74 degrees. you don't have to feel guilty about this rain excuse me all of the sun in the forecast because there is rain on the heels of

this big area of high pressure. it heads out of here and we get what we call the atmospheric river. that's a game changer. that could provide 3-plus inches of rainfall in the north bay next week so. mark your calendar late tuesday through friday next week, the storm track returns and we're so happy about it. here is our own mike inouye. >> rolling on the atmospheric river and the commute we're moving smoothly. the north bay, the peninsula we have a typical plan, coming up on 280, out of daily city into san francisco there is a new crash. no major injuries but chp has to get there. we may have bess changes, slowing in both directions. typical on the city side. on the east bay we have metering lights on at the bay bridge and a slow drive at the berkeley curve out of the maze, north 880

nothing unusual. nothing unusual for the rest of the approach out of the northern east bay, we're looking for your build, typical southbound 880, and heading down to the san mateo bridge a typical commute route. so we'll take you over to the tri-valley. really into livermore but dublin holding steady. good news off westbound 84 no. problems down to sunol for south 680, showing in 20 minutes. so get on the road if you can down into the south bay. i saw slowing here and in san jose so we'll pick those out. north 880 through fremont past the truck scales. we saw things bog down but we saw the cars moving so that's adjustment. southbound shows the build as you pass by. north 101 does show that burst, the second of the morning, this will stick.

german chancellor angela merkel says the european union is ready to issue further sanctions against russia and the g 8 forum has been suspended. vladamir putin was set to host the counter parts including president obama in sochi in june. earlier this week the european union and the u.s. slapped sanctions on a handful of people but merkel said they would increase to level 2 sanctions later today. those would widen the list of people whose assets are being frozen and are banned from traveling. >> four men accused of gang raping a photographer in india could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison or more a. judge is expected to hand down the sentences tomorrow. the 22-year-old photographer was on assign wmt a male colleague at an abandoned building when the men beat the man, tied him up and raped the woman. the men could end up spending the rest of their lives behind

bars. >> detectives are taking a fresh look at the disappearance of madeleine mccann, 3 years old when she disappeared on vacation with her family 18 portuguese town in 2007. now scotland yard is investigating whether her disappearance is led to a string of other crimes near the resort where the toddler vanished. detectives say five british youngsters were sexually assaulted by a man who broke into their holiday apartments in that area. it happened between 2004 and 2007 involving young white girls between 7 and 10 years old. take a look at this picture. the attacker wore a burgundy long sleeve shirt with a white shirkle on the back. >> isn't that interesting. that family has never given up. amazing. >> 6:26. we're moments away from the opening bell and wall street's reaction to the fed announcement about interest rates. >> new developments on breaking news, possible debris from the malaysia flight 370 spotted in

the indian ocean, satellite spotted this debris about 1400 miles southwest of perth, australia, bottom center of your screen. one reason searchers haven't found it yet the seas are rough, visibility is poor. tracie potts has been following this from washington, d.c. the australian government says this is possibly from flight 370 but not 100% certain. correct? >> reporter: not at all, bob, that's why we heard overnight to really take this with caution. what they found, let's show you the images again, what they found were two objects on satellite, one about 15 feet long, the other almost 80 feet long in the far southern part of the indian ocean. let's show you how far it is. this was 4,300 miles from where that plane was last known to be. it takes four hours to fly there just from australia so this is a remote area, one australian

official interviewed said that it's the most isolated part of the earth. so, we've had four planes down there that we know of this morning, two from australia, one new zealand and one from the u.s. navy. they couldn't see anything. talking about visibility, they ha clouds, rain, and it's made it tough to see. the search will continue, they have got a ship, a merchant ship due down there today, one that arrived, another one, a larger navy vessel that will likely have better capability but won't arrive for two days. >> thank you, tracie. we understand that a norwegian vessel has arrived on the scene. that search has been called off not only because of the conditions but because it's dark out. a first flight to be leaving again tomorrow at 7 chock local time. >> thank you, bob. it's interesting because we learned that malaysian airline desire not implement a sim elcomputer upgrade that could

low 80s. we're going to peek. we'll talk about rain. first let's check your drive. here is mike inouye. >> we're looking here over my shoulder. 880 fast coliseum. that's a good volume of traffic. nothing unusual around high street. you see the bend and folks traveling up toward downtown, you slow approaching the bay bridge. metering lights are on. the bay looks pretty standard as far as the colors, but we're looking at southbound 880. we've had a shower drive developing. earlier crash, those were off of the freeway. visible at one of the on ramps. we now see a gradual bill. slower than we expect and northbound approaching, about a tire in the middle of the freeway, there may be a traffic break. we'll keep that in mind. out of the tri-valley, over to

dublin slowing popped up out of the dub lib dwrad eastbound. the westbound slowing, all the way through castro valley. down toward sunol, that's the reason for the slowing there. the south bay continues to build. toward the bay bridge, the east shore freeway, the berkeley curve and the maze starting to jam up. in the city northbound 280 approaching 101 t crash in the center divide but enough distraction has the commute kicking in. 280 approaching 101. a look on the peninsula. the valley builds with these headlights. expect delays over the next 45 minutes. >> thank you. still ahead on "today in the bay" the back side of a big rig taken out. we'll tell you how the driver got stuck on the tracks and how he made it out safely.

it's 6:39. federal investigators trying to reconstruct the body of the news helicopter that crashed near the space needle in seattle killing two men. much of the chopper burned. the workers acknowledge they will have a hard time putting it back together. but a preliminary report could be done as early as the end of the week. the helicopter plummeted into an intersection and into three cars, shortly after takeoff on monday. the pilot and a photographer were killed a. man in one of the cars was badly burn withed. >> new video this morning of the moments that a freight train slammed into a trailer. happening overnight in cobb county, georgia. the pickup truck was able to make it across the tracks but the trailer got stuck. it was hit and dragged. the people in the truck were able to jump out in time. no one was hurt. the driver of the pickup was cited because trailers not allowed to cross that set of tracks. >> coming up, are the first

you peggy. while the australian government consider this is credible they are not 100% certain it is from malaysia flight 370. this is what a commercial satellite spotted four days ago. the two white ones. about 1400 miles southwest of perth, australia. one is about 75 to 80 feet across. i want to bring in kate smithers with channel 7 news in australia on the phone now around 9:45 in the evening local time. at the royal australian air force base after searching for these two objects but no luck so far. kate, good did evening to you. i'm curious, are searchers surprised that they haven't found these objects yet? >> that's right, bob. the australian maritime authority saying it could take days to find these if they find them at all. they had about with seven aircraft throughout searching

altogether, one of those is the u.s. navy poseidon. it has reported not saying anything as have the other aircraft. they are saying a cold front is moving in the area so they were flying low, one got about 100 feet above sea level but it was too cloudy and rain tee see much of what is out there. and as you mentioned it's about a 4-hour flight. they only have enough foul four about two hours. bipartisan quart tear 10 at night here. they finished for the night and will be leaving tomorrow morning again. >> these images from the satellite are about four days old. there are currents out there. how are they taking that into account? we saw video of looked like someone dropping buoys. >> we had a crew on board. the crew on that, they dropped these data buoys into the ocean

southwest of perth. they record temperature and they basically send the tide information back to australia where they track where it would be going if it is the aircraft at all. but as you said those images are four days old so it could be a few more days before we find out more. >> kate smithers, thank you very much from joining us from the royal australian air force base this not far from the search area. and of course, we're talking about time here, they lost a day today not finding it. it could be a few more days and we're talking about time because the estimate for the battery on the block batch of flight 370 if it is under water will only ping its location for perhaps another 19 days. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so interesting to see if this is connected to it. thanks so much.
