it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a thursday. >> a lot of people talking about the satellite images captured sunday four days ago. the fact it was the australian prime minister who told the world about the pictures is adding a lot of significance to it. >> first glimmer of hope. they show whitish objects just under the surface of the indian ocean. this area is about 1500 miles southwest of perth, australia. let's get right to nbc's tom costello. he's been following this day-by-day from the start. tom, good morning. >> hi, savannah, good morning. the malaysians say they believe these images in the ocean appear to be credible. one object 79 feet across, the other 16 feet across. the wingspan of a triple 7 is 200 feet. the tail is about 60 feet to give you some privilege. let's talk about where this particular location was found. about the bottom of this area where the plane would have exhausted its fuel three to four

hours from perth, australia, very close to the area of the zone the ntsb had said it would be wise to check that area about three to four hours outside of perth. a p ara aircraft has already searched that zone today. p3 did as well. they found nothing and more planes are scheduled to return to continue the search. the australian prime minister made the dramatic announcement in parliament. >> i would like to inform the house that new and credible information has come to light in relation to the search for malaysia airlines flight mh 370 in the southern indian ocean. >> images captured by satellite may be pieces of flight 370 missing since the early morning hours of march 8th when it disappeared from radar screens with 239 people on board. military radar suggested it made a you turn to the strait of m l

malacca to the indian ocean and mysterious pings suggests it may have thrown thousand of miles and as far as possible. john young. >> this is a lead, probably the best lead we have right now. we need to get there, find them, assess them to know whether it's meaningful or not. >> military search planes have been search to an area 1500 miles southwest of perth. the australian prime minister contacted his malaysian counter parts with the news. >> it's what i have been doing from day one following these leads. this time i just hope it is positive. development. >> every lead is a hope. we want to verify and corroborate. >> reporter: if the wreckage is found searchers want to find the black boxes. one of two men who found the air france black boxes in the

atlantic says it won't be easy. >> on paper it may seem fairly straightforward. when you get out there on board a ship the world becomes very large, that ocean does and a plane becomes very small. when you're actually in the thick of it you can see how easy it can be to miss something. >> reporter: time is slipping away. they've got only 17 days until the batteries on those underwater locating pingers run out. if the plane is in this area, it could be anywhere 10 to 16,000 feet of water, very deep. an australian naval ship is en route to the area but not expected until sunday. an a krrc-130 hercules dropping marker buoys in that area and nearby cargo ship is helping look for debris in this area. we're talking very rough conditions, 9 foot seas, 25 knot winds, poor visibility. that means if this is the wreckage from the plane, it might have already floated hundreds of miles in the ocean.

who knows the condition of the wreckage. guys, back to you. >> tom costello, thanks very much. tom casey is a former pilot for american airlines and flew the triple 7. greg is a former investigator with the ntsb. good morning to both of you. greg, let me start with you. it's the australian prime minister that makes this announcement. that is significant and he won't get in front of the camera unless he thinks there's credibility. the second thing that raisthe sr attention is this piece of debris or wreckage or object was found in one of those arcs mentioned by the ntsb as a possible location where this plane could be found. what's your gut reaction? >> cautious optimism. it gives us hope that we've finally found at least some traces of the airplane. again, with the coordinates and the fact they narrowed that search zone down in the southern part near australia. it was one of those things that

was to be expected, and that with the wreckage being so close it could be this airplane where it ran out of fuel because that's why the search zone was narrowed finally came to fruition that we may, for the first time, have some credible evidence that we haven't really seen in about the last 10 days. >> we're talking about a lot of hypotheticals here, greg. if in fact they can identify that object as a piece of debris from flight 370 they have to start to do math and calculate currents, don't they? >> absolutely. they have to look at not only the sea state but the direction and, of course, wind. those parts could have moved any direction and they probably moved not only hundreds of miles but thousands of miles over this 13 day period. >> thanks very much. tom, let me turn to you and talk about the size of these objects again. i will stand up for a second and go to the corner of the studio here. we're talking about an object about the length of from this side of the studio to the other corner over there.

what's your gut reaction? >> well, it's something, isn't it? it's an image taken from a satellite in seas using the best radio technology that's available. you're not going to find something with the naked eye out there. the focus of the investigation has obviously narrowed. that's important. and the area is -- it's in accordance with fuel exhaustion if they were on a direct heading from their last known position. >> if they can get a ship out there, if they can get a plane to fly directly over one of these objects and get a close-up picture of it, they will know instantly. >> they will. let's put it in privilege. they're flying a distance roughly equal from new york to denver. and then they're doing their search and then they have to go back that distance again. >> you look at this map here, we know the plane took off from kuala lumpur and went up about and hour and made a left turn and then there were these two arcs where we might find it. based on this location where

this object is found, what does it tell you about the flight of 370? did it run out of fuel or was it ditched intentionally? >> the main thing for me as an aviator, there was no mayday call. there's always time for a mayday call. there was either an intervention or the crew went rogue. where this satellite has found this debris, it's in accordance with fuel exhaustion graph. it's likely. >> you think this is a situation where someone took over that plane and it simply ran out of fuel? >> i think the people who are closest to the investigation think it is. >> tom casey. tom, thank you very much. and greg, as we mentioned, thank you as well. clouds and rain are limiting the visibility of those search planes, al, what are the crews dealing with? >> good news is we will see improvement in conditions. we're in the southern hemisphere. generally in our hemisphere, winds around high pressure in a clockwise direction, however, we have areas of high pressure both

here and here and those areas of high pressure the counter-clockwise flow of air around the wreckage. you can see high pressure building around the wreckage site over the next 24 hours. that's good news. winds will start to die down. right now, we think there is fog an also haze there. let's look at the satellite imagery and show you exactly what they're dealing with. a front did move through. good news is that has cleared out. you can see light haze now, maybe fog even associated with this. as that high pressure moves in, we will start to see clearing. that will mean better conditions, lower seas and that should really help the search going on. >> and they need all the help they can get. al, thank you so much. this potential discovery is a hopeful sign the families of the passengers could at least be closer to finally finding out what happened to their loved one. keir simmons is following this

story from kuala lumpur this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm told some relatives were given the news around 4:00 or 5:00 this morning. that is well over 12 hours ago. here's the painful thing, savannah. some relatives are crossing their fingers this is not the wreckage of flight 370. others say they hope it is a sign of flight 370. they simply want to know what happened. imagine at this tense time being a relative wanting news but not wanting it to be bad news. 8-year-old isha's older brother was on flight 370. she plays while the world waits for news. a hug for her father bracing himself to be told his son's plane did crash into the ocean. >> i'm not sure these objects are 370. >> reporter: his son is in his late 20s with a wife and child. his uncle says the family are prepared.

>> we can accept everything. >> reporter: even the words? >> yes. because this belongs to god. >> reporter: and in preparation for news from the search and rescue teams, ambulances have been stationed outside the relatives' homes in case some cannot cope. >> for how to, we are on standby. >> reporter: you're on standby. >> yeah. >> reporter: on standby in case the worst possible news? >> yes. >> reporter: counselors will help for now. they say relatives are hanging on every word, every new fact. and half hoping, half dreading what they might learn. i'm also told some relatives are being asked what they want to travel to australia, perhaps a measure how seriously officials are taking it. these relatives who have waited so long for news, now they have to wait again to see whether this is the plane their relatives were on.

>> keir simmons in kuala lum cur. we want to bring in sara. her companion was on flight 370 and she's been in beijing waiting for any word. sarah, good morning. it's good to see you. >> good evening, savannah. >> i can only imagine the range of emotions you must be feeling at this moment. can you even put into words how you felt when you heard this news of potential debris in the indian ocean? >> i heard it must have been about 3:00 this afternoon, a friend called me with the information. i don't think i've stopped shaking since. we just finally settled into a normal routine of waiting, unhappy waiting, but at least, you know, we were going back to normal sleeping cycles and getting in and i've continued to teach at work. now, this just throws it a all -- you know, all up in the air again. >> have you heard anything from authorities, from airline

authorities, from chinese officials about what may have been found off the coast of australia? >> a couple hours after i heard from my friends and saw it on the news, i did get a call from malaysian airlines, giving me an update. but the update contains just a small fraction of the information i had already seen on the press release that they had given out of australia. >> we saw the frustration so vividly, as some of the families who are dealing with what you are dealing with right now, this uncertainty. have you felt that frustration? do you feel you're getting the information you want and need from the authorities there? >> i've had frustration, but honestly, my frustration is not with the authorities giving me information because i understand they can only give information that they have, right? so if they haven't verified it, they shouldn't be giving to it me.

but my frustration is really with the process. you know, my heart just totally goes out to a lot of these families, because, you know, i have a strong support network around me. i have exposure to what these things all mean and i get ample access to good information. i'm in high stress. so these poor people, especially the ones here in china who basically hear nothing because the news is also filtered for them and they're all crammed together in this hotel -- >> i think we just lost sarah, who is a long time companion of phillip wood. does that not put a fine point on the human story here after all the most important thing, all those souls on board who are lost and so many people waiting for word. >> interesting to hear her say she doesn't fault the people for having information. you can only give information you have. there's no question it's a painful waiting time. meantime, natalie is here with a look at some other stories making headlines, including tough new talk about the crisis in ukraine.

say low. only for a while wednesday. fed chair janet yellin said interest rates could remain low for a considerable time and then suggested six months and said it depends where the labor market is. some analysts think rates may start going up before the summer of 2015. five people are in custody in houston after police made a disturbing find finding more than 100 people held in squalid conditions in what appeared to be a human smuggling operation. officials went to the home after a woman reported her children missing. a man's truck got stuck wednesday on railroad tracks. he and his passengers were able to get out in time, right before a freight train slammed into the trailer dragging it a quarter mile down the tracks. no one was hurt. the driver was cited for failure to obey a railroad crossing. march madness came early for an elderly bowler in

cultural exchanges between the u.s. and china. the first lady says this is not a political trip. and the ncaa tournament gets underhigh gear today with the tip-off with the round of 64. will it had the have the impact and getting work done? >> our breaking news tied to the search for flight 370. blake johnson joins us from perth, the closest city to this new search area but still some 1,200 miles away. blake, good morning, what can you tell us about this search? >> hi there, guys. well, it's a big search. 1500 miles off the coast of western australia. we've got six planes in the air searching that area, nonstop, four of them australian planes one from new zealand and the u.s. navy has sent the "poseidon" jet. there is also an australian navy ship on its way to the search

area. given the sheer distance, it's going to be a couple of days at least until it gets there. until we get a visual on the debris, we won't know what it is. we just don't know what it is exactly. >> blake johnson in perth, australia, good to get your report. thank you very much. if and when pieces of that wreckage are found, a team of experts from massachusetts may attend. it helped to find flight 447 in 2009 off the coast of brazil, that plane came to rest about 13,000 feet beneath the surface. and that's just about the depth of the indian ocean where this search is taking place. here's nbc's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: air france 447 plunged into the atlantic where

the water is miles deep and the terrain more rugged than anything on land. floating wreckage was found within days but the search for the fuselage and flight recorders lasted two years. >> it was akin to looking in the rocky mountains for a couple of shoe boxes at midnight with a flashlight. >> reporter: friends at the cape cod massachusetts for help. scientists have a secret weapon, the remis 6,000. so this is like an under water drone? >> exactly. >> reporter: a robot submarine that relies on sonar pulses to map the ocean floor, covering 25 square miles in a single day. how do you figure out what's a rock and what's a piece of fuselage and what's a fish? how does that work? >> well, that's right. it will show fish. it's a grouping, if we see a lot of strong signals from one location, then you'd get an indication there was a laud of

man-made objects there. >> reporter: in may 2011 this was the image that the sub captured. a very telling blur. it went back and took high definition photos. mark dannon looked at them first. >> the first thing i remember was back pack on the bottom. >> reporter: you found a backpack? a bittersweet moment. >> yes, we did find it, we're going to come to a conclusion here. >> but it's still a tragedy? >> that's right. >> the scientists at woods hole are hoping the phone will ring. ready to find flight 370. >> it's small, compact, packs a punch. >> reporter: finding flight 447 was a triumph not just of technology but of determination. the team at woods hole is ready do it again. instead of gain stephanie gosk, nbc news, woods hole, massachusetts. >> when you think about the magnitude of the search area, it's amazing they find anything. >> and the clock is ticking because they have to find those pings from that black box. let's get a check of the weather now from mr. roker. >> all right. we've been kind of hinting that

we might see something early next week. this is what we're looking at the models and kind of come into agreement. we are basically going to be looking at this high pressure building in, that's going to bring in the colder air. storm system coming up along the gulf. monday into tuesday. sets up on the gulf coast around tuesday afternoon. by wednesday morning this thing is off the coast. now, depending on the path of this, we already know we've got cold air coming in and that's going to be entrenched over our area. then you've got this counterclockwise flow of moisture coming in off the moisture. then you see from new england down to washington the possibility of some snow. again, this system move to the east, we don't get anything. moves farther to the west, everybody's going to get hammered by this but we are just giving the possibility. hopefully, nothing happens, it moves away. today new england across the northern plains, snow and mix of gorgeous weather.

67 in l.a. 80 in brownsville, and fog in northern florida. look for 76 in tampa. 7:36 now. what a spectacular start to the day. a little low cloud cover. i want to show you that in san francisco. this is going to bring about a little bit more of an onshore flow. you can see it's occurring right now as we see that ridge of high pressure break down. today a touch cooler by this evening. because we're starting out mild in the 50s easily hitting the upper 70s in the south bay, the peninsula at 78, 79 degrees, comfortable in the tri-valley and the numbers are going to drop off for the weekend. >> that's your latest weather. >> thank you, al. new developments in the potential new lead in the near 7-year-old disappearance of madeline mcccann. >> good morning to you. >> after seven years of

searching dead-end leads, scotland yard is making a new plea to the public, this time for another monday who is said to have targeted british tourist and their young girls in portugal. >> reporter: police say they hope to find a man accused of breaking into vacation homes of british tourists in portugal and sexual live assaulting five young girls between 2004 and 2010. >> what about a description of this guy? >> we know he's spoken english to the children here, had a foreign accent. >> reporter: they also place him in the resort town where 3-year-old madeline mccann disappeared from her bed without a trace in 2007. >> what we can see here is a man who has a very, very unheal interest in young, white female children who he's attacking whilst they're in their beds on vacation. >> reporter: portuguese police tell nbc news that this information is not new. it was made available to scotland yard years ago.

british police contend only some of the cases are handed over and the portuguese police didn't see a connection to mccann because there wasn't an abduction. >> this is a crime that's captured the public imagination. >> one of those families tells us about a crime which we feels is the first in this series. is this a crime that captured the public imagination. it's very unusual for scotland yard, british police, to come in and investigate an abduction and possible killing abroad and trying to find out what the portuguese police have been unable to find out. he was wearing a distinctive top on those cases. >> reporter: another potential suspect for investigators and another glimmer of hope for her parents that madeleine might one day come home. >> they firmly believe she's still alive and still out there to be found, as do the british police. >> reporter: again, scotland yard does not know the identity of this man. they do seem to have quite a detail description, a pot belly,

hi, tom. >> reporter: these images were taken four days ago, the largest piece is here. 79 feet across, the other 15 feet. the tail is about 60 feet. this area is so remote, right down there off of the coast of australia in a rather remote area. in fact, we're talking about 1,500 miles from perth, australia. this is an nbc news special report. here's savannah guthrie. good morning, president obama is about to deliver a statement on the crisis in ukraine in just a moment. this situation growing more tense this morning between the u.s. and its allies and russia over russia's annexation of the re region of crimea. a short time ago the european union said it will expand sanctions against russia. the president will be speaking from the south lawn of the white

house this morning. his about to depart for a trip to south florida. we want to get right to nbc's chief white house correspondent, chuck todd. chuck, good morning. what are we expecting to hear from the president this morning? >> reporter: we're expecting an announcement of expanded sanctions against russian individuals. something that the white house has been hinting at for the last couple of days but one of the things the white house has not wanted to do is act unilaterally, so the reason for sort of a couple of days delay obviously the crimea referendum went through. the annexation process, the russian government has been doing it, so there was an expectation there would be a u.s. response but the white house has been waiting to get ahold of the european allies on the same page. you mentioned what the european union announced, so this is a collective expansion of the sanctions. and, again, targeted at individuals for now. it is important to note for that yesterday for the first time the president in a very declarative way said there is no military option in response to a potential question about the idea that russia may continue to

march through ukraine, perhaps eastern ukraine, and the president took that completely off the table and essentially emphasized that this was going to be -- the focus would be on sanctions and diplomacy so expect to be hearing that in a few minutes from the south lawn, savannah. >> and just about three days ago, i suppose, chuck, we heard the president talking about sanctions against certain russian officials what white house folks called cronies. is that the type of sanction you expect to hear, or do you think there will be something even more biting perhaps? >> reporter: well, we expect perhaps an expansion of that, but, again, our understanding that it would be individuals. we'll see if they do more. there's been lots of calls about, you know, potentially having -- announcing maneuvers, nato, a little nato saber rattling, things like that. but i don't expect that. it does feel as if they want to just continue to expand the number of individuals that are targeted in putin's inner circle. >> well, chuck, the president is walking out right now, south lawn of the white house just moments before he is to depart on a fund-raising and policy

trip to florida, but we do expect him to address this ongoing crisis in the ukraine and as you mentioned we do expect him to talk about further sanctions against russia in light of the -- >> good morning, everybody. i wanted to provide an update on the situation in ukraine and the steps that the united states is taking in response. over the last several days we've continued to be deeply concerned by events in ukraine. we've seen an illegal referendum in crimea, an illegitimate move by the russians to annex crimea, and dangerous risks of escalation including threats to ukrainian personnel in crimea and threats to southern and eastern ukraine as well. these are all choices that the russian government has made, choices that have been rejected by the international community as well as the government of ukraine. and because of these choices, the united states is today moving, as we said we would, to

impose additional costs on russia. based on the executive order that i signed in response to russia's initial intervention in ukraine, we're imposing sanctions on more senior officials of the russian government. in addition, we are today sanctioning a number of other individuals with substantial influences and resources that provide material support to the russian leadership as well as a bank that provides material support to these individuals. now, we're taking these steps as part of our response to what russia has already done in crimea. at the same time, the world is watching with grave concern as russia has positioned its military in a way that could lead to further inkurcursions i southern and eastern ukraine. for this reason we've been working closely with our european partners to develop more severe anxioctions that co be taken if russia continues to escalate the situation.

as part of that process, i signed a new executive order today that gives us the authority to impose sanctions not just on individuals but on key sectors of the russian economy. this is not our preferred outcome. these sanctions would not only have a significant impact on the russian economy, but could also be disruptive to the global economy. however, russia must know that further escalation will only isolate it further from the international community. the basic principles that govern relations between nations in europe and around the world must be upheld in the 21 century. the motion that regions do not simply redraw borders or make decisions at the expense of their neighbors simply because they are larger or more powerful. one of our other top priorities continues to be providing assistance to the government of ukraine so it can stabilize its

economy and meet the basic needs of the ukrainian people. as i travel to europe next week to meet with the g7 and other european and asian allies, i once again urge congress to pass legislation that is necessary to provide this se astance and do it right away. expressions of support are not enough. we need action. i also hope that the imf moves swiftly to provide a significant package of support for ukrainians as they pursue reforms. in europe i'll also be reinforcing a message that vice president biden carried to poland to the baltic states this week. america's support for our nato allies is unwavering. we're bound together by our produce found article 5 commitment to defend one another and by a set of shared values that so many generations sacrificed for. we've already increased our support for our eastern european allies and we will continue to strengthen nato's collective defense, and we will step up our

cooperation with europe on economic and energy issues as well. now, let me close by making a final point. diplomacy between the united states and russia continues. we've emphasized that russia still has a different path available, one that deescalates the situation and one that involves russia pursuing a diplomatic solution with the government in kiev, with the support of the international community. the russian people need to know, and mr. putin needs to understand, that the ukrainians shouldn't have to choose between the west and russia. we want the ukrainian people to determine their own destiny and to have good relations with the united states, with russia, with europe. with anyone that they choose. that can only happen if russia also recognize the rights of all the ukrainian people to determine their future as free individuals and as a sovereign

christina loren. >> we're about an hour away from the official kick off of spring. south bay today feeling warmer than average for this time of year by about ten degrees. upper 70s here. comfortable day in the north bay. 77 degrees. 72 in the east bay, and 79 in the tri-valley.

out today. these were actually taken four days ago, but the australian prime minister made the announcement earlier that debris possibly there seen in the southern indian ocean, about 1,150 miles southwest north of perth, australia, might be debris from the plane, malaysia airline flight 370. the australian air force had a flight searching in that area for about nine hours and came back with nothing, radar came back empty, not really finding anything there. also you've been talking a lot about the conditions there and the winds that they're having to deal with. >> it was windy. the good news is the conditions will improve. it's nighttime there now. look at our wind flow chart. and interestingly enough, in the northern hemisphere, winds flow around in a clockwise direction

and a high. in the summer hemisphere, it's counterclockwise. as you put this into motion, you can see the area of possible wreckage, high pressure is going to be building on top of that late tonight into friday, into friday morning so winds will die down and we'll start to see some clearing. in fact, on the satellite imagery, a weak front moved through and you can see there is a little haze there or possibly fog, maybe a little foggy drizzle in this but conditions will improve, sky conditions will improve. >> keir simmons, our colleague, is saying grief counselors are at the homes, which has been a major complaint, they felt they were in a vacuum and not getting information and updated properly. and also some family members hope this is the crash site so they can have closure, while others certainly see this as final. and so that hope that we referred to and that many of them are holding on to

understandably will be gone. so there's a conflict there but finally they are providing grief counseling on the spot for those families. that has been heart breaking. one mom carried out of a press conference, unimaginable. >> just heart breaking to see that. if you look again and go back to the pictures of the debris, they're saying the largest piece is about 79 feet wide, the other piece about 16 feet across. so that's a large chunk of whatever it is but again you have to say whatever it is because it's a shipping area as well. could be a cargo bin. >> and it's floated hundreds of miles away. >> you have ocean currents, wind -- >> nine foot swells pushing it around. >> it's going to be very difficult. >> on a lighter note, president obama set to be a guest on ellen today. we got a little sneak peek, talking about family life at the white house. >> mr. president, michelle said she's out of town and she wanted

doctor, are you the type who spends hours looking for one with a lot of experience and degrees or do you rely on your friends and families for recommendations? >> i'm the latter. a survey found your personality may play a key role in your search for a physician. with more on that, dr. peterson. good morning. >> good morning. >> as a doctor yourself, you know people shot around. what do you find they're looking for? >> i find a lot of people still rely on online reviews. in this survey, 56 people of people rely on online reviews. about 70% found that the doctor-patient relationship was more important to them than the academic credentials. if you have a good rapport with your doctor, you're more likely to follow their health recommendations. >> let's go to the different types, let's start with an uber.

>> the uber is someone who spends a lot of time looking online, they interview the physicians and rely much more on the academic credentials than they do on the interpersonal relationship. it's much more of a business relationship and a lot less love in there. they're also very thorough and organized. they'll come to the doctor with a list of what they want done and they look at their physician as an employee. >> then there are the outsourcers, those who tend to follow doctors orders without asking questions. >> outsourcers really rely on the physician's expertise, listen to instructions very very well and avoid going online and they're happy with their physicians and they stick out with them a lot longer. >> they're the loyalists.

>> and then they're the nurturers who rely on friends and family for recommendations. >> they work very collaboratively with their physicians and they tend to be very good listeners as well. >> so which one gets you the best health care? >> i would say most patients have a little bit of each type of personality within them. in my practice i would say the outsourcers are the ones that follow the instructions best and the ubers are the ones that will challenge me the most but i like both of those because there's a balance there. >> and a lot of times people end up leaving their doctors. why do they tend to leave? >> some people do. 40% of the time they leave because the insurance changed. about 21% of the time it's because they disagreed with the diagnosis and 17% of the time was the doctor moved away. and there was a critical time period, if they moved more than
