6:04 am
neighborhood. christie smith just arrived gathering information. they had to call for backup. how big is this? >> reporter: good morning to you. i only had a second to hear from firefighters before i had to run here and talk to you. what they told me is that the good news is that they have this fire knocked down. when i walked over there where you see the lights and people moving around it's in the rear of the building there what they call a church office. when i walked over there was smoke but we couldn't see flames. they said it was moving really quickly. a lot of flames when they first arrived. that was their focus keep it from spreading. there were small homes so they didn't want to the spread. what they tell us now didn't get information on a cause yet, but that they do have it knocked down. the sign on the building out front did say church of god of san jose, that's not church but the building next to it is the
6:05 am
one that suffered the damage. what i'm going to do is check in with firefighters in a minute or two, and then come back with you for more information. what they tell us it appears they have it knocked down. that's the latest, reporting live in san jose, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. this week southern california quake rattling nerves in the south bay. we've known for a while the anderson dam in morgan hill is not seismically safe a. significant quake could knock it down sending billions of gallons of water into morgan hill and much of the valley. bob is live in morgan hill with why the push to fix the dam is in high gear. >> good morning. because the people who monitor, who maintain the anderson dam have been told they have to get it fixed. the state and fed have both asked the santa clara valley water district to fix the anderson dam, to have it retrofitted by the year 2018 which means that work could
6:06 am
begin on this project very soon. in the next 12 months. the problem is that this earthen structure comprised of clay and rock, it's old, it's seismically unsafe. the belief is that a 6.6 quake on the nearby fault could cause it to burst and send a wall of water that would flood morgan hill, gilroy and san jose. it's unlikely, experts say it's slim but there is that possibility. hence the need for this getting fixed. it would cost roughly $123 million. here's the hitch to this. in order for them to fix the dam that means that the reservoir would have to be drained. and of course the timing is not good considering we're in the middle of this drought. >> we're asked to conserve but water is disappearing. >> the timing is difficult. we're obviously in a drought right now. we don't have to make that
6:07 am
decision today. >> reporter: again, the deadline for the dam to be repaired is 2018 so the district has leeway. it's possible that the district could ask for a delay from the state and feds if this drought were to get worse f. they do go ahead with their plan for draining would not take place until fall of next year. whatever water is drained would be diverted. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> happening now, crews still on guard watching for flare-ups following this brush fire that burned 40 acres in pittsburg. this burned close to a power plant on west tenth street. the plant was not active when the fire started. it began yesterday afternoon but was not contained until 7:00. lots of people walk and drive through the area so investigators hope that someone saw something and they are

6:45 am
threat to the neighboring homes, there are trees in front of this building here so certainly they didn't want those to go up. they made a quick attack and now firefighters have this knocked down and under control. what they tell us is that this is actually converted house or office to the church of god of san jose, that's actually not the church itself that caught fire. this started bat 5:27 this morning with a neighbor reporting smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building. san jose fire arrived at minnesota and curtis avenue and quickly called for a second alarm. >> initially wew the threat to the neighborhood we need those resources here if we need to use them. one of the rules of the business is if you call it too late it's not going to do you any good. so, we had a whole full first alarm working, we had no units available to deploy so that's an automatic upgrade. >> reporter: no one was injured in all this, but the building
6:46 am
badly damaged. they don't know yet how it started but one firefighter told me it got their radar up, their attention that this is a church office, they pay close attention to any fire at assembly halls, churches or schools. they say at this point there is nothing to suggest that this is suspicious but they do have investigators on the way. they will be here for at least another hour doing overhaul. i heard briefly from the pastor's wife and she said that church services will continue as normal on sunday. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> wondering about that. >> checking in now, a look at the weekend forecast, also church sunday you want to know how that's going to shape up. >> wear a bon snet. >> fine. don't have to worry about getting rained on except maybe the coast. we also have some low clouds spilling in. there is a view around the bay area. a tour from north to south, as you look at our temperatures,

6:48 am
in today's forecast. lake county may be late today a stray shower popping up as instability heating of the day. otherwise high clouds inland and low clouds staying on the coast all day long. it does look to be a chilly weekend if you're going to head to the beaches from half moon bay to santa cruz. dry for the most part from now through about with let's say next monday. by tuesday and wednesday we'll see the jet stream drop south. you see much needed chances of rain there middle part of next week, then another one for saturday. so that is the roller coaster ride in the seven-day forecast. starting tuesday. there come the chances of seeing showers. but not a lot of rain. most of this will fall midnight, tuesday night into wednesday morning. and then we're only looking at a third of an inch for the north bay and less than a quarter for south of san francisco as the system comes in middle part of next week. today high clouds at times, 70s around san jose. upper 60s around the peninsula. low 60s for san francisco. low 70s into the north bay once
