5:00 am
a live report. plus, after two days on hold, crews are back out looking for the missing malaysia airlines flight. they now say they have spotted another field of debris. we'll have the latest on that search. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm peggy bunker. we'll get to those stories in a moment, but first, live look at weather radar. a second storm is on its way here. we have team coverage about this rain and how it will be affecting you today. also, mike inouye keeping an eye on the roads. bob redell in foster city, where the rain is expected to fall soon. let's start off with meteorologist christina loren. all of the green is good news for us. >> rain is a good thing. good morning. 5:00 straight up. it is looking fantastic. we've picked up decent downpours yesterday. we had convective activity. thunderstorm activity in atmosphere. brought about good rainfall in campbell. heavy downpours now the north bay's where we're seeing activity. not a lot going on south of 92
5:01 am
yet. why we strategically positioned our own bob redell on the foster city side of the san mateo bridge. and, bob, i know it's not coming down yet. but you mark my words, good sir, it will be over the course of the next hour. feeling any wind or anything out there this morning? >> reporter: can't wait. good morning to you. slight breeze, we've seen spittaling but nothing of concern. it's coming down in the north bay. we got new video from san francisco where you can see it's been coming down a little bit, wet roads, something to keep in mind heading into work. expected here at the san mateo bridge and the rest of the area by 6:00. christina loren and her counterpart in the weather department, they predicted it will come down for a good half hour, at least. this is between 6:00 and 6:30, let up for a bit, turn it back on between 10:00 and 11:00 pop possible at main part of commute could be spared. the rain is much needed given the fact the state's in a
5:02 am
drought. san francisco which received rain yesterday and receiving it now, has received 42% of its average rainfall since last summer, just using that as an example. if there is one upside not having much rain, landslides aren't as big a concern. certain hillsides in the area like those along the coastline and pacifica are vulnerable, but unlikely to have any more erosion, anything significant, because we haven't received that much rain. >> even if we were to get big rains now, the ground is so dry, it's so strong, because it's dry, it's not likely to have any landslides. >> reporter: in other words, it's not going to be like 2011 when heavy rain triggered what you're looking at now, large mudslide in san pablo that took out several backyards. live here in foster city right in front of the san mateo bridge, where we're expecting reason to come down significantly within the next hour or so. something to keep in mind, if that's around the time you'd be
5:03 am
heading into work. maybe give yourself extra time, because you know how people are when it starts raining again. >> what are you suggesting, bob? people forget how to drive when it rains? we hear that a lot on i don't promote that, but take extra caution especially taking those little ones to school. you can see most of the activity over the tri-valley, concord getting heavy downpours. san ramon getting rain here in the next 1520 minutes. more offshore. throughout the morning hours, tracking showers especially the south of 92 where a lot of ewers live. right now, as you know, when it rains, it could slow. mike inouye. >> that's right. we'll warn you anyway, plan for the slower drive. we're looking at bay bridge where it's not a wet road but damp road. you can see the toll plaza because there's not a lot of traffic, just as the commute starting to kick in. no puddling yet. look at the maps. traffic and weather systems are
5:04 am
tied together. right here that highlighted green area, most of the east shore freeway and the maze, that's where they're registering wet roads, the damp roadways at bay bridge toll plaza. slow it down as well on the approach to the bay bridge or the golden gate through the north bay. more widespread slowing as it's expected in the next few. 5:04. we'll be watching radar and the roads all morning long for you. mike and christina back with updates in less than five minutes. breaking news to tell you about in san francisco. a hit-and-run overnight, seven people hurt after an alleged hit and run driver slammed into a van. police are still searching for that driver and two other passengers. the collision happened around 1:00 at the intersection of geary and van ness. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live with an update on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. van ness is back open at geary, after shut down for quite some time after a collision that
5:05 am
witnesses say they really couldn't believe what they were seeing. this morning, what's left of that is a traffic signal laying in the center median there. what witnesses saw is one car roll over, they say, and a second car with injured people, they got out and actually ran from the scene. this happened around 1:00 this morning at van ness near geary and shut down the busy streets for quite some time while investigators and paramedics arrived. witnesses say a smaller car hit a van or suv and the car rolled over several times, the larger one. it was described as flying in the air. inside the witness says that he saw two women and a man get out, they didn't stick around at all, they actually just started running away. >> so that's what i saw, the girl has blood on her face, and basically she's -- she was really panicked. some girls -- the girl standing here, they just say, oh, they
5:06 am
might stole the car. so once they hit the car, all of the people in the car just ran away. >> reporter: that witness says that he saw police chasing the people who ran from the scene. so there are a lot of questions this morning over who was rounded up and who wasn't. in all, seven people injured, some taken to the hospital. it's believed that their injuries are nonlife threatening but serious enough to need treatment. we have calls into san francisco police to clear up questions. as soon as we hear from them, we'll let you know what they had to say. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> quite the impact. update to a developing story as officials in washington state say the list of people missing, after saturday's mudslide, is now shrinking, as expected, as people from nearby towns that lost power call in. however, another day did pass with searchers only finding bodies and no survivors. two more bodied pulled from the mud, bringing the total number
