overnight. driving could be difficult with showers on the radar. quite a bit of activity along the peninsula. all of this headed toward two major highways, 280, 101, tracking that. and that rain is coming in as we're starting to effects of the morning commute, kicking in around the bias well. follow the slowdowns and a warning what to watch, coming up. a live look san mateo bridge for you this morning on this wednesday, march 26th. this is "today in the bay." very good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm peggy bunker. time to check in on the forecast as we get wednesday rolling with rain. a live look outside, san jose, san francisco, fremont. rain returned on time for the commute. taking alook at radar, started in the north bay, it's making the rainfall making its way

south. a team in place, watching the weather. mike inouye, bob redell, checking out conditions on the road. let's begin with meteorologist christina loren, live in the weather center. >> good morning to you, laura, peggy. it's one of those mornings make sure you have an extra cup of coffee or make sure you're extra alert when you head out the door. a lot of shower activity into the bay area now. and a lot more on the way. i can tell you, it's going to slam into the peninsula as we head throughout the morning hours. as we head throughout the next couple of days, though, we're going to keep this rain in the forecast. i can tell you right now, at this point, even with pretty decent downpours, we're not tapping into that atmospheric river yet. that comes into the mix as we head into this weekend. ground's going to be saturated. we have potential for localized flooding through the next couple of days in a drought. i know, that's just the case. seven day, showers working their way, especially along the peninsula at that point.

widespread rainfall. 10:00 a.m., that will continue until 1:00 p.m. things will improve, lighten up a touch. but, hey, we're going to see impressive snowfall totals out of this. we'll take you live to tahoe, coming up. check your drive, mike inouye. >> here to the effects of the rain as well. because if it hits the road, affects your drive. north bay, rain's hitting for a while now. this is southbound 101 with the glowing lights. water kick up behind the cars. it's damp, wet in many spots, especially stan rosa, napa, highway 101, 37 out of vallejo. br bay bridge, traffic backs up. watch the connecter ramps. a quick, quick early morning wind advisory registered but chp called that off. farther south, by the san mateo bridge, checking in with our on bay area bob redell, you're over there off 92. i see that in the background. what's going on?

>> reporter: we had a band come through here 20, 25 minutes ago. good morning to you, mike. take a look at video. clfr it as a heavy drizzle, as you would say. lasted for about five minutes. according to radar, that band is heading south. it's in the redwood city area, perhaps, now already into mountain view. enough to just leave a sheen, a gloss look on the roadways, not enough to cause a hazard for the commute. but that could change a couple hours from now. i was on the phone with the weather department and they're saying between 8:00 and 11:00. it's a revision, between 8:00 and 11:00 we could see rain coming in. instead of it heading from the north to the south, it's moving from the ocean, pacific east inland. that's where you're going to have a higher concentration of the bay getting dumped on at once as opposed to it just coming from a northerly so southerly direction. back out here, live, looking at the eastbound direction over my shoulder, highway 92, going up

the incline on the san mateo bridge. you will notice that the sign normally lit with a high wind advisory is now dark, which is a good thing. winds are calm. as far as having to deal with anything driving across the bridge, winds and whatnot, that's not an issue. only thing that's going to an issue is when that rain starts to coming down during the commute. plan ahead. people will be driving slower and you're going to have to add extra time to make sure you get to work on time. >> bob, keep glasses dry out there. thank you. out to the bay bridge. another crossing for the bay. moving smoothly. showed you the toll plaza. but our camera from emeryville pointed at span, wind is moving it around. there was earlier wind advisory but that's taken away about chp. the sign across the san mateo bridge is not light up today. be careful as the rain comes in. you see the glow, mist in the

air. we'll tell the rest of the story. across the bay, fine. either side oakland or right san francisco side. you see the green highlighting there, that's where our road weather index and weather data that we have tieing it together, yeah, damp conditions. watch connecters, slippery and slick. entire north bay hit, highway 101 interstate 80, 680, coming off out of the area across thei bridge. focusing on areas with a spinout along march view. puddling and pondle we hear about spinouts. just getting kicked in for the bay. crossing the bay, smooth drive across the san mateo bridge, highway 92. peninsula showing highlighted with green and that's because the rain or the mist and drizzle coming in making damp roadway conditions. watch speeds. be careful, drive defensively here. south bay, for the most part,

"today in the bay's" christie smith live by the crash scene with an update on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, busy van ness is back open. six lanes shut down overnight because of the collision that witnesses say they couldn't believe. i did just get off the phone with san francisco police and

they say everyone involved in the collision has been accounted for, but the question now is trying to figure out exactly which of the people they are talking with is the driver. i wanted to show you what's left behind here, and that is a signal light on the ground. that's where one of the vehicles involved ended up. this happened around 1:00 in the morning at van ness and geary. it it basically shut the street down for hours while the investigation went on. and as paramedics arrived. witnesses say, a smaller car hit an suv and that suv rolled several times. described as flying through the air. inside that smaller car, the witness says that two women and a man got out, didn't stop, didn't stick around, but started to run away from the scene. >> so that's when i saw the girl had blood on her face and she was really panicked. and some girls, the girl standing here, they prob -- they

just say, they might stole the car. all of the people just ran away. >> reporter: the witness says that he saw police chasing the three that got out of the car and ran. apparently they did catch up with them. they are speaking with them, although all seven people were injured and taken to the hospital. that was more as a precaution, that all injuries are nonlife threatening. live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. new, authorities in malaysia say that a satellite has spotted 122 new objects in the indian ocean that could be from missing flight 370. take a look at satellite fogt to t photos here. they show objects of various shapes and sizes floating close to each other in the same area where other objects have been scene. in reality, they're quite large.

planes spot three objects where three other satellites previously detected possible debris. a dozen planes and five ships from several countries including the u.s. are hunting for the objects. they have not retrieve anything yet. malaysia's defense minister says the satellite images are the most credible lead they have. video released today showing the moment a helicopter rescue team pulled a 4-year-old boy, named jacob, from wreckage of a deadly mudslide that happened saturday. you see him in the rescuer's arms. the rescuers couldn't get to the boy by foot because the mud was too deep, some describe it as cement-like. his brother, two sisters and a half-brother still missing. >> they pulled two more bodies from the mud. that brings the total number of dead to 16. they're not yet counting eight additional bodies workers have found but have not been able to recover. officials say the list of people

missing is shrinking as survivors call in from a nearby town that lost power. more than 100 not accounted for. family members teaming up with crews to find them. >> i'm going to search for my sister. we've come to the realization this has transitioned into recovery for my sister versus rescue. but regardless, we want to bring her home. my mom wants to hold her one last time and i'm going to make sure that happens. >> the washington governor declared state of emergency that could bring long-term federal money beyond what president obama has ordered. >> 6:10. still ahead on "today in the bay," wrong turn, not a big deal unless of course that happens in space. coming up, why three astronauts, including one american, getting to the international space station later than expected. plus, boats at sea, tossed and turned as bliz-like conditions slam the east coast.

lots of rain headed our way. we'll talk about it in your full forecast. >> we talked to bob redell. look, the east bay side of the san mateo bridge, a couple of drops on the lens. i see wet roadways as well. what our sensors read, what you're go to experience, coming up. taking a look at today's top stories. in san francisco, intersection of geary and van ness back open after an apparent hit-and-run crash overnight. police are trying to piece together the events but witnesses say an suv rolled several times, three people inside got out and ran. several people hurt in the crash. searchers will continue to comb through the mud in hopes of finding anyone alive. searchers will. total of 16 people confirmed dead than number does not include eight additional bodies workers have found not able to recover. >> a satellite spotted about 122

snow continues to come down. driving up to lake tahoe from the bay area, this is what you can expect. rain down in the valley. you can expect slick roadways on interstate 80 as soon as you hit nyac you, will see snow flurries. you need to bring chains with you. again, you will see the slick roads and the white roads as well as soon as you hid king veil. take it slow. you will encounter the winds and cole temperatures. if you're about to head out the door, grab an extra layer. back to you. >> not heading out the door right now but people will be heading out to the sierra this weekend excited for the snow. best window of opportunity? >> i think if you're headed up there for the weekend, get out of here on friday because saturday is looking very, very heavy. which is great news because we want that fresh powder. you only get the fresh powder from the storm systems. we try our hardest to make that

fresh powder with the snow machines but, hey, not easy. we want to bring in brian hager. i was out at squaw friday, and before the next round of snow moves in, i mean, you have great conditions up there. it's all about the upper mountain, wouldn't you agree? >> yeah, the mountain is holding up nice. higher elevations, snow's freezing at night. making perfect spring skiing. excited for the storm to come to get fresh powder. >> i can tell you, on saturday, that's going to be the weather game changer, when we tap into that the atmospheric river and that could produce four feet of snow over the course of saturday into sunday. a lot of people are going to be headed up there. we shouldn't be giving up on that ski season yet. look at this. able to make that snow on top of it because temperatures are really cold overnight. you need low humidity and freezing temperatures to make that great snow.

so, in combination with mother nature, making it up there. as a result, choice conditions. looking good at the base up there. throughout the next couple of days, preview what we are expecting. just through friday before we hit that tap potentially on saturday. everything's looking like we will do so. bear valley, 22 inches between now and friday. so, it's all about the upper mountain. if you can get up, get up as high as you can. right now nice and dry in tahoe. a different story in the bay area. the bumming of the moisture is locate word bob redell is in foster city, light rainfall. take you into the city by the bay. san francisco, starting to get active. take it easy, travel cautiously. it's dark as well. so, if you get your kids ready for school, at the bus stop, it's going to be dark and damp. stay safe. bay area looking good for showers to continue through the morning. we stop the clock at 8:00 a.m. at that point, heavy bouts of

rain over the peninsula. still mostly dry in san jose but not for long. between 8:00 and s10:00 we get slammed. this is not including that atmospheric river. let me show you what comes into the mix through saturday. a lot of that green. take a look at what comes in on saturday 5:00 p.m. what's so great, we're getting heaviest rainfall in the central valley where our farmers need it desperately. this is a good sign. it's going to come in at once. make sure you're safe out there. keep you aware of what's coming our way. monday, keeping the atmospheric river go, even tuesday and wednesday. we could make up significant totals we've been lacking. hopefully all will pan out. we don't want a rough drive. mike's here to help us out. >> yeah, no rough drive. foiled because of this, talking about this. on our radar, it pushed through

palo alto, 101 now you see the roadway slick. i told you we're going to use the sign to see how much water's on the roadway. a few minutes ago it was kicking up. it calmed down here. road weather index and weather system, we have green where the rain traveled through, registering you'll have damp conditions. watch at on and off ramps. south bay, starting to get rain now. just through sunnyvale and santa clara, damper conditions. northbound 101 into the same area slows for san jose. slowing for 87 as more folks hit the road in to san jose as well. bay looks like this. rain having impact on the incognito because of the wetter roads. travels over the bay. dumbarton, where we have the slowdown for the commute. as they combine for the next half hour a dramatic slowing happen. the altamont, tri-valley, east

campbell, los gados, 17, heavy rainfall started up over the past ten minutes. you could see a slower than normal drive. we'll check on that if a moment. 880, steady rain along the east shore. a time when people hit the highway. you want to give yourself extra time and take it it easy out there. temperatures today are going to be cool. upper 50s, mid-60s, that's it. i can tell you it's going to be warm enough for isolated thunderstorms to pop up this afternoon as we get daytime heating. what we're expecting as far as rainfall totals go through friday. additional three inches in santa rosa. one to two inches in the tri-valley. and a half inch up to an inch more right here in san jose. expecting the heaviest rainfall for the next few days up in the north bay. everything changes as we head into the weekend. thursday, on and off showers. by friday, a break. high pressure's going to build in just for about 12 hours. look at what comes our way as we

head through saturday morning. take a look at this. we've got heavy rain, very unusual to see the deep red here on the futurecast. this is all a product of the atmospheric river, which is going to bring really heavy rain all the way across the bay area. as we head throughout your saturday. 4:00 p.m., you can see that just about everywhere, getting slammed. and then a little bit of a break sunday with more rain on the way as we head through monday. in fact, i can tell you now, all the a way across the board through wednesday, significant chances for rain. i'm going to tally what we are expecting over the course of friday, in addition to what's coming our way this weekend. when we get that atmospheric river, your mind might be blown. mike inouye and that drive. >> might blow your mind. looking here to oakland where we just might blow you down. northbound part the coliseum. now, that's the headlight side toward 98 and 66. glow to the lights. rain coming in patches for the

east bay. looking at that. the southbound side, taillight, i was looking for the stall reported by chp, but it has cleared from the roadway. there you go. look at the maps, you can see, bottom of the screen, by the clock, oakland into downtown, slowing because of conditions as well as volume of traffic. from richmond to the bay bridge, slower drive on right. north bay into the city, green heig highlighted, damp, slippery conditions. that hit over the peninsula in the last 15, 20 minutes. rain cleared to the east bay. east bay rain as well as south bay. wet roadways as rain continues to bill as well as commute at the same time. 85, 87, 101, san jose, right around 55 to 50 miles per hour. that's a lot of slowing that's happened over the last 15 year. rest of the commute to the tri-valley, nothing unpredictable. livermore, slowing as well as south 680 through pleasanton. rain not impacting this yet.

navy football player has died while in a coma. freshman linebacker will mckamey hospitalized since collapsing three days ago. the 19-year-old guy died eight baltimore hospital with his family at his side. he was carrying the ball but was not hit when he collapsed. he's had a previous head injury from 2012 that sent him to the hospital. it's unclear if that injury had any affect on the collapse. new video of the moment the commuter train jumped the tracks and plows ahead. two people jump out of the way, running for their lives. this happened monday at o'hare international airport station in chicago.

more than 30 people on board that train, they were hurt. an emergency brake system activated. there are reports that the operator may have fall an sleep at the control. have you seen this? incredible cell phone video, shows construction worker trapped on the fourth floor balcony of a burning building. he paced back and forth, decided to jump down to the third floor and fire crews rescued him just as the walls began falling there. such a timely rescue. amazing. the fire destroyed the luxury apartment complex under construction and the cause of that fire is under investigation. so quickly they had to get that done. >> incredible. the firefighter waving his arms saying get me closer, in the nick of time. 6:41. update to breaking news as seven people hurt, cars smashed as an out of control driver on the loose. new details about the major san francisco thoroughfare shut

time to check the forecast as we give you a live look at san jose and san francisco. rain has returned right in time for the morning commute. take a look at radar there is morning. rain started in the north bay, making its way south. >> we do have teams in place watching the weather this morning. mike inouye, of course, and bob redell watching conditions for you out on the roads. we want to begin with meteorologist christina loren who joins us in studio. no raindrops here, thank goodness. it's definitely falling outside. >> it is. which means if you parked outside, friday cash wash. this is a great time, this is a great time. as we head through the next seven to eight days we have rain in the forecast. turn your sprinklers off, let mother nature water that lawn for you and help us save some water as you know, we're trying to conserve whatever we can in the drought. what i can tell you, the next seven to eight day a weather game changer. we have that atmospheric river coming into the forecast and for us, that's potential to

accumulate maybe seven, eight inches of rainfall especially up in the north bay. what's nor important than rainfall, snowpack. that's what replenishes reservoirs and water plies for the summer months. a lot of snowfall on the way as well. before we get to the snowpack, what we are expecting, want to show you what's happening now. live with bob redell, he joins us at the san mateo bridge. our radar's lightening up. where you are, you're in a lull. how has it been? how are commuters responding to the wet weather coming in in the heart of the morning drive? >> reporter: good morning to you. here in foster city, you can see eastbound 92, going across the san mateo bridge behind me, where traffic is at the limit. only event we had this morning, over an hour ago. take a look, we had a band of rain that came through here. and it gave a good heavy drizzle, is the way i put it, five minutes and then

disappeared. we've had on and off ever since then. nothing to affect the commute, at least not yet. between 8:00 and 11:00. so in another hour, we are expecting more bands to be coming through the greater bay area to be hitting your major roadways trying to get into work. yes, that is later in the commute. but it's still during the commute. if you are headed to work, leave now before that time or at least add some time to your drive time so you get into work on time in and the boss isn't angry. the sign behind me here is not lit up. usually when we have the rain events you see a high wind advisory. i bring this up because there isn't much wind here. it's relatively calm, especially the top of the incline and san mateo bridge. roads are somewhat wet, wetter more in the north bay and san francisco. not so much south throughout the bay area. again, between 8:00 and 11:00,

today. starting up right now up in tahoe. we could accumulate today and tomorrow potentially up to two feet with additional maybe four to five feet if everything works out over the weekend into monday. a lot of rain on the way. don't want to let it catch you off guard. we stop the clock at 8:00 a.m. starting to slam at that point. showers will lighten up. as we progress through the second half of the day, they really lighten up, fair game for on and off showers throughout 4:00 p.m. also the time bull's-eyeing for potential thunderstorms, possible in the higher elevations as we head throughout the afternoon. tomorrow, showers are light but continue. nice break on friday. and then as we head into saturday, atmospheric river comes in. picking up reds, oranges, yellows. this is heavy rainfall. this is what could produce maybe 6, 7 inches of rain in the north bay. saw it last time. up to 12 inches in napa from one storm system. keep that going monday, tuesday,

wednesday. we're tracking this. every single time the models come out, i'm watching them like a hawk for you. this is really good news. mike inouye. >> you say that rain's coming through the south bay. i turn cameras around. we don't see a lot of rain on the roadway at this camera, 101. a damper, at least. you see a glow in the air, moisture in the air. this is slowdown north 101 north of the 680/280 interchange. the map, we see slowing on sensors for the area here north from capitol expressway where things dip as far as the speeds approaching allen rock. green highlighted, the radar kicked in to triggering rain sensors to come in as well. that reports where you might have damp roadways. no puddling on the major freeways. north 87 as well as north 85. as rain comes through, the cars hitting roadways as well, a bad combination for the commute. dramatic slowing over the next 2030 minutes.

nbc bay area.com. we've put interactive radar on the front page to track the storm straight to your doorstep. breaking news at 6:51. san francisco police are questioning suspects involved in an overnight hit-and-run crash. you can see damage here. several people were hurt when an suv sideswiped, flipping it over several times. the collision happened 1:00 at very busy intersection of geary and van ness in the city. "today in the bay's" christie smith live by the crash scene with an update on the investigation. i understand changes, christie? >> reporter: good morning to you. let me start by saying busy van ness is clear for the morning commute except all of the rain dumping on us. what happened here, getting a clearer picture, a car was going down geary and it plowed into an suv coming down van ness. that's clear. but it took out a traffic signal that's still down in the median

this morning. witnesses are telling us, after the impact, the people in the car, a couple of them got out and ran, this as the suv rolled over and came to a stop at that traffic signal. now if you know the area, this is on van ness, right by a busy spot. had to be closed down while pair are medics came and helped the injury. >> girl had blood on her face. she was panicked. and then some girls, girl who was standing here, they just say, oh, they might stole the car. so once they hit the character all of the people in the car just ran away. >> reporter: witnesses are saying that police chased down those who ran away and this morning, police were telling us they were trying to determine which of those people were the driver, because everyone who left the scene is accounted for. the latest information they do know who the driver is.

six people taken to the hospital. but they mainly had nonlife-threatening injuries and expected to be okay. christie smith, "today in the bay." update it a developing story. today, search crews will use cadaver dogs, small bull dozers and hands to dig through the mud that obliterated more than 30 homes in a washington town. much of the population of the town of oso still missing. yesterday, crews pulled two more bodies from the mud, bringing the total number of the dead to 16. they're not counting eight additional bodies workers have found but have not been able to recover. officials say the list of people missings a shrinking, as survivors call in from a nearby town that lost power. new this morning, another issue with the domestic malaysian flight. this one forced to turn back because of, check this out, one of the engines catching fire. you can see the picture here. they say the plane landed safely, no one injured the

airline has only been in business one year. that scare comes hours before the announcement confirming images show 122 pieces of debris floating in the water where crews are searching for flight 370. 12 planes and 2 ships from several countries including the u.s. scouring the indian ocean for any signs of wreckage. weather conditions have improved allowing yous to continue searching in areas the size of alaska. >> ceo of target will face questions about the security breach. testifying before a senate committee whether the company ignored early warning signs about the holiday season's cyberattack. the company says 40 million payment card records stolen with 70 million other records. a report released by the senate committee yesterday says target ignored automated warnings that malwar was being installed on target systems.

the cfo is one of six who will testify. ellen richie will testify, the chief enterprise risk officer of foster city-based visa. california lawmakers reconsidering a new law that will require all chefs and bartenders to wear gloves when they touch food. the committee voted roo-to-repeal and revisit that regulation. this requires workers wear gloves when handling ready to eat food. some say the bill needs to be more specific. the berkeley city council fighting back against big oil companies after reports more shipments coming into the bay area by rail. council directed the city attorney to join any lawsuits over the transportation of oil from canada and north dakota to bay area refineries. the city will oppose permits or environmental impact reports from refineries planning to start oil shipments by rail.

the deadly crash from fremont yesterday, we have learned the rider killed in the crash was a marine, who just returned home from afghanistan. another man, yohn, driving drunk and running from police when he smashed into the motorcyclist. the driver just kept going, and crashed into a pole. he was later taken into custody. more arrests expected in connection to a house fire in mountain view. 14 people, including 12 minors, already under arrest, accused of setting the house on fire, possibly to cover up a burglary. an 18-year-old, both charged with burglary and child endangerment. they were part of a group that spent several days partying at home while the owner was on have a vacation. the partying began march 7th. march 16th, three teens started a fire inside the home. several items including a car had been stolen.

the house was a total loss. the car was found in one piece. people hope new surveillance cameras will catch the person responsible for poisoning lawns in the south bay. this is near moreland way and saratoga. the first incident happened in 2012, recently 30 yards hit. whatever poison is used, it causing large swatches to die. people suspect the retaliation for those who use water during conservation for their lawn. residents think the culprit is getting bolder. they've put up $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. police have no information on the suspect at this time. lawns and gardens are getting a good, free drenching out there. >> you can still turn those sprinklers off if scheduled to come on today. probably through the next eight days it's safe to turn them off. a lot of rainfall on the way. live radar shows you rainfall
