nbc's keir simmons is in kuala lumpur. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. these objects have been seen on these french satellite images 1,500 miles from the coast of australia, 122 objects to look for as the search by air and sea gets underway again today after weather prevented searching yesterday. >> reporter: 12 aircraft took off this morning looking for 122 objects now spotted in satellite images. some debris as much as 75 feet in length, the malaysian transportation minister said this morning. the images he said will help direct the difficult search for the aircraft and the 259 souls on board. >> they don't know where he is. and they're not going to know, it looks like for quite a while. >> reporter: for now, the parents of philip wood from texas don't even have their

son's body to bury. >> i miss him. i already do. but i still have hope. either way, i have hope. >> relatives, furious, are looking to the u.s. courts to help. the first petition in chicago from the family of this indonesian passenger after a search hampered by confusion. today, this cargo plane was thought to deliver an unmanned deep water submarine and sonar from the u.s. but using them is itself a slow process. >> i like to think of it like mowing the lawn. you want to cover every bit of the sea surface. >> while the families are left waiting again. come home fast, daddy, days the daughter of the chief steward sending him messages on twitter. and yesterday, physically and mentally tired. still hoping for a miracle. philip wood's folks saw him for a week on a recent trip home. they hadn't spent that kind of time with him for years.

>> don't ever forget to hold close the people you love. and certainly god gave me that opportunity that last week with philip. >> reporter: it's worth remembers. just behind the daily headlines, so crucial, such crucial news. families still coming to terms with the news they heard a few days ago, matt. >> back to this new possible debris connected to this flight. the french satellite images taken on march 23rd. is this the exact same area where the other two pieces of debris or objects were seeing about a week ago? >> reporter: it is the same kind of area. 1,500 miles off the coast of australia. and we are beginning to hear, matt, some news from some flights coming back. we're hearing that three objects were spotted, two of them thought to be rope. another p3 aircraft spotted a blue object. here is the frustrating thing, matt. apparently they go back around

and they can't find those objects they saw previously. so we've said many times it's an incredibly difficult area to search. that continues to be the case. the ships and aircraft will be going to where these objects were spotted by the french satellite. the question is, can they find them, matt? >> keir simmons, i heard an expert talking about the currents in that area of the south indian ocean that objects can move three feet per second. that's how strong the currents are. >> incredibly frustrating for the searchers. meantime, back here, breaking news overnight, as on the devastating mudslide in washington state. emergency crews located even more victims over the night. nbc's joe fryer in darrington, washington, this morning. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the massive search will resume today with the death toll still rising. two more bodies were recovered bringing the official death toll to 16. officials say another eight bodies have been located but not recovered. there could be as many as 24 victims with many still missing. >> reporter: rescue teams are still searching for signs of

life. but after another day of looking through the massive mudslide, all they found was disappointment. >> unfortunately, we didn't find any signs of life. we didn't locate anybody alive. >> relatives confirmed one of the victims is christina jeffers, the wife of a firefighter, their 4-month-old granddaughter is still missing. overnight, hundreds gathered for a candle light vigil. and in the logging town of darrington, train volunteers were allowed to help out. >> the last three days, the most effective tool has been dogs and just our bare hands and shovels uncovering people. >> dean brunner is searching for his sister, summer raffo. >> my mom wants to hold her one last time, and i'm going to make sure that happens. >> he ventured into the slide zone documenting his heartbreaking mission. >> well, today's a dark day for this family. >> reporter: he thinks the mud is at least 10 feet deep where he's standing. >> it's just devastation. somewhere out there is my sister.

>> we just want him home. >> another search ever, frank hattaway was injured, hit in the head by debris and twisted his knee while searching for his brother. meanwhile, five pulled from the debris on saturday are still being treated. >> people with brain injuries, rib fractures, pelvic fractures and very severe extremity injuries as well. >> the mudslide hit with no warning saturday morning when many people were home. >> there's a mudslide. the houses are gone! >> reporter: officials say a small earthquake 12 days earlier may have contributed to the slide. in 2006, a smaller portion of the same hillside gave way. and in 1999, a report from the u.s. army corps of engineers warned of the potential for a large, catastrophic failure here. >> we've done everything we could to protect them. we mitigated the landslide from 2006. there's been warnings and advanced notifications of the high risk of landslides. >> reporter: about 200 people

are now helping with this search, including teams from fema and the national guard. savannah? >> i know they'll be back at it today, joe, but what are the conditions as they try to dig through this debris? >> reporter: the conditions are very difficult, especially with all the rain in the last day. it's hard to get in and out of the zone. once there, people say it's like walking on quicksand or the fire chief says it's like walking on ice. we're hearing descriptions about the shear power of this. it was so strong, it crushed a car into a ball. people who live here understand the dangers but didn't expect anything as massive as this, savannah. there was another mudslide in 2006, but this one is so much greater. back to you. >> just devastating. joe fryer, thank you. we turn now to a new embarrassment for the secret service. three agents who were preparing for the president's arrival in europe earlier this week have been sent home after one of them

was found drunk in a hotel. nbc's peter alexander is in brussels, traveling with the president. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. we're watching president obama wrapping up a news conference with the leaders of the european union, trying to show a united front with europe, making it clear in this conference that the u.s. stands united on ukraine, united to isolate russia and united to impose costs on russia. as for the secret service scandal, this latest incident happened just hours before president obama arrived here in europe. with president obama this morning paying respects to fallen soldiers, he's dealing with another embarrassing episode. u.s. secret service sources confirmed that one of the agents was found drunk and passed out in the hallway of the president's hotel in amsterdam

sunday morning, barely 24 hours before president obama arrived for a week of intense international diplomacy. hotel security contacted the u.s. embassy in the netherlands which in turn alerted secret service managers, including the agency's new director julia pearson who is traveling with president obama on this trip. in total, three employees were sent home sunday for what a spokesman called disciplinary reasons. the "washington post" reports all three were members of the secret service's elite counterassault team known as c.a.t. it comes two years after another high-profile secret service scandal where a dozen agents and officers in colombia ahead of the president's arrival there brought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms after a night of heavy drinking. the president called the agents' behavior unacceptable. >> we're representing the people of the united states, and when we travel to another country, i expect us to observe the highest standards because we're not just representing ourselves. >> afterward, the secret service

announced a new code of conduct, with tightened standards which sources say these agents violated. officials insist the president's security was never at risk. the white house isn't commenting. matt? >> peter alexander in brussels. thank you. >> here at home, millions dealing with one last blast of winter. at least we hope it's the last one. it could dump more than a foot of snow on parts of cape cod. and that means we find "today's" dylan dreyer out in the elements once again. she's in chatham, mass, this morning. dylan, you look cold. >> good morning, savannah. i am. so much for that sprin huh? this is a massive winter storm. and it's actually sitting and staying about 150 miles offshore. believe it or not, we are just getting brushed by the western end of this storm system. parts of washington, d.c.

yesterday ended up with 3 inches of snow. that was a record and southern new jersey ended up with about 6 inches of snow out of the quick-moving storm system. here in chatham, massachusetts, we're looking at about seven to ten inches of snow over the course of the morning and early into this afternoon. but it is the wind that shows the sheer intensity of this storm. we've seen wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. and as this storm intensifies, as it gets stronger, we can see winds gusting up to near 75 miles per hour. this is the fourth time this winter that blizzard warnings have been issued on martha's vineyard. and al, there is a sheer improvement. if you go just west of here, the snow lightens up, but really there's no escaping the wind in this one. >> almost nothing in boston right now, dylan, thanks so much. get inside, warm up. thanks so much for the report. this system, give you an idea. look how tightly wound this is. this thing is more wound up than matt lauer. >> nice. i'm just sitting here.

>> i can't do it. amen, hallelujah. >> thank you, al. >> thank you, al. >> oh, boy. >> tamron's in for natalie this morning. natalie continues on vacation. you've got some of the other top stories. >> few things to report this morning. good morning, everyone. dramatic new video surfaced of monday's subway train derailment in chicago. the surveillance video shows the train, look at this, careening past the end of the track and onto an escalator at o'hare international airport. it is heart stopping. more than 30 people were injured. thankfully, none of them seriously. now, investigators say the train's operator may have dozed off shortly before the crash. so that investigation continues. a congressional report raises new questions about how one of the alleged boston marathon bombers was able to re-enter the united states despite being put on a watch list. the report says the name tsarnaev was misspelled on the watch list.

losing track of his movements. tam land tsarnaev was killed during a shootout last year. his younger brother is awaiting trial in the bombings. a reprieve for people trying to sign up for obamacare health insurance. white house officials saying those in line for enrollment by phone or website will be able to complete their transactions beyond the march 31st deadline. the health and human services department says there has been a last-minute surge in demand. problems this morning for the soyuz spacecraft carrying an american astronaut and two cosmonauts. it was supposed to take six hours to reach the international space station and dock. but nasa says the arrival will be delayed until thursday because the spacecraft missed a course-changing engine burn. nasa said the crew, though, is not in danger. and we've got incredible video this morning that shows a car slamming into a convenience

store at full speed. take a look. the car was speeding off an exit ramp in connecticut when it hit some cars, and then went airborne into the store. the video is from a security camera across the street. four people were injured in that crash, including the driver. police say she had an elevated blood alcohol level and a suspended license. and so much for learning from your mistakes. police say a man walked out of a new jersey prison last week after serving 15 years for robbing a children's shoe store. they say he hopped a bus and headed straight back to the same stride rite store in toms river and robbed it again. in 199925-year-old christopher miller was arrested for forcing employees to the back of the store and splitting with the cash. he's 40 years old now and old habits die hard because police say he did it again and is back in jail just hours after he was released. 7:16.

>> reporter: frightening moments caught on camera tuesday, as cell phone video captured a five-alarm fire that left a construction worker dangling dangerously from a balcony. >> oh, my jesus. >> the worker stood outside the fifth floor as the massive blaze engulfed the $50 million apartment complex still under construction. karen jones works across the street and started recording when she saw the fire. >> it was very scary. we were all near the windows just people were afraid, you know, people were just wondering, oh, gosh, is this man going to make it? are they going to get to him? >> the worker waved for help before hanging down and jumping to a lower balcony as the inferno inched ever closer. >> oh, my god. >> oh, no, oh, no. oh, my god. >> i was really just fearful that he wasn't going to make it off of that ledge. and when he jumped and he slipped, we just -- we were

overnight crash are now being questioned by authorities. witnesses tell us an suv rolled several times after hit by another car at intersection of geary and van ness. six people hurt in that crash. the deputy killed in the line of duty will be laid to rest today. killed in a shoot-out with a suspect last week. the funeral begins at 10:00 at ft. bragg and preceded by a procession of law enforcement vehicles. another local news update in a half hour. hope you get a chance to stay dry.

what could be 122 pieces of debris from malaysian air flight 370. but so far, none has been located on the water and retrie retrieved. three secret service agents pulled from the president's trip to europe and sent home. one was found drunk the day before the president arrived. and the prosecution has wrapped its case at the murder trial of oscar pistorius. the defense is expected to take the next couple of days to speak with some of the state's witnesses who did not testify before beginning its case on friday. and still ahead, from crashes to floods, we're going to take you inside a one of a kind facility that prepares first responders for all sorts of disasters. plus, a big celebrity split. gwyneth paltrow and chris martin have announced their separation. they are calling it a, quote, conscious uncoupling. what does that mean? should we all learn from that? we're going to get more on that. >> maybe she's trying to teach

people -- >> some information on it on the website. all right. let's begin this half hour with an exclusive look at a dangerous journey. the challenge faced by prince harry and a team of veterans wounded in combat as they raced across antarctica. >> reporter: up at nearly 10,000 feet on the antarctic plateau, prince harry and three teams of wounded veterans are racing 130 miles to the south pole. pulling 175-pound sleds for team usa are a blind paratrooper, an amputee, a survivor of a suicide bombing, and a soldier with a traumatic brain injury. >> seems to be holding up. >> reporter: the teams couldn't be further than where they were a month ago. before leaving for antarctica, harry arranged a very special sendoff. >> i was excited the first time

tucson. and this is a dust storm that blew up. three cars in -- three accidents there. luckily, nobody seriously injured. pretty impressive stuff. this is early for this time of year for this to be happening. normally, you don't see this until later on early summer. let's show you what else we've got going on. and unfortunately, we've got not just one, but two major storms that are going to be making their way into the pacific northwest where they do not need it, of course. you've got oso with the landslide happening. you can see the rain coming in. we are going to be looking. seattle, looking at wet weather right through the evening. and we're going to be watching these storms come in over the next five days. one storm comes in, heavy rain on thursday, second storm comes in late friday into saturday, and the rain just continues. over the next five days, some areas picking up 7 to 10 inches of rain into central and southern california. but look at this, this is where

the landslide took place. they're going to be looking at anywhere from 1 to 5 inches of rain. and they do not need meanwhile, we desperately need. we have a lot of rain on the radar. own thing we don't like is the timing in the morning drive. slow commute, along 101 and 280, north end of the peninsula, getting hit the hardest, showers intensify over the bay bridge. yeah, as we head throughout the next couple of hours it's going to be pretty bad. we are going to see showers lighten up a touch. more on the way through the next two hours. through 11:00, everything breaks apart. and that's your latest weather. >> al, thank you so much. well, as we've shown you in the last week alone, rescue crews have been called to a devastating mudslide in washington, kids caught on ice and a train derailment. how do first responders prepare to face those situations and

objects, most of them small, but one of them 75 feet long. now, that's the largest number of objects seen so far. but the problem is, there was a disconnect between what's seen from space and what the crews based here can see at 200 or 300 feet. there have been dozens of missions so far, but very, very little seen. 12 planes went out today, two ships were in the search area, nothing sighted. the visibility, very poor. and the bad news is the search was suspended yesterday because of bad weather. more bad weather is on the way. tamron? >> all right, bill, thank you. rescue teams resume searching for signs of life this morning at the scene of that massive mudslide in washington state. joe fryer from darrington, washington, with the latest there. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. two more bodies were recovered bringing the official death toll to 16, but officials say another

eight bodies were located and have not been recovered. there could be as many as 24 victims. meanwhile, the search is expected to resume today. 200 people are helping out, including teams from fema and the national guard. also, a small group of local well-trained volunteers. people who have experience with chain saws, heavy machinery, people who know this area well have also been allowed inside. many of them are searching for their own friends and relatives. it is a difficult search with all the rain over the last few days. some describe it like walking on quicksand or ice. officials say they promise to keep looking until everyone is accounted for. a daring rescue was caught on camera tuesday after fire swept through a huge apartment complex under construction in houston. one worker was trapped on top on a top floor balcony. he was able to jump to a lower balcony where firefighter on a ladder was just able to reach him. moments later, a wall of that building, you see it there

and she said the test was over, and this was at the end of april. and i thought, my gosh. what are we communicating to our kids if they think the test is the most important thing and then after the test is over, learning ends. so we definitely have an issue in this country in too many schools and too many districts where there's an overemphasis on testing. >> yeah. i hear this all the time. we've got the elas here in new york starting next week, by the way, so my kids are in the whole standardized testing moment right now. we asked our viewers what they thought about this. our facebook page exploded. john wrote to us, standardized tests teach nothing, just another bubble for students to dread filling in. we got a lot of that. and i mean a lot of that. we also heard from people like this, we heard from mike who said without minimum standards being set, some school districts may choose to have low standards. how do we find a balance, michelle? >> well, that's absolutely right. i mean, at the same time this teacher is resigning in

massachusetts, last week there was a study that came out in massachusetts that said that two-thirds of employers in that state were saying that they can't find people, employees, who have the skills and knowledge necessary to fill their jobs. we know there's a huge disconnect that exists. >> are they going to get those skills and knowledge from standardized testing? >> no, but we can use standardized testing to measure whether or not kids are actually learning what they need to learn, right? while recent international test results show that the u.s. is now 26th out of 30 something nations in math. and the bottom line, the kids today who are in school today in america are going to be competing for jobs against the kids in india and china, not against the kids in the state next door. so we really do have to make sure that our kids can compete in the global marketplace. >> all right, michelle. i want to tell you, when we went online and asked people are standardized tests the best way to have kids learn?

much more on that in a second. we start, though, with another story, a bad story for the secret service. three agents preparing for president obama's arrival in the netherlands have been sent home after one was found drunk and passed out in the hallway of the president's hotel in amsterdam sunday morning. a secret service spokesman said the agents were sent home for, quote, disciplinary reasons. the "washington post" is reporting all three were members of the elite counter assault team. these are the best of the best. >> topnotch. >> that c.a.t. group. misbehavior allegedly comes three years after another high-profile secret service scandal. a dozen agents in colombia ahead of the president's arrival brought prostitutes back to the hotel rooms after nights of heavy drinking. at the time, the president called their behavior unacceptable. i think that goes without saying. >> don't they have a new code of conduct being instituted? >> they did. they instituted a new code of conduct. we haven't heard from the white house yet this morning. but, i mean, this is serious

business. we're talking about protecting the president of the united states. and these guys -- and i hate when three guys ruin an incredible group of americans who do amazing work 24 hours a day. >> and not just protecting the president. a lot of people don't know the secret service is involved in so much in this country. from currency, counterfeiting to all sorts of things. these guys are all on the front lines. so you get a few knuckle heads doing something and cast a black eye on all of them. >> and, of course, let me first start by saying, i'm not defending this at all, but i do wonder if it's the behavior a reflection of it being a high-stress job. why would you make -- again, not justifying, but, you know, the whole recklessness of the prostitution thing in colombia and to pass out drunk while you know you are working to protect the president abroad is, i don't know, it's -- >> especially after what happened. >> right. is it the stress? do they not screen them? what's going on? i don't understand it. >> i think they're guys out having a good time and they got

drunk. >> i mean, people get a little tipsy, they're passed out. >> and by the way, you make it two more steps inside the door, there's no story. don't pass out in the hallway of a hotel, generally speaking. >> that's extreme behavior. >> but it may also be you've got a whole new generation. a lot of these secret service agents all were ex-military. >> yep. >> and as you have fewer and fewer people out of that pool, perhaps, you know, the chain of command that sort of thing has become somewhat weakened. >> we should point out, again, in a huge organization, there's a couple of isolated incidents. >> they do an amazing job. >> they do. >> willie alluded as we showed you a little bit of this unbelievable video of a daring rescue in houston yesterday. karen jones works across the street started recording this. when she saw this fire engulf this massive under construction apartment complex. there's this construction worker on the top floor as almost the top floor as this blaze spreads quickly. he's waving for help trying to

get -- you can see. so what happens is, he swings from that top balcony, lands on that one. but here's the amazing thing, they're waiting to get the ladder a little bit closer. they do. and just as they make the rescue, watch what happens to the building to that top floor. he makes it on, and now watch this. >> just seconds later here. >> ten seconds. this thing, the top floor collapses. there it goes. there it goes. >> wow. and that ladder just cleared. >> that cleared. they just get it out of the way. that could've turned out so much -- on so many levels could've turned out so much worse. >> you can hear someone in the background saying they got him. they got him. from their vantage point, they probably didn't know, you know, the depth of perception from where they were standing. >> first, when he does that swing on to that balcony, he could've easily fallen back.

the they didn't release the construction worker's name, but he is reportedly doing fine this morning. and i think it's like a $50 million complex that has now been destroyed. >> and no injuries in that entire fire. no injuries. the other incredible thing. if you watch the clip of the woman filming it. they're inside the building behind the glass across the street and they say we feel the heat. they're indoors, imagine what that construction worker was feeling. and he kept his calm. >> isn't that remarkable? >> he was patient and said i've got to get off this floor. makes a really bold move to swing down to the balcony below. he was calm the entire time. >> can we start from the beginning? just to see that. it's amazing the physical dexterity this guy has when he swings out. there he is. >> oh, my god. >> he's waving. >> he said give me a little room. >> look at that. >> look how close the fire is. >> oh, no! >> there he is. >> wow. >> they talk about a matter of

inches. >> he was in survival mode. >> yes, he was. >> he's like, these are my options, this is what i've got to do. >> brave firefighters on that ladder. >> oh, man. he's okay and everybody's okay, which is incredible. >> what is not okay is a decision made at a school -- yeah, this is crazy. a 9-year-old colorado girl shaved her head to support her friend. and this is her move of solidarity. we've seen people do this for loved ones that they care greatly about. cameron renfro wanted to make delaney clemens feel less alone. so she asked delaney's mom to shave her head. delaney lost her hair in chemotherapy. she has a rare form of childhood cancer. the girls go to different schools. so on monday, cameron's school in grand junction said she could not return until her hair grew back. under this charter school's dress code, shaved heads are not permitted. they want everyone to fall in line and basically be the same. well, cameron's mom who is

phenomenal took to facebook. she was not going to take it. her story from facebook went viral. so last night, the school board decided to take up the vote. what would they do to little cameron for her act of bravery and love? well, they decided that she could come back to school. 3-1 vote. there was still one person on the board who said, cameron should not be able to come back to school. i don't understand it. >> what could have been a really positive, teachable moment, caught, unfortunately, a completely different lesson. that if you go out of your way and try to do something good for somebody, there are going to be people with closed minds and, you know, just mean spirits to kind of try to trample your dream. but they stuck it out and got -- >> and are your precious rules more important than a little girl standing by a friend and

♪ welcome back to "today" on this wednesday morning, march 26th, 2014. i'm willie along with al and tamron. we'll tell you about something really cool going to happen in may. i'll be hosting a two-hour special airing on the discovery channel produced by peacock productions called everest jump live. professional climber, attempting to become the first person to jump off the summit of the world's highest peak wearing a winged suit. and here to tell us about it. great to see you, man. >> thanks, thanks for having me. >> the first thing you have to do is summit mt. everest, and then you're going to jump off the peak. help me understand it. >> well, it's pretty simple.

as my complicated as it sounds, we'll do an expedition to everest, a team with discovery channel, and we will climb to the summit, i'll change from my climbing suit into my wing suit, and then i'll jump off the top, fly down and land at base camp. >> you're going to be dropping 11,000 vertical feet traveling up to 150 miles per hour. how do you land? >> well, that's sort of the trick. >> yeah. >> you know, how do you take off and how do you land? those are things, i'm going to use the suit, but there'll be accessories because the way the mountain is shaped, it's going to be top secret stuff. you have to watch the show to see how it works. >> you know there are people out there saying, are you crazy? what are you thinking? why are you doing this? what do you have to prove to the world, man? >> i hear that a lot, actually. every day. no, it's something i've been working on, project iv've been working on for a long time. so my goal and my dream is really to combine those two and

the biggest project i could think of to do is to jump it off everest. >> for people who aren't familiar with what exactly a wing suit is, what will this trip off the peak look like for you? >> well, i have a lot of distance to cover. about 5 1/2 miles. like i said, i'm using a combination of different accessories to the suit that will allow me to jump off. sort of a multistage flight jump. the suit i'm wearing, you can see it right there. it's a little bit different. it's what we call a tracking suit. it's a smaller version of a wing suit. to have the bigger version doesn't really help me. this is very super high performance suit. and will be more like a missile when i launch off the top. >> wow. >> we always know what happens to missiles. so this is an interesting concept. >> yeah. >> and by the way, he basically he basically swede walked to the top of mt. everest. made it up in nine hours. >> i used to a few years ago. i would do it solo. did it 9 1/2 hours. >> showoff. >> i'm honored to be a part of
