from nbc news this is "today" with kathie lee gifford and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hello everybody. it is "winesday wednesday," march 26th. delighted you're with us. >> you know what didn't drop by? the snow. >> i can smell snow. >> what are you talking about? >> i went out around 3:00 yesterday and went it's not going to snow. i can tell. >> what does it smell, moist? >> you're not supposed to say that word.
2:08 am
>> it was snowing in chatum, massachusetts. it looked crazy. shakira was outside killing it with her "hips don't lie" song. we find fans. these happened to be at the back of the bus. this was their lucky day. we picked them and moved them up front. take a look. two people are stephanie and jacob from castle rock. >> shakira, can we steal you for one second? >> of course. >> these guys want to do a selfie. are you ready? cozy up. everybody up. one two, three. she rocked it. >> they were crazy. >> you never know what's going to happen if you come by the plaza. >> a lot of people don't realize shakira is not just a great --
2:09 am
she has albums in 60 countries. >> she has a school she started. god love her. there's sad news in celebrityville. >> gweneth paltrow and chris martin announced -- i thought it was going to be a divorce. they have different terms. it's called conscious uncoupling. >> that's what they call it. conscious uncoupling. they released a statement on her website called goop. >> yep. >> well, here's the thing. people feel a certain way about gweneth paltrow. she comes from -- >> love her mom. her dad passed away. her mom is a doll. sweetheart. >> so terrific. i think people think -- at least the perception is -- that she's high and mighty. when you say conscious uncoupling instead of separation or divorce like regular people say.
2:10 am
gweneth said she asked her dad years ago how he and her mom stayed together. he said we never wanted to get divorced at the same time. it kept working. they have a couple of kids. >> people that stay married are the people that work at their marriage and decide that happiness is not just about you. it's about your children. every one of us. you've been divorced before. i've been divorced before. i'd rather be single truly the rest of my life than be unhappily married again. that i'll say. however, there was a time in my life, the last thing i wanted to be was married still. i was determined my children were never going to have a blip on their radar. i wasn't so much in love with my husband but i was in love with my children. i'm not putting other people down.
2:11 am
that was the deciding thing for me. you know, i'm so grateful that i did you know? kids were talking about it in our production meeting today. they were saying -- there's this new thing they're trying to pass in -- explain that. >> there's a law on the books in massachusetts okay. there's this -- >> it's a proposal. >> a senator wants this. he wants to amend the state 's current divorce law. he says couples who are seeking divorce need to ask a judge's permission before dating or having sex in the home where a child is present. in other words, if you are separated from someone or going through a divorce proceeding, this senator thinks you should have to check with the judge before you bring somebody else home and have a relationship with them. >> right. it's very confusing. it's easier as they get older. one of our producers who we

adore. she says her parents broke up. the first time her mom had someone come pick her up for a date it was devastating for her. i don't know that we consider that all the time when we're miserable ourselves. >> you're right. i think this bill seems totally ridiculous by the way. if someone is going to legislate who you have relationships with. >> i think we should make it far harder to get married and easier to get divorce. a lot of people are over their marriage, but they -- it takes two years in the court system. you know what you're getting into to begin with. >> have a few drink, go to vegas and get married. to get a divorce, you have to wait sometimes years. everyone in new york, when there's no kids and a lot of assets, it stretches on years and years.
2:13 am
if your marriage has been over for some time. >> there are marriages that should end? divorce. i'm not passing judgment on anybody. never stay in a domestic violence situation ever. >> right. >> some things don't work. a lot of people are miserable, get divorce. then they realized the problem was me. they see it in the next relationship. they think that was the love of my life. >> are you depressed now? how about that? this senator didn't pass it any way. >> it makes you discuss. >> one out of two marriages do not last. >> let's talk about the voice. this is important. the battle rounds are continuing. this is an nbc news special report. here's matt lauer. >> and good morning. i'm matt lauer in new york.
2:14 am
we're coming on the air this morning as president obama arrives at the vatican for his first-ever meeting with pope francis. it's the 28th time the u.s. president and a pope have met, either at the vatican or in the united states. the first time though that these two heads of state will be meeting face to face. the president's motorcade coming into st. peter's square. it will be taken up to the san damaso courtyard where the president will exit the motorcade and be greeted by dignitaries from the vatican. from there he'll be escorted to the second loggia and up to the apostolic palace where he will meet for an undetermined amount of time, maybe 45 or 50 minutes, with pope francis. a lot to talk about. this meeting comes at the end of a very busy, perhaps even stressful, week of meetings for the president in europe. nbc's peter alexander has been traveling with the president and he is in vatican city this morning. peter, is this something more than just an elaborate photo op?
2:15 am
is there real substance to what they'll talk about today? >> well, i think the white house hopes that there will certainly be some substance to this conversation as well. the president has been very complimentary of pope francis. this is obviously the world's most powerful political leader and the world's most powerful religious leader coming together. president obama complimenting pope francis for his message of caring, for his message of income inequality, global poverty has been a significant focus for this pope. income inequality has been a message president obama has tried to focus on at home, the white house indicating that's one of his priorities. two meetings will take place here. first the president has his one on one with pope francis that will last aboutfy minutes. that's where the sort of ceremony takes place. the politics, the greater detail of conversations, including concerns that exist among the world's catholics about some of the administration of the united states' policies will likely take place in a separate meeting
2:16 am
that will happen with the vat tan secretary of state. the president will be joined in that meeting by national security adviser susan rice as well as his secretary of state john kerry. >> peter, stand by. i'm joined in new york by anne thompson who's covered the catholic church nor nbc news for a long time, the person to go to if you're looking for a great restaurant in roemt. nice to see you. we've been watching this pope carefully over the first year of his papacy. from what you've seen of him, the lack of formality, the reaching out to the poor what do you think the tone of this meeting's going to be like? >> i expect it will be very cordial. when you meet pope francis he immediately puts you at ease. he's very warm, he's very welcoming. and i expect he will do the same with president obama. they have issues that they agree on. immigration and poverty, trying to lift people out of poverty. but the issues where they disagree on are syria, most notably, when the pope came out and prayed for peace in syria when the president was
2:17 am
considering military action. then of course the issue of abortion which is a big issue. in the press release issue, the vatican previewed that the pope would address the issue of the discrepancy mandate under the affordable care act. i think that surprised a lot of people because they expected the focus to be on immigration and poverty as opposed to that. >> as we watch the president's motorcade now entering san damaso courtyard where he will be greeted by these dignitaries of the vatican, many of them lined up in the background there, will there be direct conversation, will this be something where they can tackle these issues of syria, the middle east, ukraine, crimea, head-on? or is this going to be a more nuanced conversation? >> i think it will be a more nuanced conversation. there will be a translator present because the pope is not comfortable speaking in english. he is very comfortable speaking in italian or spanish. so you can expect that. but i think, look, this is --
2:18 am
they are both politicians. and so they will speak the language of politicians. but the pope is also known for being very blunt. so it will be interesting to see what happens here. >> the second time that president obama has met with a sitting pope. he met with pope benedict xvi, that was back in 2009. what was the outcome of that meeting? >> well, i think the most interesting thing that happened in that meeting was the gifts that pope benedict gave the president afterwards, and he gave him the vatican's treatise on bio ethics and the dignity of human life. one of the things we'll be watching for in this meeting is what gift does pope francis give to this president? when he met with vladimir putin, pope francis gave him a piece of artwork. when he met with benjamin netanyahu he also gave him a piece of artwork. if he gives president obama something.
2:19 am
>> the vatican blog had an interesting take," it will be filled with splichl and substance and contrast." it writes "a young president growing older and more frustrated and an old pope who seems to be growing younger and more empowered. the pope and the president could have a unique discussion on how to keep hope and change alive in their demanding offices amid challenging times." what's your take on that? >> well, matt, i think what's most striking about this conversation that will take place between these two men today, perhaps there's no two living people who have had their every utterance parsed for meaning as thoroughly and consistently as president obama and pope francis. these are two men who know that everything they say, their expressions, can communicate so much to the people that are watching them so closely today. the vatican put out a statement with just in advance of the president's arrival basically saying that this conversation takes place in the context of a complex phase of the administration's relations with
2:20 am
the church of the u.s., in reference specifically to the implementation of the affordable care act commonly referred to of course as obamacare. and specific with its mandating of coverage by employers to provide their employees with contraceptives. that's an issue that the church obviously has big concerns with as well. the supreme court has obviously taken up that issue back home as well. the president, we are hearing from italian news reports via u.s. and vatican diplomats, likely extent an invitation to pope francis over the course of their visit today to come to the united states. that could happen as early as september of 2015. some suggest for what's referred to as the world meeting of families, matt, to take place in philadelphia. >> let's go back to this idea which you just mentioned, the affordable care act, and that provision on health insurance and contraceptives. i spoke to timothy cardinal dolan, archbishop of the new york diocese, i asked about that and whether that would come up,
2:21 am
the supreme court case directly. and he said, no, that's what he was talking about a nuanced approach, he expects the pope to talk to president obama more about government intrusion in religious freedoms as code for that situation, then direct the supreme court situation, or discuss the supreme court situation, directly. >> you know, i think that's a good point you make. i think what's going to be interesting in the course of this conversation is the way the white house, president obama, tries to translate some of the language we've heard from this pope to messages back at home. when for example pope francis speaks about the need to overcome poverty, is he referring specifically to the president's message of income inequality or is he referring to the need for increased foreign aid? beyond that, when he speaks of religious freedom, is he speaking to these issues that exist in the united states? or is he speaking to other places around the world? is he speaking to countries like iran or perhaps is he speaking to both? i think this will all depend on the person who is listening,
2:22 am
each individual will have their own interpretation likely of the remarks that we hear from president obama. a little later today he will speak out about the conversation that's likely after he meets with italy's president a little bit later today. >> peter, stand by again. and where the meeting is going to take place, it's the studio of the pope. we understand the pope will come out and greet the president with a handshake, then they'll walk in, cameras by the way will follow the pope and president inside that studio for about a minute. then they'll be kicked out and the doors will be closed and the private conversations will begin. anything you can add as to the significance of this location, anne? >> this is the epsystolic poll has that they are going to be meeting. you know quite famously, pope francis has refused to tell there in the papal apartment, choosing to live in the casa st. martin instead. he is walking in here and he is going to -- he will go into a room called sala t. ranedo, that is the toranedo hall, then the
2:23 am
pope will come out of his studio to greet the president. and there we can see them moving quite slowly as they walk into the toranedo hall. >> members of the swiss guard at the right of the screen. they have been on duty at the vatican since 1506, charged with protecting the pope and the vatican, and welcoming dignitaries from all around the world, always an impressive sight. >> it really is. there you see the vatican ushers there leading the way into this hall. it is a remarkable sight. and this is one of those events that the catholic church does very well. they do pomp and ceremony better than just about anybody else in the world. and this is really one of those remarkable moments. >> the president stopping to look around. >> there's a lot to look at. beautiful artwork and everywhere you go, ceilings, walls, floors, it really is breathtaking to see. >> the president there alone,
2:24 am
mrs. obama and their daughters returning from china after a few days there, of spring break for the girls. so they're not accompanying the president in europe. i'm sure they would have loved to be here. >> it would be remarkable. they were feeding pandas in shengdu yesterday. he is solo on this trip. i think you saw susan rice, national security adviser, wearing a lace mantilla, that's old school, to meet the pope. this is a much more informal pope. used to be when you would meet a pope you wore black, you didn't wear a lot of jewelry, women woerman till lamantillas. he's not a formal guy. he doesn't require you kiss his ring when you meet him. this is all the pomp and circumstance he has really pushed aside in his papacy. it's fun to watch but he doesn't enjoy it very much. >> he does like a sense of normalcy, the end of formality. he gave an interview and he said he likes to be out among the
2:25 am
people but he cautioned against creating a certain mythology about pope francis. when, for example, it said that he goes out from the vatican at night and feeds the homeless that never even occurred to me, he said, to paint the pope as some kind of superman, a type of star, seems offensive to me. >> yeah, he doesn't like that super pope that rock star image that we all want to put on him. in fact, there was -- somebody painted a picture of pope francis as superman. and it was taken down the next day. he is a very humble man. humility is a very big part of his ministry, of his personal discipline. and he's trying to infuse the church with that. he has said he wants a poor church and a church for the poor. and he is genuinely leading by example, matt. >> and i believe -- i apologize for in the saying it before because i didn't see it. i believe that was john kerry, the secretary of state. >> yes. >> in the background there. he's stopped because now the
2:26 am
president is going to actually get to greet the pope individually. >> here he goes into the pope's studio. accompanied by archbishop bangswine. and we should see the pope momentarily. >> wonderful to meet you. thank you so much. thank you. >> intimate handshake with about 100 photographers snapping pictures every second. and now the two will enter the pope's study. again, cameras allowed in there for just a minute or so. to kind of get a feel for the room. this is the photo op portion of this meeting. >> i'm trying to hear if the pope is speaking english to him. he speaks a little english. as i said, he's not terribly comfortable in it. >> i'm a little surprised by
2:27 am
this setting. i thought maybe they would have two chairs next to each other. but across the desk from one another. are you surprised by that? >> i am. it looks a little formal for pope francis. but -- >> trying to eavesdrop a little on what they might be saying. neither man is wearing a microphone. we're picking up background sounds from the cameras. and this pope is extraordinarily popular right now. recent polls have said among catholics he has an 80% approval rating. among noncatholics, an nbc/"wall street journal" poll, 55% approval rating. 60% of catholics say that this pope in the past year has renewed and strengthened their
2:28 am
faith in the catholic church. >> absolutely. he has reinvigorated the church. he's got people thinking about their faith again. in part because he is emphasizing the social justice aspects of the catholic church. about reaching out to people. about welcoming all to the church. about lifting people up. he has moved this faith from being a faith about rules, back to being a faith about people. and it's really caught the public's imagination. >> as we mentioned before, the cameras now it seems have been ushered out of the private study of the pope. the door will be closed. that meeting will take place, 45 minutes or so, frank discussion, perhaps nuanced discussion of some of the key subjects of the day, the situation in the middle east, syria, ukraine, crimea, hunger, humanitarian aid to the poor, income inequality all on the table. secretary of state kerry. there will be another meeting following the president's private meeting with the pope. and then we should listen and
2:29 am
read carefully the statements this come out of both the vatican and the white house following these meetings. >> we will get a very clear idea of what each side wants to emphasize. and whether it is about immigration, poverty, or whether it is about the contraception mandate. >> as we watch the greeting again, peter alexander, let me bring you in one last time. what's on the president's schedule immediately following this meeting with the pope? >> well, this has already been a whirlwind trip with stops in the netherlands, stops in belgium, finally here. in italy after he does finish his visit with pope francis there's that separate meeting with the vatican secretary of state, that's more like the business conversation. later today he meets with italian leaders, then has a visit at the colosseum. >> thanks for your help, peter alexander, thank you very much as you've followed this president. anne thompson, as always, great to have you with us. >> great to be here. >> we're going to have much more on "today" in just a little while.
