let's start our day with a live look outside right now. san francisco and downtown san jose. the bulk of the rain on its way out of the bay area, but another strong spring storm is on its way in. a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. 4:30 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. let's first check that forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey laura, good morning to you, everybody at home. yeah, we still have lingering activity on the radar but really some severe weather rolled through northern california yesterday. you may just be hearing this for the first time but four tornado reports near sacramento.

we're going to talk about that this morning and what the possibility of anything like that happening here in the bay area would be. i can tell you a few isolated thunderstorms are popping up, light scattered shower activity, the main event tomorrow night. let's to go over. let's say good morning to mike inouye. >> folks, we check for leftovers, that's what die aftering thatting that, we do have damp roads. around the bay not a lot of puddling. that's great. we look at the maps, we note the traffic and weather systems are tied together. the green and blue, blue may be puddling and ponding in the hills off piedmont as well. no major concern. there is the some debris on the approach to the bay bridge. as you saw we had a light flow of traffic. the rest of the bay not even green butdy see a couple of damp patches. no big concerns for the rest of the south bay and the north bay

we see damp roads through san rafael. where the truck is stopping you see the puddling. back to you. >> thanks so much. now on to developing news, state senator lee land yee is out on bail following his arrest and one of the biggest political scandals in recent bay area history. yee returned home last night looking tired following an appearance in federal court and posting $500,000 bail. the fbi says yee was part of an illegal weapons deal. christie smith live in san francisco sun set district with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. senator leland yee has returned home. there are reporters outside of his home. when he did return home he didn't have a lot to say but he did speak quite a bit to undercover agents about illegal campaign contributions and weapons. the state senator made no

comment about the federal charges or the 137-page affidavit that was filed. apparently in federal court he didn't say much but did speak a little to his attorney as searches went on at a number of locations including his home. he was arrested on corruption and arms dealing released on $500,000 bail. his attorney says it's a long and complicated case. >> we will always as in every case enter not guilty pleas, and then the case takes on a life of its own with discovery being provided, motions being made. >> reporter: 25 other defendants were also named including 54-year-old raymond the head of the organization, their offices in china town were part of the raid that went on. chow was the focus apparently of this investigation at first but then yee was tied into it as well. the fbi says that he accepted

illegal campaign contributions in all of this, one document says they were in exchange for introducing medical marijuana legislation and he had involvement in illegal arms deals. he is due back in court on monday. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> one we'll certainly follow. in the meantime, democratic state lawmakers face the media yesterday defending their legislative body and reiterating this behavior is not a reflection what if other senators do. due to term limits yee was in his final term as a state senator and was vying to be california's secretary of state. his colleagues call for his immediate resignation. >> the chairman of the human services committee and to see this thing happen is just a total flabbergast to us and to me. >> it will never set foot on the senate floor again unless or until they are acquitted. >> one l.a. senator is facing his own corruption charges while

another was convicted of perjury and voter fraud earlier this year. senator yee has been stripped of his committee chairmanship and assignments. senator yee has a distinguished yet checkered past. he emigrated at 3 and started his public service career in 1988 when he was elected to the school board. in 1992 he was arrested for shoplifting a bottle of sun tan lotion in hawaii. in 1999 when he was on the board of supervisors he was stopped by police twice on suspicion he was cruising for prostitutes in the mission district. he claimed he was driving home. after his election to the state senate he received hate mail and death threats for his anti-gun control legislation. the fbi says senator yee and a gangster were partners in crime, chow was thought to have cleaned up his act after serving two stints in prison.

senator dianne feinstein honored chow for supposedly turning his life around and helping the community. he has been honored by mayor ed lee, the court documents say chow was the leader of china town street gang with ties to hong kong. >> to hear someone get arrested when they really should be part of the rehabilitation process is disappointing. >> chow was not granted bail. federal attorneys claim he is a flight risk and danger to the community. he is scheduled to be back in court on tuesday. of course stay with nbc bay area for complete continuing coverage of the arrest of state senator leland yee. log on to nbcbayarea.com for the latest updates there you can also find exclusive video of his arrest. new this morning firefighters mopping up in livermore after flames ripped through this apartment complex. one person air lifted to the hospital with serious burns. the red cross now helping 11

others. it happened not far from granada high school. the fire broke out this morning. two apartments were destroyed. an elderly woman is dead after she was hit by a bike on the san jose state campus. the 89-year-old woman was walking on a path with another woman last week when a bicyclist collided with her causing her to fall. she died at the hospital a few days later. police say the bicyclist is cooperating with the investigation. >> the emeryville man accused of drunk driving and crashing into a marine on a motorcycle will make his first court appearance charged with vehicular manslaughter and hit and run resulting in death. investigators say he was drunk driving and trying to get away when he smashed into the motorcycle at fremont boulevard and decoto road. he crashed into a pole down the road where he was taken into custody. the marine had just returned

from afghanistan. >> this story still developing, scores of people once thought to be missing in that massive mud slide in washington turned up safe but crews are still looking for about 90 people who have no been heard from since saturday. 16 people have been confirmed dead and crews found nine additional bodies but not able to get them out of the mud. they acknowledge they might have to leave some victims buried in the debris. >> we find cars that are compacted to the sides of a wash machine alleviates all hope. >> i lost my mother. i lost my babies. and my mom. the most beautiful woman. >> officials say trying to recover every body would be impractical and dangerous.

the mud is 30 to 40 feet deep in places. the chapter of the american red cross sending five more volunteers to support the survivors, three others were deployed earlier this week. national weather service workers will be in the sacramento area to inspect damage from a small tornado. this is video of that category ef-0 twister ripping through roseville. christina mentioned it. a spokesperson says at least 12 homes suffered roof damage, two hit by debris and six have fence damage. more now to our own microclimate forecast. let's take a live look outside. no twisters in the air there over fremont. let's take you further south to san jose, clear skies at least there. today is sort of that transition day before another round of wet weather moves in. christina's watching our skies for us. >> yeah, good morning to you, laura. that's scary, huh. i know. goodness. i can tell you right now that doesn't usually happen in the

state of california. you know, for three years every year we had an ef-0 or better pass through the sacramento valley so i can tell you today we're going to be out of the woods from the severe activity but we have light showers rolling through, this morning we're going to keep that jet stream to the south and showers all day long. we're going to hit the 60s so a little bit warmer throughout than yesterday. but this is what you can anticipa anticipate. these spots of -- flashes of green, all the way throughout the day. we're going to continue until tomorrow. we get a heavy round of rain, much needed rainfall, as you head throughout friday night. so, basically, at 9:00 p.m. on friday when everybody likes to hit the town the rain is going to come in and hit the bay area. throughout the overnight hours that rain starts to intensify, by saturday at 10:00 a.m. we're talking about heavy downpours even in san jose which is great news because we need this rain. taking you to sunday, mostly

dry, monday, tuesday and wednesday we hit that atmospheric river again so we're going to keep adding to the totals that we need so much. i'll tell you how much we expect and we're going to talk more about when we will get another round of potentially severe thunderstorms even in the bay area. that's coming up. let's check your drive. >> as you guys talked with we're transitioning out of rain. we have damp roads. i did move our camera in san jose here closer to where we can see what the conditions are like. damp. an easy flow for north 101 through san jose, north of 680, the bottom of the screen you see yellow scattered throughout the south bay but only down to 60 miles per hour. that's what our sensors are reading. moving to the bay bridge, oakland, oakland hill, berkeley, the green highlighted there still damp roads, a little better than damp. also the bay bridge. chp drove across, got 1/4 a couple of gusts so keep that in mind. our cameras are steady.

here southbound 29 at 37 reports of a single car spin-out. we talk about that, we often see it with slick roadways. yesterday and overnight we had puddling so they might not have dried out. across the bay the san mateo bridge t roadway is drying but the lens has water on. on the peninsula side watching for water but not so bad in palo alto. >> not so bad. we'll take it. still ahead on "today in the bay," an historic meeting between president obama and the pope. several people behind bars accused of stealing luggage at l.a.x., details of the undercover sting coming up.

you're watching "today in the bay." we are watching the skies for you this morning. a little bit of a transition from the rain we had yesterday. more on the way. we'll check the forecast coming up with meteorologist christina loren as we look outside this morning. 4:45. new images from a thai satellite show around 300 objects floating in the indian ocean near missing malaysia flight 370's suspected crash site. the objects are of various sizes and were spotted about 1600 miles from perth, australia. they were taken by satellite on monday but it took two days to process them and they were sent

to malaysian authorities yesterday. it said the objects were about 125 miles away from the french satellite spotted 122 objects earlier this week. planes and ships searched for only a couple of hours today, then stopped because of the bad weather. historic meeting hours ago between president obama and pope francis. after pictures were taken the media was ushered out so the two could meet in private. president obama presented the pope with a custom made chest featuring a variety of fruit and vegetable seeds used in the white house garden tcht pope announced he would open the gardens of the summer residence to the public. the president has been all over europe dealing with the crisis in ukraine, back home republicans think promising more sanctions only if russia goes further into ukraine is the wrong approach. >> how does vladamir putin read that statement by the president of the u.s.? he reads it by saying we got away with it.

>> in the meantime, the international monetary fund says it will loan ukraine's government between 14 and $18 billion to keep the country's economy afloat. >> several people were arrested overnight in southern california as part of a month-long investigation into luggage theft at l.a.x., police served more than two dozen search warrants, people arrested are employees of contracting employees, not the airport itself. investigation involved officers going under cover and working among bag handlers. recent breaches like the one at target causing more people to invest in cyber insurance. for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell, bertha coombs this morning. good morning. >> hey, good morning. you know, when you have seen so many of them now seems a lot of companies are starting to think maybe they need a backup in cyber insurance. the "wall street journal" reports sales of policies picked up in the wake of data breaches at target and elsewhere but not

just large companies, also small businesses and school districts. cyber insurance covers the cost of investigations, notifying customers when there is a breach, data monitoring and legal expenses. futures pointing to a higher start. we start off strong, yesterday we not only erased the gains but the lows of the day. investors pointing to concerns about ukraine with the u.s. and europe, warning that they could take further step russia escalates. nasdaq had its worst day in two weeks, facebook down after its acquisition. we'll get data on unemployment claims, pending home sales and also a final report on fourth quarter gdp that will tell us. the dow starts 16,268 after falling 98, the nasdaq 4173

rolling through. nothing too heavy. enough, though, to get the highway slick in places like palo alto. all of this is moving toward brentwood and discovery bay. really, we're going to see on and off showers today. nothing heavy, nothing like yesterday. that main event is anticipated for friday night into saturday. i'm going to show you that in a minute. on and off rain showers for san francisco, 61 degrees there, 65 on the peninsula, looking good in the sous bay, about 66. we have a slight chance for thunderstorms to develop especially over the higher elevations. but not as good as it was yesterday when we did see that severe weather roll through the sacramento valley. we head throughout the day today it's going to be a lot calmer out there, then things start to ramp up as we head throughout tomorrow night into looks like all the way through the weekend we're going to have the shower chance. we're looking good, we need the rain, i want to give you an idea of what that severe weather did yesterday. look at all of these tornado

reports, reports of funnel clouds just to our east. very close right here to the bay area to see that severe weather. unlikely for us to see tornadic rotation in the bay area. i have to tell you when we see these severe storms we do have a slight chance. so as we continue on we're going to have that chance. it's warm out there, a lot of this moisture coming up from the subtropical latitudes. that's unstable so keep that in mind. futurecast, i want to show you today and into the weekend. on and off showers, same tomorrow, then by saturday at 4:00 a.m. look what's coming in. really heavy rainfall especially in the north bay. we're going to get generous amounts in the south bay. look at all of this yellow at about with 5:00 p.m. on saturday night. it's going to be active out there and hopefully we'll accumulate a couple inches of rain as we head throughout saturday. then we bring that atmospheric river back monday into tuesday, keeping the showers going. we need this rain at this point. so desperately and our chances

are running out. hopefully we'll get good totals. you love tahoe, laura, kirkwood picked up over a foot of powder. maybe six more feet on the way. >> i think i might take advantage of that window of opportunity to head on up. thanks a lot, christina. 4: 4:52. residents of boston mourn for two firefighters who died. a group of firefighters stood in silent tribute outside the fire station where lieutenant ed walsh and firefighter michael kennedy worked. the fire was so intense crews had to call for backup nine times. intense flames forced crews to back up and attack the fire from the outside. in addition to the two firefighters killed, 13 others were injured. investigators say the fire was fueled by high winds that caused a backdraft and explosion. >> the giants return to the bay area but leave two stars behind

rivals will square off tonight at at&t park in the spring training version of the bay bridge series. tim hudson who played for oakland five seasons will take the mound against scott kazmir. our coverage starts at 7:00 p.m. the two giants not making the trip back from arizona, second baseman marco scutaro and jeremy afeld. affeldt with a sprained knee and scutaro with back problems. you can feel it, right. we don't play ball. >> no. but you know what, i still get the aches and pains like a pro because i'm on the couch a lot. we're -- stretch out the legs once in a while. oakland, the bottom of the screen is hagenberger, the northbound area with the headlights i was watching, reports of a fender-bender but sounds like the trailer involved was moved off the road so. we see no problems.
