his home in san francisco's sunset district. almost 24 hours after federal investigators raided his home and arrested him. yee is accused of crimes including trafficking firearms and public corruption. he was released yesterday on $500,000 bail and ordered not to leave the state. christie smith is live outside his home in san francisco with what is next for the california state senator. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. leland yee will be waking up at his sunset district home after posting $500,000 bail. you know, reporters are out here this morning, they were here last night. he didn't have much to say about his mounting legal troubles. accused of accepting money for his campaign in exchange for favors, or accused of speaking with undercover fbi agents, in fact, yee looked tired. the senator has a long list of federal charges filed against him. he appeared in federal court as

raids went on at a number of locations including his home. yee who introduced anti-gun legislation is accused of promising agents he could connect them to illegal arms and he had weapons contracts around the world. his neighbors and constituents, they are stunned. >> very shocking, like you know, i don't expect politician to act this way. >> way too much money in politics. we need to get people away from the money and focus more on helping people. >> reporter: the affidavit names 25 other defendants including a guy named raymond shrim boy chow leader of the chee kung tong organization in china town. the fbi raided their offices yesterday as part of their investigation, it focused on chow in the beginning but a link was made to the senator. yee is facing 120 years total

for six charges plus five more years for gun trafficking. seven charges in all. the fines about $2 thetw$250,00. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> one we will certainly follow. this is not the first time senator yee has dealt with the fbi. according to the chronicle back in 2007, yee gave information the agency used to help convict former san francisco supervisor ed ju. ju pleaded guilty shaking town tea shop owners seeking permits. he later cooperated with the fed telling them how he learned from local politicians including leland yee. >> yee was the biggest name on the list of 26 arrested, part of a massive fbi operation, other bay area political players and some convicted felons are on the list. peggy bunker joins us with that

side of the story. >> good morning. these characters are straight out of a movie yet connections to local politicians those are very real. raymond chow and keith jackson are two on the list, allegedly linking senator leland yee to illegal activity. who are they. first is well connected san francisco political consultant keith jackson, an affidavit identifies jackson as involved in setting up an arms deal that involved senator yee, th th they'll he jackson's son has been arrested, tracked down yesterday in connecticut. raymond chow is known as shrimp boy a convicted criminal as of late living a double life, bragging about being a rehabilitated former gang member, even speaking to school children about giving up a life of crime. and then all while behind closed doors was living one.

his rap sheet dates to 1978 including racketeering charges, that allege attempted murder, murder for hire, gun trafficking and more. in his velvet suits and silk pockets he was intent on creating a celebrity image, the irony of creating a public image of a reformed criminal while being one behind closed doors is not lost on mayor ed lee. >> to hear someone get arrested when they really should be part of the rehabilitation process is disappointing. >> chow faces charges of money laundering and trafficking of stolen property and contraband. the fbi believes until chow's arrest yesterday the 54-year-old also played a crucial role in a sizable san francisco street gang, the hop sing gang. chow's arrest is a win for the fbi, they have been investigating him over two decades. >> thank you much, peggy. our team coverage of this developing story will continue all morning long.

you can get more on our website as well, nbcbayarea.com. at 5:05, new this morning one person had to be air lifted to the hospital to be treated for burns after flames ripped through an apartment complex in livermore this morning. 11 others were hurt but can go home. red cross helping them find new places to stay. two units were destroyed, several others damaged. >> i guess the fire started on the end over here but it shot across the roof because they redid it so there is tar and oil so. there's giant holes on the top units. that's one of mine. >> investigators say damage to the complex is estimated at around $100,000. >> san jose state university police investigating a deadly crash and an 89-year-old woman as hit and killed by a bicyclist on campus. bob, this crash happened while it was still dark. >> reporter: it did. good morning to you.

actually took place around the same time last thursday as it is right now. you can see as the police have pointed out to the "mercury news" this pathway is well lit. this is passeo, a bike and pedestrian path you can see a long way, it cuts through san jose state university. we're told that the bicyclist who collided with this woman did have her bike light on. it does not appear that this was necessarily a poorly lit situation. officers don't know why that this happened. what they know is that ching sung ye, an 89-year-old woman walking with her friend, another senior citizen, around 6:00 in the morning when this bicyclist in the opposite direction collided with her, knocking her on the ground. she hit her head so hard that she had to be taken to the hospital, she survived for a couple of days, then saturday she passed away. the bicyclist who is not a student here at san jose state, is cooperating with police. it will be up to the d.a.'s

office on whether or not to file charges in this case. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. at 5:07, president obama on his way to see italy's president after meeting pope francis for the first time. after being led through halls by swiss guards at the vatican, the president boud as he shook hands with the pontiff. mr. obama told the pope he is a great admirerer. the two exchanged gifts. we'll tell you about those when we get a live report in about 30 minutes. that's a tough one. what do you take the pope? >> for the man who wants nothing. >> yes. exactly. a man who bestows so much on so many. >> we've got a gift of our own, that is rain. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> what a troop. once we called the drought here in the bay area we brought it up to the extreme level, the rain showers started coming in. and consistently. so every single week so far we've had a little bit of rain

for the past four weeks. i can tell you right now today, it's going to be pretty good. a few light showers and then we get pounded as we head throughout saturday through wednesday. so we've got an active pattern that sticks with us and we need this rain so much. we need the snowpack. i don't think a lot of people are aware it's the snowpack that is more important because the snowpack continues to fill the reservoirs throughout the summer months especially in tahoe. we've got a lot of snowpack to add throughout the next few days. we picked up over a foot of powder yesterday above 7,000 feet. today we'll tack on additional foot likely by saturday, we could be up to about four feet, then by monday to tuesday we could be up to seven feet of powder in tahoe and that would really add to that really thick deficit we're running all the way for the past three years. right now live radar, light

showers on the way to dublin about 10, 15 minutes. today we'll see little flashes of rain. you want to keep your umbrella with you especially if you are wearing something nice to work. the heavy rain stays away until friday night at 10:00 p.m. we're talking about through friday night into saturday. this is the first round. we're going to get a more significant round as we head throughout monday into tuesday and wednesday of next week. and yeah, you see this, the orange embedded with the yellow and the green, that's heavy rainfall. in combination with the rain we're going to see wind. the saturated ground becomes more likely. we'll talk about more of the hazards that we are anticipating. a preview of what is to come throughout saturday. into monday. heavy rainfall for the bay area. and tahoe as well, it's a warmer system. here is monday. we're still talking about

for his political campaign in exchange for favors and trafficking firearms. he is out on bond this morning, but was told by a judge not to leave the state. >> the arrest making national headlines causing trouble for democrats at the capital. the senate president pro tem asked for yee's resignation. he is the third senator to face charges. last month senator ron calderon turned himself in after being indicted on bribery charges. in january senator ron wright was indicted. the search for victims entering the sixth day at the site after deadly mudslide in washington state. the hope of finding survivors has been replaced with the realization some families may not even have someone to bury. authorities say 90 people are confirmed missing, while 25 bodies have been found, nine have still yet to be recovered.

hopefully we'll pick up generous totals, yesterday over 2 inches, 66 degrees in the south bay. we'll hit 61 in san francisco, 65 degrees along the peninsula, a few stray showers from time to time. throughout remainder of the week we're going to see the same deal. a little bit of shower activity for friday, not a total washout. into saturday that heavy rain moves in. it's not just the north bay that's going to see the heavy rain. the entire bay area expecting to see the front come through. mostly between about saturday at 4:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. you can see that's when the heaviest moisture is expected. even throughout the second half of the day saturday we keep the rain going, and then we get into monday, tuesday, wednesday, that even stronger system, i'm going to show you that coming up. might blow your mind after we're expecting out of the deal starting on wednesday. first let's check your drive. good morning to mike inouye. could be kind of rough out there, a little aftermath. >> yeah. we're watching the damp roads and you talked about sprinkles through dublin. a look at the live camera, we

don't see it causing problems. you see a glow to the lights, moisture in the air. this is westbound, all of these headlights streaming, now in the same area we're looking at the volume starting to build. but not enough to cause slowing for west 580 through dublin. coming out of livermore you're fine. you notice the slowing eastbound toward an incident there, westbound 580 past north flynn, we have a stall in your second lane. that's close enough that arrives to get that out of the roadway. they are tracking the eastbound direction though it's light. you still see the slowing. and westbound slow out of the altamont pass. that's going to leave a break for folks closer to the dublin interchange. you're getting extra minutes to get on the road and head to the dublin interchange. here the south bay no problems, nothing unusual. no big delays san jose here, 101, 87, 85, 17, a smooth flow throughout construction zones heading to 880 and 17.

multi-billion-dollar industry. the men's basketball tournament averages $771 million per year in television rights that goes to schools, teams in key football championship games can receive millions. forbes reports stanford received $18 million for playing in the rose bowl. >> caltrans working on a fix, wi dig out concrete and level the road on highway 87. over the next couple of months. highway 87 opened back in 1993, less than a year later huge dips formed. costing around 25 million over ten years. it runs along the river which is prone to flooding. >> oakland moves forward with plans for a new baseball stadium.

welcome back. a live picture of l.a.x., several people arrested in southern california as part of a months long investigation into luggage thefts at the airport. police served more than two dozen search warrants, the people arrested are employees of a contracting company, not the airport itself. the investigation involved officers going under cover and working with those baggage handlers. >> the port of oakland moving forward with plans for a water front ballpark even though the a's say they are not interested. during the meeting this afternoon the board is expected to give the go ahead to a business group planning a 50-acre project which would include a stadium for the a's at howard terminal. a's owner lew wolff has said he doesn't like the plan, if they build it he will not come. but that is not stopped developers or the port commission from pushing forward.

rain. that's going to stick around. good morning everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. kri tina will be along with the forecast in a few minutes. first our top story, 26 people arrested including state senator leland yee following a massive fbi raid. yee is charged with gun trafficking and corruption and is out on bail. we have team coverage of this developing story. peggy bunker joins us with a look at some of the big names arrested but let's start with christie smith live in san francisco outside senator yee's house this morning. is it quiet there? >> reporter: it is except for the neighbors who have come out to roll out the trash cans and realize they have a block full of reporters outside the senator's house. you know, it's a stunning development. he had very little to say as he walked past reporters last night, a little to say about all of these charges against him including accepting money for political favors for his

campaign. also, for his involvement in promising fbi agents, one of the accusations, that he had connections to illegal weapons. the state senator looked tired as he returned home. after a long and trying day that started with his arrest, and then appearance in federal court in san francisco. while at least six locations were raided across the bay area tied to this investigation. yee who introduced anti-gun legislation is named in a 137-page affidavit on arms dealing charges and corruption. but his attorney says this is a complicated case. >> we will always, as in every case, enter not guilty pleas, and then the case takes on a life of its own with discovery being provided, motions being made. >> reporter: another raids included an office in china town of the chee kung tong

organization and the leader raymond chow the original target was also arrested and that led to a web that included yee in it who now faces potentially 125 years for this, seven charges at a total of $250,000 each, he is due in court on monday. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, christie. senator yee has a distinguished yet checkered past. he emigrated from china at 3 and started his public service career in 1988 when he was elected to the city's school board. in 1992 he was arrested for shoplifting a bottle of sun tan lotion in hawaii. in 1999 when he was on the board of supervisors he was stopped by police twice an suspicion he was cruising for prostitutes in the mission district. he claimed he was just driving home. after election to the state senate in 2006 he received hate mail and death threats for his

he kept going and eventually crashed into a pole down the road where he was taken into custody. the marine had just returned from afghanistan. >> an 89-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a bicyclist at san jose state university. bob redell is live where that deadly crash happened g. morning. >> reporter: happened here which cuts through san jose state university. good morning to you. it was about seven days ago, last thursday morning around this time, around 6:00 in the morning, and police aren't sure why this woman was hit by the bicycle fist you look around. it's fairly well lit. the woman did have a working headlight on the bicycle. the only issue could be the construction that's taking place on the left side here. maybe this was too narrow for both to get by. whatever happened this bicyclist did qulid the 89-year-old woman, ching sun ne walking with

another senior citizen thursday morning when this bicyclist hit her so hard that she fell to the ground, knocked her head so hard that she ended up having to be taken to the hospital where unfortunately she passed away on saturday. it's up to the district attorney's office whether or not there will be pressing charges against this bicyclist. this bicyclist, another woman, is not a student here at san jose state and is cooperating. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so sad. thank you very much, bob. >> let's get a check with our micro climb forecast and christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you. glad you're back with us, scott mcgrew. laura, you know what, we've been in this thing together, the rain started and we're going to stick with it as we head into all the way through wednesday next week. we need the rain as you know, ape is not one of the wettest months. fors us we could get back up to

average for this time of year with what we picked up over the past month and what's coming between now and wednesday, great news. temperatures right now mostly in the 40s and 50s, grab the jacket, pull out the umbrella or hoody that can protect you from the light showers. basically what you see here on the radar now, this is what we expect for today and tomorrow. light, nothing organized. that will return. highs today across the bay area slowing you the same thing. with less activity anticipated by this evening. we'll see the most moisture pass through. this comes our way throughout friday to saturday. 9:00 p.m. on friday through 9:00 a.m. on saturday, heavy rainfall up in the north bay. that's going to extend to the south bay by friday night. and to saturday afternoon. then through monday we get another fround of rain.

a preview of what we are anticipating. this is going to take a significant chip out of that deficit we're running. 6-plus inches on the way to santa rosa. 2-4 on the east shore and 4-6 even in the tri-valley and the delta looking good to take a nice, nice chip out of that deficit. we want to get more out of this. through mid april. i'm going to talk about the pattern. let's check the drive. >> that's great news is as far as the rain or the rain requirements but the roads, they will slow down. we'll track that. we did talk about rain across the peninsula. we don't see it on the live cam remarks just damp roads, 101, you would expect after the rains. a look at the maps we see that over the green. sunnyville, 280, damp roads. moving over to the big slowdown we have the lane cleared at north plin road. big backup out of the altamont

pope francis at the vatican taking place just a few hours ago. tracie potts live in washington, d.c. this morning with the reason behind that visit. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. certainly shifted the focus from the president's european tour from politics in ukraine and russia and crisis to this discussion with the pontiff. they entered the meeting alone with only their translators, sat down for about 50 minutes behind closed doors. we don't know what they talked about. we know the white house said the president wanted to talk about income inequality. the pope has been outspoken about helping the poor. they may have also talked about things like the affordable care act and the mandate to purchase birth control an area where they disagree. but we know that after nearly an hour they came out more cordial, smiles and hand shakes and a gift exchange. the president gave the pope a

stop because of bad weather. >> national weather service will be in the sacramento area today to inspect damage from a small tornado. this is actual video of the category ef-0 twister yesterday. look at the rainbow peeking through. a spokeswoman says at least 12 homes had roof damage, two hit by debris and six had fence damage. >> you know tornados are powerful when the zero tornado is a scary one. they go to five. >> yeah. typically in california we see maybe up to a 1 if anything. i can tell you when you're talking about homes enduring damage from a tornado in california that is a highly unusual scenario. i want to show you exactly what they were working with yesterday. these are all of the storm reports we had in the sacramento valley. you'll see that just next to brentwood we had a report of a funnel cloud.

no tornadic formation. no tornado touched down in the bay area but that's close. and hey, up in chico we had one near i-5. you don't want to let your guard down. we told you the thunderstorms were likely. we're going to bring that chance for thunderstorms back as we head into this weekend on saturday, i'm likely working on saturday just because the chance is there and i want to make sure everybody is safe. anything happens we would break in. east bay at 56, 46 in the north bay. a chilly start to the day. relatively cool but not tar from our average. ics 6 is about average. a few showers, keep your umbrella with you. we'll keep the showers in the mix today and tomorrow. nothing organized anticipated. until we hit friday night into saturday. 66 in the tri-valley, 62 is the

high in the east bay. 64 degrees not a bad day, rain at times in the north bay. tahoe, they have one foot of powder above 7,000 feet with additional potentially five to six feet more. so taking you into friday, spotty activity, then boom, it comes in friday night into saturday. heavy downpours for about 12 hours. over the 12 hours as we head through about 11:00 p.m. on friday to 11:00 a.m. on saturday, we could accumulate over two inches of rain right here in the south bay. we're going to talk more about what we expect in tahoe. to our planning to hit that fresh powder. right now let's check your drive. >> good morning. hey, i just spotted flashing lights across the san mateo bridge westbound, and we're slowing so let that ambulance

backup. no metering lights. >> thanks so much. it's 5:50. several people arrested overnight in southern california as part of a month-long investigation into luggage theft at l.a.x., police serve more than two dozen search warrants. the people arrested are employees of contracting companies, not the airport itself. the investigation involved officers going under cover and working among the baggage handlers. >> we're hearing from the houston construction worker trapped on a burning building and from the brave firefighters as well who saved his life. the rescue was captured in dramatic home video. he suffered only slight burns when this apartment complex caught fire. you see he got stuck on an upper balcony, jumped just in time. firefighters rescued him moments before a wall collapsed. >> i was running away from the
