a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. new this morning, an historic meeting at the vatican, president obama visited pope francis hours ago. the president bowed as he shook hands with the pontiff. the two sat down at a wooden table in the library. the president called himself a great admirer of the pope. the two could talk privately. it's unclear what that entailed of course but vatican officials say pope francis likely would share his views on obama's health care law and its contraception coverage mandate. we'll go in depth on the president's visit coming up in a live report. >> this morning state senator yee back home facing a possible prison sentence of more than 100 years, after his arrest on arms trafficking and corruption charges. the prominent democrat arrested

along side mob boss raymond "shrimp boy" chow and keith jackson. it's shocking and a complex indictment. the legal saga is just beginning. we have team coverage on this developing story. peggy bunk wer new details about chow and jackson. let's start with christie smith live outside of yee's home. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. state senator leland yee is waking up at his home in the sunset district this morning, what he's going to find there are a row of news reporters here waiting for him. last night he kim home and didn't have much to say about his mountain of legal troubles including all of the accusations against him, one that he accepted money for political favors, also other accusations of speaking with undercover fbi agents that he had access to illegal weapons from around the world. he actually looked tired as he came back home with his

attorney. the state senator had a long list of federal charges filed against him. he appeared in court yesterday as raids went on at several bay area locations including his home here in the sunset district. yee who introduced anti-gun legislation is accused that he had weapons contacts around the world. his neighbors are stunned. >> very shocking like you know, i don't expect politicians to act this way. >> i think there's way too much money in politics and we need to get people away from the money and focus more on helping people. >> reporter: now, the affidavit names a number of other defendants including a guy named raymond "shrimp boy" chow the leerd of the chee kung tong organization. the fbi did raid their offices yesterday.

and the investigation did focus on chow in the first place but then a link was made to yee. he faces 120 years possibly for six charges, then five more years for the gun trafficking charge if convicted. seven charges at $250,000, the fine, for each of those. he is due back in court on monday. >> reporting live in san francisco, christie smith. >> probably going to be a long weekend for him. more on those other two men arrested. one a gangster, the other a well known political consultant with connections at the state capitol. peggy joins us. tell us more about these men. >> the connections, that's what's alarming t charges against senator yee are shocking especially when you consider he was outspoken in the senate about these very issues, gun control and transparent government. with that in mind it's equally shocking to learn who the fbi says yee was associating with.

criminal gun runners and alleged political scammers. arrested yesterday is the china town gangster raymond chow who liked to out the as a reformed criminal intent on helping kids. he was arrested on charges of money laundering and trafficking of stolen property. in his suits and ties the fbi says he was living a double life, being photographed with lieutenant governor newsom, also 49er vernon davis, all sorts of people that he was connecting himself with while leading a life of crime. mayor ed lee says she shocked at the affiliation with senator yee. >> to hear someone get arrested when they really should be part of the rehabilitation process is disappointing. >> he was talking about chow. the fbi also allegations that keith jackson was the link between senator yee and chow. he was arrested in yesterday's

raid as well accused of being involved in a murder-for-hire scheme and also gun trafficking conspiracies. jackson is a former member of the san francisco board of education be, his son was arrested on charges in the state of connecticut. most recently jackson was lists on the website in the business of providing public relations and crisis consulting. as of this morning no mention of jackson on the singer website. it's not clear how long ago he worked for the firm. his profile has been removed. the irony of his role there and current situation certainly not lost on anyone. back to you. >> strange story. thank you. >> we of course we'll have continuing coverage including a look at lawmakers on capitol hill who are sounding off about yee's arrest. we'll tell you who is calling on yee to resign immediately and how the arrest impacts the california democratic party. it's coming up in about half an hour. >> our extensive coverage continues on hein where you can find exclusive video of yee's

yesterday, we got warm and that created instability. we had tornadic rotation in the central valley. even reports of a funnel cloud here brentwood. right now dwight contrary, nice and calm. we have a few light spotty showers out there. we've got another potent storm system on the way to the bay area. it's marching towards us as we speak. it's going to bring heavy rain through the bay area as we head throughout friday into saturday. you can see very spotty isolated activity, nothing organized. that's going to be the case. we stop the clock, take through the afternoon. in santa rosa, sonoma count tee marin county we'll see the moisture for today. nothing heavy like i said just flashes of green until we get into your friday night. we're so close to that weekend now. 66 degrees in the south bay, 65 degrees on the peninsula, and san francisco at 61 degrees, on and off activity. i think if you live north of the golden gate bridge or in the city keep that umbrella by your

side. 62 in the east bay, north bay 64, rain at times, all this rain means our hillsides stay green. as we head throughout the next couple days we've got two rounds of heavy rain. let's check your drive. still a little wet. >> yeah. watch those off ramps. it might still be slick around the bay. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza where you have to slow down because of all of the folks around you. the metering lights are on. pretty standard for a thursday. and no problems, just a gradual build out of the maze and off of the berkeley curve. we look at the map, our sensors show a smooth flow toward treasure island off of the incline. eban earlier -- slowing out of the city. the east shore freeway speeds come down through richmond, approaching golden gate field.

the rest of the bay north of san mateo bridge, 92, we have a smooth flow for the peninsula and the east bay, 880 and 101 the major routes this time of day. an easy drive for the south bay, the northbound routes start the slowing, the second for 101 from 680 to 880 and 87 into downtown. the top left you see cupertino. a green patch, wet roads because we had sprinkles there as well as los altos. we'll look at palo alto, 101, signs of water on the road, just damp, all the way from here, off the san mateo bridge into the city. this is from the westbound direction, earlier flashing lights a concern. no incidents on the peninsula so we have a clear flow for 92. >> good deal. thanks, mike. still ahead on "today in the bay," the airport strike that prompted one airline to cancel flights. >> a woman dies a week after being run over by a bicyclist.

>> firefighters popping up in livermore after flames ripped through an apartment complex. one person air lifted to the hospital with serious burns and the red cross now helping 11 others forced from their homes. it happened about 1:00 this morning not far from granada high school. >> state senator leland yee is due back in court monday to answer to corruption and weapons charges. he returned to his san francisco home last night after posting $500,000 bail. the feds say yee was arranging illegal weapons deals and taking money in exchange for legislative promises. >> happening now hundreds of flights grounded as airport worker goes on strike in germany. this is video taken at the airport in frankfurt but employees are walking out at other hubs. they grounded 600 flights because of the strike including flights at sfo. trade unions want a raise for airport workers, the german government says it's open to a

raise but unions demands are too high. >> several people arrested in southern california as part after month long investigation into luggage thefts at l.a.x., we have new video taken showing police serving more than two dozen search warrants. the people arrested are employees of contracting companies, not the airport itself. the investigation involved officers going under cover working among the baggage handlers. >> 6:15. san jose state university police investigating a deadly crash between an 89-year-old woman and bicyclist. it happened on the pathway for both pedestrians and bicyclists. bob redell live at the university where the collision happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. i spoke with someone who works here at san jose state. they tell me they were very familiar with this woman, that she was a regular walker, morning walker on this part of campus. last thursday morning around this time was supposed to be no different. it was seven days ago and chung

soon ne, 89-year-old woman and her friend walking down this bike and pedestrian path. it cuts through campus, when an oncoming bicyclist collided about her. police tell us over here to the right is where she was hit and knocked down. this happened in front of the student housing building. she hit her head, had to be taken to the hospital. police are trying to figure out why this happened. you can see this area is well lit even though it's dark out, the bike did have a working headlight. and this what you are looking at this green barrier was not here last thursday. this was grass so. there was space to move out on the side of the path but not so much on this side here where she was hit. you can see there is a construct barrier. that worker i mentioned earlier tells us that he has stopped bicycling through the area because he believes the construction barrier made this path too narrow and dangerous.

>> hey, good morning to you. we were talking about tahoe and yeah, you know what, a lot of people have the same idea. they want to get out there. >> the traffic on 80. >> don't go till laura gets there. >> you want to postpone that. friday's going to be the safest day to get up there because we have a major round of snow coming in as we head into the weekend. we picked up whopping totals upwards of a foot above 7,000 feet. colleen moore joins us from squaw valley. colleen, how much snow did you guys get, and i know spring break is happening for a lot of kids, a lot of people are going to head up there. what do you have going on with all of that fresh powder? >> yeah, we got a lot of skiing and snowboarding going on this weekend and fresh snow. the past 24 hours we picked up 13 inches at squaw and we got nine inches and it's still snowing so looks like it's going to be a great weekend with fresh

snow. >> yeah, and a lot more on the way. not just on saturday, we have a lot more on monday into tuesday as well. wait until i show you futurecast. these are the temperatures. it's going to be pretty mild for tahoe, 46 degrees for today, 40 for saturday and then sunday late sunday is when we expect the next round of snowfall. and squaw is going to have choice conditions especially on the upper mountain going to be really nice. we had to wait until late in the season. better late than never, mother nature. throughout the day we're going to keep showers in the forecast as well. i want to show you she told you that it's snowing now, you can see that. that's the case for today. tomorrow is the safest to get up to the sierra nevada if you don't want to be driving through the snowfall. do bring those chains with you. travel cautiously. wind gusts are a factor. 40 to 60 miles per hour. and just until saturday we could accumulate an additional three feet of snow with more on the way monday into tuesday.

that's really good news. we're making up some of the totals that we're lacking. temperatures mild as well. 66 degrees, scattered showers in the south bay, 65 for the peninsula and 61 with on and off activity. in san francisco we expect the most moisture to pass to the north, about 64 degrees there, occasional showers in the east bay and highs in the mid-60s so take you into this weekend and show you what we're talking about. so friday at 2:00 p.m. north of sonoma county. here's what we expect 9:00 friday until 9:00 a.m. saturday heavy rain through the north bay, potentially six inches of rainfall over the course of that twelve-hour period. throughout 4:00 p.m. on saturday we start to get action in the south bay and we could get two inches of rain. then look what happens through monday into tuesday, the atmospheric river comes back and we could be talking about showers all the way through thursday, at least of next week. potentially beyond. we need the rain it's a good

thing. >> we're looking at the traffic right now, northbound w the build here this is 101 northbound off the 680 and 280. we'll look at the maps and show you it's not dramatic. just slowing there as you would expect. standard for a thursday. we had rain earlier, cupertino area, that stretch of 280 registers with damp roads on our road weather index. a nice smooth flow of traffic. there is a good slowdown starting in livermore west into the dublin interchange. nothing unexpected there. we had a burst of traffic after an earlier stall and held things up. that burst created a cluster going on south of pleasanton. that will smooth itself out but stick around for the morning commute down into sunol and the south bay or 680. a couple issues off of the dumbarton bridge. we had a crash that movered to the shoulder quickly, no slowing there. the southbound side approaching

indeed when he shook the pope's hand. we saw him enter, we saw them greet each other. they are cordial, they sat down with translators and then the doors closed and everyone including the media and secretary of state john kerry and the ambassador rice were on the outside while this was happening. we don't know what they talked about. we await more detailed readout from the white house characterizing what the conversation was like. what we do know is when they came out they continued to remain cordial. even exchanged gifts. president obama gave to the pope a seed chest made out of wood and leather. in it fruit and vegetable seeds from the white house garden. probably an influence from the first lady. it was inscribed with the date, the fact it was given from the president and along with that we understand there's going to be a delivery of seeds to the vatican so they can grow tons of fruits and vegetables to give away to a

charity of the pope's choice. >> the pope gave him a plaque in exchange? >> reporter: we saw the plaque come from the pope. so it was sort after cordial exchange at the end. you know, you brought up the fact there are some issues that they agree on, like income inequality, and then there are issues like birth control where they disagree and we don't know to what degree that was a part of this meeting. >> very interesting. good to see. thanks so much, tracie. >> the fbi investigating numerous fema employees after agents found what they call unusual changes in flood insurance maps that benefit high end condo buildings, one on the peninsula. the investigation comes after an nbc report showed more than 500 cases in which fema redrew map lines and changed the flood zone to exclude some waterfront properties. that saved the owners as much as 97% on insurance premiums.

one of those properties is in burlingame a few miles from sfo. fema oversees the flood insurance program. officials declining to comment. >> christine has a lot to say about the forecast. we're getting a little break in the rain for today but more on the way. >> more on the way as you know we're in the drought so this could not be better news. we have a lot of rain on the way this weekend. for today light spotty activity. bring your umbrella. then you can give them a break for most of the day. even as we head throughout the afternoon into the evening hours we're not going to see a lot of moisture. not until we hit tomorrow night. 50 degrees along the peninsula, 48 in the north bay, 55 in san francisco. temperatures are chilly to start. we're not going to climb that much. we'll see a little sunshine out there so you want to make outdoor plans today is a good day, also for the first part of tomorrow, then between tomorrow and wednesday we're anticipating heavy duty totals when it comes

to the rain in the north bay. 6-plus inches. this is the valley floor in napa. we'll see crazy totals i do believe in the higher elevations maybe to the tune of eight inches between friday and wednesday as we keep that atmospheric river going. 1 to 2 inches in the south bay. we don't get as much rain down here. still, that will add to our reservoirs that need that rain. and also our hillsides are so so pretty now, mike. nice and green. really pretty even when you're stuck in it. >> the drive is nice, the scenery doesn't change because you're not moving. here the traffic is moving better so you know why i told you, sticking around you missed the backup. nobody 880 you see the flashing lights t scales on the right. and on the left the edge of the screen you see the flashing sign for the fremont auto mall so you know where you are heading north toward that off ramp. you see that all lanes are

clear. the map will show you we're seeing the slowdown. the traffic break happens so quick wasn't enough chance to show a problem. southbound side it's the volume. another set of light there is, north from stevenson, then another issue north of there just past the dumbarton bridge. no real slowing for northbound because that is countercommute. the southbound side shows slowing because of that volume of traffic down into fremont. the rest of your bay looking pretty standard. 101 shows slowing, same thing for 87 into downtown. livermore has slowing for the tri-valley. we'll look at palo alto where we have a nice flow. you're getting more company but you still are at speed for the bay shore freeway and 280 between the city and the south bay. >> thanks. i know you've been watching this. a san jose highway sinking again. caltrans working on a fix according to the "mercury news," caltrans will dig out concrete and level the road on 87 over

the next couple months. highway 87 opened back in 1993, less than a year later huge dips formed, costing around $25 million over 10 years to repair. the highway runs along the guadeloupe river which is prone to flooding. >> one of the most treacherous highways now reopening today the scenic park. the devil's slide coastal trail will open to the public. the area hug the san mateo coast between pacifica and half moon bay, and used to be incredibly dangerous, a tough stretch of road. but it's remade into a scenic trail. the county spent a year adding faux rock walls and a pair of parking lots on either end of the park. >> not sure i would have a picnic there. a new report due out. a traffic scandal involving chris christie's opponent.

and the giants taking a live look at the a's coliseum out there today. they are all back home, they are going to start the bay bridge series but it's over at at&t park, 7:00 tonight, here on nbc bay area. >> today findings will be released about the new jersey traffic scandal. some democrats call the report a sham, that's because it's being released by a lawyer hired by republican governor chris christie. the report is expected to clear christie of any involvement in the plot to block traffic in ft. lee t town at the base of the george washington bridge. the plot was apparently intended to punish the mayor of that town who did not endorse christie for re-election. >> residents in boston mourning two firefighters who died in a vicious fire and trapped them in the basement. a group stood in a row in silent tribute outside the station where ed walsh and michael kennedy worked. we have pictures of the fallen

89-year-old was out with her friend when she was hit by a bicyclist in the opposite direction. the impact knocked her down. she hit her head so hard, she died on saturday. >> i saw her and her friend walking across the street, and yeah, it's kind of sad. i didn't say anything, maybe just a smile here and there but you know, because i didn't know them. but they were just -- you -- when you see somebody so often, you know, you don't -- and even if you don't say anything you like that's normalcy and now it's like you know, it's kind of sad to see that, i probably -- i'll probably not even see her friend any more. kind of bad. >> reporter: police are trying to find out why this happened. she was hit right here, knocked on the ground in front of the associated housing building.

wash your car and if you missed out on the free car wash yesterday, the good news is we're going to get two more great dousings of rain in the bay area. i'm going to time that out for you. what's happening right here right now. san jose a pretty start, we're getting the pinks, the reds, you can see the sky opened up. we have sunshine yesterday but it was the sun that stirred up the instability and that's where we have the strong thunderstorms firing off especially in the sacramento valley. there was reports of a funnel cloud just to the east of brentwood. we head throughout the next couple days we're going to keep the chance going. it will be slight. saturday that's the day you want to keep in mind when we are expecting severe weather. heavy rainfall, potential for local flooding and maybe a few thunderstorms. that could be strong. a few isolated showers. not a lot of action right now. do keep in mind we had rain yesterday, some places picked up over an inch in the north bay. about a half inch in the south

bay. it's going to take a while to drive out. you might find areas where it's slick out there so take it easy. 64 degrees, east bay at 62. around 66 degrees, the tri-valley, and that's where we're not expecting a lot of rain today. then we bring it back late friday night into saturday. you can see there thunderstorms as well as the rain on saturday. then sunday is a great day for outdoor plans in the bay area. as we head throughout monday the rain returns. so let me show you what we expect. we stop the clock between 9:00 p.m. on friday, you can see all of the yellows and oranges, reds coming into the bay area. sonoma county. 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. saturday. heavy rain in the north bay. that moves by about 4:00 p.m. on saturday. we're talking about potentially accumulating couple inches here in san jose. and take a look at that. here is monday at 3:00 p.m., more heavy rain in the forecast. this is a good thing. it's going to come in at once.

let's check your drive. see if you're ready for that. >> the traffic like that rain kind of all comes in at once. everybody decides to leave at the same time. northbound 101 north of 680, kind of merge and cluster now as the south bay. we look at the map and that's not unusual. this is a typical pattern we see north of 680. also slowing right around capital expressway. north 87 and 85 showing your build. in the last minutes north of 17 northbound 85 shows a great deal of slowing. something is going on there. or maybe it's a crew that's moving from the scene. i'll let you know if that sticks around. northbound 17 slow up out of the santa cruz mountains to submit road. folks aren't going to get any novato but the truck is stuck getting over there. the southbound side down to

santa cruz moving with that distraction. toward the fremont area northbound side had a series of three crashes all moved quickly to the shoulder so they are no longer a problem. it's the southbound side that shows traditional build because of that volume. no problems for the dumbarton or the san mateo bridge. to the east we see a slowdown as well as 680 out of pleasanton and livermore. there is a crash around stanley so additional surface street traffic. westbound 580 moves, a little extra slowing. doesn't look like a major issue. the san mateo and dumbarton move smoothly. the peninsula moves smoothly as well. we'll show you the coliseum, an easy flow to the bay bridge toll plaza with metering lights. and the peninsula with a live look for palo alto where you have a pleasant drive. the roads are drying out and some off ramps so be careful coming off freeway speeds. >> new this morning a historic

meeting at the vatican as president obama visited pope francis for the first time. president obama bowed as he shook hands with the pontiff before the two sat down at a wooden table in the papal library. the president calls himself a great admirer of the pope. cameras were out of the room so the two could talk. it's unclear what the conversation entailed but officials say pope francis would likely share his views on obama's health care law and contraception coverage mandate. >> searchers looking for victims of saturday's mud slide in washington admitting they may not be able to recover all the bodies they find. the mud slide which took out much of the town of oso, washington, has turned a mile-long patch of land into a moon-like landscape. the smud thick, thicky, 30 to 40 feet deep in places and that makes recoveries impractical and dangerous. 16 people have been confirmed killed.

the crews found nine more bodies but not been able to get them out of the mud. they may stay there. 90 people are still missing. >> new images from a thai satellite show objects around 300 actually, floating in the indian ocean near missing malaysia flight 370's suspected crash site. the objects are of various sizes, spotted about 1600 miles from perth, australia. the images were taken on monday but took two days to process them. the objects were about 125 miles from where a french satellite spotted 122 objects earlier this week. planes and ships searched for only a couple of hours today and then stopped because of bad weather. >> this morning state senator leland yee is back home facing a possible prison sentence of more than 100 years. after his arrest on arms trafficking and corruption. the prominent democrat elected

along side raymond chow and keith jackson. this is a shocking and complex indictment and the legal saga is just beginning. team coverage on the developing story. peggy bunker is in the studio with details about chow and jackson. let's start with christie smith live outside yee's home. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. as state senator yee does step out there are a row of reporters out here waiting for him. and of course he has a mountain of legal troubles ahead. he is accused of accepting cash but also accused of talking about undercover fbi agents about ties he had to drug runners all across the world. last night returning home yee appeared somewhat tired after a jaw dropping day, arrested, then a federal court appearance.

137-page affidavit, raids of more than a half dozen locations around the bay area and beyond, from a politician who championed trying to outlaw violent video games and introducedant gun violence legislation. his attorney says this is going to be a long and complicated case. >> we will always, as in every case, enter not guilty pleas, and then the case takes on a life of its on. >> reporter: one of the locations raided was the chee kung tong organization in san francisco china town. what they were doing, initially looking for the leader of that, 54-year-old raymond chow, i think peggy is going to talk more about that later. but that investigation led to a web that was then tied to the state center who faces six

behavior is not a reflection what if other senators do. senator yee has been stripped of his committee chairmanship and assignments. >> the other men arrested, swoon a notorious gangster, the other a well known political consultant with deep connections at the state capital. peggy joins us live in the studio. >> that's the shocking part about this, this huge bust so outrageous is senator yee was being investigated which the fbi for the very things he seemed to stand for in the senate. gun control. who the fbi says he was associating with. one familiar face that was arrested in yesterday's raid former president of the san francisco board of education, keith jackson, jackson is described by the fbi as a close associate of senator yee and a

fund-raiser. the two attempted the raise money by taking money for political favors and also conspurring to trade for cash. jackson is the person who connected senator yee to this man, raymond chow, a convicted criminal who as of late was giving a -- being a former gang member all the while living a life of crime. his rap sheet dates back to 1978. he was intent on creating a celebrity image. he is now facing charges of money laundering. these associations with senator yee has mayor lee in shock. >> when they do raids and enforcements they don't warn about what it is. >> the relationships that tied chow and jackson to the senator were discovered by fbi agents
