together. we've got a lot of rain in your forecast for the weekend. nonetheless we're going to help you get outdoors without having to dodge showers, make those plans. it's going to be a pretty intense weekend weather wise. your full forecast in moments. >> the good news now, 5:00, not so intense through palo alto. the commute looking good. but we'll see how things are shaping up. >> looking good at the bay bridge. lights glistening. it's friday. march 28th. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are following breaking news for you this morning right now investigators trying to piece together what happened to a person found dead in a home in san jose. police say last night they were conducting a wonderful check at a home not far from silver creek high school. when no one answered the door they entered. they found a body inside.

right now all detectives are telling us is they are treating the death as suspicious until they can prove otherwise and homicide investigators were at the scene overnight. the person's identity and how he or she died has not been released. we continue to follow a developing story, some of the men arrested in an fbi operation expected to appear in court today. among them raymond "shrimp boy" chow still in jail after a judge denied him bail and declared him a flight risk and danger to the public. he is accused of money laundering and other charges, also possibly in court keith jackson a political consultant and former san francisco school board member, he is accused in taking part in a murder-for-hire conspiracy as well as gun and drug trafficking. the big name in this fbi operation senator leland yee faces other judgment on the senate floor.

christie smith live in stack sack. lawmakers expected to ask for his resignation. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, scott. that's right. and u.s. senators boxer and feinstein are now joining the chorus of lawmakers in sacramento that are demanding that state senator leland yee go ahead and step down, resign from his post. now in a couple hours there is going to be a vote this morning on the senate floor. what they are going to be doing is asking that he resign, if not, the president of the senate says that they are going to go ahead and vote to suspend him. shortly after yee's arrest colleagues moved to remove him from all committee positions here in sacramento. senator yee facing a number of serious, stunning federal charges ranging from bribery to weapons trafficking. wednesday morning there were a series of raids across the bay area, even here in sacramento. yee's attorney, though, says that he would be pleading not

guilty and he shared that yee wrote a letter, dropping out of the race for secretary of state. >> this was a very personal decision on the part of the senator, this is what he wanted to do in relation to that election for office. give at any circumstances of the federal case. >> reporter: when asked if senator yee would resign from the state senate, his attorney offered a no comment response yesterday. and yee has yet to comment. there have been media looking out, staking out his home but it has remained quiet. if he is suspended, state senator mark leno said that yee would not be on the senate floor again. these proceedings start at 9:00 this morning and we will be there. reporting live in sacramento, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. stay with nbc bay area for

continuing coverage of this story. any time we're not on air find the latest on our website nbcbayarea.com. >> it's 5:03. a former bay area principal accused of selling drugs will be in court today. investigators say they found methamphetamine and weighing scales in the san francisco home of eric lewis in 2012. the one-time principal of montague elementary in santa clara was arrested at a caltrains station after he reportedly tried to sell drugs to an undercover officer. investigators say lewis met the officer on a dating website. >> livermore police asking for your help finding a man they say robbed a woman with an -- at an atm. he had a baseball bat. images released show the man running across the parking lot toward the woman late wednesday night. he comes up to her holding that bat in the hand. demanding money, he steals her phone, the victim says he took off in a red sedan. >> two significant updates, the

search for the missing airlines flight. the search area is changing yet again. and a plane has reported by spotted objects in the revised search zone. peggy bunker joins us with the latest. >> good morning. big changes in the search for flight 370. analysis of radar data has revealed that the plane was traveling faster than originally thought. this means that the plane likely went down much closer to the coast of australia than the original search area. so let's look at this map here. you can see the highlighted difference here. they were originally looking toward the bottom of your screen. now 600 to 700 miles north and east there off the coast of perth is where the new search parameters are. both planes, they are moving about 700 miles north of that search, right now we're hearing that a plane from new zealand has spotted possible debris. there are six ships on the way

all due to these revelations that the plane was going faster. that means they were using the fuel quicker than previously thought. >> the continuing analysis kates the plane was traveling faster than estimated results in increased fuel use and reducing the possible distance it traveled south into the indian ocean. >> the entire world is watching this rescue frustrated to see satellite pictures like this. when searchers get to that location nothing is found. this will hopefully be the key that unlooks and the 240 people on board that plane. weather has been the other element that complicated this search. many times the planes and boats have to turn back because of rough seas and time is running out. the black boxes only send out the low cater ping for another eight days so time of the es

saturday. heavy periods of rain rolling through the north bay. you can see how this extends, organized out here to the eastern pacific. that's our friend the atmospheric river. there is what produces 1 to 2 inches of rain as opposed to 3/4 we get from a storm system without that tap. as we head throughout the next couple days we keep that tap flowing into the bay area. saturday at 9:00 a.m., san jose is going to get that heavy rain. look at this. talking 5, maybe 6, 7 hours of heavy rain all the way through about 2:00, 3:00, we keep the yellow on the map. today is a good travel day. just light scattered showers. drizzle at the coast. i want to see if that's impacting your drive. we'll bring in our highway man, happier on a friday. i know i am, mike. >> i'm doing well. better in a few more hours once i change into my sweats.

san mateo bridge which moves nicely no problems. we expect a lighter flow. our map shows gren. cars hitting the road. slower out of the altamont pass. approaching the bay bridge, an easy drive for west 24 and 80 all the way off of the carquinez bridge. north 680 shows slowing from ala mow around stone valley road. that crash blocking one or two lanes. minor injuries a. slower drive, a few miles, up to the walnut creek interchange. we'll keep that in mind. unusual for today. slowing out of the altamont pass. close to the speed limit through the dublin interchange. oakland no problems for the nimitz freeway. >> thanks, mike. the battle over a south bay

withdrawing from iraq and afghanistan. >> the family of reeva steenkamp will have to wait to hear from her accused killer. the trial of oscar pistorius has been postponed until april 7. pistorius was supposed to take the stand today, in the first day of the defense presenting its case. the judge said one of her two legal experts who are helping her with the case is sick, so the trial had to be delayed. >> investigators think thousands of items were swiped from checked bags at one of the largest airports, they are still trying to figure out how long a theft ring involving baggage handers at l.a.x. went on. they suspect it lasted months. six were arrested monday but police think as many as 25 were involved. they all worked for independent contractors. the workers rifled through bags stuffing valuables in their pockets. investigators say the baggage

it will be pretty comfortable for gardening or anything you want to do before the rain hits tomorrow. as we head through tonight it gets going up in the north bay, then we are expecting heavy downpours here in the south bay, at this time tomorrow morning. 64 degrees in san francisco. look at these 70s, nice comfortable conditions for the south bay and the east bay. as we head throughout the weekend this is what we expect. it's going to be cold and rainy, sunday we're going to have that beautiful air quality. it's going to be a nice day to get outdoors before we get another round ever rain into monday and tuesday. that's a system i want to focus on, but for right now get to you work in a timely fashion. >> this is how my luck goes with live cameras. we have them around the bay in face we want to spot something like this crash but it's usually behind an obstacle.

you get off of the freeway and it splits there is a triangle that you submit off. that is the core point named for a sewing term. we'll show you that area on the map and the rest of the south bay. we have construction crews that continue to clear over the next half hour over the southbound 880 toward bascom and stevens creek boulevard. the rest, usual suspects, taking down one lane, two at the most coming into cupertino. a smooth flow, both sides 880 and 101 don't have a problem along the coast. talking about a steady chrisle. like pacifica. half moon bay. we have slowing westbound out of the altamont pass, then things smooth out toward livermore, west 580 and by the time you hit airway and isabelle you're at

speed. we'll give you a live look. look at all of the space and still at the limit. the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a crew eastbound with the bright lights. back to you. >> we've got new drama in the race for south bay congressional seat. a superior court judge has kicked one of the candidates out of the race. in the meantime another has been cleared of accusations he stacked the race in his favor. earlier this week a republican official filed suit saying roy cano recruited two republicans for the seat. the suit claims he did to the split the republican vote and increase his chances of winning. the judge asked them to remove both candidates from the ballot. the judge disqualified candidate

citing issues with his petition. republican joe vanlandingham will be allowed to continue. the judge found no wrong doing. >> police are investigating after a $24,000 shipment of wine disappeared. mountain view voice reports the owner backed it up. someone claiming to be the delivery driver and the wayne never arrived. police have not released any sort of description. warning people to be on the alert for a possible scam artist. a man flagged down a big rig telling the driver his truck was smoking. when the driver went to check then begin suspect stole his cell phone and ran. a similar scam may be for other drivers. >> slated to go to camp this summer, despite damage caused by the rim fire, the 90-year-d

5:23. taking you to paris because there's an american woman that is looking to put a stop to a popular tradition. lisa taylor launched a campaign to try to ban the love locks on bridges spanning the saine. it's supposed to be a public show of undying love but she's worried they are a threat to safety. >> so we did math and that would mean that it's covered with 93 metric tons of metal. and that is about the equivalent of three large trucks parked on the bridge at all times. i have a hard time believing that this bridge which is a pedestrian bridge, not made of stone, that it was built to withstand that constant pressure and weight. >> a lot of amount there. she says the locks take away

on the senate floor. christie smith is live in sacramento where lawmakers expected to ask for his resignation. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, scott. senator leland yee announced yesterday he would drop out of the race for secretary of state, but when we asked his attorney would he be willing to give up his seat altogether, we got a "no comment at this time." his colleagues are pushing back very hard today. what they are doing already is that they removed him from all committee positions, that was within hours of his arrest wednesday on serious federal charges ranging from bribery to weapons trafficking. yee appeared in federal court after a series of raids at his home and a half dozen other locations. senator mark leno said every indictment, arraignment, reflects poorly on the

after he was hired while being investigated. now all new hires have to go through fingerprint and background check. >> a plane searching for wreckage of the malaysian jet has found objects in a if you search zone. why we have to wait until tomorrow to find out if those belong to the missing plane. >> that is true. about an hour ago we got heard that a new zealand p-3 plane spotted dwot largest number of objects seen by any plane, this person just returned to berth australia, very encouraging after the search wear as changed to 700 miles from the previous search zone. analysis of radar data reveals overnight that the plane was traveling much faster than thought. you see at the bottom where it's labeled as possible wreckage.

welcome back. happy friday to you. 5:41. the obama administration extended the deadline to sign up for obamacare. but that will not matter for california. you have until just monday at midnight to enroll. there is little leeway. while you have until monday to start the application you don't have to finish it until april 15. all this back and forth with the health care plan has politicians in washington upset. tracie potts live on capitol hill this morning with that side of the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. like john boehner republican leader who says hey, the president can't single-handedly

change the dates on this. washington isn't calling it an extension, the white house i should say isn't calling it an extension, they call it more like a grace period the way they described it if you're in line when it's time to vote and the polls close you still get to vote. people in line electronically and have signed up for health care but haven't fully been able to process that, or they called in and the whole thing hasn't gone through, by monday still won't get the tax penalty. the penalty is $95 or 1% of your income which depending on your income could add up to be over $95. the other thing, yes, they hit the mark. the 6 million which was the lower revised mark of how many people they want to sign up by this deadline. however, the chunk of the 6 million that are young, healthy americans not quite as much as they wanted. they were going for 38%. right now they are at about a quarter so that's why there is this push over the weekend to try to get more people

especially young healthy people to sign up. >> exactly. young healthy ones help pay for it. >> to a developing story, officials in washington say the number of people confirmed dead in that mudslide will probably go up today. as of now the official count is 16, with about 90 missing. today search and rescue crews are fighting through rain and exhaustion on the seventh day of searching. they are using forensic digging techniques t machine picks up debris, sets it off to the side, people go through the pile. when done they do it all over again. the owner of the stump bar and grill in town says not everyone can get out and search but everyone can do something. they are selecting money for victims. >> a lot of them are regulars. one of them was a really close family to us, and we just want to help. >> for the third time this week silicon valley chapter of the american red cross is sending more volunteers to support

survivors. >> 5:43. an end of an era coming to san jose. >> the winchester dome theaters closing down. bob is there. bob, some of the movie fans hoping this won't be the absolute last screening ever. >> reporter: as it stands scott and laura, sunday's screening of raiders of the lost arc will be a chance for people who love these places to say good-bye to the century 21, 22, and 23 theaters, across santana row. the families who own these properties want to tear down the theaters and redevelop these parcels of land and bring in more money than these. especially since the domed theaters don't bring in the crowds as they have to compete with on demand movies at home. the owners have entered in a long term lease to develop this property but there are hundreds of people in the south bay who

want to see these 50-year-old structures preserved forever. one woman who used to work the snack bar has posted a video trying to persuade people to sign a feet save the domes from the wrecking ball and have these designated historical buildings. the state is going to consider this to be a historical structure. a federal government expected to consider the domes for preservation and so is the city of san jose. if you look at this shot from change.org, more than 6,000 people have signed a petition on that website asking mayor chuck read please preserve the domes. tickets are available for the 7:00 showing on sunday evening which if you're not familiar is a story about a man on a quest to protect and preserve important artifacts in history. >> that was surprisingly deep. >> exactly, for bob.
