tornadoes in missouri now heading east for what could be a rough weather weekend for millions starting "today," friday, march 28th, 2014. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm savannah guthrie alongside carson daly, tamron hall, matt, al and natalie all have the morning off. if they're sipping tequila somewhere without me, i hope they're saving me some. >> they're saving it for five months. >> we've got a lot of news going on this morning. our top story, once again, the search for flight 370, and it has been refocused. it was based on a new analysis which indicates the plane did not fly as far south as previously thought. we have heard in the last few moments that search planes may have spotted potential debris in
7:02 am
this search area. let's go to bill neely in perth this morning with more. bill, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. a dramatic twist in the search, perhaps the most dramatic so far, the old search area which we can show you here has been abandoned. the up in one is 700 miles away and much closer to perth. and the search is on there right now. in fact, a new zealand plane has returned here reporting an object of interest. day 21 and a twist no one expected. planes leaving australia on a shorter flight to a new search area. one the australians say might be the crash point, not just a debris field. the switch came after investigators looked again at the plane's radar path. >> this continuing analysis indicates the plane was traveling faster than was previously estimated, resulting in increased fuel usage and reducing the possible distance
7:03 am
it traveled south into the indian ocean. >> so the search zone has moved from this area, 1,500 miles from perth to here just over 1,100 miles away. planes can get there faster and stay longer. >> so we're in a different part of the ocean. we're starting all over again with a blank page. >> reporter: search organizers say the past week wasn't a waste. >> this is the normal business of search and rescue operations that new information comes to light, refined analyses take you to a new place. i don't consider the original work a waste of time. >> reporter: authorities say the new analysis is now the most credible lead. it follows many others. >> there is a credible lead. >> the most credible lead. >> very credible lead. >> the most credible lead that we have. >> reporter: the new search zone is not only closer, it's less treacherous to fly in. the u.s. navy p8 could have up to six hours there, not the
7:04 am
previous three. it is still a huge area. about the size of the fifth largest u.s. state new mexico. >> and bill, i have to ask you, if this new search area is supposed to be potentially the crash point, the point of impact, does that mean they're now searching for heavier wreckage, including, perhaps, the black box or the fuselage. something that would've immediately sunk to the bottom of the sea? >> they're looking for anything, savannah. even small debris could be traced back via the ocean currents over 21 days to something bigger, even the plane. the black box, of course, will have sunk. and one piece of news, a black box locater is here. but the ship meant to tow it isn't here yet. and it will take nine days to reach any potential site. now, the data recorder's batteries run out in about 11 day's time. so they're already, if you like, fading and dying, that is a bit of a setback for the
7:05 am
investigation. >> yeah, that's a narrow window. and let me ask you, bill, have searchers given up on the idea that some of these satellite images that captured what appeared to be very large debris of some kind were connected at all to malaysia flight 370? or is there still some possibility? >> reporter: that's very difficult, isn't it? because we were bombarded with those hopeful signs 122 pieces there, 300 pieces here. the malaysians are saying they could still be consistent with this new field, but you know, it's a very, very long way away. and i think the australians were more keen to play down those previous satellite images and concentrate on this new field. >> bill neely with all the latest and big developments this morning, thank you. meantime, it's been nearly a week since the massive and deadly mudslide in washington. and while officials say they have months of work ahead of them, residents are pulling together to help each other out.
7:08 am
announce the death toll increasing. the fire chief says he's never seen so much destruction before, but he's never seen a town come together quite like this. savannah, carson? >> miguel almaguer, thank you very much. >> meantime, residents picking up the pieces in missouri this morning following several reports of tornadoes there. and dylan's following that this morning. >> goo this is part of a very fast-moving storm system that is in trenton, missouri, just to the northeast about 80 miles of kansas city, missouri, and this could be just a taste of what's to come this weekend. >> just sad to see it all gone. >> reporter: thunderstorms, hail, and one reported tornado left a line of damage in northern missouri yesterday. demolishing houses like the home cali's parents built more than 40 years ago. >> my folks are both gone now, and it's, you know, it's like the final ending, everything's gone. i had always hoped that i would be able to live here some day.
7:09 am
>> high winds blew out the doors and windows of the home diane chambers' family owned for more than 25 years. but her house is still standing. and she's grateful. >> i'm happy it's still standing and i didn't lose our pictures and momentos and things from memories that over the years, i'm glad that's still here. >> reporter: in all, at least four homes were damaged from the powerful wind and hail. this morning, as residents clean up, they prepare for another bout of extreme weather possibly later today. >> this is all part of a bigger storm system that is going to bring periods of severe weather. today, you can see a lot of the severe storms are occurring right now, down through parts of louisiana and moving into mississippi and alabama. and it's in this area where we will see torrential downpours and the possibility of hail, cloud to ground lightning and also isolated tornadoes. that's why the whole area in red from eastern texas right on over into the panhandle of florida, including parts of mobile, alabama, as well.
7:10 am
this is the area where we could see strongest storms today. but even though we're not going to see strong storms everywhere. again, those would be isolated and hit and miss, we'd be looking at widespread rain, perhaps as much as 2 to 3 inches, especially in the panhandle of florida and parts of alabama and up into georgia, too. it is going to be another active weend. we're not talking about snow this time, this time we're talking about severe storms and torrential rain. >> dylan, thank you. >> now to politics and the so-called bridgegate scandal facing chris christie. an investigation commissioned by the new jersey governor has now cleared him of wrong doing. and christie spoke out after the findings were announced. nbc's kelly o'donnell in trenton. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carson. governor christie says he's still thinking about running for president despite the damage to his poll numbers and reputation because of the bridge traffic scandal. and this new report is being slammed by democrats as one-sided. even a whitewash. and it finds christie was not
7:11 am
involved. first came the media event, where a team of lawyers hired by governor christie's office unveiled the findings of a taxpayer funded review that concludes christie did not know about a political plot to shut down traffic lanes. >> this is a vindication of governor christie in that we found what he'd been saying all along was true. >> reporter: then the governor went on tv. his trademark self-confidence on display when asked about voters in iowa. >> i think they love me in iowa, too, diane. i've been there a lot. >> in an interview with abc news, christie said the bridge scandal will have no bearing on whether he runs for president. >> what's happened in the past ten weeks, i think, ultimately will make me a better leader. >> reporter: christie claims nothing he did could've inspired former aide bridget ann kelly or
7:12 am
david wildstein to think causing a traffic jam would win christie's favor. >> i obviously didn't make it clear enough to these folks that this kind of stuff was unacceptable. >> reporter: the 360-page report blamed wildstein and kelly for the lane closures, but also made public personal details. that kelly, and christie's ousted former campaign manager, bill steppian, briefly had a personal relationship. neither was married. stepien's lawyer blasted the report for including that, quote, gratuitous detail as a regrettable distraction from the findings that stepien was not involved in shutting down the traffic lanes. >> reporter: while democrats are criticizing the report, the lawyers involved say their work will ultimately be judged by the outcome of other investigations being done by state lawmakers here and federal authorities, u.s. prosecutors. but after reviewing 250,000 pages of documents, interviewing 70 individuals, the lawyer's review could not explain why the lanes were closed.
7:13 am
no political motive was uncovered. carson, savannah? >> kelly o'donnell, thank you for that. let's turn to tamron with the latest on the president's trip overseas. >> yeah. a lot going on there. good morning, everyone. president obama is visiting saudi arabia today in an effort to warm relations with america's most powerful arab ally. nbc's peter alexander is in rome, italy, where the president began his day. peter, good morning. >> reporter: tamron, good morning to you. president obama will be meeting and having a private dinner with saudi arabia's king abdullah today. among the most significant topics the two men will focus on, iran, syria and egypt as well as the role of the muslim brotherhood. the saudis want to increase weapons to syrian rebels to insurgents in that country fighting against the assad regime. iran, which is saudi arabia's

7:19 am
more children diagnosed in new jersey than alabama. it speaks to the criteria we're looking for. but that big question that looms in every parent's gut is what causes this? the honest question is, we don't really know yet. could there be environmental factors? certainly in some families, autism runs more commonly. there's a genetic hit. earlier this week, there was a brilliant study out of rockefeller university looking at fetuses in the second and third trimester of development. and they can start to see early brain changes in autistic children even before they were born. it raises the real probability that this is something that happens in utero. >> tell us more about that study that came out independently from the numbers we got yesterday. how big of a discovery is that perhaps it happens that autism is developed during pregnancy in the womb? >> well, it adds to the growing body of evidence that this is something, is there a genetic switch that goes on in a mom or dad? is it related to paternal age? are there environmental toxins?
7:20 am
could it be a virus? something like influenza that mom gets? could it be a generation skipping thing that happens to grandparents passed on to then the young adults who then have their children? this increasingly is where the science is going. and i know what i'm going to say now is going to irritate a lot of people, but it does increasingly mean it's not vaccines that cause problems when children get their baby shots. it goes to an insult earlier in fetal development. and we really have to start all getting on the same page and looking for the cause. we don't know it yet, but we're getting closer. >> thanks for the insight, dr. nancy snyderman, guys? >> thank you so much. we've got willie here covering orange room duty. >> yep. >> something special for those of us that might text and walk. >> i can't tell you how many times i've watched savannah text and walk into a stop sign. it's incredible. we're talking about transparent texting. come with me into carson's orange room back here.
