>> so you guys go. take the day off. >> exactly. >> well you ponder that. we want to get on a serious note to the top story. that is a frustrating search by air and water for any clue as to what may have happened to that malaysian jetliner. it is possible the plane could be lost deep below the ocean surface, of course. and could it be there longer than anyone imagined? kerry sanders is joining us with more. >> reporter: now a u.s. navy official involved in the search going on basically in this area is saying publicly what a lot of people have been saying privately since then search began. lacking evidence it's possible the search for flight 370 could take quote, an intenable amount of time. with aircraft back in the search zone today, a race against time.

the plane's black boxes will likely only keep pinging for another week. the u.s. navy's pinger locater is now headed to the search zone. >> once we do get a position with the locater, we will deploy this underwater vehicle here. >> reporter: back in kuala lumpur emotions boiled over. we want evidence chanted those relatives of the passengers. you must return our relatives no strings attached and hand us the murderer. the new search zone is about the size of new mexico. where waves and currents are less severe than the previous search area. even if debris is eventually located, 23 days into this mystery, tracing back the spot where the plane may have gone it has endless variables. >> we don't even know did it

sink right away, did it float on the surface for awhile. >> reporter: the flight went into the ocean and a submarine like the abyss were to find it experts say international maritime law does not apply. aviation law established in 1944 determines which country is ultimately in charge of the investigation. >> if the airplane crashes on the high seas, the jurisdiction is with the state of registry of the aircraft nap is malaysia in this case. >> reporter: as costs mount, the question, when does this end? >> they'll have to re-evaluate the assets they're using and what they're doing in the next week or two. they can't allow this to go on because it will get so costly. >> reporter: the pingers on these so-called black boxes which are orange have seven or eight days left with this

pinger. interestingly the new regulations going forward next year will require batteries that last for 90 days which, of course would be useful now. >> kerry sanders this morning. thank you. more rain in the forecast today in washington state which will not help the crews looking to recover victims from the debris of that massive mudslide. but there has been welcomed news as the days drag on. miguel almaguer has been covering this since it happened. what's the latest? >> good morning. after learning the death toll has risen to 18 authorities discovered another body and not yet identified it. finally good news here. the number of missing has dropped from 90 to 30. i want to show you what rescue teams have on the ground. they have been searching the debris field for more than a week now. some 400 first responders where these homes used to be looking for signs of any victims for any

possible survivors which rescue teams now concede will be nearly impossible. yesterday at 10:37 a.m. a very poignant moment in the search zone. first responders paused for a moment of silence to remember the victims and to remember those that survived this deadly mudslide. it's been a difficult time not just for those first responders but for the volunteers who have also joined them in the debris field. >> this is a very emotional event for a lot of these people. we have family members digging for their loved ones alongside us. >> reporter: it's been difficult for so many people not just in the search zone but also in the small communities up and down the area. there will be church services held today to remember the victims. certainly another sad day here near oso, washington. >> thank you very much. could there possibly be a breakthrough when it comes to the crisis in ukraine? john kerry will meet with his

russian counterpart. he was on his way home from saudi arabia when he redirected his plane hoping to find a solution to the crisis. chuck todd joins us from meet the press. >> good morning to you, erica. >> there are eyes around the world looking at this meeting set to happen. what is the thinking though? what is the hope of what can realistically come out of this? >> well i guess the best that can be hoped for and the united states will never say this publicly, they let putin lock in his games here in crimea in exchange for him backing his troops off of the border of ukraine. that seems to be the back and forth here. there is some good news. president obama and putin seem to have a decent enough conversation that it led to this idea that kerry could change his plans, go to paris rather than come back to washington and meet with lavrov and see if they can

come up with a diplomatic solution. we've been down this road before. right before the crimean referendum. then in that phone call it was like two steps forward but three steps back because you had putin talk about moldova and making the same claims as in crimea. that he needs to protect russian citizens. we'll see what happens today. there's an inkling of hope something can happen today, but i'm not of mystic. >> let's turn now domestically to obamacare the affordable care act. monday is the deadline now essentially. >> sort of. >> there are a few caveats there. let's go with that to make life easy this morning. 6 million people have now signed up. public opinion is changing slightly. the number's improving in terms of americans who approve of the affordable care act. what's behind that change? >> well i think it's a slight sort of maybe some of it's

fatigue. i talked to some democrats. they think fatigue, debate fatigue about health care oddly helps them a little bit. while still the republican base gets so fired up about trying to get rid of health care trying to repeal it the fatigue on swing voters saying let's fix it we don't need to repeal it. but it's not a galvanizing message for democrats. all is on the republican side. it's what's firing up their voters for the midterms. and that's what's frustrating the white house. you're right. there's a slight change in poll numbers, but it's more of just passive acceptance. it's not enthusiastic. >> chuck, nice to see you this morning. we'll check with you later on to see what's coming up on "meet the press." >> sounds good. let's get a check of top stories with jenna. >> we begin in california after a 4.1 magnitude aftershock rattled the los angeles area on

saturday. it came after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook the region friday night. the u.s. geological survey said there had been more than 140 aftershocks and they may be felt for weeks to come. a big ncaa upset made for a hostile night on the university of arizona campus. 15 people arrested after arizona's 64-63 overtime loss to wisconsin. they began throwing beer cans and fire crackers at officers. officers fired pepper balls at the crowd. there were no serious injuries. there's a new royal family photo captivating the world this morning. it features a rare glimpse of 8.5-month-old prince george. i bet that was one take. the duke and duchess of

cambridge wanted to release the photo before their trip to australia. cities across the globe dimmed lights to raise awareness about energy conservation. chicago unrecognizable with its iconic willis tower in the dark. and here in new york city the bright lights of broadway were dimmed along with many of times square's big billboards. and they are the biggest losers no more. saturday night the philadelphia 76ers snapped their 26-game losing streak. if you're going to win, win big. they led by double digits in the first quarter. they put up 70 points by half-time. and eventually beat the detroit pistons. that means they are still tied with the cleveland cavaliers for the longest losing streak in nba history. this is what we talked about. i don't know what's worse. not quite winners enough to brag or not quite losers enough to

hold a record. they're sort of just tires, i guess. so the big question is congrats maybe? >> the win comes when we get to the draft, right? >> yes. >> they will have the biggest chance to draft a great player for next year. >> last night they celebrated as they should. thanks. in health news important information for the millions of people who consume diet beverages. researchers say older women who drink two or more a day are more likely to develop heart disease. >> it's important to know it may not be a direct cause and effect. in other words, the drinks themselves may not be killers. perhaps they're drinking diet sodas to balance out other unhealthy habits. but the results are worth noting. >> reporter: on any given day, one in five americans will down a diet drink. but a new study says the women

who drink the most may be more likely to develop heart disease, even die from it. >> consumption of two or more diet drinks per day was associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events. >> reporter: the women's health initiative study looked at 60,000 post-menopausal women over a time frame of nine years. women who consumed more than two diet drinks a day were 30% more likely to experience a cardiovascular event. and 50% more likely to die from related heart disease than women who never or rarely drank diet drinks. researchers caution the risk is still low. considering heart disease is very common. and they point out the women who drank more diet drinks were also more likely to have other risk factors. >> the highest proportion of women with a history of diabetes higher proportion of women with history of high blood pressure they also on average

consumed higher calories than women in the reference group. >> reporter: so for scientists who have long said artificially sweetened drinks don't help people lose weight more research is needed. but many agree this latest study on diet drinks is at least food for thought. >> it raises a question more than answers anything yet. hopefully we'll know the answer to that in the future. >> reporter: now, the american beverage association responded saying because of those other risk factors, quote, it is impossible to attribute their cardiovascular health issues to their diet intake. scientists say it's too early to say stay away from diet drinks. >> thanks so much. dylan now has a checkf your forecast on this sunday. good morning. >> good morning. and it is raining hard in parts of new england. in new york city yesterday, we ended up with a record rainfall. it's the wettest day we've seen so far this year.

if anybody was driving in it you know what i'm talking about. here you see down into eastern connecticut, that's where our heaviest rain is right now. and this will continue to move to areas like washington, d.c. we'll see more showers in the mid-atlantic through the day today. then it will wind down into tonight. but on the west coast that's where we're seeing a little bit more rain. you can see the wind on the appalachians and even snow across central and northern new england. that's a good morning. 6:15 the time right now. we saw some very heavy rain yesterday across the bay area. you can see we've cleared out very nicely. however, we still do have a few isolated showers, especially through the altamont pass right now coming through 580. if you're doing any traveling this morning, just expect to run into a little bit of slick roadway there. otherwise things look pretty didn't for the rest of the day. we are talking about some sunshine. right now wee lots of low clouds across the area. later this afternoon, a mix of sun and clouds and overall temperatures a little warmer than yesterday, back into the

low 60s. >> that is your latest forecast. erica? we have an update own a young girl who recently had a lifesaving surgery. we've been sharing with you her story for months. a rare disease constantly made her hungry. just one week after surgery, this brave little girl is doing very well. >> reporter: today alexis shapiro is out of the hospital but still under observation in cincinnati. her doctors say she's making important strides. already her diabetes has been reversed she no longer needs insulin and she's not always hungry like she had been. in a statement to nbc news her pediatric surgeon says she can eat four or five bites now and have a feeling of fullness that we all take for granted. alexis before she had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. afterwards her family discovered a part of her brain that

regulates diet and appetite was damaged. >> she never feels full. no matter what she eats her body hangs onto it. >> reporter: by 12 she was over 200 pounds and only 4'7" and needed weight loss surgery. when the insurance company refused to pay for the procedure saying she was too young, the family got help from people around the world. they raised more than $85,000 online for the operation they felt alexis couldn't wait for. >> the support we've gotten has been amazing. >> reporter: then another big surprise. the insurer reconsidered its decision and will cover the costs saying before it had no information indicating that this patient had a rare disease. now new hope for alexis that the operation will help her lose weight and gain her life back. for "today," ranbc news. coming up a reunion six decades in the making.

good morning to you. looking live at a beautiful sunrise over dublin on this sunday morning, thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. meteorologist anthony slaughter has a look at the weekend forecast and whether or not the rain is going to continue. >> yes, i knew it was quite a soaker yesterday. in fact some places in the north bay got up to 2 inches of rain and this morning we're looking at dry conditions at least across most of the board. we still have a few isolated showers. i'll show you that across the altamont pass. really other than that that's all we're seeing and this is going to be the scenario we look at all day long just hit and miss shower activity at least for the first half of the day, and you'll notice a lot of that activity over near livermore.

as we wake up really a lot of cloud cover, not a whole lot of sunshine, but you know the thing about the difference from yesterday to today we will see more sunshine as we progress through the day, although right now you can still see in the south bay lots of low clouds hanging on lightly. we'll see temperatures in the low 60s today, kris. a tad bit warmer than yesterday. but we're not done with the rain. more rain in the forecast for tomorrow. so we'll talk about that this morning at 7:00. we'll see you then. >> thank you very much anthony. all across the bay air kr this morning cleanup is under way from this weekend's storms what we've gotten so far. a number of trees came down in yesterday's wind and rain. in san francisco, crews worked for hours to remove this large tree that fell in the castro district on hartford between 19th and 20th streets. that tree fell onto a garage brought down some power lines and hit a gas meter which pg&e says ruptured that gas line. neighbors were evacuated, but just for about an hour until utility crews could cap that

leak. in burlingame pg&e crews worked well into the night to repair power lines brought down in the rain by a huge branch of a eucalyptus tree. a 93-year-old man from marin has been missing more than a month now, and now there is a reward to find him. his name is robert davis and he lives in san rafael. he was last seen february 26th driving his silver toyota camry. there is now a $5,000 reward being offered for information that leads to his return. police are asking anyone with information to call the san rafael police department. just another reminder that time is running out for uninsured californians who have not yet signed up for health care coverage. the deadline is tomorrow. now, there still are a lot of folks who have yet to enroll and if you miss the deadline to apply, you do have to pay a penalty and then you don't have health insurance either. yesterday at san jose's health fair hundreds of people waited in line to speak with counselors and insurance agents who were

helping peepople get started. applications will be time stamped. people have until 11:59 april 15th to complete the process online and select a health care plan but the bulk of the work has to happen before 11:59 on monday. coming up at 7:00 on "today in the bay" we'll show you why this bay area car salesman is traveling 3,000 miles to try to sell a truck to a well known late-night talk show host. all of that and the rest of the day's news coming up at 7:00. right now here's more of the "today" show.

first a look at this morning's top headlines as the search in the south indian ocean intensifies, there's grim prediction from u.s. navy official who says it could be years before ninos exactly what happened to the missing flight. more rain is in the forecast today in washington as the search for victims from the mudslide enters its eighth day. meanwhile, the number of missing has dropped now from 90 to 30. 30 the number still unaccounted for. more than 100 aftershocks including one registering a 4.1 magnitude rattled southern california since saturday's 5.1 earthquake. still to come in this half hour, a little girl with a very big spirit and smile that instantly melts hearts. she's won all of us over. we've been sharing her story this week. this morning she's live in the studio to talk about her special bond with a special guy, michigan state basketball player. hey, lacey. >> so sweet. also ahead finally the end
