trying to find air flight 370, but officials are vowing the scope of the operation is now increasing, not decreasing. nbc's katy tur is in kuala lumpur. good morning to you. >> reporter: now we just came out of a slightly contentious news conference where the transport minister refused to confirm what's been out there a while. the last words out of the cockpit were kul "all right good night" and refused to confirm a slide that there was a loop around malaysia. asked why he wouldn't show the press, wouldn't comment. this is adding to the mistrust of the malaysian government they're not being entirely forthcoming as time is literally running out. the batteries on the black boxes are expected to die in the next week. today, the u.s. navy p-8 poseidon joined nine other aircraft and it ten ships to canvas the search area, 1,100 miles west of perth, australia,

private health insurance in 2014 and last chance to avoid paying a penalty if you don't. administration officials tell me today is going to be their busiest day yet. but even on this final day, there were more problems for hours this morning. health cacare.gov was down due technical problems and it was flooded due to procrastinators. nothing like a deadline to get people moving. a last-minute surge of sign-ups and 2.5 million calls in the last week alone, more than the entire month of february. in addition to the president, the white house has enlisted a cast of celebrities to make the obamacare pitch. >> spread the word. >> reporter: administration officials are now touting more than 6 million sign ups through late last week. this is what they were shooting for last september. >> i think success looks like at least 7 million people having signed up by the end of march 2014. >> reporter: still, plenty of questions remain unanswered.
7:06 am
among them, how many people have actually paid for their new coverage? what's the breakdown between young and old enrollees? and how will next year's premiums be affected? obamacare remains the most divisive issue in politics today. republican critics have relentlessly attacked the law, its cost and shifting deadlines. one senator even dismissing the latest enrollment figure, too. >> i don't think it means anything, chris. i think they're cooking the books on this. >> reporter: the white house says that no one will be penalized if they're in their words trying to enroll when the midnight deadline hits today. the official enrollment totals and also that critical young versus old age breakdown, we likely won't know for a couple more weeks. experts say it will be a couple more years before we really know how well this law works. remains to be seen. >> that's a key piece of the puzzle. peter alexander at the white house, thank you. >> let's bring in chuck todd, nbc's chief white house correspondent and political director. ch chuck, good morning to you. let's start with the simple
7:07 am
question. are they cooking the books? when you talk to people in neutral corners of washington, what are they telling you? >> reporter: nobody is saying they're cooking the books. the 6 million is real. there is an examination of who has been paying and over 80% of those who signed up have actually paid in the first month. so that seems to be something that also is sort of a myth, that isn't as true, as some would like it to be as far as folks on the right. but i think in the big picture here, you've got to remember where they started. there was real fear inside the white house. that this law could collapse. that they wouldn't get here. so at a minimum, the importance of hitting the 6 million, and they may get close to 7 million. because don't forget, this is a sort of deadline tonight, right? they've got all these caveats in, if you're in line, basically until the end of the month. but getting to where they got, it means the law is unrepealable, matt, here to stay. so then we advance to the next
7:08 am
part of the debate, okay, then how do you fix the problems that people think are there. >> you can't repeal it. but does that mean seven months down the road as the midterm elections come around that this will be any less of an issue in terms of close races in congressional districts? >> reporter: no, i don't think at this point the law is so embedded, it's sort of as a political negative for the democrats and a political negative overall, that i don't think anything is going to change by november. that this is going to take maybe two years for the politics of this to work itself out. and that's assuming everything continues to go as the administration has claimed it would. that right now you've got the 7 million signing up, and then every time they get more and more. don't forget here, we still have 35 million people without insurance. okay? when you throw in all of the numbers, the expanded medicaid of 4 million, new sign-ups of 7 million, and the 26-year-olds, that's 15 million. we still have 35 million uninsured. so they've still got to work on getting that number down.

7:44 am
something that's been around for a while. maybe not as common as it should be. but a friendly divorce. is this a fancy way of describing a friendly divorce? >> well, i'm sure people who manage to create a friendly divorce end up finding their way to some of the practices and principles i'm teaching in the conscious uncoupling process. and yet, most people, truthfully, are pretty overwhelmed by the very big emotions that can take us over. and in many ways, take us out. but we want to remember that the decisions that we're making in those moments, you know, are going to be living with us in many, many years to come. the choices we make and actions we take. we want to actually have our feelings but not let our feelings have us. >> now, do you take any offense to the fact that some people are treating it a little bit as a punch line? that they think this phrase and term is kind of like a goofy new-agy term? >> well, no, because people aren't quite aware yet of what it is. and, you know. they're kind of stunned to hear
