>> he has a way of 0 explaining complicated issues the rest of us can understand. >> if you have money in the stock market, you want to hear this. we'll get to michael lewis in a little while. general motors related to the switch problems thought to be responsible for at least 12 deaths. today, the company's head comes face to face with lawmakers following an emotional meeting she had with the families of accident victims last night. let's get to tom costello in washington. good morning. >> reporter: the saturn was already on the list of recalled vehicles, now newer models being recalled. nbc has obtained an internal document showing eight years ago the company ordered a design change to fix the problem with its ignition switch and never told its exist iing customers about the problems and never told the government. general motors problems keep growing, along with its list of recalled cars.

the nation's second biggest automaker is now recalling another 1.3 million evacuation in the u.s. that may experience a sudden los of electric power steering resulting in a higher risk of a crash. the new list now includes 2004 malibus along with four other gm models. it comes as the ceo is apologizing to their customers. >> something went wrong with our process in this instance and terrible things happening. >> reporter: for failing to recall ignition switches and deaths including 18-year-old natasha and 15-year-old amy and died after their chevy lost power and crashed into a tree in 2006. >> these were our children and they just act like they don't matter.

they may not have mattered to gm but they mattered to us. >> reporter: now, tan internal memo showing a design engineer knew about the problem in 2006 and signed a document authorizing the redesign. the engineer was ray degirgio. under oath, he said he did not know about changes to the switch. if such changes were made, it was made but your knowledge and authorization? >> that is correct. >> reporter: this gm document authorizing changes to the switch was signed by degiorgio himself suggesting the company knew about the recall and changed the part and never told gm customers who never knew they were at risk. now, the witness table is set for today's hearing on capitol hill and ceo mary barra is sure to be grilled. >> gm accepted they didn't have this switch to meet their own specifications.

we need to ask why that was and what was the reason they went ahead and did it anyways. >> reporter: gm ceo mary barajas only been on the job a few months and in her prepared speech to lawmakers she says she does not know why it took so long and ordered and independent investigation and will apologize again to those family makers. >> the no just gm but also the federal regulators, the ones supposed to be watching these car companies under fire, right? >> reporter: yeah. the national highway transportation administration, democrats and republicans want to know why it didn't act when it had complaints and they said they didn't have sufficient evidence to order a recall but they will be on the hot seat also today. >> thank you. we have several major developments in this search for malaysia air flight 370 as 10 planes and nine ships comb the indian ocean. we're learning of problems early on that set crews back for three days.

katie is in kuala lumpur with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: that and a pretty startling admission as we reported yesterday during a particularly contentious press conference, the malaysian transport minister said he refused to confirm the last words out of the cockpit were all right. good night. that's because they were not the last words. we officially got the transcript from the cockpit today for the first time in three weeks. out for the first time today, the cockpit radio transcript show the last words were not "all right. good night" as reported but in fact good night malaysian, three seven zero." >> it's taken three weeks to correct this. unfortunately this gives the families of the victims more evidence that things have been hidden from them. >> reporter: the release comes amid a report from the "wall street journal" that lapses in coordination coordinations searching for the plane led rescuers astray wasting three days of the

house officials feared the law might collapse and how many young people have signed up and how many people have actually paid. as one white house official told me this is a major comeback story and likely we will hear from president obama a little later today. >> thank you very much. the united states is in talks with israel about releasing convicted spy jonathan pollack early from his life sentence as an incentive in trouble middle east peace negotiations. people familiar with the talks say israel would have to undertake significant concessions. pollack was arrested in 1985 after passing secret documents to israel while working as a civilian analyst for the u.s. navy. the governor of washington is now asking president obama to declare a major disaster in his state, so victims of the deadly mudslide can get quick access to federal relief funds. the requests includes money for funeral and health care for surviving and first responders. financial loss from the mudslide

don't know the market >> here's the way you write about it in this book. the u.s. stock market was now a class system rooted in speed of haves an have-nots. the haves paid for nanoseconds. the have-nots had no idea that nanoseconds had value. >> the problem is that the haves arer generating so much money sitting in the middle of the market this way they created a whole echo system around themselves on wall street. they pay the exchanges and pay as soon as this profitable bu business arose, it created its own logic >> why shouldn't i applaud these guys for using technology to their best advantage? isn't that what the system is all about? don't we want speed in trading? >> we do want speed in trading but we want every dollar to stand the same chance. it's an unfair playing field. it's crazy for investors to be playing with people who have knowledge of the prices before they do. >> you are shaking a stick and
