good morning to you. 4:30. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker. laura garcia-cannon is off this morning. let's check in on the forecast with christina loren. >> good morning to you peggy, scott, everybody at home. temperatures are chilly to start. we have a nice finish to the day. we'll see clouds increase, a little rain on the way, then we warm you up. lots to go over but first let's say good morning to mike inouye. >> good morning. we'll take you to the san mateo bridge. eastbound coming toward us we had a break in traffic but no traffic break. we're looking toward the maps, the san mateo side of the bridge on the peninsula moves smoothly.

we look at the maps we see the speed sensors not a problem over to 101 but the dumbarton bridge is an issue. we have a crash eastbound at 84 approaching newark boulevard. that's your second off ramp off of the dumbarton bridge. reports of an overturned vehicle. i'll check in with chp again. we see slowing but there are three other lanes to get by so you should be all right. the rest of the travel moving close to the speed limit as well as for the south bay, we have construction. i'll point out a couple spots in transition. >> now to a developing story in texas where federal agents and investigators are searching for answers this morning following another deadly shooting at ft. hood. a soldier opened fire yesterday killing three and wounding 16 before taking his own life. jay gray has reaction from a neighbor of the suspected

shooter. >> reporter: all clear. but still far from okay this morning at ft. hood. >> walked into one of the unit buildings, opened fire, got into a vehicle, fired am from a vehicle, got into another building and opened fire. >> three were killed, 16 injured before the suspected gunman identified as 34-year-old ivan lopez, apparently turned his weapon on himself. >> we do not know a motive. we know this soldier had behavior health and mental health issues. >> reporter: lopez was undergoing diagnostic testing for post traumatic stress disorder. >> you never know who you live next door to. >> morris says she was with the wife of the suspected gunman when she heard the tragic news. >> she wasn't ablg to say anything. she just broke down. like she was hurting and it was

in disbelief. >> reporter: shock and pain felt in central texas. >> i think we all feel indented to the men and women who serve our country and put themselves in harm's way. it is heartbreaking to be so close to a tragic event as this. >> reporter: a tragedy that affects the entire country. >> we're heartbroken something like this might have happened again. >> reporter: in 2009, major nidal hasan opened fire at ft. hood killing 13 and injuring at least 30. >> in 2009 i was here. it's unbelievable. >> reporter: unbearable for the family and friends of those losted and injured. >> reporter: the commander says this was not an act of terror like the attack almost five years ago but investigators aren't sure what may have sparked the deading shooting rampage. jay gray, nbc news. thank you very much.

as jay mentioned this is the second shooting at ft. hood in less than five years. nidal hasan was sentenced to death. he could be the first u.s. service member executed by the military since 1961, however t appeals process is expected to take years. >> it was another sleepless night for thousands in chile after a second massive quake rocked that country's northern coast. the chilean president was among those evacuated. officials say the 7.6 quake did not cause major new damage, no new deaths reported. the aftershock hit in the same area as that massive 8.2 quake on tuesday that killed six people. for some perspective, the 7.6 aftershock was stronger than the 1989 quake in the bay area, a 6.9. >> closer to home this morning the chp trying to figure out

what a person was doing walking on highway 101 when he or she was hit and killed by a car about 9:00 last night. the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. about 20 minutes earlier witnesses called chp to report someone stumbling on the road on 101 near the great america parkway exit. >> the man who started a gun battle with police on a freeway will be sentenced. jurors convicted byron williams of groveland of four cou murder after peace officer. the 12-minute shoot-out happened on 580 in july 2010. no officers were hit. investigators say after the gun fight he was planning to go to san francisco to kill the leaders of the aclu and a nonprofit organization that works toward social change. >> two of five suspects arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old boy in campbell

park are expected in court. it stems from a fight with a homeless man. the man, john that were, stabbed the victim ivan diaz to debt. the suspects range in age from 17 to 20, the d.a.'s office is using california law called the provocative act doctrine to charge diaz' friends with his murder. >> it's our responsibility to charge them and hold them liable for the death of that young man. >> they didn't murder him. those were his friends. why would they want harm on him. >> those arrested deny their school mates are in a gain. they are upset that that were was let go without being charged. >> a man on a bike caught opening an electrical box and cutting the wires tuesday night. what he does, knocks out the

street lights. neighbors are making sure the culprit knows he was caught on camera with a sign in the electrical box. it's believed he cut the wires to return later to steal the copper. >> 20% of housing staff has been dismissed or quit. the university says that 18 resident advisers fired or resigned but the school is not saying why. students tell nbc bay area that the shake-up is related to an underage drinking incident. this comes after four white roommates allegedly harass a black roommate. the university says the shake-up is not related to that. a task force created to deal with the case will meet on campus tonight. >> a house near santa clara university may be turned into a dormitory. the two-bedroom house in university park is currentlying remodeled and it's been listed online as a six bedroom, three

weekend shaping up. make those outdoor plans. a little shower activity tomorrow but overall a big warm-up this weekend. if you want to hit the slopes you can, or you can hit the beach. we'll look at the forecast for both all throughout the morning. 59 degrees the forecasted high in san francisco. as the storm system starts to get closer to the coastline we're going to cloud up. we'll hold off on showers until we meet back tomorrow morning at about 6:00 a.m. starting to see that impacting the coastline. that's where we'll see the heaviest tomorrow. bring your umbrella to work agency you head through your friday. then the all important weekend. might blow your mind how fast we're going to climb. >> looking to the south bay this will build. you'll see a lot more cars northbound 101. the map flew the area and the

live shot, a light flow of traffic. crews blocking a lane or shoulder of overnight road -- nothing unexpected. we'll zoom in to one of the signs. northbound 880 approaching the off ramp. chp and department of transportation are aware of this sign. sounds like it's on the shoulder. it was just a distraction. looking at eastbound 84 on the newark side. that crash i told you about is out of the lanes now. there are no lanes blocked but watch it coming off of the bridge. no major injuries off of the dumbarton bridge to the east bay and no problems across either. we'll look toward the tri-valley and web. that has cleared after crews, o no -- approaching the dublin interchange a live look show as very light volume of traffic

give america a raise bus tour is making a stop at capitol hill hoping to convince a divided congress why the minimum wage must go up. democrats insist that minimum wage should be raised to about $10 per hour so let working americans out of poverty. the president's response. >> got a choice, you can give america the shaft or give it a raise. >> we should point out that the minimum wage in san jose is already at $10. it's $10.74 in san francisco. the city of richmond is looking to make minimum wage $12.30.

>> new this morning an investigation from the associated press has uncovered secret cuban twitter created by the u.s. government to undermine the country's communist government. according to documents obtained by ap, the project was launched in 2009 created by the agency for international development. the goal is get users to organize demonstration, stir political unrest. the project lasted more than two years before abruptly ending in 2012. >> this morning yahoo! says it's taking extra measures to protect its users. the company says all searches made on yahoo! will be encrypted. the move after former nsa contractor edward snowden leaked documents alleging the u.s. government spies on internet users. yahoo! plans to add more security to its messenger and video chat services. >> move over siri.

microsoft unveiled its new assistant. let's turn to kayla tausche. good morning. >> scott, good thursday morning. futures higher after stocks rose for a fourth day on wednesday, it's the longest rally for the markets in nearly two months. investors reacting to a report showing 191,000 private sector jobs were added last month, that of course ahead of friday's employment data from the labor department. we get numbers on new filing for unemployment t trade deficit and the nation's services sector. the dow rising to 16573, just shy of a record high. the nasdaq added 8 to close at 4276. you might think twis before complaining to your airline again. the u.s. surpreme court is giving airlines more legal protection over how they operate their frequent flyer benefits. the court ruled against a case.

and scott. and kortana if you're out there. we're in the 50s and upper 40s to start the day. it's chilly steady cloud cover. rolling on shore as we progress probably through mid morning. it will stay dry, the showers hold off until tomorrow morning. i wanted to show you san francisco looking pretty over the bay bridge. no low clouds there just yet but we are expecting that to kick in. we're so close to friday now. temperatures are going to end up in the mid-60s, so comfortable conditions just about everywhere except for san francisco with the onshore flow in place. 65 in the north bay, the east bay at 61 and 65 in the tri-valley. major changes coming our way. you want to hit the beach look likes sunday is the best day. saturday, great day to hit ha

in texas. tommy lynn is expected to die tonight sentenced to death for killing a 13-year-old in 1999. his lawyers want to know where the drugs are coming from before he is executed. recently the maker of standard drugs stopped supplying them on moral graunds leaving states wondering which lethal injection drugs to use. they are trying to protect the supplier from violence. >> a lawsuit claiming that a loved one was frozen alive will move forward against an l.a. hospital. doctors pronounced maria dead at white memorial immediate center. she suffered a heart attack. when por tigss we received her body they found her face down, nose broken and cuts and bruises to her face.

the family sued the hospital but a pathologist testified that the injuries likely happen after she woke up in the morgue and struggled to escape. the death toll in washington state has risen to 29. 18 are still missing following that mud slide over a week ago. one set of remains does not fit a description on the list. forcing crews to properly identify victims. most of the remains will be identified by the end of this week. and malaysia's prime minister says the church for the missing jetliner will not stop. planes took off from perth, australia to search again. still there has been no trace after it disappeared nearly a month ago. 239 people aboard. the australian prime minister says it's the most difficult search in human history. >> a line tear the keys not going to keep timing off the

doubleheader yesterday. that was against the indians. the a's took game one, they were on their way to winning game two but the top of the ninth, the ball goes into the glove of the right-fielder josh reddick, two runs score. you can hear the boos. the indians go on to win, 6-4. >> a bruised knee and food poisoning likely will not keep tim lincecum off the mound. the pitcher is coming off of a rough week but he plans to start this afternoon in arizona. >> that is rough. hopefully keep the diamondbacks offense at bay like tim hudson was able to do in his first start for the orange and black. hudson went 7-2/3 innings. >> off the field third baseman pablo sandoval has give at any green light for negotiations to resume if the team's offer ever a three-year, $40 million deal
