good friday morning to you. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon. that breaking news happening in oakland. crews at an office of seattle -- of children's hospital rather after a fire. >> christie smith just got to the scene. officials there are calling this quite suspicious. >> reporter: yes, they are. good morning to you, scott. i spoke with a firefighter here and he said here are the circumstances. you have a fire that appears that it started on the outside of the building. they started getting calls at 3:00 in the morning when no one was supposed to be inside or outside. so they are sifting through debris trying to determine what

started this single alarm fire at a building for oakland children's hospital which is around the corner from the actual hospital itself. kind of looks like a home but they are using it for administration. firefighters arrived they say smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the building down a long, narrow dark drive way, one firefighter said it was suspicious. earlier told us to possibly be arson. no injuries to report. no one here again injured, no firefighters injured. they do have it knocked down at this point they tell me it's about $75,000 in damage. it looks like no one will be able to use this building today. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> turning to our microclimate forecast, a live look at san francisco and your drive through san jose will be fairly smooth at this early hour. we do have to get through some

heavy rain, though, this morning. let's talk to christina loren and we'll check the radar, also be checking with mike as well. there's your radar, christina. looks like quite the cell. >> oh, yeah, that's a pretty active radar. you can see here a lot of orange, a lot of yellow. the bulk of the moisture is coming through right now so yeah, early risers unfortunately that means we could see a slower than normal commute. but happy friday to you. you made it to the end of the week and all of this is going to come through pretty quickly. then we'll see light activity throughout the remainder of the day. we're not issuing a microclimate weather alert. you might find a little more danger out there this morning, you'll have slick conditions. you want to travel cautiously. a little debris on the highway, wouldn't be surprised. here's mike inouye. >> good morning. being friday and friday with spring break, well, the

tri-valley, you might not see the commute slower but your commute should be slower if it's wet where you're driving as christina is talking about. 580 looking all right. i had flashing lights which cleared the area. the road crews are clearing. we had slowing, there it is by the arrow. crews moving, that skews the sensor. there is a lighter volume. the green where it says dublin, wet roads in many spots. eastbound 580 at 680 we did have an overnight crash. no injuries, there may be activity on the shoulder as you approach that. there is more green toward oakland. look at the peninsula around the coast, that blue, that means where there is puddling and ponding, did show activity having passed through the area as well. traffic is light on 280 and 101. we'll see how the water affects those folks as well. >> mike, thank you. 4:33. friends and family will honor the life after union city marine killed by a suspected drunk driver a month after returning home from afghanistan.

23-year-old lance corporal andrew silva will be laid to rest at noon at st. ann catholic church in union city. silva was riding his motorcycle when alexander yonh crashed into him. he leaves a wife and 2-year-old son. >> this morning we could find out where a serial rapist will live after he is let out of prison t man serving time for raping dozens of women in the bay area all over california. it's up to a judge to decide where he lives. christopher evans hubbard also known as the pillow case rapist, is being let go from a state hospital on conditional release. he'll have to wear a gps monitoring device. he admitted to raping 40 women in the late 70s and again in the early 90s including one on the campus of monroe middle school in san jose. he is expected to live in

southern california near palmdale. >> a high school student's close call with drugs is a wake-up call in mountain view. a shocking presentation by mountain view police last night gave many a graphic look at what kind of drugs are out there and the harmful effects. parents heard terms like fizzle and molly and slang names and learned where kids may hide drugs. one student says others need to see this presentation. >> i have a few people that i strongly am convinced that do drugs, and i guess maybe like they seem pretty like oblivious to the whole situation. >> the presentation comes after a mountain view student was found motionless. >> investigators in san jose look at surveillance video

hoping to figure out who shot and killed the father after 6-month-old baby boy. the shooting happened early yesterday morning an lanai avenue and denali way blocks from overfelt high school. the victim's uncle identified his nephew eric mendoza as the victim. according to his family mendoza's wife found him dead in the car after returning from work. the neighborhood is known for gang activity but both police and family say there is nothing to suggest mendoza had gang ties. >> we have a big loss in the family right now. that shouldn't have happened. i think it's very sad. somebody took a big part of our family away for somebody that had nothing to do with what was probably going on at night. >> this is san jose's 11th homicide this year. >> soldiers are back at post it in ft. hood texas but it will be a long time before anything feels normal. ivan lopez visited a psychiatrist and showed no signs

of likely violence toward others or himself. two days ago authorities say lopez chose his victims at random when he shot and killed three and wounded 16 others. he turned the gun on himself. army officials say a fight with another soldier may have triggered the rampage. sergeant owens was one of those killed in the attack. >> because he was fighting for our country. >> to see unspeakable senseless violence happen in a place where they are supposed to feel safe, home base, is tragic. >> a prayer service will be held at ft. hood tonight. a memorial for the victims is planned for next week. >> in a few hours another coast guard crew from the bay area will join the rescue of a 1-year-old girl seriously ill off the coast of mexico. she is on a boat with her family who set sail around the world. here you see earlier home video of it. the boat is roughly 900 nautical miles off the coast of mexico. the 129th rescue wing left

moffett field, dropped parachuters and inflatable boats out of an aircraft near the ship. the crews stabilized the girl's condition. she is expected to be air lifted to the hospital today. chase cain is at moffett field. he will have a live report in the next half hour. >> this morning a key figure in the leland yee political scandal is free on a quarter million dollars bail. keith jackson had no comment for the mob of reporters as he left the glenn dyer detention center in oakland yesterday. he was released several hours after appearing in federal court. jackson is accused of trying to funnel cash into suspended senator yee's hands in exchange for political favors, also accused of being part of a murder-for-hire scheme but his attorney says his client is not a criminal. >> when somebody works in a community and works with people who are sometimes disadvantaged which he has done for many

years, he has a lot of support in this city and he should. >> his attorney also says the charges won't stick, jackson due back in court on tuesday. turning to our microclimate forecast, a live look at san francisco and the bay bridge from emeryville this morning. >> nice. looking pretty good so far as we wrap up this work week let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. how you doing this morning? >> i'm okay. friday always makes it easier to get out of bed. good morning to you. we've got a good looking day, second half of the day. right now the showers are coming through. we still need this rain so it really is a pleasant sight to see. we're getting heavier downpours now through san francisco, all of this extending now along the east shore, oakland picking up good rainfall which is good news. as you know our christie smith is live in oakland covering a fire. we'll have a live update coming up. temperatures, they are going to soar as we get into the weekend. we'll talk more about how hot it's going to be where you live.

it's going to come on fast. and we'll talk about what else is happening around the bay area, quite a few things to select from this weekend. mike, you know better than anybody because you do a weekend update. >> we love those prices free you and i try to cover. the bay bridge, not free if you cross from oakland into san francisco. the backup, it's minimal and as scott pointed out there's a little glisten to the lights. part because of the water on the lens. there has been some showers. the blue, that's the puddling and ponding. our traffic and weather systems tied together with the radar data. we're getting the reflection on the roadways. south bay, drier roads and also a car fire reported southbound 680 at montague expressway. it was smoke, not a lot of flames. they saw someone walking away carrying something so we'll check on that. chp doesn't have a lot of details.

4:44 on friday. we take a look at the approach on the bay bridge. getting things rolling looking pretty nice so far. spring break rolling throughout the area so could be lighter out there this morning according to mike. >> this morning australia begins an underwater search for the missing malaysian jetliner. time is running out with only a few days until the ping from the black boxes could die. that device only lasts about 30 days and flight 370 disappeared almost a month ago.

so far there have been no trace of that aircraft carrying 239 people on board. >> strong after shocks continue to rock the northern coast of chile. a 6.1 quake shook buildings. this after the massive 8.2 quake hit on tuesday, killing six people and damaging thousands of homes. many people are taking shelter in makeshift tents, there also is a shortage of water and electricity and gas. all of the shaking is happening not too far from iquique, a major port city. >> silicon victimalley's patent office will open next year. it's the first of its kind and originally scheduled to set up this year at san jose city hall. it's unrelated to the delay but there are big questions before the supreme court right now whether software should qualify for patents at all, something that silicon valley makes a

great deal of. analysts expect encouraging news when the jobs numbers are released. for that let's turn to bertha coombs. good morning. >> good morning, scott. we have the futures pointing to a higher open, stocks fell for the first time in five sessions on thursday, investors eagerly awaiting the big economic news which is the march jobs report. the expectation is we'll have seen 200,000 new jobs in march after early slow january and february, a lot of that being attributed to the really terrible weather that we saw on the east coast and the midwest. the expectation is unemployment will fall to 6.6%, the dow starts at 16,572 after slipping a half point. the nasdaq at 4237 after falling 38. the national highway traffic safety administration says it continues to get answers and documents from general motors about its recall ignition

switches that the safety regulator hasn't said yet when they are going to make that information public. gm has reportedly hired a third outside expert to help it with the recall response, they hired doug eler, a crisis management expert who works with firestone after its massive tire recall in 2000. google's lab says oops. it makes smart thermostats but the smoke alarms aren't as smart, a possible defect that could cause users to turn off the device with the wave of a hand. nest is immediately disabling that feature in smoke alarms that are wi-fi connected while it works on a fix and recommend that customers disable it or return those detectors for full refund. that would be very difficult for me because i tend to speak with my hands. >> thank you much with her somewhat italian heritage in

system but hey, count on calmer conditions as of about 8:00 a.m. this morning. so we're only going to deal with this for a few hours. that's the good news. by this evening as you make your way home from work, getting ready to enjoy that weekend, we'll be nice and dry. >> thank you much. what was supposed to be something that was going to break sky diving records ended in tragedy for a woman as she fell to her death. 220 people gathered in arizona to sky dive, one jumper's parachute didn't open. the woman was declared dead at the scene. it was the same location where two others fell to their death last year. attorneys for giants fan bryan stow want to use a new document in their lawsuit against the former dodgers owner frank mccourt. the report by the major league baseball states a culture of ap athe and indifference existed among many of the game day staff when stow was attacked. stow's attorney says some of the

conclusions support their argument that security at the stadium was insufficient. among the findings it questions whether the dodgers' decision to use officers wearing dodgers polo shirts instead of full uniforms was a mistake. but in a 17-page trial brief, mccourt's attorneys say security was up to par that day. >> we are learning more about the two attempted homicide suspects shot by authorities in fairfield. police say 27-year-old markell davis is wanted in connection to a shooting near fairfield high school. officers say cory davis is a suspect in a shooting in vacaville. officers say markell was armed with a gun when agents shot him yesterday afternoon outside after walmart about 30 minutes later a fairfield officer shot an armed cory davis across the street at an apartment complex. both men are now being treated at the hospital. >> in sacramento investigators calling a string of fires suspicious, the latest and largest was a massive fire at a commercial building downtown.

lighter volume around the bay. we're looking toward the north bay. southbound 101 through san rafael. look how much glow there is. the water is kicking up off the roadway on the cars behind the people who are kicking up the water. a look at the maps, the entire north bay with green over wet roads for 101 south, blue in san rafael where we took a look. that will be wet roads instead of damp. northbound 101, also reports of flooding at lucky drive and that will be an issue. the usual suspect, just came in, the rain has been hit as well as san francisco for the longest period for that side of the bay. the peninsula with wet roads. darn it. the hard thing. wet roadways. north of the dumbarton bridge. we have a crash, a car fire reported southbound 680 at montague expressway. two lanes are blocked but sounds like the fire itself down to smoke. a lighter volume of traffic keeps traffic moving relatively
