its way to help. >> a race against the clock in the search for a missing plane. why crews now have a few days to find those black boxes. >> we have heavy rain in parts of the bay area for the morning drive. it's not going to last all day a. nice weekend shaping up. what to expect where you live in moments. >> won't last all day. the here and now for the bay bridge. it's affected a backup here because of the metering lights being turned on. >> taking a live look outside over san jose, we are up and at it at 6:00 on friday, april 4, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. thank you for joining us on this friday. i'm peggy bunker in for laura. >> i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news, no one will be able to go to work at an administrative building at the children's hospital oakland. early this morning hit by this fire.

investigators calling this suspicious. the flames broke out around 2:00 at the building on 53rd street. christie smith joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. administrators were here for a short time, took a look at the damage and what they say is they won't be able to use the building today so. they are going to be moving the staff around who work here. they are going to accommodate them in other parts of the hospital because of course the building that they work in caught fire overnight about 2:00 this morning here on 53rd street about a half dozen people or so sometimes use the building i'm told. caught fire overnight. smoke and flames poured from the building. someone called that in, a 911 call, single alarm fire. firefighters tell us it took about 10 minutes to knock down but they call it suspicious. it started in the rear of the building when no one was around. >> looks like the fire started on the exterior rear of the structure and worked its way

inside up into the attic. took crews approximately ten minutes to extinguish. the fire is under investigation. >> reporter: firefighters we spoke with early on said that they didn't think that this building would be usable because of the damage to the attic. it smells like smoke inside. earlier they told us that the damage estimates were about $75,000 but now they say it looks closer to $150,000. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. happening now, help is on the way for a 1-year-old girl seriously ill off the coast of mexico. chase cain is live at moffett field where a second crew will leave in less than two hours. this is a whole family on a boat that is not working for them. >> reporter: right, it's not working. they sort of have been floating there in the pacific ocean for a couple of days. fortunately, the first group got to the family last night and say

that 1-year-old girl who has fallen ill she is at least stable and that the entire family seems to be in pretty good spirits. the first group left from here yesterday afternoon. it was the 129th rescue ring, part of the air national guard. it was around 9:00 when the first four rescuemen parachuted into the ocean and boarded the family sail boat. they call this a complex mission. to give you an idea the family's boat has been stranded about 900 nautical miles off the coast of mexico. it's a 36-foot sail boat. a couple days ago it lost power and could not steer. we have video of the family blogging about the journeys. the parents eric and charlotte are on the boat with two children, a 3 1/2-year-old girl, cora, and a 1-year-old named lira, the one who became very

sic a couple days ago. we're not sure what is wrong with the little girl, just that she is severely ill. they were trying to get her to a hospital as soon as possible. this morning at 8:00 another group from the rescue wing here, they are going to fly out and then eventually to the family's ship and try and figure out how to get them off the ship and to land. the priority of the girl. one of the thing, this rescue wing, they have already saved more than 1,000 lives to date so they are certainly up to this task. >> chase cain, thank you. a developing story out in the ocean, the search for that missing malaysian airlines plane continues. deep in the indian ocean. the search under way. hoping to detect pings from the two data recorders. crews do not have time on their side. they stop transmitting about 30

days after a frash. that's a few days from now. the plane disappeared march 8 with 239 on board. the weeks long hunt has not turned up a single piece of wreckage. >> strong after shocks are rattling the northern coast. today's strongest after shock was 6.1. that struck in the same area hit by the 8.2 quake. that left 6 people dead. you can see this has been devastating for the area. also no deaths have been reported since the initial quake. a heavy police presence is keeping order. >> let's check your forecast with a live look at san jose and the san mateo bridge f. you are headed out i think you can see you can expect some rain. >> this new video showing you how much rain we are talking about. our cameras captured earlier oakland, you can see pretty slick roads and a couple of raindrops. we'll talk now to christina.

>> i want to make sure everybody is aware what's on the radar before you walk out your door. this isn't the rain that is going to wake you up. it pitter-patters. we have some aftermath, split conditions, wind was strong so watch for debris. the heaviest rainfall extends from livermore through dublin, the tri-valley, but all of this will be winding down throughout the morning. temperatures are chilly so grab your coat. today's highs are going to end up in the mid-60s just about everywhere. another day of the upper 50s in san francisco. the sfz come in quickly. saturday is going to be a vale good looking day. clouds clear by noon tomorrow. temperatures comfortable up to about 66 in bodega bay and 74 as we head through sunday. laura has been off this week.

she visited tahoe. laura garcia-cannon says it's a winter wonderland up there. she will be back on monday. what a great photo. you want to hit tahoe because of the snowfall it's going to be comfortable. a little bit cooler on saturday. you have better conditions on saturday on the lower mountain. it doesn't matter on sunday. they picked up 6 feet above 6,000 feet. so a lot of fresh powder. let's check your drive. >> good stuff. looking toward the bay bridge. the metering lights are on. this contradicts what i'm saying about a lighter flow this being friday. look at the conditions from the toll plaza, let's look at the view from emeryville. kind of smoopy so i think chp had them turn on lights. lighter flow, lighter volume just in case spin-outs happen. be careful you see the view. they will be missed on the windshield.

welcome back. happy friday to you. we've had a lot of rain move over the bay area this week and this morning we're waking up with an active radar yet again. we'll track these showers to your door step, tell you when they are expected to clear and when we could see the 90s in the bay area in moments. >> so you saw christina's radar on 880, and this is a wet road situation. it's friday but expect a slower commute here, this evening as well. we'll give you the warning and the bay bridge toll plaza has the metering lights on. >> sounds good. here are today's top stories. suspicious fire caused about $150,000n damage to an administration building at children's hospital oakland. investigators say the flames appear to have started outside near the back of the converted

office. no injuries to report. >> health officials in l.a. say three men in the gay community have died of bacterial meningitis. another five have contracted the disease. bacterial meningitis can spread through close contact like kissing or sharing drinks. >> another rescue crew from the bay area will be on the way to save a 1-year-old girl who is seriously ill on a boat off the coast of mexico. the 129th rescue wing left yesterday. she's on a boat with her family who set sail around the world. >> new this morning a retired formula 1 racer in a coma showing moments of consciousness. michael shoemaker's manager says the 45-year-old is making progress. three months ago he fell while skiing in france and hit the right side of his head on a rock. he cracked his helmet. doctors started decreasing sedatives in january trying to wake him up. >> attorneys for bryan stow want

to use a new document in the suit against former dodgers owner frank mccourt. the report by major league baseball states a culture of apathy existed at dodger stadium where stow was attacked in 2011. stow's attorneys say some of the conclusions support their argument that security was insufficient. it questions the dodgers' decision to use officers wearing dodgers polo shirts instead of full uniforms. in its trial belief mccourt's attorney says security was up to par. >> preparing for the first regular season game against the dodgers, going to be a sellout crowd. >> it will. checking in with eadrian. the dodgers doing everything to spoil your crew down there, the dodgers with that home opener. >> reporter: it's going to be a battle. good morning to you. even though it's still very

coming up we'll check in with christie smith and tell us why investigators think that this is a suspicious fire. >> also new, the latest jobs report just released, it is encouraging news. tracie potts joins us live in washington, d.c. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. it's right about where experts thought it would be, the unemployment rate did not change, 6.7% nationally, the number of new jobs created in march, 192,000, on the low end of some of the predictions but pretty much where most of the experts thought it would be. add another 37,000 to that because after they calculated what was created last month they go back two months, every month they go back two to see if they made miscalculations. there were 37,000 additional jobs, some of that from late reports. add 37,000. bottom line of all of that, the economy appears to be stable at least based on those numbers.

there are more people we learned this week, who are applying for new unemployment claims, but, it didn't seem to affect the bottom line number. as for the rest of the economy a number of things. manufacturering jobs have shown modest improvement, new orders that boosted the service industry. but somewhat of a flat report not better not worse same unemployment rate as last month. >> about 6:32. getting a look at the weekend. many are happy that friday is here. let's show you san jose and san francisco. christina has the big forecast. >> fabulous. >> good morning to you. we had a lot of rain roll through. more this morning. so i think a lot of people will be happy about this warming trend. it's welcome for a lot of us. you can see now showers rolling through the bay area. i set this radar back three hours, you can see where the showers are positioned mostly

over the tri-valley. another batch over the peninsula. where you're headed give yourself extra time. slick driving conditions. throughout the day this will clear out. as we head throughout the weekend we have some major warming coming your way. 50s, though for now. 51 in the south bay to kick off the day. low 50s in san francisco and you can see here from all our microclimates showing you the same slick road conditions. so give yourself extra time. if you have to leave hold up, here is mike inouye to help you out the front door. >> we're looking here, i zoom the camera in, this is our east shore camera. emeryville, look at what we're talking about. the headlights coming toward us going away from the bay bridge. it illustrates water off the roadway. makes slippery off ramps. watch the transition and use the wipers. at the top the taillights going past the split and toward the bay bridge toll plaza. you are met with a backup. the metering lights are turned on. we see there is a very slow drive in the cash lanes, the fast track lanes are starting to move but i think these

conditions combined with the traffic which is seeing a burst now led to the fact they turned on the metering lights. that's unusual especially around the bay as we've seen this week. north 880, 980 a new crash, you approach 980, slippery conditions. watch that transition and there will be clearing one of the cars from the roadway. the wider look at the bay, a smoother drive. the blue there is puddling and ponding likely. the tri-valley area shows slowing, this is also the area that has school districts on vacation. back to you. >> thank you so much. now the follow-up investigators in san jose are looking at surveillance video hoping to find who shot and killed a father of a 6-month-old baby boy. the shooting happened yesterday morning on lanai avenue and denali way. the victim's uncle tells us that eric mendoza's wife found him dead in his car. she went out to look for him and

there he was. the neighborhood is known for gang activity. police don't think that he had gang ties. this is san jose's 11th homicide of the year. >> in sacramento, investigators are calling a string of fires suspicious. the latest was a large massive fire at a commercial building in downtown. we're told the building once housed theater equipment for the music circus. nobody heard investigators say this is one of four fires 18 span of six hours yesterday, all of which appeared to have started the back of buildings or in homes. >> it is 6:35 a deadly fire at an orphanage in india zwrxt we're following that as well. a boy darts out in front of a car but it's the driver who ends up getting beaten up by a mob. new details about this accident that sparked the attack.

>> new video this morning showing what's left behind after a deadly fire swept through an orphanage in india. two people died when flames broke out in new delhi about 150 people do live in that orphanage including some who are actually elderly or mentally challenged or severely ill. firefighters aren't sure what sparked that flame. >> a detroit man is in critical

condition after he hit a 10-year-old boy with his car and then was attacked by a mob. look at the surveillance video shows the moments before the man accidentally hit the 10-year-old who walked out into the street. you also can see men then running toward the scene. when the man gets out of his car to check on the boy the mob attacked him. police say the accident was not the driver's fault. so far no arrests. the boy is expected to recover. >> police in southern california on the hunt for a driver who hit and killed an 11-year-old girl during a chase. officers say he rammed a police car before hitting a minivan, killing a little girl, injuring her mother and another child. he managed to get away. the mother and child taken to the hospital in serious condition. >> coming up, we talk to the giants broadcaster live about today's big game, the giants versus the dodgers. >> and an office used by

mike, the giants offense came alive but now we need to carry this into dodger stadium. >> that's the goal. you start you don't even know what, and i think that's the problem about being in april. everybody is a threat and you don't know where your offense is coming from. you don't know how pitchers are going to do. i think the first four days in arizona was fantastic. the giants offense exploded. it really carried the pitching, three of the four starts weren't the greatest. they relied on offense. the guy in the middle was angel pagan. eight hits, knocked in six, scored three. you have your lead-off hitter like that you are going to do well. it was a significant series because now they come into los angeles with a head of steam. you cannot limp in here. >> a player, when you're coming off wins like that you think that is going to help them sail past the dodgers? will that help?

we're in a drought. so far totals pretty decent this morning up to a quarter inch in places like half moon bay. i'm going to show you future cast. we're not going to deal with shower activity all day long. i want to show you san jose. a break in the clouds, san francisco also looking good. mostly cloudy here. no fog impacting your drive yet. but that could become a factor. we'll keep tabs on that throughout the next couple hours as well. temperatures in the 50s, chilly out there, grab your coat. you'll probably have to use your windshield wipers for next hour even though the rain is subsiding with a lot of moisture on the highways. and you can see that being kicked up by the other commuters on the road. you'll notice that. as we head throughout the day, temperatures are going to be in the mid-60s, by tomorrow the upper 60s, then we trade the upper 60s in for the 80s by sunday up to mid-80s by monday. and then hey, this is san jose on tuesday. 88 degrees, 74 degrees on tuesday in san francisco, and that's what i'm talking about,

mike. what a beautiful temperature for a ball game after all at&t park is going to be jumping on tuesday for the home opener. we'll be there. >> we will. talking about the game and focused on that and i'm sitting there what a geek thinking man, it's going to be congested right in that area off 280 extension. we'll track it all. looking at northbound 101, we're seeing a burst of traffic. the roads damp but not wet. the rain and scattered showers throughout the morning look at the maps, not a major impact as far as the south bay but you have damp roads where it's green and slowing northbound 101 and 87 through downtown. we have that and with friday it's a lighter build and later build. over the mountains, tim told me you know it's a mess because of a couple of crashes on the shoulder. a little slow drive northbound. the southbound side you seem like you are doing okay. slippery roads, the rest of the bay looks pretty good. early commuters had problems on the peninsula with the rain, but

now it's damp road conditions. watch that into and out of san francisco. on the east bay we have the rain traveling through, that's why the blue is mostly on this side of the screen. we're looking at northbound 880 through oakland around 980 we lose a lane because a crash blocking your slow lane. this is a third for the area and i think you might have run out of tow trucks, now they got one and we see the slower drive. 580 after a report of a pole down it's out of the road, no problems at the interchange a. live look past the coliseum. wet road and potentially soupy conditions in patches for the oakland hills. the warriors and a's are both playing so a lot of post work traffic with two big events by the coliseum that will get crowded later on. the crowd since the metering lights were turned on. the lower visibility at times. overall it's friday a lighter volume of traffic most of the bay. the metering lights are on at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> thank you so much. an update to breaking news.

children's hospital oakland staff who work at an off-site complex are being moved after their building caught on fire. christie smith joining us there live. investigators saying this fire looks suspicious. >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly what they are saying. the arson investigator has left the scene but gathered all of the evidence she needs. i did hear from children's hospital oakland and they tell me they are going to be shuffling employees around today, they are waiting for word on this suspicious fire too but they are thankful to the oakland fire dhaept this building that caught fire overnight can be saved. this started before 3:00 this morning, someone phoned it in that smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the building. this is a converted home used by children's hospital oakland. the single alarm fire and firefighters tell us they knocked it down in about 10

minutes but ball it suspicious because it started outside overnight when no one was around. here is cynthia from children's hospital. >> it is education office, there are four employees so we'll be redeploying them in other areas so they can work. there's really minimal damage inside really, so it's just mostly on the back side and the roof. >> you know how long you'll be out of that building? >> probably three to four weeks. >> reporter: originally the oakland fire department said it was probably about $75,000 of damage to the building here but got a better look and now saying $150,000 damage. again, children's hospital saying they will be out for a couple of weeks. live in oakland, christie smith. >> we're learning new details about the soldier who killed three before committing suicide.

ivan lopez saw a psychiatrist last month and showed no sign of likely violence to himself or others. the post commander says there is strong possibility lopez got into a fight with at least one soldier before wednesday's shooting. lopez was an iraq war veteran. he never saw combat though. >> strong after shocks are rattling chile's northern coast this morning. today's strongest was 6.1. that struck the same area hit by tuesday's 8.2 quake which left six people dead. no new major damage, you can see what the previous quake did. also a heavy police presence is there keeping order. >> a developing story as the search for the missing malaysian airlines plane continues deep in the ocean. the underwater search is under way, crews hoping to detect pings from the two data recorders. the crews do not have time on their side. the recorders stop transmitting

after about 30 days after the crash, and that's a few days from now. the plane of course disappeared march 8, 239 people on board. weeks long hunt hasn't turned up a single piece of wreckage. >> happening now a 1-year-old girl seriously ill off the coast of mexico on a boat could soon be out of harm's way thanks to bay area crews. chase cain is live at moffett field with defails of this sea rescue. >> reporter: pretty incredible, peggy. the group that left from here yesterday, they had to fly out over the ocean in a helicopter, then parachute into the open ocean and then board this family sail boat tul try to help this 1-year-old girl who fell severely ill in the last couple days. the group that left, left yesterday afternoon. they are part of the 129th rescue ring, a division of the air national guard. and their mission was to get out and help this family because a couple days ago the sail boat

lost power and it has been unable to steer. part of the world we're talking about is off the coast of mexico about 900 nautical miles. the family has been on a 36-foot sail boat called the rebel heart as they are traveling the world, also blogging about their travels. the family on board has two parents, eric and charlotte. eric is a licensed captain. and they have two daughters, cora and lira. she is the girl who fell severely ill around the same time that this boat essentially became stranded in the water. that's why this crew from here at moffett field went out to try to help them. they got on board around 9:00, these para rescue men. the little girl is in stable condition but rather ill. she needs to get to a hospital quickly. that's what they are going to try to coordinate and with about the next hour or so another crew
